My Fellow Alumni, Though February is the shortest month of the year, it is one of the most exciting and eventful times of the year. It is a time where we celebrate the distinguished achievements and unique history of African Americans and a time where we show appreciation for those we value–and who value us–with generosity and compassion.

That giving spirit was demonstrated at the 30th Annual Business Luncheon on February 28th, where Tougaloo honored committed partners who have given over $100,000 to the College with induction into the Society of Philanthropists. This year’s recipients were AT&T Mississippi, the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation, and Alumnus Judge Roosevelt Robinson (posthumously). Alumna Marion Tresvant, who has made a significant difference in the vitality and advancement of the College, received the Chairman’s Award. Other partners–specifically BankPlus, BancorpSouth, Kroger, along with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the Coca-Cola Foundation through a collaborative initiative—actualized their sup-

port in Tougaloo College by contributing $97, 500 in scholarships for deserving students. This is something w can be proud of.

The landmark study on the back cover, HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities—commissioned by UNCF’s Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute—found that Tougaloo’s annual impact is robust and far-reaching. Th study focused on three areas—total economic impact, employment, and lifetime earnings for graduates—that impact and contribute to the local and regional economies. Tougaloo has proven its capability to effect economic change in our society, and it has proven time and time again its legitimacy as an institution to invest in.

Because of professors like Drs. Ernst Borinksi Naomi Townsend, Ernestine Holloway, and many other who inspired us toward academic excellence and social responsibility, we have become distinguished scholars an groundbreaking leaders in our respective career fields. This premier event has afforded us the opportunity to honor visionary, progressive and courageous individuals, who through their life’s work, have made significant, even extraordinary, contributions to society.

Trey Baker

City Manager, Grenada, MS Trey Baker ’06 is City Manager in his hometown of Grenada, Mississippi.

Grenada is one of six municipalities in Mississippi with a Council/Manager form of government, making Trey the functional head of government for the City.

Prior to going back to Grenada, Trey worked as Counsel for Tougaloo alum, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, in the Washington, D.C. office.

Previously, Trey was a Career Consultant in the Office of Career Development and Opportunities at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law, where he also graduated. He was a member of the Public Sector team specializing in career opportunities in federal and state government agencies, public interest organizations, and non-profit organizations. While at Tougaloo, Trey was elected Mr. Tougaloo College and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He was a part of the 2016 inaugural class of the Tougaloo Forty Under Forty and continues to inspire the next generation of eagles as a recent speaker for the SGA’s Black History Convocation on February 14.

Tray Hairston Partner at Butler Snow

A 2002 graduate of Tougaloo, Tray Hairston is now a partner of Butler Snow, a law firm recognized in the top 250 by the National Law Journal.

Hairston focuses his practice on public finance, economic development, and government relations. Before joining the firm, he served as counsel and economic development advisor to Gov. Phil Bryant. He has served as bond counsel for various cities and counties throughout Mississippi, and is also an adjunct law professor at Mississippi College School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor. He is a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers and Mississippi Bar Association.

Hairston has been named to the Young Lawyer of the Year

by Mississippi College School of Law, Top 40 Under 40 by the Mississippi Business Journal, and Top 100 Black Lawyers

by The National Black Lawyers. He was honored in the 2016 inaugural class of the Tougaloo Forty Under Forty and is an engaged alumnus of the College. He was the Co-Chair of the Tougaloo College 1869 Annual Fund for the 2015-2016 Campaign, and he is a member of the Board of Directors for Mississippi Main Street Association and Mississippi Today.

State President of AARP MS

Gwendolyn Spencer Prater, Ph.D, has been appointed as the new State President of AARP Mississippi, the state’s highest volunteer position in Mississippi, representing 285,000 AARP members in the state. In partnership with the State Director, volunteers and staff, the State President helps the organization achieve its vision, mission and strategic priorities.

Prater previously served as a member of the AARP Mississippi Executive Council where she helped shape AARP’s strategic direction in the state.

Prater is Dean Emerita of the School of Social Work and College of Public Service at Jackson State University. Prater earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Tougaloo College, Master of Social Work from The Ohio State University, and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California.

Prater is a native of Vicksburg. She is married to Tougaloo alum and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Wesley Prater.

Dr. LaFarra Young, MD is a 2000 graduate of Tougaloo. She is a board-certified pathologist, a physician who works in the laboratory to test and analyze tissues removed during surgery and other biological samples to assist other physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Dr. Young now has plans to expand her medical practice to include preventive health care that promotes nutrition and exercise.

Dr. Young grew up in rural Crystal Springs, Mississippi. Drawn to science and math, she knew in elementary school that she wanted to be a doctor.

After medical school at Boston University, she did her residency training at University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she also worked as an assistant professor before completing her fellowship in Tennessee.

She was recently inducted into Tougaloo’s 2017 40 Under 40 and is the busy mother of twin boys.

Greetings from the Division of Humanities at Historic Tougaloo College! It is my distinct pleasure to greet you as Academic Dean, on behalf of our outstanding major students within the Humanities and our outstanding Humanities Faculty. Our outstanding faculty members-many among them award-winning scholars, performers, composers, actors, writers, visual artists, educators, mass media experts-take exceptional pride in guiding our students in their journey of discovery, assisting them as they hone their research skills, aesthetic values and social sensibilities that equip them to thrive with intelligence and integrity, individually and as communities in an increasingly interconnected global community.

Major disciplines within the Division awarding the Bachelor of Arts are English; Visual Arts; Music; Mass Communication, Liberal Studies/Religion and Philosophy. Many students within the Division seek to combine content areas with study in education and become Pre K through 12th grade highly qualified instructors. This is accomplished through pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in Music Education; Art Education; and English Education. The Division also offers areas of study in World Languages and Culture; Creative Writing/Drama/Theater.

Disciplines and areas of study play a fundamental role in carrying out the college’s mission of a student-centered, research-focused, and service-oriented Liberal Arts institution. Students within the Division of Humanities believe that they have the duty to make a difference in society. Our graduates consistently thrive in graduate and professional schools nationally and internationally achieving Ph. D.’s; DMA’s; JD’s; MD’s, MFA’s, garnering successful careers as cooperate businessmen; performers; politicians; literary scholars and professors; national media correspondents; doctors; lawyers; actors; directors; play writes; and educators on all levels. Whether in the studio or in the classroom, our students relish the many opportunities and challenges – many cross-departmental and cross-divisional – that are provided to them.

It is our desire to continue this outstanding legacy of academic success through the establishment of partnerships, working with colleagues, friends and alumni to promote sustainability and growth in the Humanities. Tougaloo takes part in telling the story of HBCUs ABOVE: A panel discussion was held after the screening. Panelists included MPB Executive Director, Ronnie Agnew; Director of We Are Rising, Stanley Nelson; President of Jackson State University, Dr. William Bynum, Jr.; President Hogan; and President of Mississippi Valley State University, Dr. Jerryl Briggs, Sr. (Photo: MPB) MPB held a screening of filmmakers Stanley Nelson and Marco Williams’ new documentary, Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities, on January 25th at the Mississippi e-Center at JSU. Co-hosted by Tougaloo College and Jackson State University, the screening was attended by students, administrators, faculty and staff from each of the state’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The film, which is the first documentary on HBCUs, chronicles the emergence of black colleges and universities from pre-slavery up to the 21st century as many of these institutions begin to celebrate 150 years of academic excellence for African-Americans.

The film derives its name from a famous quote by Richard Robert Wright, one of the most influential educators of early black learning institutions who opened the first black school in Georgia in 1876. While a student in Atlanta, he was asked, by a visiting group of missionaries, “What should we tell people about your schooling?” His legendary response was, “Tell them we are rising.”

And rise they did. Through the ideologies of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois to the agents of change during the Civil Rights Movement to trailblazers and visionaries of every field in the nation and world, HBCUs lifted the status and perception of African Americans towards new heights of self-actualization, self-confidence, influence and impact.

In the closing remarks of the program, President Hogan supported the sentiment that HBCUs are more relevant than ever before. “In this 21st century, HBCUs are necessary. We still continue to educate with a purpose and a plan, not only to ensure that every person who desires an education has an opportunity for that, but to also be able to contribute meaningfully to society and to themselves in ways that advance their families and their communities.”

Representing Tougaloo at the film screening was Alumna Khirsten L. Echols, who received a Bachelor’s in English degree from Tougaloo College in 2012.

Reflecting on the impact Tougaloo had on her life, she states, “Tougaloo completely changed my life.

I was a first-generation college student from Memphis, TN. When I came to Tougaloo, I got a complete awareness of higher education, but also of my culture and myself in a way that I didn’t so many years prior.”

Echols was accepted to other schools, such as Emory University and Davidson College, but it was the opportunity to receive a full scholarship that prompted her to embark on an educational journey at Tougaloo. “I took a chance and it was the best decision I made,” states Echols.

She adds, “During my time at Tougaloo, I got so many opportunities. I was able to travel abroad to South America, Africa and Europe.

I was able to participate in research programs and I was afforded a quality education in the English department that prepared me for graduate studies. I am now working on my Ph.D. in English at the University of Louisville and I’m writing my dissertation on Tougaloo. So I think that I am coming full circle into what it meant to have a Tougaloo education, and I am undoubtedly certain that I wouldn’t be where I am today if it hadn’t been for Tougaloo.”

Tougaloo College Advances to the National championship for the 29th Annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge

After participating in a National Qualifying Tournament, Tougaloo College will compete against fellow Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) at the 29th annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National Championship Tournament. Teams from 48 HBCUs will go head-to-head in the National Championship of America’s premier academic quiz for top HBCU students on the American Honda Motor Co., Inc. campus in Torrance, California.

Tougaloo College has the opportunity to win the top prize – a $75,000 institutional grant from Honda.

Ollie-Hayes, a Senior majoring in Biology from Tchula, MS; Simeon A. Williams, a Senior majoring in Psychology from Memphis, TN; Latrice M. Johnson, a Sophomore majoring in English & Pre-law from Oklahoma City, OK; and Ade S. Hallman, a Junior majoring in History from Chicago, IL. Dr. Margaret Anderson, who has served as Coach/Advisor of the Tougaloo Academic Team for four years, will coach the team.

Congratulations to our students and alumni who attended the 2018 UNCF National Alumni Council/National Pre-Alumni Council Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia on February 9-11, 2018, who earned honors, awards, and leadership positions. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have been selected to attend the UNCF Conference this year. As a first year student, I am delighted that I had the privilege of networking, meeting new people and developing professionally as an individual,” says Vanetta Brownlow in the Class of 2021.

The National Pre-Alumni Council (NPAC) was founded in 1958 by Dr. Walter Washington, an alumnus of Tougaloo College, who felt that it was imperative for students to understand and learn early their responsibilities as alumni of historically black colleges and universities. The NPAC provides leadership for PAC students who are elected to serve on the NPAC Board and encourages student participation in alumni activities prior to and after graduation.

The Pre-Alumni Council (PAC) exist to stimulate the interest and participation of students enrolled at UNCF-member institutions to preserve and create further loyalty and fellowship between the colleges and universities, their faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Department of Energy creates STEM Scholars

The Department of Energy (DOE) in an effort to build research capacity at HBCUs, entered a cooperative agreement with Tougaloo College and will award 20 Minority Education and Community Development Scholarships during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Students who receive this scholarship will be known as The Department of Energy STEM Scholars. In addition to that distinction, they will also be afforded opportunities to: • Apply for a renewable award

1869 Annual Fund “Connecting alumni to students like never before.”

Each year, our alumni make the connection—the link between their own success and their Tougaloo experience—to support the 1869 Annual Fund to help ensure that current and future students have the same meaningful opportunities that prepared them to enhance and change the world.

Gifts to the 1869 Annual Fund have an immediate and meaningful impact on every aspect of the College. Whether the preference is to contribute to a specific academic program, a co-curricular or extracurricular activity, or a valuable service provided by the College such as Career Services, these gifts—no matter the size—make a real impact.

The alumni fundraising goal this year is $1.2 million and we want to increase our alumni level of participation. You are well on the way. To date, alumni have raised $675,712, 56% of the goal, and we have 462 alumni donors who have provided support for scholarships, academic programs and other initiatives. THE POSITIVE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF

TOUGALOO COLLEGE Tougaloo College is a valuable economic engine in its community, generating substantial economic returns year after year. The benefits flow to Tougaloo College’s graduates, of course, who’ll enter the workforce with sharper skills and vastly enhanced earning prospects. But, as a landmark study commissioned by UNCF—HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities—makes clear, the benefits also flow to the local and regional economies that are connected to Tougaloo College.

The presence of an HBCU means a boost to economic activity, on and off—and even well beyond—campus. Stronger growth. Stronger communities. More jobs. And a more talented workforce.

$398 Million Lifetime Earnings

$42 Million Economic Impact

The study’s key findings (based on 2014 data) make a persuasive case:

Total Economic Impact: $42 Million Tougaloo College generates $42 million in total economic impact for its local and regional economies. This estimate includes direct spending by Tougaloo College on faculty, employees, academic programs and operations—and by students attending the institution, as well as the follow-on effects of that spending.

Every dollar spent by Tougaloo College and its students produces positive economic benefits, generating $1.41 in initial and subsequent spending for its local and regional economies. Communities and regions hoping to foster a more robust and diversified economic climate find HBCU-connected spending a critical component of that effort.

Total Employment Impact: 552 Jobs Tougaloo College generates 552 jobs for its local and regional economies. Of this total, 316 are on-campus jobs, and 236 are off-campus jobs.

For each job created on campus, another 0.7 public- or private-sector job is created off campus because of Tougaloo College-related spending.

Looked at in a different way: Each $1 million initially spent by Tougaloo College and its students creates 19 jobs.

Total Lifetime Earnings for Graduates: $398 Million Tougaloo College plays a major role in the economic success of its graduates by enhancing their education, training and leadership skills. A college degree opens the door to economic prosperity through greater employment and earnings potential. In fact, the 158 Tougaloo College graduates in 2014 can expect total earnings of $398 million over their lifetimes—that’s 75 percent more than they could expect to earn without their college credentials.

Or viewed on an individual basis, a Tougaloo College graduate working full time throughout his or her working life can expect to earn $1.1 million in additional income due to a college credential.i i

This estimate reflects incremental earnings averaged across degree and certificate programs.
