A Rum Renaissance in Key West Enter the World of Hemingway Rum Company

Captain Shawn Martin was intimately familiar with the waters—both fresh and salted—of the Florida Keys well before he started making rum from them. Martin, a marine biologist, Coast Guard veteran and diving instructor, began toying with home distilling at his home in Key West when not taking customers onto the Gulf of Mexico.

“It all started as a hobby, and somehow it has turned into a career,” said Martin, now the rum maker and distillery manager at the Hemingway Rum Company in Key West. “The idea of ever getting to be a distiller was never something I thought possible or entertained.”

The Hemingway Rum Company opened its renovated Key West tasting room in 2017, not far from the Spanish Colonial home where “Papa” Ernest Hemingway penned some of his greatest novels—all the while surrounded by his ubiquitous six-toed cats.

Martin and his fellow distillers were actually contacted by Hemingway’s descendents at the beginning stages, leading to an eventual collaboration. The fact that the distillery’s managing director, James Kempland, had previously sold the Angel’s Envy bourbon brand into the Bacardi portfolio gave the Hemingway family assurances that the budding Key West enterprise was in fact the real deal.

“The Hemingway family approached us and basically said ‘We hear you are thinking of creating a rum in Key West and we want in,” Martin said, thus leading to the birth of the Hemingway Rum Company.

Ernest Hemingway was famous for his 90-mile voyages from Florida to Cuba aboard his vessel, the Pilar. On the island nation he would fish, winter at his home at Finca Vigia, write and, frequently, drink prodigiously. It is said that some of the Cuban fishermen he met there inspired “The Old Man and the Sea.” (Tours of “Hemingway’s Havana” are now popular in Cuba.)

Today, the Hemingway Rum Company retails various rums under the label “Papa’s Pilar,” named for the vessel and her captain.

"Ernest was the type of man whose passions ran strong, and he was passionate about rum—the drink of pirates, scoundrels, scholars, and adventurers. He was never shy about his taste for the spirit, and no analysis of his life is complete without a mention,” Patrick Hemingway, the writer’s great-grandson, said in a statement provided via email. “The family very enthusiastically supports the mission of Papa’s Pilar to produce the kind of rum that Ernest would love.”

These include the 84-proof blonde rum blended in bourbon barrels and Spanish sherry casks, as well as the 86-proof dark rum blended in port wine, sherry and bourbon casks. The bottles for both are in the shape of a canteen, in honor of Hemingway’s service in an Italian ambulance corps during the First World War. (This period would form the basis of his novel, “A Farewell to Arms.”) The bottle screw tops —which hang from a small chain, much like the top of a real army canteen of the 1910s—are also emblazoned with the image of a compass, in tribute to Hemingway’s love of the seas.

“In Key West we have our craft distillers license [so] whatever is created in Key West must be bottled, must be sold in Key West and directly to the consumer,” Martin said. This means that even distribution to restaurants and bars on the island itself must be handled by the distiller’s facility on the Florida mainland.

Walking through the company’s facility is to get a quick history of a half-millennium of Caribbean rum making, but also through Ernest Hemingway’s life. Photos of the young and not-so-young author grace the walls from his time in World War I and up through his many fishing expeditions near here.

Hemingway smiles in almost any photograph with a netted fish, belying the lifelong depression beneath that led to him taking his own life in Ketchum, Idaho, on July 2, 1961.

A rather spirited tour guide named Kirk—nicknamed “Captain” for the Enterprise skipper—vacillated between anecdotes from the distillery’s namesake and rather raucous denunciations of what precisely is meant by “spiced” rum. Kirk said that other rum distillers—he hesitates to name them, but the implications are clear—aren’t required to inform consumers what precisely are the so-called spices they infuse in their rums. It could, in theory, be anything, but whatever it is, it’s almost certainly artificial.

Papa’s Pilar, then, has plans for its own spiced rum, but Martin insists the flavors will be natural.

For many this is a stressful thought that is becoming more and more prevalent as Covid 19 cases continue to be diagnosed this season. With health officials warning Americans about the combined threats this year, I want to share the same advice I would give to my patients, to better prepare their body to deal with a daunting winter forecast.

GO GREEN: When your mom told you to eat your vegetables, she really knew what she was talking about. Eating green and colorful vegetables adds various much-needed nutrients to your diet. Fiber in vegetables keeps your digestive system and your microbiome (good bacteria) healthy and as we have 80% of our immune system in our gut, what we eat directly correlates with our ability to fight off infections.

H2O FLOW: Did you know that your body is composed of 60% water? Dehydration causes reduction in overall volume of blood and lymphatic fluids that are so important for a healthy immune response. Dehydration and inflammation are the most common culprits to chronic immune system impairment. Water doesn’t have to be boring and flavorless, throw some orange or lemon slices, or cut up berries into a big jug of water and keep in the fridge overnight. The fruit essence will give a delicious and refreshing flavor and have you drinking more of it.

That being said, choose a smarter substitution when it comes to alcoholic beverages. Those dehydrate you and make your body work overtime which increases your inflammation. If everyone around you is enjoying cocktails, get some sparling water with a few slices of lime or pieces of strawberries and enjoy it out of a pretty cocktail glass.

MOVE IT! During the winter months and holidays, one of the first things to go is usually exercise. Moving our body is super important to keep our immune system well. If walking outside or swimming is not an option, one of my favorite tools is a mini trampoline or a rebounder.

Putting on some fun music and lightly jumping or just moving your feet up and down helps move the lymph and cleanse and detox our system. Plus the endorphins feel oh so good!

MEDITATE (the easy way!): We live in stressful and uncertain times, and no part of the world seems to be exempt. Stress is inevitable. We cannot control a lot of things that happen around us. Stress is one of the most damaging things to our body and our immune system. When we are stressed out, our immune system takes a hit and it’s ability to fight off antigens is lowered. That’s why we become more susceptible to infections. As we cannot control things in the outside world most of the time, we need to focus on controlling our internal world, our thought processes and our reaction to stressful situations.

A,B,C,D,E,F, G…Fundamental Vitamin Intake: Vitamin C is a great example of a vitamin involved in many parts of our immune system.

Vitamin C helps the production of white blood cells known as lymphocytes and phagocytes, it helps our body fight infections. Vitamin C is also a very powerful antioxidant, which means it helps protect the body from the harmful effects of free radicals. Being deficient in vitamin C has been linked to poor health outcomes for example with people who had pneumonia. Unfortunately in our current world, the quality of our food still lacks vital nutrients we need everyday. Even when you are meaning well and eating a well-rounded diet you are still bound to have a deficiency or two. I constantly see it in my patients. It’s very rare to have someone not deficient in anything. I usually suggest starting with a few fundamentals, like Vitamin C, Vitamin D, zinc, multivitamins, omega 3’s, and probiotics daily.

SLEEP IN : Find ways to get to sleep and stay asleep! (nutrition, herbs, stress and inflammation control) Our body needs to regenerate regularly to build up our immune system, and grow new cells while getting rid of the old . We accomplish this by getting a good deep rest.

Sleep is an essential part of our lifecycle and must be regulated in order to gain optimum results. Making sure you have a daily routine that accounts for your individual sleep needs as well as making sure to eat foods that are not inflammatory goes a long way.

SUGAR=SICK: Find healthier substitutions, decrease simple carbs and even fruit with high glycemic index. (skip halloween candy!) Stick with berries and healthier sugar substitutes such as organic stevia. Yes, it’s extremely difficult to withstand the delicious aroma of freshly baked goods that are served at holiday dinners. You can try making or buying and bringing your own desserts. Sugar feeds yeast and “bad” bacteria in our gut which in turn increases inflammation, food sensitivities and decreases our immune system function. CONNECT: Stay socially connected (while isolating). We are not just a sum of body parts, we are whole and complete human beings. Our physical health is very closely correlated with all other areas of our lives. We are social creatures and being in isolation for very long periods of time is very taxing for our emotional state and thus causes stress and disturbance to our physical body. If you have to stay isolated physically, brainstorm some ways to connect emotionally in a fun way.

Have digital movie night, where you watch the same movie at the same time as your friend and discuss it over the phone as it happens. Play charades or other fun games over zoom. Have a meetup with your closest friends somewhere in nature where you sit at a comfortable distance from each other but still enjoy each other’s companionship.

CANNACURIOUS? Support your endocannabinoid system. As research done by Israeli scientist Raphael Mechoulam showed, we all have endocannabinoid receptors in most of our organ systems. Those receptors have immune modulating properties as well as anti-inflammatory effects on our body. CBD, which is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis or hemp has been shown to have incredible effects on our body. Anything from reducing our response to stress, to improving our sleep and decreasing pain and inflammation, some of my patients use it as an integral part of their wellness protocol and see quicker recovery times, improved overall wellbeing and decrease in flare ups of their chronic issues. Stress and lack of sleep has a significant negative impact on our immune system function. More research is still needed on the cannabinoid therapy and it’s effect on Covid -19 and Flu viruses.

One of the things I do with my clients and patients is work on establishing easy to follow, daily habits that could be incorporated into a long term lifestyle. Short term extreme habit changes just don’t work. If I tell you to start eating completely differently tomorrow you might be able to do it for a few days or a few weeks based on pure willpower, but then you are most likely to slide into your old automatic habits. It’s by establishing new habits, systems and routines that we can guarantee success with our lifestyle changes. Finding healthier substitutions as opposed to completely eliminating things you love, is the way to create a lifestyle change that will truly be there for a lifetime!

Between 1995 and the March 2000 top of the dot.com bubble, Nasdaq rose +400% then dropped -78% from its peak by October 2002, September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks & wars in Iraq and Afghanistan). Democrat Jimmy Carter had distinctly different market totals between the Dow (virtually even)and S&P. Republican Donald Trump through worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.

Yes, unemployment is high, but coming down. Virus infections have been spiking recently, but deaths have not- because younger, stronger people being infected are able to fight it off better than older people were in the beginning. And because of all that has been learned over the months of the virus.The economy will continue to open up. Look to energy companies; refiners and midstream companies, to benefit.

President Trump would most probably continue programs regarding energy. New taxes or regulations on fossil fuels are not a Trump goal, rather Trump would be friendly to fossil fuel production & possibly deregulate more. Military spending would keep growing under a 2nd Trump administration, making defense contractors a buy. Even with this being the first president in decades to not have America in a new war, Trump believes in a strong military for defense.

A Joe Biden win would be a different set of priorities, especially if Democrats are able to control the House and the Senate. A lot of changes proposed. A lot more to speculate on with a Biden win. The concern is not that a Democrat President means a down market. The posted stats show it obviously does not. BUT there could be an initial 2-4% market drop off in the first 100 days as government interests rotate out of fossil fuels, banking, defense. Infrastructure, clean energy and health-care services companies would be poised to do well.

Pharmaceutical companies and FAANG stocks (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Alphabet) could dip. A Biden administration would take a tougher stance on antitrust grounds, so techs that have done so well like Amazon, Facebook & Apple would be ones to consider moving away from, at least at the beginning of the administration.

Two Things to Consider:

-First, no matter which person is the next President; do not panic sell! I can not say that strong enough. A perfect example is the hard drop after Tuesday September 11, 2001. Markets stayed closed until the following Monday September 17, 2001. When the markets opened, so many sold on the drops & lost vast amounts. But, by November 7, 2001 the Dow returned to before 9/11 numbers. The S&P was faster; it took one month to the day, October 11, 2001, to be back to the before 9/11 number.

- Second, if Biden wins it would be beneficial to take capital gains in 2020 before the end of the year at lower tax rates.

November Notable of the Month - Dr. Anya Temer Q.) How did you get started in the medical business?

A.) After going through a strenuous and intense physician training I graduated as a medical doctor. While I was in residency I saw that unfortunately as amazing as our western medicine advances are, a lot of people with chronic illness keep coming back with the same or worse issues time and time again. They were not getting truly healthy, they were not recovering, their symptoms were merely managed and no one looked for the root cause of the issue or asked why the health issue happened in the first place, what were the deeper more underlying reasons for a health condition.

I started educating myself in complimentary, holistic healing modalities as well as mind/body connection and health coaching.

Q.) Did you have any role models, peers, or celebrity influences that motivated you along the way?

A.) One of my role models is Dr. Andrew Weil. I studied with him in Arizona while in medical school and that inspired me to seek out educational resources that were outside of the box of regular western medicine.
