INTROVERTED PUBLIC SPACE

THE ISSUE

The current state of public spaces are designed for community, gathering, and socialization. They are intended for everyone’s use, however, these characteristics can cause discomfort and stress to those who are introverted. Introversion is a personality trait characterized by a preference for solitude and quiet environments, as well as a tendency to focus inwardly on one’s own thoughts and feelings. Current public space is designed to create stimulation, which inhibits the ability to slow down and have moments of self-reflection which overtime becomes uncomfortable. In turn, this can leave an individual feeling drained and stressed, so they leave or avoid these spaces all together.

SOLUTION

Architectural installations within existing public spaces can act as human charging stations.

USE OF INTERSTITIAL SPACE

Interstitial spaces offer characteristics beneficial to an introverted space. by implementing the design within an unused part of an already existing public space, the design can improve a public space without removing existing activity that is being used. the design is inclusive to anyone in want of slowing down, but not meant to take away

HOUSE OF CARDS

Located on thirty acres of pasture along Bayou Borbeaux, this one-room retreat was a design/build project designed to help develop Honey Locust retreat space where individuals can apply for shortterm residency. This space will be for artists, scholars, and creative visionaries to soak up a natural setting and gain inspiration from the environment around.

Recycled wood from a deconstructed barn that was on site was used to create the formwork of the main material, reinforced concrete, as well as dying the

04OUR LADY OF FATIMA SCHOOL CAMPUS MASTER PLAN

HOLLY & SMITH ARCHITECTS

Consists of campus master plan including 5 phases over a ten year span. Onboarded onto this project after its design workshops and user meetings.

MY ROLE:

Graphical and design work on a masterplan book and visual presentation for the client. These visual contributions are now instilled as a template/standard for masterplanning within Holly & Smith Architects.

SITE ANALYSIS

ULL Engineering Building’s design concept stems from the existing engineering building adjacent and how to create connection from old to new. The building bridges over hangout space and walkway to maintain campus connection. The bridge then connects to the existing engineering building to maintain disciplinary connection.

MY ROLE:

I was onboarded onto this project at construction document phase and was responsible for detailing building envelope, and overall and set organization. Collaboration Spaces 64,000 SF
