In 2002, we became a founding member of the Textile Exchange, a non-profit business organization focused on creating environmental and social benefits through the expansion of organic agriculture. Back then, the idea of finding eco and sustainable options for a staggering amount of conventional textiles seemed impossible. But we knew that when we started Aventura Clothing in 2006, we wanted to redefine sustainable clothing and give consumers the option to look good, and feel even better. We started researching sustainable materials, tracking down suppliers and building relationships with other companies who had the same mission: showing the world that sustainable is beautiful. When we first started in 2006, 18% of our clothing was made with organic cotton. Fast forward to today, when 90% of our styles are made up of various low impact or sustainable materials.

Fair Trade is the easiest way to do the most good every day. We know the choices we make as a company affect the Earth and communities around the world. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Fair Trade USA. Fair Trade is a choice to support responsible companies, empower farmers, workers and fishermen, and protect the environment. It’s a world-changing choice. 75% of our Spring / Summer 2021 collection are produced in Fair Trade Certified factories. These factories must adhere to rigorous social, environmental and economic standards to protect the health and safety of the workforce. For every Fair Trade Certified purchase, we pay an additional premium directly back to the workers who make our clothes. They vote on how to spend their fund on projects that address their local needs, from daycare centers to washing machines to bikes for their children! Fair Trade allows businesses and consumers alike to make conscious choices to effect positive change. Fair Trade Certified factories must adhere to standards and requirements to keep factories safe and workers empowered. These standards drive income sustainability, community and individual well-being, empowerment and environmental stewardship. Fair Trade USA works to ensure that Fair Trade Certified goods are produced in safe work conditions, including measures to prevent child labor, forced labor and human trafficking. Working in a Fair Trade Certified facility doesn’t completely shelter workers from challenges—though it does eliminate many of the root causes of difficulties workers face. But it does equip workers to come together, discuss problems, and have the means to invest in solutions. Each time a piece of Fair Trade Certified clothing is sold, workers earn additional money called Community Development Funds.

The business and the family made a move to the beautiful Sierra Nevada in the 1970s, where it took root and continues to blossom and grow to this day. Over 50 years later and we are proud to still be 100% family-owned and operated. We’ve moved on from just tennis shorts and now aim to make a difference in the fashion industry, making conscious business choices, from low impact and sustainable materials to supporting ethical manufacturing in partnership with Fair Trade USA. Carrying on our father’s legacy has been a driving force behind our family business since his death in 1991. While statistics show that only 30 percent of family businesses survive to a second generation, Aventura and the rest of the family of brands are thriving. Our personal commitment and the company’s willingness to adapt and innovate are part of our formula for success.

In the 1960s, we pioneered the development of Espa Twill, a stretch fabric more durable and longer lasting than other fabrics available at the time. An early adopter of innovative materials such as GoreTex and SPF sunprotective fabrics, we also became a private label manufacturer for major retailors, such as Eddie Bauer and L.L. Bean.

MODAL & TENCEL™ MODAL Modal is made from the wood pulp of beech trees. It is soft, drapes and breathes well, and is very absorbent. Tencel™ Modal has an even stricter ecologically friendly production process. Pulp for Tencel™ Modal is produced at the same site as the modal fiber itself - less transportation, means less resources used!
RECYCLED POLYESTER Recycled polyester is made of PET, commonly found in clear plastic water bottles. Recycling this material into fabrics prevents it from going into landfills.

As part of the partnership, Aventura donates new clothing quarterly to this unique boutique that gives women the opportunity to be outfitted to raise self confidence and feel empowered in their daily lives. Uncommon Threads was founded by The Midlife Fashionista blogger, Susan Kanoff, who drew upon her background as a wardrobe stylist and social worker to launch the organization. Women who visit Kanoff’s boutique have been referred by a social worker, doctor, church, social service organization or a therapist. For a $10 donation (waived if the woman cannot afford it), Uncommon Threads offers these women everyday clothing that makes them feel beautiful and raises their self-esteem.
