At Christys’ London, craft is key. Since its founding in 1773, Miller Christy’s passion for impeccable quality and skilled craftsmanship has passed through generations of hat makers, safeguarding Christys red and gold insignia as a symbol synonymous with fine traditionally crafted hats.
For Christys’ Spring Summer 2024 collection, in addition to our famous Christys’ staples, this season debuts a fresh take on our Christys’ classics to bring you a collection of timeless staple pieces. We are proud to introduce our new cap collection, Made in England, made in our own factory in Witney Oxfordshire, using the finest woven cloth from some of Great Britain’s makers.
Embracing the very best of Christys’ heritage and traditional hat making skills, we are constantly developing its collection to make it relevant for today’s market. Whilst methods have remained largely unchanged and heritage is paramount, it is the capacity to transcend trends and social borders that makes Christys’ hats as sought after as ever.
Above all else, it is Christys’ traditional hat making skills that makes a Christys’ hat a much coveted accessory with its timeless styles, that provide a winning combination.
HISTORY & HERITAGE
Christy & Co Ltd has been manufacturing fine hats in England since 1773. Christys’ was founded by Miller Christy in Stockport, Cheshire. Many of the first tenders for the headwear of Britain’s new police forces were worn by Christys. By 1843 Christys’ was the largest hat and cap making factory in the world. Prince Albert wore a Christys’ top hat and popularised the style as an everyday essential for the British Gentleman. At its height, in 1914, the Stockport factory alone employed 3,000 local people and was always managed by direct descendants of the company’s founder.
FACTORY & CRAFTMANSHIP
Today, we still produce our hats using traditional methods at our factory in Oxfordshire, England.
The journey is such that our craftsmen and women train for many years to develop their hatting skills, and Christys’ pride themselves on the unique craftsmanship still applied to their hat making.
SUMMER CLASSICS
Despite their name, Panama hats have never been made in Panama, they originate from Ecuador where they have been woven since the mid 1600s.
Christys’ produces its Panama hat hoods in Ecuador using traditional weaving to craft a rough coned shape. They are then shaped, blocked by hand and finished with a band and bow, in our own factory in Oxfordshire, England to the highest traditional standards.

HIGH GRADE PANAMAS
Our High Grade Panamas are Grade 16, our highest grade weave.
The hood, from which a Panama hat is made, is woven entirely by hand from the unique Toquilla palm. The fineness of the weave defines the value of the hat, as every time the width of the straw is reduced by half,the amount of work required to weave it is multiplied by four.

FORMAL HATS
It was Prince Albert who, in 1850, truly established the style in the British wardrobe. Indeed one of Christys’ ‘Prince Albert’ toppers is on display at the Victoria & Albert museum... and through this royal endorsement, the top hat became the conventional headwear of British gentleman. Now the purist of traditional occasion and formal headwear.

HISTOIRE
Fondée en 1838 au pied des Pyrénées françaises par Lucien Laulhère, la Maison Laulhère a commencé à confectionner des bérets en 1840.
Nous n’avons jamais cessé depuis de fabriquer cet objet mythique qu’est le béret, produit d’un héritage ancestral singulier et d’un savoir-faire unique qui n’est plus détenu aujourd’hui que par une poignée de passionnés.
Notre ambition est de continuer inlassablement à moderniser le béret et à le porter sur le devant de la scène, année après année, tout en perpétuant l’héritage inestimable dont nous sommes aujourd’hui l’un des derniers gardiens.
SAVOIR-FAIRE
Pour élaborer un béret, il faut associer des matières de première qualité, rigoureusement sélectionnées, des hommes et des femmes rompus à l’art du tricot, du foulonnage et du feutrage, de la teinture et des couleurs, de l’ennoblissement et de bien d’autres opérations bien spécifiques à la fabrication d’un béret Laulhère.
FABRICATION
Les produits sont tricotés et feutrés à partir de la laine brute, naturellement de couleur écrue, puis teintés à l’aide de mélanges de pigments basés sur des recettes mises au point au cours des années par la maison. Le procédé demande beaucoup de doigté pour que la teinture prenne uniformément mais il permet d’obtenir des couleurs d’une profondeur et d’un éclat à nul autre pareil.
La confection d’un béret nécessite deux journées entières de travail, parfois plus, et une multitude de vérifications et d’ajustements qui font de chaque article une pièce unique.
La maîtrise de la matière, des procédés de fabrication et des opérations de façonnage associés au béret et à la chapellerie fait de Laulhère un partenaire reconnu pour la réalisation à façon de coiffes par les grands noms de la mode. Depuis les années 70, la maison propose de la confection à façon et a signé des collaborations avec les plus grands noms de la mode française. Nous réalisons études et prototypes sur la base d’un cahier des charges, d’un dessin, d’une idée en mettant à la disposition des professionnels de la mode tout le savoir-faire artisanal qui fait notre fierté.
La coiffe est ensuite enformée, grattée puis rasée afin d’obtenir un velouté parfait avant de passer à l’atelier de la confection. A chacune de ces étapes, un contrôle visuel permet d’écarter les exemplaires non conformes aux standards de qualité élevés de la maison Laulhère.

Sylvie a commencé comme apprentie à 16 ans et demi avec un CAP Habillement Fabrication Industrielle. Après plusieurs années chez Ets BEIGHAU, autre usine emblématique rachetée par Laulhère lors de ses difficultés, elle a rejoint Laulhère, où elle travaille depuis 24 ans avec une dévotion sans faille. Son engagement et son expertise sont aujourd’hui des piliers de l’entreprise, et elle espère y terminer sa carrière. Son histoire symbolise la continuité et la fidélité à l’artisanat. Chez Laulhère, chaque béret est bien plus qu’un simple produit ; c’est un héritage vivant, fabriqué avec fierté par des artisans passionnés, génération après génération. C’est cette transmission, ce lien indéfectible entre passé et présent, qui forge la force et l’originalité de Laulhère.

C’est avec une certaine émotion que je me permets de vous partager le fruit de notre dernière collaboration : le béret
Laulhère x Dior. Cette collaboration me rend particulièrement fière car il permet de nous arrêter un court instant pour souligner l’engagement à conserver l’artisanat français tout en adaptant nos inspirations et nos techniques.
Un grand merci à toutes les personnes qui travaillent avec moi depuis 10 ans, dont le travail acharné et la passion ont rendu cela possible. Choisir de produire exclusivement en France montre notre dévouement à la qualité et à la préservation de
l’emploi local, même si cela représente un défi dans notre économie globale. Je suis d’autant plus heureuse que je partage de nombreuses valeurs avec Maria Grazia Chiuri, notamment la passion pour l’égalité et l’amour pour les savoir-faire d’exception. Son approche moderne enrichit à chaque collection notre tradition.
Stephen Jones, cet homme aux qualités humaines extraordinaires, reconnu pour son amour des bérets et son incroyable savoirfaire, racontait sa vision du béret : «Maria Grazia Chiuri aime créer des pièces universelles que chacun puisse porter en différentes circonstances.
