WE ENGAGE WE ENGAGE AND MOBILISE COMMUNITIES TO SUPPORT SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS
SINCE 2011, WE HAVE BEEN WORKING TO MOBILISE BUSINESSES, CHARITIES AND EVERYONE IN BETWEEN TO OPEN UP THEIR SPACES INCLUDING SAATCHI GALLERY, SPITALFIELDS MARKET AND RICH MIX.
950,000 or just over 20% of young people (16 – 24 years old) are unemployed in the UK and a further 1.65 million are not in work and not looking at work. At the same time, one fifth of high street stores are under threat of closure. To tackle these issues, we are working to unlock underused or disused spaces to enable young people to pursue their creative and entrepreneurial ideas as the London Coordinator for somewhereto_. This exciting national Big Lottery funded project makes use of two key assets: young people and space to inspire young people to find new ways of pursue new ventures. Since 2011, we have been working to mobilise businesses, charities and everyone in between to open up their spaces including Saatchi Gallery, Spitalfields Market and Rich Mix. We work closely with young people aged 16 – 25 years old to support them to access the space, negotiate relationships with space holders and to network with relevant stakeholders. In this time, somewhereto_ has opened up 708 different spaces and in 2013 alone, matched nearly 1200 young people to spaces around the country. Over this time, we have provided young people with rehearsal spaces, recording studios, hanging spaces, column inches, market stalls and pop-up shops.
In a time of high unemployment and continuing low business growth, it is crucial that we do more to connect people to spaces in their communities as well as to support young people to pursue their entrepreneurial ideas. somewhereto_ does just that by mobilising communities to provide the spaces to empower young people to take action.
