A LEGACY OF LEARNING The legacy of Horst Rechelbacher extends far beyond the creation of Aveda. A pioneer of holistic beauty, and a champion of environmental responsibility, Horst’s purpose and passion have taken on a momentum of their own as part of a greater global movement toward balance and harmony, both individual and collective. Born in Austria in 1941 to an herbalist mother and a shoemaker father, Horst began working in the salon across the street at the age of 14. “I was not a good student at all but I was very eager to be something different,” he said. Horst was a natural talent, and by age 17, he was working as a stylist at a prestigious salon in Rome, tending to international celebrities. By the age of 20, he had won the European Hairstyling Championship, which he used as a springboard to tour Europe and the United States. “What is a calling? It’s like almost a fire inside me and it keeps me alive,” he said.

A LIFELONG STUDENT A world-class stylist in his teens, Horst ended up

in Minneapolis, Minnesota by accident. During a stylist competition in 1963, Horst’s car was hit by a drunk driver. After recovering, he decided to settle in Minneapolis and opened his own salon, Horst &

Friends. As his success grew and he opened more salons, Horst faced burnout from overworking. With the help of yoga, meditation, and herbal remedies he re-entered his life. Following a retreat in India in 1970, Horst adopted holistic thinking and the belief that individual beauty is directly linked to the beauty of the world around us. His were ideas that would revolutionize the beauty industry. “We are the earth,” he said.

I am a 13-year marine corps veteran. I joined the marine corps when I was 17 years old and I got out when I was 30. I knew that hair was going to be my path, I just wasn’t sure how I was going to make that transition from the military, especially the marine corp. Going from a predominantly male career to one where I am dealing with primarily women on a day-to-day basis. That alone was a bit tricky, but I have always been a firm believer that you cannot talk about your success without talking about your failures. I first went to another cosmetology school where there was a situation that happened, and I was expelled from the school. I got out of the Marine Corps in October 2016 I started at that school in November 2016. After 13 years in the marine corps, jumping straight into my dream and not taking a moment to really get ready for it was probably my biggest mistake. But, I wouldn’t change one thing. My thirteen years of Marine service gave me the experience in the world to be able to build relationships with everyone. The military also helped pay for my school.

When I was in school, I started working at a salon as the front desk girl. I actually got fired because I started doing hair, after hours, which I was not supposed to do. Somebody had asked me to do their hair, and I wasn’t licensed. That was the thing that triggered me to go into hair school. I remember working all summer to transfer into this school of social work from a sociology program. I worked really hard and I took extra classes and it was like a month out before school was supposed to start and I remember I hadn’t booked any of my classes, which means you’re not going to get any of the classes you want. I was with my parents and it was like a coming out moment for me. I stood in front of them in the living room. I’ll never forget this moment, I told them, “hey, you know, I think I want to be a hairstylist” and they just kind of blinked and looked at me and they were like, “Well, we knew that. We couldn’t tell you, you needed to decide it on your own” I was like, “oh, OK then!”

New York was definitely the goal. I came to New York at like 15 or 16 years old and my eyes were wide open, I was blown away. Especially coming from Cincinnati which I thought was the big city and then coming to New York, was just… Wow! This is the big city. And I fell in love with it. I needed to find a way so I can end up here eventually. I knew I wanted to be behind the chair, but I didn’t’ necessarily know until I got to New York how many options you have, especially in a city like this. You can do so many different things with it. It opened my eyes. I don’t just have to be behind the chair. I love being behind the chair, but I can do so many different things. I knew I always wanted to do Fashion Week. Beginning in 2011, I was doing at least on season. That kind of tapered off, I did like eight hard seasons back to back to back and now I’m a little more picky. Just because it’s a lot and it’s amazing, but it’s a lot. It’s great being my own boss, but I don’t think I would have been able to do any of that without the education and foundation I received from Aveda.

Originally, I thought I was either gonna be a rock star or point guard for the Chicago Bulls. Then I found out that I’m short and I’m not nearly good looking enough to be a rockstar, so I figured I got do something else. I’ve never had any problems in school, like flunk out of school or anything like that. I just had a real problem going to school – like actually making into the class, I was that kid. I wasn’t really a good “sitting-behind-a-desk” kind of person, so I needed to find something that I was able to up and moving and doing. When I was 15, I worked a show in Columbus and saw Van on stage cutting hair. At that time I was in a band with some friends and I was like, “he looks like a Rockstar up there.” That’s something I could do. My mom owned an Aveda Salon for years and I’d already been hanging out in her salon and I just kind of got more interested in that moment. I’m not a college guy. It’s just not me. It crushed my dad. My dad’s dream was for me to be a frat boy and to go away to school because he never had that opportunity. He had to work his way through college. Meanwhile, I thought that sounded like torture. But, he was really openminded about it. He thinks it was a great thing for me to go into and now he’s my biggest cheerleader.
