LEADERSHIP MESSAGE DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS: We are pleased to present the AVANCE-2015 Annual Report: The Key to Houston's Future. This report highlights so many great accomplishments for the past year, and outcomes pointing to a brighter future for AVANCE. We completed and released the AVANCE Vision 2025 report, a plan that will guide AVANCE for the next 10 years. The report represents the work of a very forward thinking committee made up of education experts, corporate and community representatives, research and academic professionals and service providers who worked together during the year to develop the Vision. What impressed us most of all is the confidence they expressed in AVANCE's parent engagement model. Children who participate in AVANCE's Parent Child Education Programs have a 90% graduation rate and families improve their earning significantly. Our Vision is to grow this model to impact more families.

JOSE VILLARREAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

We welcomed new grants; including the 5 year renewals of our Head Start and Healthy Marriage grants to keep a major portion of our portfolio of programs intact. We expanded and strengthened our “holistic” model by adding; the Early Head Start and Child Care grant, which enables us to assist early child care organizations to raise their standards. We also received a Fatherhood grant from AVANCE Inc. and the “Building an Educated Workforce” grant from the Gulf-Coast Workforce board. We strengthened collaborations by partnering with the Spring Independent School District. This means that 350 more children will have access to reaching pre-school services before entering Kindergarten. We launched a relationship with Santa Maria Hostel to teach parenting skills to women who are transitioning from incarceration.

We increased our funding for Aldine ISD's preschool program, and partnered with My Little World Academy and Wesley Community Center to help them raise the quality of early childhood education. These programs will open doors for very young parents and their children under the age of three. Additionally, we bolstered our workforce efforts and resources in order to create a stronger and more educated community. In 2025, we want to report that we successfully met the aspirations of our ten-year goal to reach more than 30,000 individuals a year. Neither the current success nor the anticipated growth is possible without your support as donors, volunteers, funders, advisory committees, employees and board members. RICK NORIEGA AVANCE INC., PRESIDENT AND CEO

RON ORAN BOARD CHAIR

We believe that the families we serve have a bright future ahead, and the services we provide are an essential Key to Houston's Future. Thank you for your continued support, as always we look forward to working closely with you. 3

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

THE VISION 2025 REPORT AVANCE released a Vision 2025 Report, which was drafted with the input of community leaders who worked together to develop the organization's vision plan for the next 10 years. The report focuses on strengthening three main areas: Direct Services, Collaborations and Advocacy.

$4.6 MILLION IN GRANTS AVANCE received funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to continue providing Healthy Marriage and Fatherhood services for the next five years. The grant also funded additional early childhood education services through partnerships with childcare providers.

LEADERS IN THE COMMUNICATIONS ARENA The Public Relations Society of America honored the AVANCE marketing and communications team with the Nonprofit Communications Team of the Year award, in recognition of strong collaborations with media outlets and effective multimedia strategies developed and executed to reach a broad range of audiences. AVANCE earned this award in 2012, and once again in 2015.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR, LUZ FLORES HONORED FOR SERVING OTHERS

4

Luz Flores was honored by Houston Woman Magazine with the Wise Woman award in recognition of 30 years of exemplary dedication and commitment to serving the community through volunteer work and leadership roles held with multiple national nonprofit organizations throughout her career.

OXFORD PLACE & GOLDEN FOREST HEAD START CENTERS RECOGNIZED BY NAEYC The two centers earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This recognizes the centers as being among the top high-quality early childhood education providers in the nation. While Oxford Place and Golden Forest earned a new accreditation, the Jensen Drive, Ketelsen and Acres Homes centers also received a five year extension to their previously earned accreditations.

FEATURED ON NATIONAL TELEVISION The Univision morning show “Despierta America” (Wake-Up America), based in Florida, visited AVANCE to do a feature story on our holistic model. The 4-minute story spotlighted a grandmother who exemplifies the effectiveness of AVANCE programs, through her involvement in her grandson's education and her perseverance towards a better future. The segment aired during the network's National Education Week.

THREE NEW CENTERS

WALTERS ROAD HEAD START - May 18th marked the grand–opening of the Walters Road center, which serves 127 children. The celebration commemorated the 50th anniversary of Head Start, and children planted a red rose bush, as former President Lyndon B. Johnson did in 1965 in front of the White House to announce this great program that would change the lives of millions of children in the nation.

NORTHSIDE EARLY HEAD STARTThe newly remodeled center located on the grounds of Holy Name Church, serves 32 children, zero-to-three year olds and provides support services to their parents. Elected officials joined the ribbon cutting ceremony, including Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee and Congressman Gene Green, as the center serves families from both districts.

LEWIS HEAD START- One hundred children are now receiving Head Start services in the Lewis Elementary campus located in the Spring Independent School District. Parents from the school are also encouraged to take advantage of additional support services offered by AVANCE.

5

PARTNERED WITH SANTA MARIA HOSTEL TO SERVE MOTHERS RELEASED FROM PRISON The Parent-Child Education Program is being provided to mothers, who have been released from prison, as part of substance abuse-residential treatment, helping them reintegrate back into everyday life. The service is offered on-site at the hostel teaching mothers parenting skills and the concept of “learning through play,” by making educational toys for their children. They also receive visits from the program instructors who provide additional coaching. While the mothers attend class, their toddlers also participate in the early childhood development services that help them stimulate their five senses and prepare them for preschool.

A STRONG PRESENCE IN WASHINGTON D.C. TWO-GENERATION MODEL FEATURED AMONG TOP IN THE NATION The National Head Start Association selected the AVANCE holistic model among the Top Six in the nation for our successful outcomes in educating parents and their children simultaneously. As a result, members of the leadership staff were invited to present the model to Head Start programs from across the nation, during the National Head Start Conference.

RECOGNIZED FOR BEST PRACTICES IN MEASURING IMPACT AVANCE was invited to participate in national seminars and share insights on measuring the impact in breaking cycles of poverty through parent engagement and early childhood education. AVANCE partnered with the following organizations: Results for America, Buffet Early Learning, National Head Start Association, Urban Institute, and the National Institute of Early Learning Research.

HONORED AND NAMED BENEFICIARY OF U.S. MEXICO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE-WOODLANDS GALA The Chamber of Commerce hosted its Second Annual Fiestas Patrias Gala, honoring leaders in the community, while promoting the importance of education and highlighting AVANCE programs. Partial proceeds from the event were designated to fund college scholarships for AVANCE GED graduates and the Parent-Child Education Program.

ADULT EDUCATION AVANCE provides Adult Education programs with a continuum of services that prepare students to access higher education. ABE/GED The Adult Basic Education program provides instruction in mathematics, reading, and writing. The GED academic program prepares students to succeed in obtaining their GED Certificate (High School Equivalency). ESL (English as Second Language) AVANCE offers classes at basic and intermediate levels for adults who wish to improve their ability to speak, read, or write the English language. GED on the Move To create a college-bound culture within our families, AVANCE offers GED On the Move, a program that prepares our GED students to transition into viable post-secondary career options, including college credit enrollment, child development certificate training, and job skills training. Through this program, we also offer assistance with financial aid applications, mentors, parent coaching academy, college field trips, online labs, tutoring, and scholarship opportunities for students enrolling in college. GENERAL OFFICE SUPPORT SPECIALIST (GOSS) This three month program prepares students to become administrative assistants by typing skills, internet usage and Microsoft Office, telephone etiquette, customer service and professional communication skills.

WORKFORCE To create pathways to post-secondary education and economic success, we prepare parents for the workforce. Services include: resume building, career coaching, professional development, job etiquette, preparing for interviews, and we also help our participants find employment. Our goal is to prepare families with job skills training and help them to become self-sufficient.

HEALTHY MARRIAGE (offered in English and Spanish) This program provides married, engaged couples, or singles access to marriage education services, so they can acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to form and sustain a healthy relationship for the well-being of the family. The program offers weekly interactive, educational, and fun workshops, with presentations in diverse topics designed to help couples enhance the quality of their relationship and help their children succeed.

“Parents are the First Teachers, Home is the First Classroom” The Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP) serves as a national model of early intervention, designed to affirm that the welfare of children, families, and community is mutually reinforcing. The program is based on the premise that parents are their children's first and most important teachers. Through a variety of workshops and creative

toy-making sessions, parents learn to help their children excel during their most critical years of learning. PCEP is the primary gateway to AVANCE. Upon completion, parents can also transition to other programs, preparing themselves to pursue higher education and/or join the workforce.

The Houston Fire Department provided safety workshops for children and parents across the centers throughout the year. The firemen and women arrived in fire trucks and mobile safety units giving families the opportunity to learn techniques to remain safe during fires or natural disasters.

12

Volunteers painted an interactive mural that includes a bike trail and different games. The artwork brought an educational aspect to the play area, stimulating the children's imagination through creativity and lots of color. The group also landscaped and built vegetable gardens near the entrance of the center giving the parents and children a fresh and more welcoming experience.

AVANCE children transformed the Mangum Center parking lot into their own arcade, by building creative games from recycled materials, as part of the National Global Cardboard Challenge. Over 90 games were built with STEM components in mind; a perfect fit for engineering students from Rice University, who joined the fun and helped set-up stations, handed out refreshments, interacted with the families to learn more about the process of constructing their masterpieces, and helped monitor multiple areas to ensure everyone was having a great time.

The Early Head Start Fall Festival was an enjoyable experience for all parents and children, with activities ranging from cake walk, ring toss, karaoke and more while children walked around wearing their own home-made costumes. PDVSA volunteers added lots of smiles to the celebration by coordinating games, helping set up booths and giving away boxes of diapers and wipes for the families.

AVANCE transformed our lives. We learned the importance of continuously showing love and appreciation towards each other through words and actions, in order to continue nurturing our relationship. As new parents, we are now better prepared to raise our daughter with strong values and instill in her the importance of education beginning at her young age. Our dream is to continue furthering our own education and become excellent role models for her and her future siblings.
