In this edition, we celebrate community anniversaries, share decadent recipes for entertaining, profile a budding (and youthful) entrepreneur, and offer our top tips for weekends away, interior styling, home cleaning, and much more.

We hope you will join us, through the pages of Together, as we bring you more of the unique stories from across the nation that we are inspired by and privileged to capture.

5 TOGETHER, AGAIN

Welcome to our second edition of Together magazine where we celebrate the stories from across our growing neighbourhoods. Creating thriving, connected communities is at the heart of everything we do. ‘We bring people together’ isn’t simply a tagline, it is how the AVID Property Group team approach each aspect of community building. Together is an avenue for us to share real resident stories, practical tips, and inspiration that will guide you long after you first cross paths with us, and even move into your AVID address. For our team, Togetherness is about placemaking. We know putting a genuine focus on placemaking when developing communities produces value, connection, and beauty to the lives of our residents.

Our aim is to create communities where residents truly belong from the very first interaction, long before the moment they turn the key. Since our last edition, we have welcomed hundreds of new families across our 38 communities, and we excitedly welcome each new one as much as the very first resident all those years ago. In the coming year, we expect to see many more families making the leap towards their first home, beginning new builds, moving interstate, and making their completed house, a home. Beyond this, our team is working hard to provide more housing opportunities to more Australians, and we are very much looking forward to announcing more on this in our next edition. A SENSE OF BELONGING Community is defined by so much more than where our home is located – it’s the common interests we share and the social connections we form. Community helps shape our identity and impacts our experience of the world. In the following pages we speak to people from AVID communities across the country. Residents and staff who form the fabric of our neighbourhoods through their entrepreneurial aspirations, their neighbourly actions, and their guiding wisdom.

Fifteen-year-old Ollie’s passion for animals has led to a successful business venture, making him one of the Sunshine Coast’s youngest entrepreneurs.

“The community has been a great support network, especially Harmony’s Business Hub – an initiative within the community launched to connect local business owners and the local community with our products and services.”

“My family first moved into Harmony in 2019, but it wasn’t until 2021 when I started selling dog cookies every Saturday at Harmony’s Grand Linear Park,” Ollie said. “Throughout the years, I have perfected my baking skills and now only make the biscuits and treats which I know are a popular go-to for the locals and their four-legged friends,” he said. Ollie’s Dog Treats offers chicken jerky, peanut butter cookies, blueberry cookies and other pooch-friendly goodies that his furry neighbours have grown to love. Ollie said the neighbourly support he’s received from the Harmony community has helped grow his business and streamline operations. “The community has been a great support network, especially Harmony’s Business Hub – an initiative within the community launched to connect local business owners and the local community with our products and services.

Harmony resident Ollie Akester is making waves in his local community with handmade dog treats and service with a smile – a passion earning him the top shelf at surrounding IGA Supermarkets. Initially starting as a hobby, Ollie’s Dog Treats has transformed into a legitimate business venture with monthly stalls in his community at Harmony, Caloundra Street Fair and the Mooloolaba Sunset Markets in addition to being stocked at local cafés and retailing in IGA.

“I was gifted a Square Reader – for cashless payments for my market stall – by one of the Business Hub members and another member even offered to help me set up my website,” Ollie said. Recently Ollie participated in A Dog’s Life Pet Expo in Noosa and the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge’s Dog’s Day Out, which is a special event aimed at raising funds for the refuge. SEA CHANGE

d o o g s a s i e g Chan as a holiday

Together

They say change is as good as a holiday, and some people have made this dream a reality, by moving interstate to make popular Queensland holiday destinations their permanent home. Meet two families who have decided to trade the hustle and bustle of city life in Sydney and Melbourne, for a more laid-back Queensland lifestyle on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

AMARA

11 In May of 2023, semi-retired couple Jim and Cathy Coutlis packed up their life in Sydney and moved almost a thousand kilometres north to join AVID’s Amara community in Ormeau. The Coutlis’ said the big move was inspired by a desire to be closer to family and the Queensland way of life was a bonus. “We fell in love with the location of Ormeau, it is so quiet compared to most neighbouring towns, yet close enough to all the amenities we need and also to our family who live on the Gold Coast,” Jim said. “It took us a long eight months to sell our home in Sydney but AVID were helpful in holding onto our dream home with only a $5,000 deposit until it sold – that took away a lot of stress for us. “The fact that we were able to purchase a ready to move in home from Villaworld Homes by AVID simplified the process. We didn’t have to worry about choosing colours, tiles, bricks, cabinetry etcetera because all those decisions were made already! That suited us to a tee. “The community is beautifully landscaped with lots of green space – it’s the perfect address to connect with nature – and we are so impressed with the design and quality finishes of our home so this made our decision to move to Amara easy. “When we tell shopkeepers we’ve moved up from Sydney they often ask us what we think of Amara. Naturally we give it a big wrap because we love it here.” Jim and Cathy said they have easily settled into their new life at Amara and have found the neighbourhood welcoming. “Settling in has been very easy because all our neighbours are like us and are moving into a new home. In that sense, we all have a commonality so it’s easy to strike up a conversation. When I am out walking our dog, everyone knows her name and will stop for a pat.” The Coutlis’ recommend anyone looking to purchase interstate strongly consider a house and land package as it streamlines the buying process. HARMONY When the Wilson family visited the Sunshine Coast they instantly fell in love. Soon after they decided to take a leap and leave Melbourne behind for a sea change at AVID’s Palmview community Harmony. The move has provided parents Belinda and Ben with a better work life balance, trading hours spent in heavy traffic with family ‘chill time’. “The time we spend together as a family is quality time, we are always sitting outside at the end of the day, taking in the serenity and being present,” said Belinda. “There is so much to do on the Sunshine Coast, but some of our favourite weekends are spent chilling in Harmony – at home or enjoying the outdoor spaces. “We love the community. Harmony is a really safe, family-oriented place perfect for the kids. They are always playing with friends, riding their bikes or hanging out at the parks.” Belinda said although it is hard moving interstate and leaving behind friends and family, the Wilson’s found settling into the Harmony community a breeze. “The Harmony long table dinner was a great opportunity to meet people and through that we have made some great friends. “The community here is so strong. Free boot camp sessions and the weekend parkrun are other great ways we found to meet people and keep active – we feel very lucky that AVID have put these on for the community.” The Wilson’s found the process of buying interstate easy, with support from the Harmony team both before, during and after the purchase. “We felt AVID really cared about helping us to achieve our goal of moving to the Sunshine Coast and purchasing within Harmony. We have also been lucky enough to build our family home – which is a dream come true – and have met some incredible people in our neighbourhood,” said Belinda. Belinda and Ben have advice for anyone considering a move interstate; research and visit your desired location to get a feel for if it is the right fit for you. CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS OF FUN Community spirit is what makes a neighbourhood feel like home — and the welcoming atmosphere of the Waterford community is at the heart of its success.

Over the past five years, Waterford has established an annual calendar of events which are popular among residents and the wider Chisholm community. Hundreds of people flock to attend Sunday Music Sessions, Easter, Halloween and Christmas celebrations – just to name a few.

Nestled into the Hunter Valley’s Chisholm community, Waterford is home to more than 1,000 families and celebrates its fifth birthday this year.

Deb Silvestri, Waterford’s long-serving Sales Manager has watched the community blossom over the years and believes the events are so successful because they provide the opportunity for people to make new connections and have some fun together.

The Whiley family were among Waterford’s very first residents – they have seen the community grow and watched the neighbourhood spirit thrive. After moving into their home in Waterford, Marty and Jodie welcomed a daughter, who is now often found running around their backyard or playing in her cubby house. The family enjoy visiting Waterford’s parks and attending the community’s much-loved events, taking the opportunity to get to know more of their neighbours. “Whenever there’s a Waterford event like Christmas Carols or Sunday Music Sessions we always get involved, everyone really embraces those activities,” Marty said. “Everyone at Waterford really enjoys coming together – we all take pride in our community and the inclusive culture that’s been created here.”

“We are so lucky to have such a caring, thoughtful group of people who call Waterford home. These events have always been a way for us to open our neighbourhood to the wider community and celebrate that inclusive spirit,” Deb said. While the string of events have kept things fun over the past five years, Waterford is really just beginning. New residents and new land releases, a future town centre and community centre, as well as vibrant parks and greenspaces are among the exciting chapters that await Waterford and its residents. CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS OF FUN

ALL STREAMS LEAD TO FAMILY The tight-knit community of Waterford is home to an abundance of beautiful natural enclaves and water channels that provide habitats to the region’s native wildlife. The serenity has all the O’Connor’s signing up for life at Waterford.

Jack O’Connor was no stranger to the Hunter Valley community when he purchased his block on Billabong Parade earlier this year. This is Jack’s third purchase in the community, following the lead of his parents who built their first Waterford home six years ago, and his sister who is also currently living on Billabong Parade.

The physical and mental health benefits of living close to greenspaces and waterways have long been the topic of research papers and studies with stress relief, improved cognitive function, and increased exercise among the most common benefits.

“We’ve grown up in the area, so I think as a family we wanted to stay close to everything we know and love. Waterford was a natural choice for all of us, there are so many amenities in the area and it’s still near Newcastle, so I’m connected with my friends living there,” Jack said. Many of Waterford’s streets face parks, waterways, or creeks creating a natural setting for residents to unwind. “The homes that my family and I have lived in over the years have all been either close to, or facing, these natural enclaves. Having those relaxing landscapes surrounding you is wonderful.” The physical and mental health benefits of living close to greenspaces and waterways have long been the topic of research papers and studies with stress relief, improved cognitive function, and increased exercise among the most common benefits. “I work in an industrial environment at a nearby power station so having that natural escape to come home to, stroll through, and to relax in on the weekends is really beneficial,” Jack said. Earlier this year, the AVID community launched additional larger lots in Waterford all fronting natural enclaves as part of their ‘Territoria Place’ release. The blocks, which range from 796sqm to 875sqm, were specifically designed to provide buyers with a home that exudes peacefulness and seclusion but still provides the social benefits of a residential neighbourhood. A VERY SCHOLARLY NEIGHBOURHOOD

A lifestyle magazine

The community surrounding AVID’s Hillstowe address is not simply one of natural beauty and country charm, it’s also home to highly sought-after schools, giving Hillstowe’s youngest residents a bright start.

Shannon and Corey Feenstra made the move to Hillstowe in outer east Melbourne to be close to family and have since fallen in love with the region — including the vast number of education options on offer for their growing family of three. “As we have just started our family, having a local school with a great reputation was a huge bonus. There’s so much variety here, we have three schools within a minute walking distance of home,” Shannon said. Among the high calibre schools on Hillstowe’s doorstep is Officer Primary School, a smaller country-style campus with intimate class sizes. AVID regularly collaborates with the catchment school, including sponsoring a Take 3 for the Sea educational event with the students earlier this year.

Together

Many locals choose St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar, a leading, independent private school in the area, as it supports students from early learning, right through to year 12. Stretched across two campuses in Officer and the neighbouring suburb of Berwick, the school is open to both boys and girls. Another popular choice for Hillstowe residents is Minaret College, Victoria’s largest independent Islamic school. Their values and curriculum align strongly with the principles of Islamic education making it a great option for the diverse residents that call the region home.

While the Feenstra’s are yet to decide on the right primary or secondary school for their six-month-old daughter, they aren’t concerned about finding the perfect fit. “There are plenty of schooling options in Officer both primary and secondary; we’ve heard great things about the new Orchard Park Primary School. “We are still tossing up between the local Catholic or public school, we’re happy we still have a few years to decide.” Shannon said. For now, the young family is focusing on early learning centres, as their daughter is set to start her educational journey this year. “It was important to us to be close to a reputable childcare centre, we are lucky enough to be just a five-minute walk from the one we have chosen,” Shannon said. As the Feenstra’s approach their two-year anniversary living in Hillstowe they said the one-hectare Hillstowe Central Park was another major draw card. “We’ll often enjoy lunch in the park as a family or stroll through the lovely tree-lined pathways. The local area more broadly has a lot of character and having the backdrop of the Yarra Ranges behind makes it really easy to call this neighbourhood home.” To find out more about Hillstowe, please visit www.hillstowe.avid.com.au

BUILDING THEIR HAPPY PLACE For Carolina residents Mousufa and Chaugule Waheeb, building a house with room for extended family visits and work-from-home arrangements was a must.

AVID Property Group A lifestyle magazine

BUILDING THEIR HAPPY PLACE

The young couple — who married in 2019 after meeting overseas — moved into the growing Deanside community of Carolina, situated in west Melbourne, in May of last year, and welcomed their daughter a few months later. “There is a really strong sense of community here; I see kids in the neighbourhood playing together and I am really reassured knowing that when my baby is a little bit older, she will be able to play with them too,” Mousufa said.

Together

While the Waheeb’s are a smaller family, they built a four-bedroom home to ensure they had the extra space necessary to cater to their extended family and hybrid work arrangements.

“There is a really strong sense of community here; I see kids in the neighbourhood playing together and I am really reassured knowing that when my baby is a little bit older, she will be able to play with them too.” – Mousufa Waheeb, Carolina resident

“Having two extra bedrooms is very important to us; we use one of the rooms as a home office and the other as a guest room. “We have my husband’s parents visiting at the moment and my parents visiting next year from overseas, so it is super important we have this extra room. “It means a lot to us to be able to provide our extended family with a space in our home where they can relax and have some privacy,” Ms Waheeb said. The Waheeb’s are part of a growing trend. According to recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than three quarters (77 per cent) of Aussie households have at least one spare bedroom1 as more people look for larger homes catering to family visits and work commitments. While bedrooms were integral parts of the Waheeb’s home layout, the living area is their favourite place to spend time together and connect, not just as a family, but also with their new neighbours. “Since we moved to Carolina, we have loved hosting parties and welcoming neighbours and friends into our home. There are a lot of young parents like us so that’s good because everyone is going through the same experiences,” Mousufa said. With 211 established homes and counting, Carolina welcomes new residents to the community each month, bringing more friendly faces to this special neighbourhood. Meet Sarah Palme

An AVID Customer Ambassador who is passionate about her role supporting people through their buying, building, and moving journey.

“It’s wonderful to meet so many people and help them through one of the largest and most emotional decisions of their life,” she said. “A recent customer stands out for me – a lovely couple who hadn’t bought a home in about 35 years, they were understandably nervous as the market had changed a lot during this time. “It was a real joy to help them through the buying journey and introduce them to their new community. When they contacted me well after they’d moved in to ask for tips on how to get to the Brisbane Exhibition, I was only too happy to help.” Sarah said two-way conversation, transparency, and integrity was at the core of AVID’s business, and the role of customer ambassadors was something AVID pioneered in the property sector. “There are many developers offering this service now, however to my knowledge none offer the full end-to-end service that AVID does and that makes me really proud to work for this company,” she said. “People really appreciate how much AVID focuses on putting customers first. A customer who bought his first home with us, contacted me eight years later for assistance buying his first, second, and third investment properties, because our customer ambassador program makes the buying process so smooth. “AVIDConnect really elevates our level of customer service. We put ourselves in our customer’s shoes and think about what we’d like to know if the roles were reversed. It’s standard that many documents aren’t disclosed before settlement, but we do not work like that. Full transparency is important to our customers, just as much as it is to us. “Years ago, I even suggested my brother buy an AVID property, it makes me so proud to see his family grow and become a part of a vibrant AVID community.”

HOW TO BUY LAND

Together

As AVID’s National Sales Manager, Holly Brennan is no stranger to the land buying process. Holly has guided hundreds of customers through the journey and has also embarked on the process herself with her own family. Her experience on both sides of the journey has given Holly a deep understanding of how exciting, albeit daunting, this new chapter can be. We sat down with Holly, who shares her wisdom and breaks down each step of the land buying process.

“It’s important to keep in mind that rules around land contracts can vary between states which is why it’s so important to have your trusted sales team and your solicitor or conveyancer guide you through the process.”

BUYER TIPS WITH PROPERTY SALES EXPERT HOLLY BRENNAN

1 4

Speak to a Sales Consultant If this is your first time buying land, it’s really important to chat through the process with someone you can trust. An experienced house and land sales representative is a great place to start. They are trained advisors who can provide hands on support and advice, they will help you manage these first steps with care.

What do you want from your home? Next up, it’s time to work out what your dream home looks like. Even though you might not be ready to choose a design, it’s still important to sit down and work out what your needs are for your future abode as this will influence the piece of land you purchase too. If you’re looking for a long, single storey home with a large backyard you’ll need a generous block. If you want to prioritise privacy in your home design, perhaps a cul-de-sac block is the right choice. All of your home design decisions will directly influence the piece of land that will work best for you, so it’s important to get thinking early. Many of our AVID communities, for example, have display villages on-site with the country’s best builders on-hand to help you with assessing your needs, planning, and looking at costings. Chat to your sales consultant on which builder might be the best fit for your specific needs.

7

2

Talking through your finances with a broker Making sure you’re financially ready to take the leap towards buying land is crucial. Start by chatting with family and friends, as they might have had a good experience with a local broker or financial institution that they would recommend. Your nearest and dearest want what’s best for you and just like giving you a recommendation to their favourite coffee spot, getting their advice on a broker is no different.

3

Choosing a solicitor or conveyancer Just like finding the right broker, choosing a solicitor or conveyancer to help you through the legalities of buying land is another important part of the process. Again, look to your closest friends and family for their unbiased advice and, as always, the sales team is on hand to provide a list of local solicitors or conveyancers to help narrow down the search.

If you still aren’t sure where to go, your trusted sales representative will be able to provide a list of brokers you may want to investigate and enquire with.

5

It’s time to put down your deposit and make the exchange This is a very exciting step, as you’re about to guarantee a place in your future neighbourhood. While the deposit and exchange process varies from developer to developer, our AVID communities typically handle the process in three steps. The first step is providing your $1,000 holding deposit to secure the land. After that, your solicitor or conveyancer will work with you to review the contract before signing and exchanging paperwork with AVID. Once this process is complete, the balance of the deposit is due. It’s important to keep in mind that rules around land contracts can vary between states which is why it’s so important to have your trusted sales team and your solicitor or conveyancer guide you through this big step.

Congratulations are in order! Once your land is registered it’s time to settle and begin your home building journey. My colleagues at AVID have plenty of tips up their sleeve when it comes to building so stay tuned in our next edition for all the details on how to build.

6

Preparing for registration and settlement You’re almost there, the development team are now working closely with the local government to get your land registered. At AVID, during this pre-settlement period, our customer care team will provide monthly development updates on the construction of your land through email newsletters and phone call check-ins. Our digital AVIDConnect program is also available, providing helpful tips and a self-serve experience that guides you through the next steps and provides resources and advice from our experts. You’ll also have a designated customer care team member who is at the ready to help with all your questions. As you near the anticipated registration date, you will need to work with your broker and solicitor or conveyancer to prepare for settlement day. No matter who you’re purchasing from, it is important to have regular check-ins so you understand how your land is progressing.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION IS EVERYTHING Our hobbies and connections are integral to what it means to be human, and often they are building blocks of meaningful relationships. This is why the AVIDEngage initiative has been designed, to create opportunities for people to come together. Our ever-changing social environment calls for a unique approach in bringing people together, in a world where the need for social interaction has never been so important. It’s the impacts of foundational community connection that motivates AVID’s Linda Walsh and Melissa Kerr to spark social change within Aussie communities. “There is so much research that supports how connections through relationships, places, social activities, family, friends or co-workers lead to healthier mindsets and greater life enjoyment. Our commitment to community engagement is something we take very seriously. It’s important everyone has the chance to engage in their community and have meaningful connection with those living around them,” said AVID’s General Manager of Marketing and Customer, Linda Walsh.

Together

AVID delivers a range of digital and in person experiences under its AVIDEngage program, with the aim of helping people feel connected. “Dedicated Community Engagement Officers create unique experiences for residents and staff, designed to foster community spirit and celebrate the rich diversity of their neighbourhoods.

We also produce an online video series where residents can learn, share, or connect with their neighbours and other AVID communities across Australia. This might include kids craft activities, interior design tips, or cooking demonstrations involving our residents or local heroes such as professional sportspeople. “Sponsoring or offering grants to sporting teams, schools, and charities are other ways in which we engage with the community – as these bodies are so important for the social fabric of a community.” National Marketing Manager Melissa Kerr agrees, stating AVID is passionate about setting benchmarks that deliver better social, environmental, design, and commercial outcomes for people. “The essence of our brand is to create a better life for people, and so much of this is about offering a variety of opportunities where children and adults can get involved in their community. We know that a person’s environment is a direct contributor to their wellbeing and sense of belonging which is why we foster ongoing engagement opportunities,” said Melissa.

27

“We pride ourselves on considering the finer details. Our sales centres are information centres too, and are co-located with cafés that quickly become a key meeting place in the neighbourhood. People may be new to Australia, or first-time parents, so our Community Engagement Officers will actively seek ways to make these individuals feel welcome. That might include starting a mums and bubs group at the café or hosting a welcome event for new residents. “The key is to consistently deliver engagement opportunities, which sees community spirit build over time and friendships being established, as more people move in. An event, such as our annual Diggers Rest community Christmas Carols for example, started in 2017 with 500 people attending. Fast-forward five years and there are well over 2,500 people showing up and eager to be a part of the festivities.

“Our commitment to community engagement is something we take very seriously. It’s important everyone has the chance to engage in their community and have meaningful connection with those living around them.” – Linda Walsh

“We’re not just building homes, streets, or parks – we are creating neighbourhoods and tight-knit communities. It is what we all want as humans – to live in a thriving, connected community where we can be our best selves.” You can read about AVIDEngage in action through our articles about the Harmony Business Hub on pages 36 and 37 and Sponsorship and Grants Program on pages 30 and 31. A PARTNERSHIP IN FULL BLOOM Bloomdale by AVID Property Group and Diggers Rest Football and Netball Club have been kicking goals together in Victoria for almost a decade. Diggers Rest Football and Netball Club (DRFNC) President Ben Morse has long believed in the need for developers to truly invest and connect with the community they are joining.

Together

“If you’re building homes in the area and bringing more people to the region, it’s important that you support the local groups servicing the community,” Mr Morse said. When AVID Property Group first entered the quiet, historic Diggers Rest community in the early 2010s, the team recognised the acute need to do just that. Bloomdale was conceived not as a separate, isolated community, but an integrated part of the wider Diggers Rest area.

Beyond the introduction of five community parks, new road infrastructure, increased amenities, and a proposed future town centre, another major part of this integration was the launch of Bloomdale’s Sponsorship and Grants program. Since launching, the program has provided more than $200,000 in funding for local events, groups, and sporting clubs, including the DRFNC. Mr Morse said consistent and loyal sponsors are incredibly important to the club’s success and longevity, allowing them to expand their offering to encourage more women and children to play grassroots sport. “Bloomdale is one of our longest serving sponsors, we’ve developed a fabulous working relationship with the AVID team over the years – they are always eager to help us maintain the club and bring our projects to life,” he said.

31 “The appetite for community sport is there and the support we get from businesses like AVID Property Group puts us in the position where we can add more teams and continue to foster these teams within Diggers Rest.” The latest project for the DRFNC — which has 800 members in total — is the redevelopment of Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve facilities, including a new pavilion, changing rooms, and social rooms. While the revamped amenity is an exciting new chapter, it has increased the need for sponsorships. “The most recent round of AVID funding will go towards club equipment, uniforms, and the costs associated with temporary facilities. This allows us to keep our membership fees at the same affordable price and takes pressure off our community volunteers,” Mr Morse said. Throughout their nine-year sponsorship, the Bloomdale grant has funded equipment, player uniforms, club amenities, and in 2019 the sponsorship enabled DRFNC to get their first senior women’s football team up and running. “The demand was already there and the ongoing partnership with AVID allowed us to make this dream a reality for the community and get more women out on the field.” Earlier this year, Bloomdale sponsored the inaugural Diggers Rest Community Festival which saw DRFNC and the Diggers Rest Bulla Village Cricket Club — another long term Bloomdale grant recipient — host free sports clinics, a sausage sizzle, petting zoo, Easter event and more for locals.

“There aren’t a lot of free community events like that anymore, so we are really looking forward to continuing the festival for years to come,” Mr Morse said. Another major event in Bloomdale’s sponsorship calendar is the annual Diggers Rest Community Christmas Carols which is hosted by the Lions Club of Diggers Rest in collaboration with Melton Council, Diggers Rest Primary School and the Country Fire Association. The event has grown from around 300 attendees in 2014 to close to 2,500 people at last year’s event as Bloomdale residents and the wider community come together to celebrate.

“Bloomdale is one of our longest serving sponsors, we’ve developed a fabulous working relationship with the AVID team over the years – they are always eager to help us maintain the club and bring our projects to life.” – Ben Morse, DRFNC President

WORKING LOCALLY FOR GLOBAL CHANGE Take three items of rubbish with you when you leave a public space – this simple message has sparked local action that ignited a global movement.

Australia is home to some of the most beautiful natural wonders on Earth, and local heroes have emerged throughout AVID’s neighbourhoods to protect these unique icons from the devastating effects of plastic pollution.

This movement is the innovation of Take 3 for the Sea (Take 3), a nonfor-profit organisation on a mission to rid the world’s oceans of plastic pollution. AVID has joined Take 3 on their mission, empowering everyday Aussies to make a positive environmental impact since 2018 when their partnership first began.

“We know sustainability is a priority for our customers, as it is for us, so we are committed to continually improving our sustainability goals and initiatives – we are continually learning through our partnership with Take 3,” said AVID General Manager of Marketing and Customer, Linda Walsh. Take 3 CEO Jacquie Riddell said they are pleased to have AVID’s ongoing support and hope their approach will spark industry change. “We are thrilled to partner with an organisation that is committed to sustainability, which recognises that global change begins at a local level,” said CEO Jacquie Riddell. “Now is the time for businesses, schools and the wider community to unite and protect the environment for our planet’s future. This message is really powerful coming from an organisation in the development industry; we hope AVID’s approach will inspire the broader industry to rethink their environmental legacy.”

Participants in local clean-up events Together, AVID and Take 3 educate and inspire genuine change to make a tangible difference to the regions where their residential communities are located. The grassroots initiative is delivered through a series of free local events, including clean-up days, exclusive film screenings, school education programs and a digital awareness campaign. The movement has been embraced by AVID residents and the wider community, who have been acting for the good of the planet and future generations. The significant impact of their efforts is evident through the considerable amount of waste they have prevented from entering the world’s oceans. AVID continue to assist with stewarding the Take 3 message, fostering relationships with residents, local community and industry groups through ongoing communication and events.

Diggers Rest Primary School Clean Up Event

Hillstowe Officer, Victoria Harmony Palmview, Queensland Palmview State Secondary College (PSSC) students learnt about the global Take 3 for the Sea movement as part of their year 7 and 8 curriculum. AVID’s Harmony community worked with Alicia Harris, Head of Department – Global Learners Institute, PSSC to incorporate the Take 3 education program into the schools Term 3 lesson plan. The next generation of ‘Ocean Warriors’ collected more than 3kg of rubbish and felt empowered about the positive impact they had made to the local environment in their first class.

Together

Students were then split into groups to work on an important project across the remainder of the term, which will see them explore and present ideas of what they could implement to reduce plastic waste in their community. Ms Harris said, “Many of our students are really passionate about the environment and were thrilled to have someone from Take 3 at the school to facilitate an authentic, active learning experience.”

Officer Primary School (OPS) year 5 and 6 students traded the classroom for the outdoors to tackle plastic pollution with Take 3 for the Sea. Students participated in a hands-on workshop funded by AVID’s Hillstowe community, in an effort to spread the important message of ocean conservation. During the workshop, students embraced their new roles as ‘Sea Rangers’ collecting more than 7kg of plastic rubbish and creating an action plan to help reduce plastic waste both at home and school. Julian De Zilva, Year 5/6 teacher and Learning Specialist at OPS said, “Creating awareness about the impacts of plastic pollution from a young age is crucial. It helps children understand the consequences of plastic waste on the environment and gives them the opportunity to begin affecting positive change.”

“Outside funding provides additional opportunities for the school; we are extremely grateful for AVID’s sponsorship as it allows us to deliver this fantastic education program to our students.” – Mr De Zilva

HARMONY SUPPORTS LOCAL

37 “People genuinely want to see each other succeed, they’re actively seeking Harmony operators to fill their needs and our mission is to streamline the process.” – Lauren McCarthy, Business Hub President

Sunshine Coast residents have transformed the popular “support local” mantra, from a trendy hashtag to a way of life. The community at AVID’s Harmony neighbourhood in Palmview are supporting their entrepreneurial neighbours through an organised group – the Harmony Business Hub. Founded by AVID in 2020, the Business Hub was designed to bring people together and support small business owners who live and work in Harmony. Since inception, Harmony’s entrepreneurs have seized the initiative with both hands and the program has grown exponentially, with the online directory boasting more than 700 local members. “It is incredible to see what our residents have achieved. What started as a small networking group has matured over time to a newly formed incorporated association,” said AVID Queensland Community Development Officer Sarah Tebbutt. In order for the Business Hub to continue its rapid growth, AVID supplied seed funding for the group to become a registered not-for-profit organisation, run by members. This allows the Business Hub to receive donations which are used to advertise and sponsor community events including twilight markets and networking functions. “The community have taken the reigns from us and created something incredible, it is a true reflection of the community spirit here at Harmony. We are seeing small business owners supporting each other and residents purchasing goods and services from their neighbours,” said Sarah. Members of the Business Hub meet monthly to collaborate on strategy, swap services and offer advice to one another. The group runs a popular Facebook page that acts as a directory, connecting local businesses with customers.

“Harmony neighbours are treating our community business landscape as if we are a small town, connecting with their local accountant, handyman, beautician, psychologist or yoga instructor. It’s phenomenal to see so many businesses alive and thriving – quite literally – in our backyard.” One of the many success stories to come out of the Harmony Business Hub is Ollie’s Dog Treats, run by fifteen-year-old resident Ollie Akester, who grew his business with support from Hub members. You can read about Ollie’s journey on pages 8 and 9 in this edition of Together Magazine. AVID’s Covella community in Greenbank has followed in Harmony’s footsteps with the Covella Business Hub, launched late-July 2023. To find out more about Harmony, please visit www.harmony.avid.com.au

“Personality in your home is essential, but perfecting the colour and undertones before introducing vibrant, trending colours is the best way to achieve a timeless colour palette.” Together

– Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux

Paint: Walls – Dulux Snowy Mountains Half; Fireplace wall above – Dulux Snow Season Photography: Anson Smart. Stylist: Kerrie-Anne Jones Image by Dulux.

In our last edition, Dulux’s talented colour guru Andrea Lucena-Orr guided us through emerging colour trends, breaking down the season’s must have pastels, deep winter blues, and rich earthy tones. This time, Andrea shares her wisdom once again, bringing it back to basics with a go-to guide on how to select the right whites and undertones as the foundation of your spaces.

43

BREAKING DOWN WHITES AND NEUTRALS Choosing a white or neutral wall might seem straight forward but there’s a lot more to white than meets the eye. White and neutral paint comes in all forms, in large part due to their undertones. Often you can’t tell the difference between whites until you line them all up next to each other and then you start to see that some may have a more green undertone, while others may have red or yellow undertones. These undertones can make whites and neutrals appear either warmer or cooler. Understanding all of these basics and breaking down undertones as you select your colour is a very important starting point that’ll leave you with effortlessly chic walls throughout your home.

TAKE YOUR TIME You see the walls in your home every single day, so you want to make sure they set a tone and have the right aesthetic that makes you feel comfortable and at ease. You might love the look of a certain white or neutral colour chip in store but once you take it home, it doesn’t really suit how you’d imagined it would. A hot tip is to bring the sample pots home with you, paint on some cardboard and put them against the walls of your home. Keep them up for a few days to really get used to the colour and decide if it’s the right one, or if you need to make slight adjustments.

FIXTURES, FITTINGS, AND FURNITURE Another reason to take your time with selecting your colour is that you want to ensure it complements your existing fittings, fixtures, and furnishings. Elements such as flooring, your bedhead, or favourite artwork, drapes/ blinds or kitchen cabinets will already have their own undertones that should be considered when choosing your paint to tie the whole room together. For example, if your kitchen cabinetry is a darker wood choosing a warmer neutral or white will tie in better than selecting a more stark, cool white. Placing your samples against your existing furnishings in each room will make it so much easier to find the right shade that will enhance your space.

Paint: Left walls & ceiling – Dulux Stowe White; Right wall – Dulux New Penny Photography: Lisa Cohen. Stylist: Bree Leech Image by Dulux.

CONSIDER YOUR LIGHTING Lighting is absolutely critical to how you view a colour. As each room has a different aspect, your living room might be much lighter during the day than your bedrooms so it’s important to determine whether a different colour is needed for different rooms. While you have your samples up around the house, take note of how the colours are perceived on dull rainy days, in artificial light, and against your favourite lamps or statement chandeliers. In rooms with lots of sunlight, consider cooler whites and neutrals that will perceptually make the room feel cooler, even on a sunny, summer’s day. For darker, usually colder rooms, introduce warmer tones to create more light reflectance and a more intimate, comfortable feel.

ADD A POP OF COLOUR Now it’s time for the fun to begin. Adding some bold colours to your home is a great way to add character. Introducing colour doesn’t have to be a drastic move, it can be something as simple as vibrant throws, cushions, furniture, or bedheads. If you want to introduce coloured paint, think about whether your colours are warm or cool toned to make sure you pick a shade that will complement the existing whites and neutrals. Feature walls are a great starting point for colour and can add character to each room without overpowering the space. A hot tip is adding a bold statement colour behind shelves for a discrete, elevated look or behind your bed to add in mood and atmosphere to a bedroom. Personality in your home is essential, but perfecting the colour and undertones before introducing vibrant, trending colours is the best way to achieve a timeless colour palette that will add an emotive connection to your home.

FOLLOW THIS GUIDE TO GET YOUR UNIQUE STORY OFF THE SCREEN AND ONTO YOUR WALL

Frame it Choose frames in a variety of sizes and thickness, consider some that cater to multiple prints or use a mixture of round and square shapes to add depth. You can also tie the texture and colour of your frames to your chosen theme. A general rule to help mismatched frames look cohesive, is to select no more than two or three varying colours or styles.

Nex t up

Location, location Begin by selecting your gallery wall. When choosing the space, consider the aesthetic of the room and decide if you will use the entire available area (floor to ceiling) or just a portion of the wall. Gallery items look best when there is an equal amount of space between the frames, so ensure your chosen area caters for a portion of ‘blank space’ as well.

Map it out Trace your frames onto paper so you can experiment with the composition of your wall gallery without the permanence of a hammer and nail. Start by positioning placeholders for larger frames and build the smaller ones out around them, leaving an even gap between each piece. You may like to keep frames in their packaging so they can be returned if they do not get used in the final layout.

2

5

Image curation When selecting your images, include a range of portrait and landscape shots to add interest to the overall design of your display. Ensure photos suit the location of your gallery wall and the room’s purpose, for example the living room versus the home office or entryway. This is also the time to decide if you will follow a theme – you may like to print images in black and white, or perhaps include artwork to bring the concept together.

Commit Starting from the top left, secure your frames to the gallery wall. Once each item is placed use a keen eye or a level to ensure frames are straight. Finally wipe away any dust or fingerprints, then stand back and admire your hard work!

Once you’ve unpacked and settled in, many people choose to focus on the garden as their first project. Fortunately, in Australia there is so much we can do with our outdoor spaces to allow for quiet or active enjoyment of the great outdoors.

Outdoor furniture Invest in quality, practical outdoor furniture. Choose durable, weather-resistant furniture that can withstand the elements. Materials like teak, aluminium, rattan, or resin wicker are excellent choices for outdoor dining sets. Style seating with comfortable cushions to add a pop of colour and texture to your space. Tableware

Temperature control

Select tableware made from melamine or bamboo. These materials are great eco-alternatives to plastic and come in a range of patterns and colourways. Be adventurous, mix and match different shapes and dining sets to create your own unique table setting.

If your alfresco dining space lacks natural shade, consider adding an awning, pergola, or umbrella for sun protection – there are an abundance of shapes, sizes and colourways available to suit your space. In the cooler months, heating elements like fire pits, electric or gas burners and stylish throw blankets will keep you and your guests toasty.

Ambient lighting String lights, lanterns, or outdoor wall sconces add a touch of charm and functionality to the space. Incorporate soft lighting with warm tones to create an inviting atmosphere for evening dining. Alfresco cooking An outdoor cooking space is often the centre of a social gathering and a great way to get guests involved in meal preparation. Charcoal grills, BBQs and pizza ovens come in a variety of sizes to suit any space. Consider adding potted herbs to your alfresco cooking area for seasoning food and drink on the go.

Nex t up

Greenery Plants add natural beauty to the outdoor space. They soften the hard edges of a patio or deck and provide a colourful touch to the overall design. Climbing plants are a great option as they provide shade, privacy and beautiful blooms. Flowers and even dwarf citrus trees thrive in pots and add a refreshing scent to any alfresco area. Succulents are low maintenance and will bring interesting texture to the space.

CAFÉ HARMONY AT PALMVIEW

53 For Darren, Café Harmony’s owner and chef in the heart of Palmview, Queensland, this is more than just a delectable crème brûlée recipe. To see the latest updates from Café Harmony at Palmview, please follow www.facebook.com/cafeharmonyqld

CRÈME BRÛLÉE Ingredients & equipment ○ 1 vanilla bean ○ 215ml thickened cream ○ 4 egg yolks ○ 42g caster sugar ○ 4 ramekins ○ Blow torch (optional)

Optional

When inducing the cream with vanilla bean you can add other flavours such as orange rind.

Makes 4 serves

Cook Time 25 – 30 minutes

Method 1.

Split your vanilla bean and scrape it into a saucepan.

2. Add the thickened cream and place the saucepan on a low heat for 10 minutes, being careful the cream doesn’t boil. 3. While the cream and the vanilla bean are heating, whisk the egg yolks and sugar to a pale colour in a metal bowl. 4. Gradually pour the cream mixture through a sieve onto the eggs and sugar, whisking continuously as you pour, this will produce a custard mix. 5. Using a low heat, simmer a small amount of water in another saucepan and place a metal bowl over the pan, ensuring the water does not touch the bowl.

After going on holidays to France as a child, this iconic European dessert launched his passion for cooking. This crème brûlée recipe is a favourite among his family and is sure to impress all your guests next time you entertain. 6. Add the custard mix into the bowl and stir with a spatula for 10 minutes or until the custard mix is thickened (Be careful not to overheat and scramble the custard. However, if this does happen a stick blender should revive the dish). 7. Once thickened, pass the custard through a sieve into a jug and pour into ramekins. 8. Place in the fridge and allow the mix to cool. 9. To serve, sprinkle some extra caster sugar on top of each dish – either use a small blow torch or place the custard under a very hot grill until the sugar is caramelised.

Feature walls

Lighting

Decals are the simplest way to decorate a wall, they are easily removed when you are ready for a change and are gentle on paint. Other options include wallpaper, wall panelling or contrasting paint colour on a single wall. You may also like to incorporate some quirky feature hanging hooks – they look great on their own but are also good for frequently used items like robes, hats and jackets, especially where space is limited.

Including a variety of lighting options is recommended. Bedside lamps should be warm light for relaxation, while pendant lighting for task areas and desks are best suited to a daylight selection. String lighting or muted night lights are a beautiful addition to add a soft glow to the room. Blinds or shutters are great for blocking out light and keeping the room cool, whilst sheer curtains soften the look of the room and provide filtered light during the day.

Artwork and wall décor

Shared bedrooms

Framing your child’s artwork and hanging it in their room gives an original look and your budding artist will be chuffed. You can also incorporate wall hangings such as bunting, an interestingly shaped mirror, framed prints or canvasses and wall mounted shelves double as a display for favourite books and toys as well as storage.

Consider using a bookcase as a room divider to either separate sleep and play areas, or provide each child their own space. Single beds with storage underneath are great space savers and bunks with an integrated desk or chest of drawers streamline the layout of the room and reduce clutter.

Pattern and texture Textile layering adds both interest and warmth to your child’s space. You can add texture through the type of fabrics used on cushions and rugs as well as with woven and chunky knit blankets and throws. Try experimenting by mixing and matching patterns keeping the colour palette cohesive.

Furniture and storage A walk-in robe is highly sought after, it can be customised with joinery to incorporate rails, drawers and shelving. In addition to this, multipurpose and adaptable furniture pieces will provide longevity to the space. Examples include ottomans that can be used for storage and seating, cots that convert to beds and change tables that can later be used as a chest of drawers.

Remember your child’s bedroom is their special place, be sure to factor in their likes and dislikes when making changes – or better yet involve them in the process.
