WE CREATE WE CREATE AND IMPLEMENT EMPLOYEE AND SUPPLY CHAIN ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMMES THAT ARE DRIVEN BY BUSINESS VALUES

Marks and Spencer approached us to help meet its Plan A target to train 500,000 workers in their supply chain by 2015. Working closely with Marks and Spencer’s regional supply team in Sri Lanka, we developed ideas for training themes that would resonate with the factories and their employees in Sri Lanka. Our team of researchers, designers and service designers then collaborated with factory managers to develop a new approach to training that took the form of weeklong campaigns. As a result, Healthy Week Toolkits were born. Healthy Week Toolkits provide step-bystep instructions together with digital and print information, advice and guidance materials for factory managers to run and evaluate weeklong training campaigns. By engaging factory managers in the design of the training concept, we created a simple, creative and practical training solution for managers.

We piloted Healthy Week in Sri Lanka in October 2012 in eight factories, which saw factories run a range of activities including water consumption competitions, factory gardens and cooking demonstrations. Mobile polling conducted after the Week showed that 23% more workers drank the recommended levels of water and 50% more workers were able to correctly identify how to mitigate disease.

This new approach to training, not only enabled M&S and its suppliers to train a large amount of workers (13,500) in a very short time period, it also provided an engaging and cost effective alternative to classroom training.

This new approach to training, not only enabled M&S and its suppliers to train a large amount of workers (13,500) in a very short time period, it also provided an engaging and cost effective alternative to classroom training. Importantly, by working with factory managers to design the toolkits, we also helped create an army of champions for the future roll out of the training. The enthusiasm for the toolkits has led us to co-design new toolkits for M&S UK’s suppliers, which are currently being piloted in M&S’s food factories.
