Als Karin Schulte 1999 die Inhalte für das erste Messedesign Jahrbuch aufbereitete, widmete sie sich rückblickend drei Jahren Messebaukultur im deutschsprachigen Raum. Sie untersuchte neben dem infrastrukturellen Funktionieren der jeweiligen Auftritte unter anderem ihre technische Eindeutigkeit, die Materialwahl, Farbund Beleuchtungskonzepte, die Präsentation der Exponate und natürlich die übergeordnete Entwurfsidee. Im Jahr 2000 ergänzte der Londoner Journalist Conway Lloyd Morgan (1948–2011) den internationalen Blick auf die Branche und zeigte auf, wie umfassend die Bedeutung von Messedesign im gesamten Bereich der Ausstellungsgestaltung geworden ist. Die beiden Autoren legten damit den Grundstein für die im jährlichen Wechsel erscheinende Publikation.

Seit 2012 widmen wir uns nun den Strömungen im Messedesign und möchten Ihnen die herausragendsten, innovativsten und relevantesten Messestände des jeweils vergangenen Jahres in diesem Buch präsentieren. Auch wir hatten dabei Auswahlkriterien und können die Punkte von Karin Schulte noch um die grafische Umsetzung der Leitidee, den gekonnten Einsatz von (audiovisuellen) Medien, gelungene Besucherpartizipation, Einbindung von Events und natürlich die Frage der Nachhaltigkeit ergänzen.

Zudem befassen wir uns explizit mit einzelnen Branchen und versuchen, die Messeauftritte somit vergleichbar zu machen – schließlich ist es ein enormer Unterschied, wenn wir über einen Stand im Automobilbereich, in der Lifestyle- beziehungsweise Möbelbranche oder, so wie dieses Jahr erstmals, über die Sonderflächen innerhalb der Messehallen berichten: Hier spielt nicht nur die Finanzierbarkeit, sondern, unserer Ansicht nach, vor allem die Idee und die Geschichte dazu eine große Rolle.

In den letzten 15 Jahren hat sich also sehr viel getan: Das Messedesign Jahrbuch hat sich zu einem „Standardwerk der Messeszene“ (Out of Home 01/2012) entwickelt und bietet „Inspiration und Anregung für alle, die mit Messebau zu tun haben – und deren Kunden“ (LARGE FORMAT, April 2013).

When Karin Schulte put together the content for the first Trade Fair Design Annual back in 1999, she looked back at three years of trade fair stand construction in German-speaking countries. Besides exploring the way the infrastructure of the various exhibits worked, she considered their technical clarity, the choice of materials, colour and lighting concepts, the presentation of the exhibits and of course the overarching design idea. In 2000, the London-based journalist Conway Lloyd Morgan (1948–2011) took an international look at the industry and showed just how important trade fair design had become as a sub-area of exhibition design. The two authors thus laid the foundation for the publication, thereafter taking it in turns to produce it.

We took over in 2012 and since then we have devoted ourselves to the trends in trade fair design. In this book, we once again want to present the most outstanding, the most innovative and most relevant trade fair stands of the past two years. We too had a list of selection criteria. In addition to those of Karin Schulte these included the graphic realisation of the main idea, the skilled use of (audiovisual) media, successful visitor participation, the incorporation of events and, of course, the question of sustainability. By explicitly focusing on certain industries, we also tried to make the trade fair stands comparable – after all, it makes a huge difference whether we report about a stand from the automotive industry, or from the lifestyle or furniture sector. And this year for the first time, we also reported on special areas within the trade fair halls, again a special case. Here not only the financial viability plays a role, but in our opinion above all the idea and the story that goes with it.

A lot has happened in the last 15 years: The Trade Fair Design Annual has evolved into a “standard reference work in the trade fair community“ (Out of Home 01/2012) and offers “inspiration and stimulation for all those involved in trade fair construction – and their customers“ (LARGE FORMAT, April 2013).

Green plants and connectors made to look like young shoots as well as profiles from the various systems created a relaxing atmosphere in which visitors could leaf through the recently published book by Burkhardt Leitner.

System architecture normally only puts in an appearance in the background. At the EuroShop 2014, Burkhardt Leitner constructiv took centre stage for a change: in numerous application examples, Ippolito Fleitz Group made the various profile and framework systems the main players of the 182 m² booth. By covering the wall surfaces with transparent gauzes, things became visible which are normally concealed behind the surface: the innovative new clip-in profiles were used to entirely clad the “pila petite” framework.

While the Stuttgart-based specialists for temporary architecture for trade fairs, offices, public space and museums have succeeded with their new products in making the underlying technical structure less and less visible, the designers from the interdisciplinary design studio, also from Stuttgart, found many different ways to make them visible again. The Exhibitor Magazine awarded the stand “Best of Show (Medium Booth)“ prize.

Systemarchitektur bekommt ihren Auftritt normalerweise nur im Hintergrund. Nicht so bei Burkhardt Leitner constructiv auf der EuroShop 2014: In zahlreichen Anwendungsbeispielen inszenierte die Ippolito Fleitz Group verschiedene Profil- und Tragwerksysteme als Hauptakteure des 182 Quadratmeter großen Messestands. Durch die Verwendung transparenter Gazen als Bespannungsmaterial für die Wandflächen wurde zudem sichtbar, was normalerweise hinter der Oberfläche verborgen bleibt: zum Beispiel neuartige Aufclip-Profile, die ihrerseits das Tragwerksystem „pila petite“ vollständig verkleideten.

Während die Stuttgarter Spezialisten für temporäre Bauten in den Bereichen Messe, Office, öffentlicher Raum und Museum mit ihren neuen Produkten den technischen Aufbau immer weiter unsichtbar werden ließen, machten die Gestalter des interdisziplinären Designstudios aus Stuttgart sie auf vielfältige Weise wieder sichtbar. Dafür wurde der Stand mit dem vom Exhibitor Magazine ausgelobten Preis „Best of Show (Medium Booth)“ ausgezeichnet.

Combined into a collage with architectural elements in the colours black, red and white, the statics of this “Objet trouvé“ was guaranteed and the whole arrangement was at the same given a uniform design idiom.

Shop fitter Knoblauch and system supplier Shop Systems shared a joint stand at the Euroshop 2014 in Düsseldorf that felt like an architectural readymade. Amidst an abstract forest of panels, there stood a weather-beaten wooden hut that had been translocated from the hinterland of Lake Constance.

Set off almost like in a museum in a suggested blackbox by means of specially produced light choreography, the hut was meant to be testimony and promise in one: “We seek out, discover and understand the message and ideology of your product or your brand and design and build these.”

This is how the shop specialists themselves formulated the target message of their 160 m² exhibition space, true to the slogan “100% genuine”. As around 60% of Shop Systems solutions are custom made, the search for authentic concepts and undistorted brand messages is the shared goal of the two companies from Markdorf near Lake Constance.

Wie ein architektonisches Readymade nahm sich der Stand aus, mit dem sich das Ladenbauunternehmen Knoblauch und der Systemlieferant Shop Systems gemeinsam auf der EuroShop 2014 in Düsseldorf präsentierten. Inmitten eines abstrahierten Stelen-Walds war ein verwitterter Holzschuppen platziert, der aus dem Hinterland des Bodensees transloziert wurde.

Mit eigener Lichtchoreografie, beinahe museal in einer angedeuteten Blackbox in Szene gesetzt, sollte die Hütte Zeugnis und Versprechen zugleich sein: „Wir suchen, entdecken und verstehen die Botschaft und Ideologie Ihres Produkts oder Ihrer Marke und setzen diese gestalterisch und handwerklich um.“ So formulierten die LadenSpezialisten selbst die Zielbotschaft ihrer 160 Quadratmeter großen Ausstellungsfläche unter dem Motto „100% Echt“. Da Shop Systems rund 60 Prozent kundenspezifische Sonderlösungen fertigt, ist die Suche nach authentischen Konzepten und unverfälschten Markenbotschaften das gemeinsame Ziel der Markdorfer vom Bodensee.

The stand of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar towered 6.20 metres above the hustle and bustle of the fair. Easy to recognize, the trade fair stand was a helpful landmark for visitors.

The trade fair stand of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar was easy to find amidst the hustle and bustle of the 2014 Leipzig Book Fair: the over six-metre high structure built by students from 360 folding cardboard boxes towered above the surrounding trade fair presentations. The spot was literally turned on the books and typographical treasures conveniently on display at eye level – thanks to self-constructed lamps equipped with high-power LEDs. The structure, that had been developed the year before, as well as the just under 50 m 2 booth were the result of a cross-disciplinary collaboration: 25 students from courses of study in four different faculties – architecture and urbanism, civil engineering, art and design as well as media – were involved in the project. Through the exhibit, the Book Fair team from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar was once again able to demonstrate the aesthetic and design power of a seemingly unimpressive material – cardboard.

Der Messestand der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar war im Getümmel der Leipziger Buchmesse 2014 leicht zu finden: Hoch ragte die Konstruktion aus den umgebenden Messepräsentationen heraus.

360 faltbare Pappwürfel stapelten die Studierenden mehr als sechs Meter hoch. Die ausgestellten Bücher und typografischen Liebhaberstücke wurden dabei in lesefreundlicher Höhe ins rechte Licht gerückt – dafür sorgten selbst gefertigte, mit HighPower-LEDs betriebene, Leuchten.

Die Konstruktion, die bereits letztes Jahr entwickelt wurde, sowie der knapp 50 Quadratmeter große Messeauftritt waren das Ergebnis einer fächerübergreifenden Zusammenarbeit: 25 Studierende aus den Studiengängen der vier Fakultäten – Architektur und Urbanistik, Bauingenieurwesen, Gestaltung sowie Medien – waren daran beteiligt.

Durch den Auftritt konnte das Buchmesse-Team der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar einmal mehr die ästhetische und konstruktive Kraft des vermeintlich unscheinbaren Materials Pappe unter Beweis stellen.

Das Haus ist nach dem eigenen Körper – der inneren Hülle unserer Existenz – die privateste Sphäre des Menschen (franz. intérieur: das Innere).

Hier möchten wir ganz wir selbst sein, uns zugleich entfalten sowie geborgen fühlen. Kein Wunder also, dass wir uns auf besondere Weise mit den Räumen identifizieren, in denen wir wohnen.

Scheinbare Funktionsstücke wie Möbel oder Wasserhähne bekommen aus diesem Blickwinkel eine andere Bedeutung. So gelingt es einigen Gestaltern von Messeständen, den Innenraum auch als poetisches Experimentierfeld im alltäglichen Einerlei zu reflektieren.

The house is our most private sphere, second only to our own bodies, the inner shell of our existence. At home, we want to be ourselves, to develop freely and at the same time feel secure. It is therefore not surprising that we identify with the space in which we live in a very special way.

Seen from this perspective, seemingly functional items such as furniture or taps acquire another significance. Some designers of trade fair stands succeed in reflecting on the interior space as a poetic experimental ground in the humdrum of everyday life.

The passion with which OLIGO Lichttechnik GmbH has devoted itself to light and lamps was the main theme and message of the trade fair exhibit. The designers aimed to achieve “a symbiosis of functionality, timeless design combined with an attention to detail which is reflected in all the products”.

Passion, freshness, zeitgeist and the vitality of the brand – conveying all that spatially was the task with which Bachmann-Kern & Partner was entrusted. The Solingen based office for architecture and brand communication developed the trade fair exhibit of the lighting manufacturing OLIGO Lichttechnik GmbH for the Light+Building 2014 under the slogan “feel the light“. The stand with a footprint of 247 m² had openings on three sides and presented not only the company but above all individual products.

Eight cube-like sections, partly nested in one another at an angle, were used to structure the stand that, on the outside, was plain black. On the inside, by contrast, every single lamp became a protagonist in its own show. What the visitor therefore saw was a system of tracks strung like a network across the room, brightly coloured backdrops of splashes of paint on ceiling, walls and floor or more subtly designed areas for lights whose application possibilities speak for themselves.

Leidenschaft, Frische, Zeitgeist und die Lebendigkeit der Marke – dies alles räumlich zu vermitteln, war die Aufgabe von Bachmann.Kern & Partner. Unter dem Motto „feel the light“ entwickelte das Solinger Büro für Architektur und Markenkommunikation den Messeauftritt des Leuchtenherstellers OLIGO Lichttechnik GmbH für die Light+Building 2014 als dreiseitig geöffneten Stand mit 247 Quadratmetern Fläche und präsentierte dabei nicht nur das Unternehmen, sondern vor allem einzelne Produkte.

Strukturiert durch acht angedeutete Kuben, die ineinander verschränkt und zueinander verdreht positioniert wurden, war der Messestand von außen in schlichtem Schwarz gehalten. Im Inneren dagegen wurde jede einzelne Leuchte zum Protagonisten einer eigenen Inszenierung: Ein netzartig durch den Raum gespanntes Schienensystem, bunte Hintergründe aus Farbklecksen an Decken, Wänden und Böden oder dezent gestaltete Bereiche für Leuchten, die eher durch ihre Anwendungsmöglichkeiten punkten, waren dementsprechend hier zu sehen.

A total of 150 kilometres of cable, 11.2 million LED pixels and 2,300 m² of mirrored surface made the exhibit of AUDI AG into an holistic, multifaceted and multimedia experience.

It took a while for visitors to the trade fair stand of AUDI AG to get accustomed to all the different spatial impressions – because a number of things were turned upside down. “A new point of view: consider mobility from an unusual perspective” was the slogan of the exhibition stand at the International Automobile Exhibition IAA 2013 designed and realised by the designers from Munich-based office KMS BLACKSPACE GmbH – concept, communication and media productions – and SCHMIDHUBER – concept and architecture.

In order to transport the themes urbanisation, individualisation and connectively into a brand space, first a free-standing 3,400 m² pavilion was erected in the outdoor area of the Frankfurt exhibition grounds. The white cube-shaped building appeared to be floating in thin air thanks to the mirrored strip running round the facade of the ground floor. On the inside, the visitor was immediately surprised by the “hanging city”: buildings, streets, squares and whole neighbourhoods jutting from the ceiling, into which urban life was breathed with the help of projections, were reflected in the ceilings and walls, thus creating seemingly endless cityscapes. And although some things were clearly out of place in the trade fair booth of the VW subsidiary, the way the scene was set nevertheless created a uniform and innovative image of the brand.

Es brauchte seine Zeit, bis sich die Besucher des Messestands der AUDI AG an die vielfältigen räumlichen Eindrücke gewöhnt hatten – denn so einiges stand hier auf dem Kopf. „Perspektivwechsel: Mobilität aus einem ungewohnten Blickwinkel betrachten“ lautete schließlich auch das Motto der Ausstellung auf der Internationalen AutomobilAusstellung IAA 2013, die von den Gestaltern der Münchner Büros KMS BLACKSPACE GmbH – Konzept, Kommunikation und Medienbespielung – und SCHMIDHUBER – Konzept und Architektur – gestaltet und umgesetzt wurde.

Um die Themen Urbanisierung, Individualisierung und Vernetzung in einen Markenraum zu transportieren, entstand zunächst ein freistehender 3.400 Quadratmeter großer Pavillon auf dem Außengelände der Frankfurter Messe, dessen weiße Kubatur durch das verspiegelte Fassadenband im Erdgeschoss scheinbar zu schweben schien. Bereits hier zeigte sich die „hängende Stadt“, mit der die Besucher im Inneren überrascht wurden: Von der Decke ragende Gebäude, Straßen, Plätze und ganze Stadtviertel, denen mithilfe von Projektionen urbanes Leben eingehaucht wurde, spiegelten sich an Decken und Wänden und schufen so unendlich wirkende Stadt-Landschaften. Und obwohl beim Auftritt der VW-Tochter so manches zunächst nicht an seinem richtigen Platz gewesen zu sein schien, schuf die Inszenierung doch ein einheitliches und innovatives Bild der Marke.
