Spicing up Retrospective Meetings with ESVP Activity

We are Agile with Agile !

We just started Sprint # 16. This means we have been developing and following the process for almost 8 months. We are young (at least that's what we feel) and restless. It was time to make changes to those Sprint meetings. We are Indians so It was time to SPICE THINGS UP !!

We picked the Retrospective meetings and added an activity to the mix. The activity is called "ESVP" and was adapted from the book "Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great" by Esther Derby and Diana Larsen.

A quick doodling on our favorite white board. Four blocks identified as Explorer, Shopper, Vacationer and Prisoner (ESVP as you see). What do they stand for? Here you go.

Explorer: Excited to be in the retrospective.

Shopper: Open to learn new things.

Vacationer: Glad to away from his/her desk Prisoner: Does not like retrospective and feels like punishment

Stage was set, the regular meeting was done with and now was the time for the curtain raiser.

Each member was asked to identify themselves as Explorer, Shopper, Vacationer or Prisoner depending on how they felt about the Retrospective meetings.

A few hush voices poking each other and some deep thoughts, the team came up with their choices and decorated our white board. Here is how it looked.

We had mostly Explorers and Shoppers and one Vacationer. Luckily no Prisoners :)
