Dear Avila Supporters, What a year! As we reflect on all that was accomplished during the 2014-2015 year, we have so many reasons to celebrate – most importantly, YOU. Your support allowed Avila University to reach new heights, helping students uncover their full potential with one-on-one attention, high-quality academics, interdisciplinary classes and co-curricular activities. At a time when enrollment at other institutions is falling, the number of Avila undergraduate students continues to grow. They know the Avila difference.

Much of our focus has been on developing a strong strategic plan and campus master plan centered around student success. We implemented a new program, Inspired to Achieve, which will improve retention and graduation rates of all students, especially those who are low-income, first-generation or academically unprepared for college. In this way and many others, we continue to be guided by the values of our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Your support makes possible the scholarships, programs, technology, equipment and more that our students depend on to achieve their dream of a higher education.

In 2014-2015, your support helped raise a record $10 million, including more than $1 million at Steer Dinner for student scholarships. The impact of your investment can be seen and felt all over campus – in the classroom, on the field, and in the hearts and minds of the students we educate. Thank you.

In 2014-2015, we also began to prepare for the celebration of Avila’s 100th year.

Although much has changed over the last century, we remain committed to the mission that inspired the Sisters to establish Avila University – to serve the Dear Neighbor without distinction, to deliver excellence in teaching and learning, and respect the worth, dignity and potential of each human being. As you read this report, we hope you will recognize our accomplishments, and of course, that you will continue to be a part of our future.

Elise Pates is a junior music student concentrating in vocal performance with a minor in psychology. She is the vice president of the Mu Sigma Pi music club and core leader for the Music Ministry within Campus Ministry.

Elise Pates and the University Singers honored Avila supporter, Vita Goppert, at her funeral last year.

“Without the help of scholarships, I would not be able to attend Avila.

The scholarships helped bring the cost down and made it affordable for my family. To the donors who have helped me, THANK YOU.

We were honored to pay our respects for one donor, Vita Goppert. For every single performing arts student, Goppert Theatre is home. We have each grown tremendously on that stage. Without the generosity of Vita Goppert, we would not have this magical place.”

Sedrick Johnson is a senior kinesiology student and a member of the men’s basketball team. He is a recipient of the Bill Waris Memorial Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship was established in memory of longtime head men’s basketball coach, Bill Waris, by the Waris family and Tom McCullough.

“This scholarship is very important to me because I can complete my education while playing basketball. Avila inspires me because they teach the tools I need to pursue my dreams in life. The scholarships I have received have helped me towards my goal of getting my degree and I appreciate those who provide the funds for the scholarships.”

2014-2015 Accomplishments Educated and inspired more than 2,000 students Celebrated 416 graduates Experienced the largest full-time traditional undergraduate enrollment in our history Finalized a new core curriculum to further strengthen the Avila experience Awarded more than $12.8 million in scholarships and financial aid to deserving students Named as one of the Top 100 Most Affordable Small Colleges West of the Mississippi Dedicated the new Learning Commons, Marie Joan Harris, CSJ, Ph.D. Science & Health Complex, Martha Smith, CSJ Archives & Research Center and Glenna Wylie Hall Embarked on a new strategic and campus master planning process focused on student success Alumni and friends contributed a record $10 million, including more than $1 million for scholarships at the annual Steer Dinner Launched Avila’s inaugural men’s and women’s track and field team The softball team enjoyed the most successful season in history with 32 wins, a Heart of America Conference Tournament Championship and an appearance in the NAIA Softball World Series.
