AVDA’s mission is to end family violence by advocating for the safety and self-determination of victims, promoting accountability for abusers and fostering a community response to abuse.

Because of your volunteerism, commitment to our mission and support, AVDA enjoyed many successes which we are pleased to share in our 2018 Annual Report.

As I reflect on the previous year, much has been accomplished and much of that progress took place in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The AVDA staff and Board of Directors remain committed to our mission to “end family violence by advocating for the safety and self-determination of victims, promoting accountability for abusers and fostering a community response to abuse.” We remain truly grateful to our volunteers, donors and partners for sharing in our work and providing unwavering leadership and support for our mission.

PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS & KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS FROM 2018 •

AVDA expanded its services to Fort Bend County in 2017; 18 months after opening the Fort Bend office, AVDA’s two-person, full-time paralegal and attorney team had served 184 clients.

•

Through the work of AVDA’s eight staff attorneys, $2.1 million in child support and community assets were awarded to AVDA’s legal clients in 2018.

•

In 2018, AVDA coordinated with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to create the region’s first Domestic Violence High Risk Team (DVHRT). The goal of the DVHRT is to increase victim safety, increase batterer accountability, and improve the community’s response to issues facing the most vulnerable victims of domestic abuse.

AVDA’s second annual Camp Carefree, a camp created specifically for AVDA’s clients, was held at Camp Aranzazu in Rockport on June 22-24, and welcomed a total of 41 clients and children. Camp Carefree serves as an extension of AVDA’s goal to assist survivors in escaping abuse and rebuilding their lives to truly begin again.

In April 2018, AVDA hosted its second End Abuse Awareness Breakfast featuring Ret. Lt. Mark Wynn, nationally acclaimed domestic violence speaker. This no-cost event built awareness of domestic violence and provided AVDA a platform to educate Houston about domestic violence and the agency’s efforts to end abuse and serve survivors of domestic violence.

In October 2018, AVDA held the 13th annual Home Safe Home Gala and hosted over 450 guests at The Revaire. The 2018 Home Safe Home Gala marked the highest grossing gala in the agency’s history.

AVDA partnered with the Astros Foundation in 2018 to fund a threeyear commitment to the Coaching Boys into Men (CBIM) program.

In 2018, AVDA expanded the CBIM program to Wisdom High School, Northside High School and Strake Jesuit.

On October 15, 2018, an Evening of Remembrance, Caring and Hope was presented by the Interfaith Advisory Council. Domestic violence advocates, law enforcement officers, and survivors’ friends and family members gathered at City Hall for a multi-faith vigil in reverent memory of those who had lost their lives in 2018 to domestic violence. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, District Attorney Kim Ogg, and Sheriff Ed Gonzalez spoke.

With a four-member staff in Community Awareness and Prevention, AVDA was able to expand outreach efforts for victim services, which included training staff at partner service providers and/or providing materials with AVDA information at shelters and clinics. Staff at Texas Children’s Pediatrics Care Clinics, Legacy Community Health Clinics, Next Level Urgent Care and Women’s Pregnancy Clinic have received training on how to respond to disclosures from patients regarding a domestic violence incident and how to make a referral.

AVDA’s Battering Intervention and Prevention Program provided domestic violence awareness and prevention training for the fourth year to the Houston Texans’ rookie team.

AVDA PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

FAMILY VIOLENCE PROGRAM AVDA’s bilingual advocates provide legal intake, needs assessment, crisis intervention, safety planning, referral and emergency funding for rent, utilities, food, transportation and clothing to clients.

3,105 clients received information and referrals for housing, financial or job assistance, child care, or connection to other legal services not provided by AVDA.

3,182 domestic violence calls were answered by AVDA client advocates.

LEGAL ADVOCACY PROGRAM AVDA staff attorneys and paralegals provide free legal representation and support to survivors of domestic abuse through protective orders, divorce, child custody, adoption in the case of parent fatality and child support cases within Fort Bend and Harris counties. Protective orders have no income requirements, while divorce and child custody/support cases are accepted for survivors with low to moderate income. Cases with exceptional merit (such as high lethality) may also be accepted, regardless of income.

4,042 adult and child survivors of domestic violence served. 96% of legal clients reported feeling safer because of AVDA services.

COUNSELING AVDA’s highly trained, trauma-informed counselor provides group and individual counseling, addressing issues such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, depression, insomnia, parenting challenges and more. Both youth and adult survivors are served by the licensed, bilingual counselor. AVDA’s education-based support group for survivors, with special emphasis on the impact of abuse on children, is open to voluntary and mandated clients, and is offered at no cost to the client.

900 counseling sessions were provided to survivors of domestic abuse.

BATTERING INTERVENTION & PREVENTION PROGRAM (BIPP) AVDA provides psycho-educational counseling for individuals who have been abusive in their relationships in the greater Houston area (Harris, Galveston and Montgomery counties) through its nationally acclaimed BIPP. AVDA’s BIPP is the first in Texas to be fully accredited and its 18–week program has low–cost group sessions with a strong emphasis on the impact of abuse on children.

Data collected over a six-year period on 802 individuals enrolled in AVDA’s BIPP program showed that individuals who did not complete AVDA’s BIPP requirements were 2.3 times more likely to recidivate and 2.4 times more likely to commit a subsequent violent offense, suggesting that completion of AVDA’s BIPP is associated with reduced recidivism. 901 abusers were provided intervention and prevention counseling through BIPP. COMMUNITY AWARENESS & PREVENTION PROGRAM AVDA works with youth across the greater Houston area in abuse prevention and intervention to break the cycle of violence in their lives.

AVDA provides adult and youth presentations, workshops and programs across the community to heighten awareness about domestic violence. Topics include domestic abuse prevention, healthy relationships, dating violence, workplace violence, health care responses to abuse, domestic abuse risks and more.

4,990 youth received abuse prevention programing.

11,064 adults were reached through community outreach.

2018 EVENT HIGHLIGHTS END ABUSE AWARENESS BREAKFAST

Over 300 supporters, community partners and guests gathered at the 2018 End Abuse Awareness Breakfast on April 11. The event served to inform attendees about domestic violence and the work performed in the greater Houston area by AVDA. Carter Dugan and Rachel Roosth, both with Presenting Sponsor Norton Rose Fulbright, co-chaired this no-cost breakfast event with KPRC-TV Meteorologist Khambrel Marshall serving as emcee.

This second awareness breakfast featured keynote speaker Ret. Lt. Mark Wynn, a nationally acclaimed domestic violence expert, and Shelina Khureshi, former AVDA client. Wynn spoke about his childhood experiences of growing up with family violence and shared that as a lieutenant with the Nashville police force, he learned to “apply gentle, relentless pressure on law enforcement and the judicial system to change the culture and not rob children of their futures.” Khureshi delivered a heartfelt and moving testimonial related to her experience with AVDA as a client.

HOME SAFE HOME 2018 AVDA’s 2018 Home Safe Home Gala, held on October 17, at The Revaire, was the highest grossing gala in AVDA’s history, raising more than $500,000 to support AVDA’s mission to end family violence. The event was chaired by Carla Diaz-Lewis and Kenneth Lewis and Bonnie and Dr. Larry Likover. The Home Safe Home Gala has become renowned as one of Houston’s premier chef tasting events and featured creations from 12 top chefs paired with wines selected by four event sommeliers.

The centerpiece of the Home Safe Home Gala was the presentation of two awards: AVDA’s Heart of Houston Award, presented to Cyndy Garza Roberts for her exemplary service to Houston and its citizens through philanthropy and volunteerism, and The Joseph D. Jamail Award for Justice, presented to Lynn Kamin by last year’s Joseph D. Jamail Award recipient, Ronald D. Krist.

Khambrel Marshall acted as emcee with AVDA Board Chairman Steve Winter welcoming the crowd. The evening’s festivities included a Wine Pull presented by Coldwell Banker, amazing auction packages on the Big Board, and the Tenenbaum 10K, a gift certificate for $10,000 to Tenenbaum Jewelers.

Of the more than $500,000 raised, $74,150 benefitted the Joseph D. Jamail Endowment. The Jamail Endowment Fund permanently endows an AVDA attorney position to provide legal services to victims of domestic abuse who are categorized as “working poor”, meaning they do not qualify for traditional legal aid but do not earn enough to pay for quality legal representation.
