OVERVIEW & TREATMENT RATIONALE URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI) RECOMMENDED TREATMENT: Initial Dosing For dogs: 1 chewable tablet per 20 kg twice a day for up to 30 days.* For cats: ¼ chewable tablet per 5 kg twice a day for for up to 30 days.* Chronic or Recurrent 1 chewable tablet per 20 kg once a day for a minimum of 10 consecutive days per month.*

Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecium and Staphylococcus spp. are the most prevalent bacterial species causing UTIs in both dogs and cats.8,9 These bacteria bind to specific receptors on the urothelium and is the first step of the infection.

Bacteria then attach to each other and become embedded within a matrix called biofilm, which further recruit other bacterial species such as Proteus spp.8,9 The biofilm protects the bacteria that are the closest to the urothelium against antibiotics. It is a form of resistance which can be responsible for UTI relapses.

The urothelium is naturally coated by a layer of glycosaminoglycans, ensuring a certain degree of protection against bacterial adhesion.

FELINE IDIOPATHIC CYSTITIS (FIC) RECOMMENDED TREATMENT: FIC ¼ chewable tablet per 5 kg twice a day for up to 30 days.

Then once a day for minimum of 10 consecutive days per month.*

FIC is a consequence of the stimulation of sensory nerves at submucosal level of the bladder, leading to acute inflammation and pain for the patient.

Stress can be a triggering factor for FIC10. Another cause of FIC is the loss of glycosaminoglycans in the bladder mucosa, which naturally occurs as cats age.

As of 5 years of age, cats start to have lower than normal (5 mg/l) urinary concentration of GAGs11. This suggests a thinning of the GAGs layer, which results in alterations of the urothelium. These alterations lead to increased permeability allowing for the passage of irritating components of the urine, which results in inflammation of the sensory nerves.
