SEASON OF THANKS

TALK OF THE TOWN

I HAVE A STRONG MORNING ROUTINE—almost nothing gets in the way of it. And one of the most important parts of my routine is writing in my gratitude journal. It’s one of the habits I’ve adopted that has made the most significant impact on my life. When I first started, I felt like I was writing the same things repeatedly. But I realized that doesn’t matter. It’s the simple act of noticing the things in your everyday life that you can be thankful for that is so powerful. Sometimes it’s a job promotion or a negative test result. Other times, it’s as simple as a delicious cup of coffee or a text from an old friend. Instead of my usual recap of the great AvidLifestyle articles in this issue, I’d like to share things some of our staff members are grateful for today, every day and this holiday season. May this list inspire you to practice gratitude in your daily life. Allen Walters: I am very grateful to have a wonderful family and great friends; being married to Nancy, the love of my life, for 41+ years; and the opportunity to own a business in an industry that I am passionate about and work with such great and talented people. Lori Perry: My faith in God; family: my mom, Chuckie, my son, Josh, and my daughter-in-law, Andi; my four dogs Cheyenne, Dakota, Willow and Mercedes; and my work and clients. Jim Bebbington: I am grateful for my parents, John and Jean. They were not perfect, but they did pretty damn well. They deserve their rest. I am grateful for my family—including the one’s I hope to meet in the future; they are all that really matters. I am grateful for the amazing variety, beauty and kindness of people I have met and the world around us; we live in an awesome place, and we need to take good care of each other and our home. Chris Phillips: My family, the people I have worked with over the years, health for me and the people around me, and Coach Prime! Brenna Farrell: I am grateful for so many things! My amazing family; my boyfriend, Ryan; my circle of friends; my crazy pup, Oscar; my neighbors, coffee and chocolate; yoga pants; and fresh produce from my garden!

Something for everyone. CURRENTLY IN DOWNTOWN PARKER AND DOWNTOWN LITTLETON!

Chris DeConna: My daughter, Harper; the friends, colleagues and peers, as well as my family that have helped me get to where I am today; Cheba Hut Kali Mist on garlic bread; Trader Joes; fantasy sports; group chat; Adobe Creative Cloud; fire pits; the month of October in Colorado; and Cherry Creek North. A few things I am grateful for include of course, my two amazing daughters, Haley and Hanna; my crazy pups, Juniper and Winnie; strong morning coffee; a pedicure with sparkly polish; big, bold earrings; being barefoot; sweater weather; and so many, many more things. I’m sure you notice that it’s not just about the big things in life. Happiness comes in the little moments, too, and it’s such a blessing to express gratitude for it all. I wish you all the best throughout this holiday season and every day thereafter.

The Sweetest Season Please your family and ease holiday strain with tasty treats from DENVER’S BEST BAKERIES By John Lehndorff

THERE ARE SPECIFIC BAKED GOODS we expect and hope for that define the holiday season’s special events: pies for Thanksgiving, sufganiyot for Hanukkah, frosted cookies for work parties and bûche de Noël for Christmas. That doesn’t include the buns, breads and other sweets we all grew up on and still crave, often treats from our origin nations. For the slightly overwhelmed host, we have some serious advice: You don’t need to make—or bake—everything. The abundance of excellent nearby bakeries makes it easy to check off one thing on your big to-do list, whether you need panettone loaves or pfeffernüesse cookies. Even the dreaded fruitcake! One of the joys of the season is visiting the bakeries for “research” and inhaling the sweet, buttery aromas. Almost every shop in our holiday bakery guide offers some gluten-free and diet-sensitive goodies so everyone in the family can partake. Virtually all of these Denver bakeries are family owned and staffed. Reduce anxiety by ordering your favorites several weeks ahead to guarantee you’ll get the goods. After all, you are definitely not the only Denver-area host trying to satisfy friends and family at a holiday gathering.

THE WIDE WORLD OF INTERNATIONAL PASTRIES

Many Denver-area bakeries specialize in baked goods from specific countries and regions including: Indian: Babu's Indian-inspired Treats, Aurora, mybabus.com Eastern European: Royal Bakery, Arvada, royalbakeryco.com Scandinavian: Taste of Denmark Bakery, Lakewood, tasteofdenmark.net Japanese: Tokyo Premium Bakery, Denver, tokyopremiumbakery.com Dutch: Boonzaaijer Dutch Bakery, Colorado Springs, dutchpastry.com

HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS are a fun and festive way to decorate your home By Heather Shoning

“When creating a holiday arrangement, it is important your flower selection represents your desired color scheme.” —ANASTASIA OVANESSOFF

Juniper & Honey Designs

FRESH FLOWERS are a lovely addition to the home any time of the year—they bring joy, color and fragrance. And they are a gorgeous way to decorate—or supplement your decorations—for the holidays. You can make the arrangements yourself if you’re feeling creative and have the time or visit your favorite florist to order the perfect combination of bouquets, centerpieces, garlands and wreaths.

Both pros agree that more traditional floral designs include primary and secondary blooms plus fillers and foliage. “Primary flowers are blooms with bigger faces, such as roses, and secondary flowers are smaller-faced blooms, such as ranunculus,” Ovanessoff says. “Filler flowers can be blooms such as baby’s breath or astilbe, and foliage can be a mix of seasonal greenery such as pine and eucalyptus.”

If Christmas is not your holiday, or you’d like to keep your arrangements a bit more neutral, Kim Zimmerman, owner of Rowdy Poppy, suggests muted color palettes. “This looks like deep chestnut, warm bronze, straw, ivory and white, and silvery grays and greens,” she says. “This is also a great opportunity to utilize all the flowers we’ve been drying from our growing season: strawflower, dahlias, roses, celosia, grasses, poppy pods, various thistles and more.” In addition to being a floral designer, Zimmerman and her wife, Michelle, operate a fully sustainable farm. During the growing season, the arrangements they make are primarily from the flowers grown onsite.

“When creating a holiday arrangement, it is important your flower selection represents your desired color scheme,” says Anastasia Ovanessoff, Juniper & Honey Designs owner. “One of my favorite holiday color combinations is deep red, blush and forest greens. You can also incorporate holiday ornaments to add festive flare to your floral display.”

If you’re planning multiple arrangements throughout your entertaining areas, you want to create some continuity. Ovanessoff recommends using the same foliage and fillers in each arrangement, then using an assortment of other flowers to mix and match. Another way to ensure a cohesive look is with color. “Having a plethora of petite arrangements or budvases is a beautiful way to uplift a space. I would focus on one color and use as many different blooms and textures as I could to reinforce it,” Zimmerman says. If you’re ready to try your hand at making holiday arrangements, Rowdy Poppy offers classes, including seasonal centerpieces in November and wreath-making workshops in November and early December. “We partner with our friends at The Infinite Monkey Theorem each year to use their large event space and fill it to the brim with fresh evergreens,” Zimmerman says. “Classes run approximately two hours and include all instruction, tools, wreath base, greens and accents needed.” She also notes there’s music, libations, snacks and tons of holiday spirit!

Perhaps you want your floral displays to have a modern twist. “Maybe you adore amaryllis in the winter; you could arrange a vase with 20 stems of deep red amaryllis to really catch the eye,” Zimmerman says. “Want more impact? Design three vases, each with only one type or color of bloom, and cluster them as a centerpiece.”

BREAK OUT THE garish Yule sweaters and classic little black

dresses for this year’s holiday cocktail parties. To help make your at-home holiday bash fun for your guests—and you, too—AvidLifestyle asked two Denver hospitality veterans to share their party-giving secrets. Between them, Michelle Kim and Darryl Shoemake have planned and hosted hundreds of holiday parties during their careers.

Most guests don’t want to make decisions, they just want to sip, so don’t set up a full bar. “When I host, I have one special cocktail planned. I make a batch ahead of time and put it into clear bottles,” she says.

Kim is the director of beverage and bar management at Lone Tree’s Sierra restaurant, and Shoemake is president of Jack’s on Pearl in Denver. Both stressed that the secret to enjoying your own party is serious planning. “Have everything already done a day ahead. Put out the glassware and napkins,” Kim says. It means thinking through the logistics of trash cans, drink garnishes and ice cubes.

Be sure to pick a cocktail with broad appeal. “Our most popular winter cocktail is a smoked pecan Manhattan,” Shoemake says. “It’s like sipping a spirited pecan pie. The biggest challenge is calculating how many drinks to have on hand. I’ve found that it works out to an average of two and a half cocktails per person.”

Your cocktail-serving station location matters. Kim says that no matter what, guests end up in the kitchen, so don’t try to change

Don’t worry about serving some stunning Cabernet—not many will notice. They will be too busy talking. Instead, Shoemake says, pour 40

good but affordable wines. “We serve J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks cabernet sauvignon and J. Lohr chardonnay. They deliver flavor like 30-dollar bottles,” he says. Kim suggests making it easy by filling glass carafes with red wine. For white wines, fill a big mason jar with a little spout in the fridge with glasses nearby. Many guests may be drinking less, or not at all. The mocktails you serve should be at least as interesting as the cocktails, including garnishes, and usually can be prepared the night before the party, Kim says. As you plan a great gathering, try to focus on the essentials. Shoemake says, “The biggest thing is not trying to do things while people are there because then you’re not being a good host.” Sierra and Jack’s shared some signature cocktail recipes to help you make a splash with guests. 41

PETS CAN BOOST your mood and mental health By Heather Shoning

THERE’S A REASON #petmemed has 948,000

followers, and the Facebook account Animal Memes has 1.6 million. People get joy from pets. In addition to populating our screens, the American Pet Products Association statistics show that 66 percent of U.S. households (86.9 million homes) have a pet. They can have a significant impact on our mental—and physical—health, as well as giving us relief from seasonal blues.

Interacting with pets, such as petting a cat or playing with a dog, can trigger the release of oxytocin, a hormone that helps reduce stress and anxiety. This can lead to lower blood pressure and heart rate, promoting relaxation. Pets offer unconditional love and companionship and can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation. Having a pet to interact with can reduce feelings of withdrawal and depression. In addition, walking a dog or taking a pet to a park can lead to social interactions with other pet owners, fostering a sense of community and reducing feelings of social isolation.

A 2018 study by BMC Psychiatry qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed the effects of pet ownership on people living with mental health conditions. Participants who reported losing their sense of purpose following a mental health diagnosis felt significantly more in control of the direction of their lives after bringing home a pet. Some even went so far as to say that their pet gave them a reason to live.

Focusing on the needs of a pet can serve as a distraction from negative thoughts and worries, helping to break the cycle of rumination common in many mental health disorders. Caring for a pet requires establishing a routine for feeding, grooming and exercise. This can provide a sense of purpose and structure to one’s day, which can be especially beneficial for individuals struggling with depression or other mood disorders. Pets are good listeners. Talking to or confiding in a pet can provide an outlet for emotional expression, which can be especially helpful when an individual is hesitant to share their feelings with others. Some people find comfort in having a pet, as it can create a sense of security and reduce feelings of fear or anxiety from being home alone or living alone. Pets can also positively impact mental and physical health simultaneously through physical activity. A 2023 British Journal of Sports Medicine umbrella review of 97 systematic reviews with meta-analyses revealed that exercise may be up to 1.5 times more effective in reducing symptoms of common mental health conditions than traditional treatment methods. particular, require regular exercise, encouraging owners to engage in physical activity. Before getting a pet for physical health, it’s essential to consider that while most dogs need regular walks to be healthy, there are differences in how much exercise different breeds can tolerate.

While pets can provide significant mental health benefits, they also come with responsibilities and may not be suitable for everyone. Considering factors like lifestyle, living situation and allergies is crucial before getting a pet. Additionally, individuals with severe mental health issues should consult with a health care professional to determine the best treatment plan, which may include traditional therapies and/or medication in addition to the companionship of a pet. This therapist-gone-rogue strives to HELP WOMEN be their best selves in all areas of their lives By Heather Shoning Photos Courtesy of Hilary Silver Enterprises

FIFTEEN YEARS OF PRACTICING traditional therapy left Hilary

“totally transformed woman; one who loves herself unconditionally, trusts herself implicitly, shows up authentically and fearlessly.” This deep work allows them to go on and create the kind of relationship with a partner who’s equally as extraordinary as they are. That said, it’s not always an easy pill for clients to swallow. “I’ve always been somewhat rogue, and I never really fit in with my old therapy counterparts because I have a different approach.” Silver’s philosophy says: You’re the problem, which is great news because then you can be the solution, too.

Silver frustrated with the model of focusing on day-to-day problems. “Clients would arrive in my office talking about top-of-mind issues and what’s going on in their lives right now,” she says. “That keeps the relationship between the therapist and the client focused on the day-to-day and the surface topics.” Silver sought to work herself out of a job, not to keep seeing patients week in and week out, only scratching the surface. Couple that with the industry tenants that the therapist-client relationship is paramount to healing and that the role of a therapist is not to tell a client what to do but to let them draw their own conclusions, and Silver found herself stepping away from traditional therapy and into coaching. “I always believed that by the time people were investing their time and their energy and their money to come for my help, what they really wanted were answers,” she says. “I found myself spending the first ten or fifteen minutes of every therapy session teaching people what I felt was relevant to what they needed to grow. That’s where my coaching practice was born because I found myself developing curriculum.”

“I don’t want to help [women] just temporarily feel better. I actually want to help them be better.”

Ready for Love was born to help women break out of patterns that no longer serve them and to help them show up in life as the most confident, vibrant, empowered, authentic, vulnerable version of themselves. The program is also not just for women seeking love—the 12-week program is designed to help them become a

“I’ve always been somewhat rogue, and I never really fit in with my old therapy counterparts because I have a different approach.”

“I always want to be the problem in my life when something’s not working because then I can just decide that I’m going to look at myself and see how I’m getting in my own way and make some changes,” she says. “It’s about helping people take radical responsibility for themselves. And it doesn’t matter what happened to you in your past. It’s your responsibility to decide what you are going to do with it moving forward.”

READY FOR LOVE, INC.

Hailing from the Midwest and having traveled to more than 30 countries, the Denver-area resident moved to Colorado when she was 27 for “all things outdoors,” she says. She met her husband, whom she’s been with for 23 years, and the couple has two teenage children.

Although she now runs a multi-million-dollar company, she says her work schedule works around her life and not the other way around. The decision to leave traditional therapy models behind and help clients in her own way was the best decision she ever made—for herself and her clients. “Most women feel relieved, they feel optimistic, they feel hopeful about their future, and they feel completely empowered,” Silver says. “Then they go on to break lifelong patterns. I don’t want to help them just temporarily feel better. I actually want to help them be better.”

WINE AND DINE ON THE RAILS Get a taste of what LUXURY RAIL TRAVEL was like at the advent of the 20th century By Kim D. McHugh

NAPA, CALIFORNIA , world-renowned for its acclaimed

wines and oft-toured wineries, gives visitors a memorable way to learn more about the valley’s history and enjoy its bounties—the Napa Valley Wine Train. Passengers boarding this historic train discover that the rail line was funded in 1864 by Samuel Brannen, San Francisco’s first millionaire, and built to transport wealthy guests north to his spa retreat in Calistoga. The Wine Train offers numerous experiences that take travelers on a three-hour journey from Napa to St. Helena. Stretching 36 miles, the round-trip adventure features elegant lunches and dinners, Murder Mystery evenings and seasonal rides, including Thanksgiving and the Santa Train Jolly Journey. Once you’ve decided on which trip to enjoy—the Legacy Experience, Gourmet Express, Tasting on the Rails, Chandon Secret Garden Afternoon Tea, Grgich Hills Estate Tasting, Grape Stomp at Grgich Hills or Vista Dome—it’s time to board, sit back and savor both the scenery and the culinary delights. Masterfully renovated to showcase Honduran mahogany paneling, etched glass partitions, beautifully upholstered chairs and tables adorned with white tablecloths, the 1015 and 1100 Pullman dining cars, built in 1915 and 1917 respectively, transport riders on the Gourmet Express trips. Similarly restored to their 1915 glory days are the 1017 and 1018 Pullman lounge cars, with plush armchairs and banquette seating areas inviting patrons to relax and enjoy the countryside while sipping bubbly or locally produced wines. Also stylishly refurbished are the 1013 Pullman passenger car and 1101 Pullman car, with interiors that create a welcoming atmosphere. A special treat is riding upstairs in the 1085 Pullman Standard Dome Car. Built in 1952, it, too, has etched glass partitions, tables draped with white tablecloths and banquette seating. Guests traveling by day savor their meals accompanied by exceptional vistas of the vineyards. Regardless of where you choose to wine and dine, prepare to be blown away by inspired cuisine.

“The Napa Valley Wine Train follows the same fine dining standards you would expect to see at an award-winning restaurant and prioritizes using local and seasonal ingredients. Our culinary team prepares multi-course menus to order in the train’s kitchen cars so we can serve dishes the second they are ready,” says executive chef Rodrigo Cuadra. Risotto, pasta with vegetables, grilled beef tenderloin, ricotta cheese gnocchi, roasted citrus garlic chicken, pan-seared duck breast, squash polenta, yam ravioli and smoked salmon crêpes satiate tastebuds. Starters such as cambozola apple salad, soup du jour, bibb lettuce salad with blue cheese and shaved fennel, pan-seared scallops, rabbit confit and a charcuterie board with seasonal veggies, artisan cheeses and finely sliced meats are popular as well.

“Every day, my team and I aim to give guests the best dining experience possible to create unforgettable memories with us,” Cuadra says. “The cherry on top for many of our guests is when our team strolls through the dining cars toward the end of meal service to touch tables and show our appreciation for them coming aboard.”
