DEAR READERS, THE FIRST TIME I ever heard of Chris Blackwell was when I went to stay at Pink Sands in 2006, his hotel in the Bahamas. As a treat, my parents decided to take me to the hot resort that was getting so much buzz. We were not disappointed—it was the epitome of laid-back chic. And we were not the only ones to think so. I remember seeing Anna Wintour ordering lunch at the Blue Bar (one burger, no bun), Frédéric Fekkai playing pool and various golden-hued models wafting around the place. But even more impressive than the resort itself were the people who ran it. Clemens and Nancy von Merveldt, Blackwell’s longtime manager and his wife, cared for the place like it was their own. As a guest, you felt completely looked after.

Blackwell’s got many skills, but probably his most impressive is his ability to choose good people to work with and keep them working with him for a very long time. This goes for everyone from Bob Marley to the 22-year veteran CFO of Island Outposts, Meg Friedman. I returned a year or two later with my then boyfriend and it’s the place we announced our engagement to my parents. I’ll always associate Pink Sands (and by extension, Chris Blackwell) with that happy moment in my life. Marriage and two children later, Hugh and I took a vacation to Jamaica last year and stayed at another of Blackwell’s resorts, Strawberry Hill (where we were thrilled to see Clemens and Nancy again, running another Blackwell property).

“Blackwell’s got many skills, but probably his most impressive is his ability to choose good people.” Perusing the gift shop, I happened upon The Lindo Legacy. I bought it and read it from cover to cover, bowled over by the story of his family and the risk he took backing Bob Marley. Any slice of Blackwell’s life could be made into a movie, let alone all of it. It’s been exactly a year since that trip to Jamaica, and as we settle in for another snowstorm, a trip to GoldenEye sure does sound good right now. Guess I’ll just have to settle for a hot toddy made with Blackwell’s rum instead. Bottoms up! Daisy Prince

erhaps the only redeeming moments in February are the Oscars, Valentine’s Day (but it could go either way), and, this year, a culling of all those very worthy presidential hopefuls. Sigh. So perhaps you will understand why I will harken back to our very best season in town for my little report. Maybe you have seen Lee Radziwill, regally strolling her Upper East Side neighborhood. Thin, elegant, her fine features and grace essentially unchanged. But she has lived many decades of a rarefied and fascinating life, with stories about Nureyev and Capote among others, and that is why we celebrated her second volume of anecdotes and photos: Lee. “I actually have enough to fill a third and fourth volume,” she told us, so stand by. This volume was feted by Reinaldo Herrera and Jay Fielden, editor in chief of Town & Country magazine, at a private club that will, in deference to the rulebook, go unnamed, but know that it often follows “babbling.” And what a beauty that spot was—fire roaring, leather chairs warming, surrounded by books and Lee’s fans . . . a lovely vignette that the pictures will only suggest. The line for an autograph wound through the library, as Lee would rise to greet, thank, and often hug her guests. Peter Beard, Marc Jacobs and Lee Radziwill who wrote the foreword, was first to be hugged, followed by her publisher, Prosper Assouline, and a gaggle of other glamorous fans, including Sofia Coppola, André Balazs, Cornelia Guest, Kenneth Jay Lane, Carolina Herrera, Jamie Creel and Marco Scarani, Dorothy Lichtenstein, Howard Blum, Priscilla Whittle, Ralph Rucci, Judy Taubman and Tiffany Dubin. The literary crowd continued to celebrate at Anne Hearst McInerney, Jay McInerney and George Farias’s (he’s in finance, but reads a lot) annual, beloved Christmas party. Anne murmured something about holiday burnout, and suggested they might skip a Nejma Beard and Dorothy Lichtenstein year, but was met with a “riot.” We are a gentle community. So, one of the most beloved holiday parties again closed out the season at the most festive spot in town—Doubles. “Wendy [Carduner] is the greatest. She oversees all like a champ, and makes sure all runs smoothly. And you can’t beat her holiday decor.” True that. The already red rooms are festooned with all things glittery and festive, and mounds of food lie within. Because that just wasn’t enough, they invited Santa to come and receive us on his generous (thank heavens) lap. Then I spied a mistletoe balloon on Candace Bushnell’s wrist, and simply had to have my own. The balloon artist (Brooklyn Balloon Company) was happy to comply, and off I floated to receive kisses from their almost entirely kissable crowd, including: Eric and Sandra Ripert, Bill Santa and Candace Bushnell Bratton and Rikki Klieman, Nicole Miller and Kim Taipale, Katherine Bryan, Carolyne Roehm, Steve Kroft and Jennet Conant, Donna Tartt (I’m reading The Secret History and love it perhaps more than The Goldfinch), Hilary and Wilbur Ross, Danny Meyer, Muffie Potter Aston, Zang Toi, Robert Zimmerman, Ann Barish, Rudolph and Judith Giuliani, Ken Auletta and Amanda Urban, Gay Talese, Rufus Wainwright, Stephen Petronio, Alex Papachristidis, Alex Hitz, Carol and Earl Mack, Laurie Durning, Dennis Basso, Leila and Henry Heller, Deborah Norville and Morgan Entrekin. A new Christie’s exhibit showcases work by Royal Drawing School artists

Coinciding with this month’s Master Drawings Week New York, Christie’s will exhibit the work of 51 contemporary artists from the Royal Drawing School. Featuring pieces by students, alumni, and faculty, the works are vast and varied but share a common link of Old Master influence. Founded by the Prince of Wales and artist Catherine Goodman in 2000, the School is dedicated to raising the “standard and profile of drawing though teaching and practice.” David Linley, Christie’s Honorary Chairman, Europe, Middle East, Russia and India, said of the collaboration, “When Howard Marks, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Drawing School, asked if Christie’s could help introduce the RDS and its artists, and the school’s important role in arts education to a US audience, I was delighted to be able to organize an exhibition at Christie’s at the same time as the Old Master and British Drawings pre-sale exhibition.” Linley said, “Together, these two exhibitions show a timeline of draughtsmanship from the 16th Century to the present day.” Works on display at the exhibition, which will take over three galleries at Christie’s Rockefeller Center, range from colorful renderings of New York landmarks to more abstract pieces. Included is a portrait of actor Christopher Lee by Stuart Pearson Wright, a detailed 10-foot drawing of the Central Park Zoo drawn entirely from memory by Laura Footes, and a life-sized rendering of a horse by Clara Drummond. SETTING THE STANDARD How Manhattan’s first medical marijuana dispensary came to be, and why it will be a tough act to follow

The opportunity to bring something original to New York is quite rare. It is the city that sets trends more often than follows them. Barriers to enter any business are high: space is minimal, competitive ideas are abundant, and customers are discerning but easily distracted by the next big thing. Which is why when Governor Andrew Cuomo authorized a handful of licenses for medical marijuana dispensaries in New York in July 2015, the opportunity to be part of the team to bring the first one to market was like finding a unicorn. Columbia Care, Manhattan’s first marijuana dispensary, opened its doors January 8 of this year. The current location in Union Square will serve as the New York–based company’s flagship store for additional dispensary and cultivation locations coming to other highly regulated markets throughout the United States. The company is helmed by two Upper East Siders, chairman Michael Abbott and CEO Nicholas Vita—both Goldman Sachs alumni and successful entrepreneurs. A quick glance on Columbia Care’s website will hint toward a point that a tour of the dispensary drives home: This company is on a mission to make medical marijuana readily available, at the highest standard the industry has seen yet. They have

assembled a top-notch leadership team to wipe away any stigmatic impressions that people might have about medical marijuana—starting with the Union Square flagship. One very important consulting expert for the project is Bruce E. Teitelbaum, whose company RPG is creating the national footprint for Columbia Care’s dispensaries. Teitelbaum’s company has designed retail environments and manufactured store fixtures for the likes of Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co., Swarovski, Birchbox and many more. When Abbott and his team received their license in August, they were intent upon being the first to market and set an ambitious opening date of January 8. Teitelbaum came in at the request of Abbott, a longtime family friend, who needed a concept, and needed it executed fast. Though Teitelbaum is a veteran in the retail-branding sphere by most measures, this was a definite first. “Even though we have worked in just about every category, this is not just out of the box; it did not previously exist,” says Teitelbaum. “So, what we’re doing is applying our discipline of branding, design, development, quality manufacturing and consumer engagement and experience all into one package.”

And with that in mind, they created Columbia Care in Union Square. Teitelbaum describes the flagship and prototype as “clean, organized and very comfortable.” He says, “We never forgot the words ‘compassionate care,’” referring to the so-named 2014 gubernatorial act that paved the way for legalizing medical marijuana dispensaries. The space is designed to be accessible and safe for the city’s direly ill who will utilize it. But they also wanted to make sure it didn’t appear sterile; it is in compliance with all health codes, while being aesthetically contemporary, with natural woods and high-tech features. The resulting space is warm and welcoming, can be navigated with comfort and ease, and feels neither like a sterile pharmacy or lab or a less stringently regulated dispensary that one might find in places like California or Colorado. The main lounge area integrates a friendly staff, videos and visuals on the walls, tablets loaded with information, and easy access to pharmacists for anything from a single question to a private consultation. “Bruce and his team have worked tirelessly, with a condensed timeline, providing a safe, warm and inviting environment for some of the most critically ill New York citizens,” says Abbott of the now fully operational dispensary. And the two agree that reception by media, observers, government officials and—most important—patients has been exactly what they hoped it would be. “People walk in and say the same thing: It’s a contemporary environment that welcomes people, with the highest standard of care and education in a medical marijuana industry,” says Teitelbaum. “We’ve raised the bar.”

TOWNHOUSE OF MANY FACES Constructed with modernist panache in 1941, the home of aviation pioneer Sherman Fairchild has had two radically different façades in its lifetime. A third, designed by famed architect Michael Graves, was commissioned but never built.

ike many celebrated Upper East Siders, the townhouse at 17 East 65th Street, which was born in 1941, had some work done on its face as it approached its 40th birthday. But in this case, the enhancements were not just a nip and a tuck but rather major reconstructive surgery, which radically transformed the building’s façade from a boldly horizontal landmark of modernist design to an austere, geometric composition of red granite and stainless-steel piping. The new façade, designed by Milton Klein and completed in 1981, was so lapel-grabbingly noncontextual with its more traditional prewar neighbors that Woody Allen gave the building a cameo in Hannah and Her Sisters as the work of a glib, Jaguar-driving architect played by Sam Waterston. Angling for a date by flattering the architect, a young woman played by Carrie Fisher described the building with an impressive cascade of faux-erudite mumbo jumbo: “It has an organic quality that’s almost entirely wholly interdependent, if you know what I mean. I can’t put it into words. The important thing is, it breathes.” The townhouse, currently listed for sale at $40 million with Brown Harris Stevens, has long been home to French & Company, a pedigreed art dealership with a client roster that has included the Vanderbilts, the Rockefellers, J.P. Morgan, and J. Paul Getty. But the building began its life with a very different appearance and a very different owner, aviation pioneer Sherman M. Fairchild. The only son and heir of George Winthrop Fairchild, the longtime chairman of IBM, Sherman was a restless and ingenious inventor who founded Fairchild Aviation and dozens of other companies, held over 30 patents, and pioneered aerial photography for use from Manhattan to the moon. His groundbreaking products included a silicon semiconductor and a sound camera for home movies. Dissatisfied with conventional design, in architecture no less than in technology, Fairchild tore down a dowdy 1880s row house between Fifth and Madison Avenues and hired architects George Nelson and William Hamby to create a domicile as innovative as its owner. The pair obliged, producing an iconoclastic layout that split the house into two halves overlooking a glass-walled interior courtyard. To connect the front and back sections, the architects provided glassed-in ramps that lent a sense of openness and light unknown in traditional brownstone stairwells.

Because most of the views from these crisscrossing ramps “look out on the house rather than the neighboring buildings,” Architectural Forum noted in 1943, “and because the interiors have been thoroughly sound-conditioned, the sights and sounds of the city seem very remote to the occupant, and the feeling of privacy is virtually complete.” The home’s exterior was equally unconventional, with the main entrance set into a grille of glass and wood spanning the entire façade at street level. On the upper floors, windows were hidden behind horizontal, redwood louvers operated by the same mechanism used to raise and lower convertible car roofs. Fairchild’s house was a highly efficient “machine for living,” but it was also a machine for making more machines, as the industrialist was an inveterate tinkerer who used the gadget-filled building as a workshop and office as well as a home. He was forever developing new ideas for such things as sound and camera equipment, and he regularly dictated letters into tape recorders in different parts of his house, to be typed later by shifts of secretaries at desks in his basement. A jazz aficionado and audio-recording innovator, Fairchild worked his architects “to a frazzle,” in their words, to achieve the effects he wanted, which in the case of the living room meant installing unparallel glass walls that ensured the requisite high-quality acoustics. white Steinway pianos “bolted together like a love seat, as if they were one instrument,” according to jazz historian Paul de Barros. The pianos were miked to a recording booth. Fairchild was a lifelong bachelor who hosted vibrant parties, attracting musical greats like Hoagy Carmichael and movie stars like Jeanne Crain, an Academy Award nominee who played opposite Cary Grant in the 1951 drama People Will Talk. “It would be sort of expected that you would play, so I would get to do duets with Hoagy or whoever was there,” recounted jazz pianist Marian McPartland in Jazzwomen Speak, by Wayne Enstice and Janis Stockhouse. Over the years, the performances of Carmichael, the Rev. Gary Davis and other musicians were recorded in the house with Fairchild’s state-of-the-art equipment, sometimes yielding albums bearing the credit line “recorded at Sherman Fairchild Studio.” In 1969, when McPartland grew frustrated with her lack of recording

After Fairchild’s death in 1971 at the age of 74, his 65th Street townhouse was bought by Martin Zimet, the owner of French & Company and a former Wall Street banker, who moved the art dealership into the building. Toward the end of the decade, the noted architect Michael Graves was commissioned to redesign the façade in a postmodern style, to the dismay of the New York Times architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable, who declared that the building should have been landmarked years earlier as a rare International Style New York townhouse. Architectural historian Paul Goldberger was more sympathetic to Graves’ proposed façade, drawings of which were exhibited at a midtown gallery in 1979. Goldberger, also writing in the Times, described the prospective façade, some versions of which were pale blue with subtle stripings in salmon color, as an admirable mix of “the new with the traditional vocabulary.” He concluded that “one can only hope that this design gets built.”

It didn’t, although the Graves design was considered important enough that the architect Philip Johnson acquired and donated one of Graves’ facade drawings to the Museum of Modern Art. Meanwhile, the front of 17 East 65th Street was aggressively remade according to Klein’s plans, its new red-granite face punctuated with dark windows, some of them reminiscent of a castle’s arrow-slit apertures. Inside, the glass walls of the interior courtyard were removed and its space recaptured as a large, high-ceilinged room capped with an enormous skylight. Today, zigzagging ramps lead visitors from one level to another. There are bedrooms on the third, fourth and fifth floors. What buyer will want to move his family, business, or institution into such a place is the $40 million question. It’s certainly not your ordinary Lenox Hill townhouse, but then again, it was never intended to be. ✦

At 78, Blackwell is slender, fit and elegantly grizzled. He’s wearing an African print shirt and black jeans, and has replaced his ubiquitous flip flops with a black pair of Tod’s driving slippers. Softly spoken but with a residual cut glass English accent, he sits at his carved wood table and drinks strong coffee prepared by the CFO of Island Outpost, Meg Friedman. Bottles of Blackwell’s Fine Jamaican Rum line the shelves behind him, and a large photograph of a beautiful Jamaican woman (who turns out to be Blackwell’s late wife, Mary Vinson) hangs behind him. There is a blueand-white-striped cookie jar with “Ganja” written on the front of it (later before I leave, I ask Blackwell to show me what’s inside. It’s disappointingly empty). Blackwell carries on with his story about the day he met the Wailers. “They wanted to make singles for black American radio. I told them that black radio would not be interested in their music. ‘Look,’ I said, ‘I’m interested in careers, I’m not interested in singles. I think you should be a black rock band.’” Bob said okay and told me how much it would cost to make a record, so I just gave him the money right there.” To understand why Blackwell made the decision he did, you have to look back at the people who shaped his life from an early age. Blackwell was born into top echelons of Jamaica’s elite. His mother’s family, the Lindos, were directly descended from a Sephardic Jewish family who had been imprisoned during the Spanish Inquisition in the 1660s. They fled Spain

ecord producer Chris Blackwell is a man who has always acted on his instincts. And never has that impulse served him so well as the moment he handed over £4,000 in cash to three itinerant Rastafarian musicians and made history. Of course, everyone knows that the three Rastafarians were Bob Marley and the Wailers and that with Blackwell’s money the band would create Catch a Fire, an album of songs that brought reggae music to the world, sold millions of records and eventually helped Blackwell earn £200 million when he sold Island Records to PolyGram in 1989. In the early 1970s in England, giving that kind of money away (about $80,000 today) with no written contract would have been considered a bold move. (Blackwell admits wryly, “People in my office were not thrilled.”) But he didn’t care. “The best thing I ever did really was to give them the money. I felt the only way to get their trust—because they’d been #$@&%* over by everybody— was to trust them.” From the moment the Wailers walked into his office, Blackwell knew they were stars. “They were broke, busted broke, but they walked in like kings. Particularly Bob, because he was their spokesman,” Blackwell says in his terra-cotta-hued apartment on the Upper West Side.

and made their way to London, where their descendants would settle in Kingston. The Lindo family made their living from shipping, coffee plantations, real estate, and as slave agents. They prospered well into the 20th century and eventually turned their interests toward sugar plantations and rum, having bought a distillery in 1916 called J. Wray & Nephew, which distributed Appleton rum. The Lindos were a very prominent family in Kingston. Old photographs in a book on the family lineage, The Lindo Legacy, show pages of beautifully turned-out men, women and children dressed in white Victorian garments. It was a colonial childhood of upper-class comfort and privilege. Blackwell recalls that there were no less than 14 servants around at any one time, including gardeners, cooks and grooms. As an asthmatic only child, Blackwell was often too sick to leave the house, and the servants became his closest friends. “From a very early age, I grew to love them and understand them and sympathize with them,” he says. The person closest to Blackwell was his nanny, Nana Redwood, and she died when he was 18. When I mentioned that it must hurt his mother to know that her son considered himself closest to the nanny, he assures me that is not the case. “No, my mother is a terrific person, a very strong person. She’s more like a dad. And my dad was like my younger brother: he was great and fun and always misbehaving and mischievous, but not in a negative way.”

His father, Joseph, a dashing soldier with a keen interest in opera, whose family made Crosse & Blackwell’s jams and custards, went back to live in Ireland. Blanche Lindo (still alive at 103) was a vivacious, independent, spirited girl who captivated Jamaican and London society in equal measure. Her friendships with Errol Flynn, Noël Coward and Ian Fleming are well-documented. It was rumored that she and Fleming were more than friends, and supposedly he wrote the character of Pussy Galore in Goldfinger with her in mind. With such an unusual childhood, it would have been unlikely that Blackwell would grow into a conventional person, so when conventional stays were put on him, he invariably broke free. He was sent to Harrow, one of the best boarding schools in England, but never graduated. He was caught selling booze and cigarettes to his fellow students and received the school’s first public canning in 130 years. He claims he didn’t hate school, but that the school hated him and that he just didn’t agree with their policies. (“Well, I hated that stupid hat they made us wear,” he says with a smile, referring to the boater hats that are part of the school uniform and which all students, including Winston Churchill, have had to wear.)

By the time Blackwell returned to Jamaica at 17, the family’s fortune was dwindling. In 1945 when Blackwell was 8, his grandfather died and his sons took over the rum business. “They screwed it up by not being savvy enough to run a business. They quarreled together, so the Lindo family, which had been very important in Jamaica, was virtually invisible by the time I was a teenager.” If there was a sense of loss in status, Blackwell says he honestly can’t recall it. “We weren’t a regular family. I don’t remember family gatherings or anything.” After his return to Jamaica, he tried a bunch of odd jobs, including selling air conditioning units (“I hate air conditioning,” he says) and was finally given a job as aide-de-camp to the governor general of Jamaica. He also worked on the first James Bond film, Dr. No, but while these experiences helped to form the future entrepreneur, it was the experience of being shipwrecked and rescued by Rastafarians at 20 that became a pivotal moment in his life. The salient details of what happened that day at Helshire Beach are as follows: Blackwell was stranded on a bit of this island with no roads. Lost and dying of thirst, he happened upon a Rastafarian fisherman, who gave him water. Exhausted, Blackwell fell asleep on the floor of the man’s hut only to wake hours later at night with six other Rastafarians peering at him.

“It was scary for a few minutes,” Blackwell admitted. It would be hard to overestimate the level of fear the Rastafarians inspired in the Jamaican establishment at that time. “They were outcasts,” Blackwell says flatly. “They lived outside the system completely—no one would employ them.” Blackwell soon realized he had nothing to be afraid of. “They were actually reading from the Bible.” The Rastafarians took young Blackwell unharmed back to Port Royal. his was not the only positive experience Blackwell had with the Rastafarians—one of his other jobs was selling scooters and the only person who always paid his bill on time was a Rastafarian. Blackwell had more reasons than most to trust that community, but he still took a major risk backing Bob Marley, who was thought of as difficult to work with—largely because he insisted on being paid royalties for his music. The gamble on Marley paid off in a big way. Reggae music spread like a storm all over the world and Island Records, in the words of Blackwell’s friend and former MTV CEO Tom Freston, became the “the epitome of the great artist-oriented independent record label, a disappearing species.” He signed great artists like U2, Steve Winwood, Cat Stevens, Grace

Jones and many others. Bob Marley and Blackwell remained close until Marley’s unexpected death from skin cancer in 1981. Eventually, Blackwell wanted to move on from the music industry and sold Island Records to PolyGram in 1989. According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to which Blackwell was inducted in 2001, he is “the single person most responsible for turning the world on to reggae music.” Ready for a new challenge, in the mid-90s, he set up Island Outpost, a hotels and resorts company. One of his first ventures, the Marlin Hotel, helped put South Beach in Miami back on the map. His many holdings in Jamaica include Strawberry Hill, Compass Point, The Caves, Jake’s and GoldenEye, which enjoys the cachet of being the spot where Ian Fleming

wrote many of the James Bond novels and Sting composed “Every Breath You Take.” Visited by everyone from Kate Moss to the Clintons, Blackwell has certainly had a hand in securing Jamaica’s reputation as a luxury destination. GoldenEye has undergone some extensive expansion, opening April 1, with 26 new cottages, each with its own private veranda, designed by local Jamaican architect Ann Hodges. Blackwell’s properties all have a barefoot chic vibe to them, and this one will be no different, with custom-designed Jamaican furniture, white linens and African fabrics. It was a project he wanted to start back in 2008 but was prevented from doing so by the world recession, something that now comes as a bit of a relief. “I would have

sland Outpost is committed to helping the local community; native craftsmen and talent are often employed, with wonderful haute bohemian results. Blackwell says he gets his great eye for design from his father, who had an artistic bent, but does not think of himself as hotelier in same way he thinks of himself as a record producer. His friends disagree. Tom admires Blackwell’s versatility: “He has been able to move successfully from one different career to another. And career is probably the wrong word. He follows his instincts and does what he loves and he has done that his entire life. Cool calm and very collected. And connected.” Even though Chris no longer remains as directly involved with the music industry as he once was, his association with Marley remains a constant in his life. Freston remembers a time when the two of them traveled together to the Cape Verde Islands and he was able to talk his way past the immigration guy when he did not have a visa. “Whenever Bob Marley comes into

a conversation, any door opens. Chris is treated like royalty. Another time, in the middle of the Sahara desert, he found a nomad who had a Bob Marley ring tone on his cell phone. He went bananas at that one.” nother fan is his friend, author and Blackwell’s Fine Jamaican Rum cofounder Richard Kirshenbaum, who says, “Chris is like an onion: you have to peel back the layers. His history is so unusual and he has such an innate style. He’s got such great élan, and there is nothing pretentious about him.” The idea of making rum, in keeping with Blackwell’s low-key business style, came out of a casual meeting at GoldenEye with his friend Richard Kirshenbaum in 2009. Kirshenbaum, a renowned advertising executive who had worked on the Hennessy and Dom Pérignon brands, and has a brilliant eye for products, suggested the rum concept to Blackwell.

Blackwell agreed on two conditions: One, the rum needed to be dark, and two, it needed to be made by J. Wray & Nephew. The packaging was designed by Kirshenbaum, but the rum’s blend is very much Blackwell’s own. “It’s a great product: when you taste it you feel like you are on vacation.” It had to be spectacular or Blackwell wouldn’t agree to put his name on it. With his family history, he couldn’t afford to put out rum which was subpar. Only in the market for three years, the product has already gone global. Kirshenbaum calls it, “The little engine that could. We’ve sold over 10,000 cases.” Our interview nearly finished, Blackwell grabs a bottle of rum to take to his next meeting, which just happens to be with another old friend, Doug Morris, the CEO of Sony Music Entertainment. “Doug will enjoy it,” he says with schoolboy enthusiasm.

Before he runs out the door, I ask him what he’d like to see his power and influence achieve. Unsurprisingly, he would like to see his native Jamaica prosper in the long term. As one of the most prominent citizens of Jamaica, Blackwell is well aware of and understandably concerned about the violence that has plagued the island. Politically, he believes the island has reached a turning point. “When that happens people will view Jamaica differently, which is what the place really needs. I really think that Jamaica will go through a boom period. Jamaica is a place to be relaxed. It is an incredible island with incredible soil. It has mountains, it has everything.” If Blackwell’s instinct about Jamaica is as keen as his instinct for musical talent, then there is no doubt that Jamaica and GoldenEye will be the premier hotspots for years to come. ✦

Supermodel Frederique van der Wal is growing into a whole new field by Haley

ost people know Frederique van der Wal for her captivating beauty, which made her a supermodel in the late 1980s and ’90s. But while the world was admiring her on the covers of Cosmopolitan magazine and Victoria’s Secret catalogues, and Azzedine Alaïa was designing with her as his muse, van der Wal had her own source for beauty. “I was born in Holland, and I like to say the seed was planted then,” she says. She’s talking about flowers—a consistent anchor of happiness in her adventuresome and sometimes frenetic supermodel life, and, as of 2008, her trade. When we meet in her New York City industrial-chic office, her cheekbones are as high and chiseled as ever. But, when she begins talking about her passion for flowers and what they mean to her as a Dutch woman, it is hard to believe she ever had a different career. “Wherever you go in Holland, every house, every front walk is beautifully done with flowers. It’s so part of your upbringing there,” says van der Wal. When she came to America, she immediately felt the absence of flowers on the corners of streets and lining walkways. “When you leave a home country or a hometown, there are certain things that you notice only when you leave,” she says. “I think when you leave, you understand even more how much that thing is part of your being,” so coming from Holland, she explains, “I will always have licorice in the house. I will always have flowers in the house.” Van der Wal was born in The Hague in 1967, and never anticipated a career that would take her across the ocean. She studied economics and thought she might run a hotel, but, as the story often goes, at age 18 she was “discovered” and moved to New York City to model. She quickly landed a contract with American Vogue and did her first cover for French Vogue, and her career took off. She loved modeling for all of the excitement and opportunities it provided: namely, traveling the world and collaborating with top creative professionals. But she had always had what she describes as “an entrepreneurial spirit mixed in with creativity,” and, well, as fate would have it her career was skyrocketing at the same time that supermodels were becoming superstars with super marketability. We all know the names, the faces and the empires that they sit atop: Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell . . . Van der Wal was right in there, and lent her name to a number of licensing deals. The most memorable for her was creating a fragrance that she wanted to emulate taking the first inhalation of a bouquet of clean, white flowers. As a world-recognized supermodel and brand name, van der Wal is revered Cover o with pride and joy in her native Holland. I’m going to be in the Dutch Hall of Fame!’ ” They asked her to come to Holland and have a choice in the exact flower they

would devote to her. “I was brought into the greenhouse and met several parents I liked!” she says, through laughter. “It really goes like that—they take the stems and they have ‘sex’ with each other, and you try this one and that one and they combine differently.” Together, they created a white and pink lily that was named Frederique’s Choice. There was an energetic ceremony and celebration in Amsterdam’s KeukenVogue Par is cover, M ay 1989 hof gardens, where the Dutch fashion foundation chose young designers, and van der Wal hired models from Elite who strutted in a garden runway show lined with Frederique’s Choice lilies. The experience of creating Frederique’s Choice was so fascinating for van der Wal that she was inspired to develop, produce and host a television program called The Invisible Journey. It aired on the Discovery Channel and traced the origins of flower centerpieces used at a New York City baby shower from the growing fields in Kenya, through the auctions in the Netherlands and to the wholesalers in New York and onto the tables at the event. The experience and feedback were both positive, and van der Wal had an aha moment. Eponymous to her flower, Frederique’s Choice, the flower delivery and subscription service was born in 2008 in Holland. “It’s a bit of a turned-around story because normally you say, ‘If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere.” But Holland is the flower country—and, by the way, the Dutch are quite critical. So, in this case, it’s “If you can make it in Holland, you can make it anywhere,’ ” says van der Wal. They are thriving in the Neth72 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • AVENUE ON THE BEACH • FEBRUARY 2016

erlands and Germany, so she began offering services to American consumers along the East Coast last year. Van der Wal has a direct hand in selecting the flowers and designing the bouquets. All flowers go direct from growers to the Frederique’s Choice workshops, and then to consumers. They cut out the step of a florist shop, keeping the prices relatively low and the quality of each arrangement within their control. In New York, van der Wal has also collaborated with Anthropologie and Urban Space to bring pop-up shops so people can see, feel and experience the brands. She also recorded a new 10-episode TV series titled HomeGrown Makeover with Frederique and Carter, which began airing in January on A&E’s FYI network and aims to teach people how to integrate flowers and plants into daily life and decor. “In America, people are starting to think more holistically; they’re embracing green juices and yoga, asking ‘How can we make our lives happier and healthier?’ Flowers are proven to be a part of that,” says van der Wal, who certainly puts that principal into practice: Fifteen years ago, she and screenwriter Nicholas Klein bought a 1790s Dutch farmhouse on 19 acres of land in Rhinebeck, New York, when she was pregnant with their daughter, Scyler. That still serves as her weekend retreat, and she gravitates toward the High Line (she notes that Piet Oudolf, the High Line’s garden designer, is Dutch too) when she needs to take in nature during the week. As an entrepreneur van der Wal is practical: she believes in working out kinks and then growing. Once Frederique’s Choice has been operating smoothly in the Maine-to-Virginia region it is in now, she plans to expand, eventually across the United States. “I’ve been the name and face of so many brands, and here you have a such a beautiful product: flowers, and yet there is no brand as we know it—a vision, idea, style. In flowers, we know florists, but we don’t have a way of saying that wherever you are in the world the flowers themselves have a recognized style and quality to them, an overall feel,” says van der Wal of her mission. “I think I found my calling.” ✦ With daughter, Scyler at the European launch of Frederique’s Choice in 2008

And I was just bloody lucky. I was lucky beyond belief. Of course I got fired all the time, during rehearsals or after something had opened. But I was seen, and I got the job. I really don’t know how people today get in to be seen or to be read. Now you can’t get an agent because you must first join a union. But you can’t join unless you get a job, which you can’t do without an agent, it seems. It was all luck. I know many brilliant actors who didn’t become stars. Flashies become stars. Getting the part is very important, too. What I should be congratulated for is picking the material.

Spencer was a brilliant actor, and I learned an awful lot from him. He never overdid it and he had a remarkable memory, remarkable concentration, so that whatever he said, with the utmost simplicity, came off a very firm foundation. I think he and Laurette Taylor were the best actors I’ve ever seen, She had that same gift, and yet life for them was extremely difficult. Living was a problem. Acting was their easy chair.

✰ And Humphrey Bogart Bogey was one of the few truly happy people, I think. Of course, Betty Bacall can tell us for sure. He drank out of merriment, because he liked the taste. The people who had trouble with it drank to escape. He drank too much, but not out of desperation. He was a charming actor, and he won the Oscar for [The African Queen]. He started out playing “mama’s boys” for he was very fine and upright and socially a very correct fellow. And then he degenerated into being a killer, while Spencer started out as a villain and then became a priest!

guess I’m part of the last generation that grew up instilled with a proper code of behavior. I came of age during a period when people “kept house,” so to speak. They don’t do it any longer. They just keep the television in the living room, and it’s just a garbage box, and so if you keep the garbage in the living room it will smell, and you will begin to smell like it.

✰ On Modern Pop Culture It’s downright pathetic. You look at television today, not to mention the theatre, and movies, too, and it’s an empty bore. It’s really so damned sad that we’ve come to this state of affairs. You go to the theatre, and the first act’s about bodily functions, and the second act’s on sex in the puerile style. What’s it come to? I still think that the silent era was the golden age of Hollywood, for they made the most beautiful films, and the stars were lovely, and they had such character and personality. They demonstrated honorable qualities by which to live.

Cross-Market Maneuvers Top Brokers from New York and South Florida Join Forces

AVENUE: A common denominator for our panelists today is that you each represent some of South Florida’s most successful brokerage firms, and at some point you each decided to establish strategic relationships with some of New York’s top firms. So what opportunities are created by an alliance with a brokerage in New York? Let’s start with Beth, who is Florida president for New York–based Compass. BETH BUTLER: Compass was founded in New York, and I think there’s always been a synergy between the New York and Miami markets. Our customers in New York are essentially the same customers whom our Miami agents deal with, and since the customer base is so similar, Miami was the logical choice for our first expansion outside of New York. AVENUE: How about you, Jay? As CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Florida brokerage, do you see any parallels between the New York and South Florida markets? JAY PHILLIP PARKER: There’s a clear nexus between luxury markets like South Florida and New York. South Florida has become much more sophisticated, from arts and culture to healthcare and education to lifestyle, gastronomy and more. New York is pivotal to the success of South Florida. And as we continue attracting more and more wealth from New York, we’re also seeing an increased need here for sophisticated, professional real estate services. It makes perfect sense for Douglas Elliman to have a strong presence in both markets.

AVENUE: Jeff, you’re director of Luxury Sales for Brown Harris Stevens | Zilbert. What is it about an affiliation with a highend brokerage in New York that makes sense to Zilbert?

JEFF MILLER: Many of Brown Harris Ste vens’ clients are looking to relocate and buy second or third homes here in South Florida, specifically Miami Beach, and they want to connect with a brokerage that has deep knowledge of the local market. At Zilbert, we’re seeing the same thing—many of our clients are people coming from New York to buy here, or people from Miami looking to buy there. When Brown Harris Stevens suggested an affiliation between our two companies, we were all for it. It’s an easy way for us to pass our clients back and forth.

AVENUE: And how about you, Edgardo? Over the past 30 years, you’ve built Fortune into a successful firm with a global reach. You could have aligned with any number of New York firms—what made you decide on TOWN Residential? EDGARDO DEFORTUNA: We needed to find the perfect match for Fortune, and talked to a lot of people before deciding on TOWN. We actually started the process in the prior cycle when we thought New York was a strong market for Miami buyers. But the economy changed and as we all know the real estate market is cyclical. New York is always going to be New York, of course, but now it seems Miami is where everybody wants to be, so we had to figure out how to service buyers in both markets. With their market knowledge, luxury experience and best-in-class service, TOWN was clearly the best fit for us.

AVENUE: Daniel, your firm is aligned with Sotheby’s International Realty—a real estate powerhouse not just in New York but around the globe. How do you begin to create a narrative for ONE Sotheby’s here in South Florida as well as in New York?

DANIEL DE LA VEGA: Here in Miami, the dominant markets for luxury buyers have always been Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela, but in the last 18 months we’ve seen a lot of interest from New York buyers. So we’ve really tried to leverage our partnership with the Sotheby’s office there and work as closely with them as we can. Ten years ago, Palm Beach was where New Yorkers wanted to stay and where they wanted to buy. But Miami has changed so much since then and has so much to offer in terms of our lifestyle—especially when it comes to arts, entertainment and dining. This is where New Yorkers want to buy now, and the brokerages are simply following the buyers here.

AVENUE: That’s true—Miami has certainly evolved into an exciting destination with global appeal. Let’s hear from Beth about what’s happening here. It seems every week we’re reading about yet another record-setting transaction—luxury penthouses going for $47 million here, $60 million there. These are numbers that we saw in Manhattan maybe 10 years ago. What’s driving this? BUTLER: There’s always going to be a market for trophy properties, and Miami has always had one or two that attract interest from buyers around the world. I think the market here as a whole has really elevated. There’s been a lot of new construction of more sophisticated, high-end condominiums that appeal to luxury buyers. We’re fortunate that our market is attracting so much of the world’s wealth, and that Compass has been able to tap into that customer base. PARKER: South Florida is a melting pot for ultrahigh-net-worth individuals from all across the world. Unlike what we saw in the last cycle, however, the people who are buy-

Miami is the best place to live in the world, and with prices at $3,000-plus per square foot, luxury residential is considerably more affordable here than it is in New York. I think our prices will continue to rise, and I believe Downtown Miami presents an incredible lifestyle opportunity as it continues to evolve.

We’re definitely becoming more selective in the projects we work on, but those that we do take one we work very hard to sell. Looking forward, I think what we’re seeing is a healthy slowdown and that we’ll see sales continue at a healthy pace. But with new markets emerging such as Mexico and China, we have to shift our sales and marketing efforts accordingly.

AVENUE: There’s a new generation of brokers emerging on the scene, yet the market is getting a bit more challenging and buyers are becoming more and more

AVENUE: Edgardo, you’re not only the head of Fortune, you’re also a developer and a considerable one in your own right. What are some of the challenges you face? DEFORTUNA: As our building designs grow increasingly more sophisticated and complex, finding qualified subcontractors and general contractors capable of delivering the product the way we’ve designed it is a real challenge for us. And because it’s getting harder and harder to find land and keep our price points affordable—especially on the beach—we’re having to shift our sights northward to Hollywood and beyond.

AVENUE: Daniel, since this new cycle began in 2011, more than 300 new developments have been announced in the tricounty area east of I-95. As the luxury market cools off, obviously not all of these will be viable. How do you decide which projects to take on?

VEGA: It’s important to really understand the developer and their vision for the project, and then decide if it’s a good fit for ONE Sotheby’s.

It really wasn’t a profession to speak of. Now, people are graduating from college with the goal of making it their career, and I think it’s really exciting for the industry overall. As Jeff noted, product and market knowledge are important, but with the commitment and the education, that’s something that can be learned fairly quickly—especially if a firm has a structured mentoring program like at Elliman.

MILLER: While more agents can help sell more product, there are a lot of new, underqualified agents getting into the business, and I find myself having to work even harder to get new listings. Old-school brokers have the benefit of experience, though, and can leverage their extensive product and market knowledge to help guide a client in the right direction. At Brown Harris Stevens, we predominantly hire agents with more experience. At the same time, we have senior agents like myself who mentor younger agents and teach them the business. BUTLER: I’m encouraged by how many young professional people are committed to

PARKER: Given the caliber of our clientele and our projects, we’re looking for people who take this profession seriously. We also want people who come from backgrounds that are deep in relationships. Once they’re here, we align them with a team within our organization and allow them to leverage both their team’s and their own individual skills and relationships to help them develop a system that benefits everyone. We mentor our teams and even our top producers—providing them with sophisticated business planning and measuring their success and their failures so they can understand where they need to focus their energies.

AVENUE: Last question for the panel: What were your top international markets last year, and what do you think they’ll be in the year to come?

And real estate in England has gotten so pricey that Brits are really starting to take a serious look at Miami.

DEFORTUNA: It’s a combination, because Miami is almost divided into two distinct markets. Miami Beach is more for second- or third-home buyers, while on the mainland Brickell, Downtown and Edgewater are attracting greater interest from investors. PARKER: And I would add that it’s no longer just Miami—Fort Lauderdale has become a very important market, and I think that this transition will continue because the price points are even more attractive as you go further north.

MILLER: A big percentage of our business is based out of New York, but the international market has always been good to us, and we have buyers from all over. Moving forward, everyone’s talking about the Chinese market. This weekend, in the community where I live, there was a group of 30 Chinese investors who were being shown around. I don’t know which broker was bringing them in or how they got here, but they were snapping photos and checking everything out.

What I think we’ll also be seeing in the next couple of years is the return of Canadians to the market, especially when you get into Palm Beach. We’re seeing a lot more Canadian activity than we have in the last few years. PARKER: Miami has become such a dynamic city. It’s no longer a city of boom and bust but an established and vital place that offers a safe haven for real estate investment from around the globe. Latin America will always be a strong market for us, of course. We’re also seeing a lot of interest from Asia and Canada, and I think Europe is looking more and more to South Florida. We’ve had a lot of Italians and a lot of Spaniards, but I think we’re going to be seeing more Brits, too.

AVENUE: Are they buying in Miami or Miami Beach?

oth the average and median price for all apartments including new development sales and resales reached record levels in the fourth quarter. At $1,944,744, the average price was 10% higher than a year ago. The median price crossed the $1 million mark for the first time, climbing 18% over the past year to $1,150,000. The total number of closings was 12% higher than the fourth quarter of 2014, fueled by a sharp rise in new development closings. Two key events led to these record prices. First, a rise in new development closings, which accounted for 26% of all transactions, compared to 17% a year ago. Remember, the average new development closing is double the average resale closing due to the fact that most new condos are very high end. Second, the increase in new development closings that are almost exclusively condos also brought the condo share of the overall market to 50%, its highest level since the first quarter of 2009. In the fourth quarter of 2014, condos were 44% of total market activity. Condos typically sell for more than co-ops, and therefore push the overall average price higher when they comprise a larger percentage of sales. While the average and median price for resales alone did not set new records, both improved compared to a year ago. The average resale price rose 8% over the past year to $1,528,732, while the median price was 7% higher at $917,075. ✦

I live in Los Angeles, so seeing celebs isn’t an unusual occurrence. I don’t recall seeing anyone in particular while in South Africa, other than the local celebrities: indigenous penguins that live in colony near Boulders Beach.

It’s run by two sisters born and raised in Cape Town who know everything there is about South Africa and have worked with us on all of our trips to Africa. They are budget conscious and know all the new and cool things going on there.

I have tons of fun items from all over, but one item I love is a vase that I bought last year in Barcelona at this amazing store named Jaime Beriestain. It’s a café with a home store attached, and you won’t find any tourists, only locals who are living it up in the city.

While I wasn’t part of the decision to choose Miami, I was “in the room” when they were investigating which American city to choose.
