SEPTEMBER 2025 VOLUME 6

This September, Avalon Park Orlando celebrates Local Legends—the people, businesses, and organizations whose impact makes our town shine. Throughout this edition you will find highlights of community champions, inspiring programs, and a heartfelt tribute to the late Nuno, a dear friend and business owner whose warmth and dedication touched so many. His presence will be greatly missed, but his legacy lives on in the community he helped nurture.
The Marketplace continues to grow as a destination for food, fun, and connection. Southern Fowl recently opened its doors, serving up southern comfort favorites, and anticipation is already building for Ferratti’s Artisan Pizza, Focaccia and Pasta, opening this October. Families are also enjoying the new Kiddleton game machines, adding arcade excitement to the mix. In addition to the new dining and
entertainment options, the Marketplace remains a hub of community gathering, with memorable evenings such as Dueling Pianos and Family Bingo filling the space with music, laughter, and togetherness.
The month ahead is also packed with community events that bring Avalon Park to life. From live music and food truck nights to yoga, trivia, and art programs, the calendar is filled with opportunities to gather with friends and neighbors. September also welcomes back favorites like Prosper & Flourish, Teacher Tuesday, and Moon Over Avalon, all adding to the unique small-town culture that makes this community so special.
We are also excited to see the return of the Love Our Youth Teen Lounge, which once again provides a safe and engaging space for teens to connect, learn, and grow. This program reflects the heart of Avalon Park—creating opportunities for every generation to thrive.
As you enjoy this month’s edition, we invite you to read the stories of local legends who have shaped our community and continue to inspire us every day. From new businesses and programs to cherished traditions and tributes, September reminds us that legends are not only found in history books—they are right here among us in Avalon Park.
over the last year our group of companies has been selling a great deal of holdings, and some of those transactions have been making headlines around the globe.
My first reaction to comments about my retirement (and being in my early 60’s I took the hint) was: retirement is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible! And no, I am not planning on it for many years to come.
As the CEO of sitEX, Switzerland and US, former President and largest shareholder of VOXX International, CEO and owner of Avalon Park Group, together with a dedicated team, I have been active on 4 continents (America, Europe, Asia and Australia) over the last decade and more.
APG and affiliates indeed have been mostly on the selling side of companies, projects and buildings over the last year. Over more than 3 decades as an entrepreneur I learned, there is a time to buy, a time to hold and a time to sell.
However, there is another reason for some of the transactions: COMING HOME, home to Avalon Park, Orlando and Central Florida!
I grew up in Zurich, Switzerland, almost 5,000 miles away from Avalon Park. I love Zurich and I love Switzerland. However, over the last decades AVALON PARK ORLANDO became the town, where I feel the most at home.
From the corner office on the 4th floor of the APG building at 3801 Avalon Park East Blvd, downstairs to Marketplace, across the street to the East Orlando Gym (which soon will be renamed the Avalon Park Gym), and in all places of this great town of Avalon Park Orlando is where I feel a strong sense of belonging!
has grown stronger than ever: our greatest strengths—our people, capital, and experience— are meant for Central Florida.
Across our many local projects, Avalon Park Wesley Chapel stands out right now. It is truly “on fire.” Downtown One, a beautiful mixed-use building with apartments above retail, has opened its doors. Nearly 1,000 homes—from single-family to townhomes, cottages, and apartments—are currently under construction in Avalon Park Wesley Chapel, along with a new high school. The scale of building we are seeing here rivals the boom of 2005.
We are also proud partners with Academica, based out of Miami, in charter schools in Orlando, Wesley Chapel, and Tavares—all rated A schools. Their popularity is clear—with waiting lists in some locations exceeding 2,000 students.
Encore, our assisted-living community in Avalon Park Orlando, was recently voted Best Assisted Living Community in Orlando. We are now in our 11th year of operations and continue to thrive.
With over 30 ventures in Central Florida, I can assure you there is never a dull moment at APG.
Stay tuned….there is still much more to come.
Happy September!
I hope everyone was able to enjoy the Labor Day weekend, taking some time to relax, connect with family and friends, and recharge, whether through quiet reflection or outdoor adventure. It’s always a good reminder to appreciate life’s simple pleasures and return refreshed. Looking ahead, Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, a time to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Please keep an eye out for County events in the coming weeks honoring this important observance.
As we are nearing the end of Orange County’s 2024-2025 fiscal year, the Board of County Commissioners will be holding public hearings to finalize the County’s budget for the next fiscal year. The dates are September 4th at 5pm, September 16th at 5pm, September 18th at 5pm and September 30th at 5pm. All four of these public hearings will be held at the County Administration Building in Downtown Orlando (201 S Rosalind Ave, Orlando FL 32801). If you are interested in this budget process, I encourage you to watch the proceedings either on Orange TV or by attending in person.
On Friday, September 26th I will be hosting the bimonthly D4 Business Bridge Connection networking and informational event. The event will start at 6pm and will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn near UCF (1959 N Alafaya Trail, Orlando, FL 32826). This business and networking opportunity will have a speaker from Orange County’s Business Development Division, where attendees can learn how to get certified as a vendor with Orange County
and learn about the County’s new Small Business Enterprise Program. I encourage anyone interested to attend.
On September 3rd, Orange County’s 2025 Mid-Decade Redistricting Advisory Committee will hold its final meeting and formally transmit its recommended County Commission map to the Board of County Commissioners review. I greatly encourage anyone who is interested in the process of adding to new districts to the County Commission to attend this final meeting (6pm at the County Administration Center, 201 S Rosalind Ave, Orlando FL 32801) and give public comment if you desire to help the committee members in their decision making. Additionally, the co-chairs of the committee will present their findings and recommendations to the Commissioners at the September 16th meeting, with a final vote by the Commissioners tentatively scheduled for October 14th.
Hurricane Season is underway, and as the season continues to progress, it’s important to stay prepared as the risk of storms will continue to increase over the coming weeks. Stay informed on safety precautions and sandbag pickup locations by signing up for updates at OCAlert.net. For additional preparedness tips and important information, visit the County’s Emergency Information page at ocfl.net/ EmergencySafety/EmergencyInformation. aspx
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881.
You can also meet me in person on the first Wednesdays of the month at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the Third Wednesdays of the month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center (1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm. Thank you again and enjoy September!
Back-to-school season is always a time of excitement, fresh starts, and new opportunities—and at The Flats at Avalon Park, it’s also a time to celebrate community. This year, the team at The Flats wanted to do something special for their youngest residents as they geared up for the first day of school. To send students off on the right foot, staff put together fun goodie bags filled with supplies and little treats, and shared warm well wishes with families heading into the new school year.
The gesture was small but meaningful, reminding families that life at The Flats goes beyond just apartment living—it’s about being part of a supportive and connected neighborhood. Parents and children alike were all smiles as they picked up their bags, grateful for the thoughtfulness that makes living here feel so unique.
Location is everything when choosing where to live, and The Flats offers a prime advantage for families with school-aged children. Situated in the heart of Avalon Park, the community is surrounded by some of Orlando’s top-rated schools. From multiple elementary schools to middle and high schools, all within less than a five-minute drive, families can enjoy peace of mind knowing that their children have access to A-rated education right in their backyard. This makes The Flats not just a convenient place to live, but truly an ideal environment to grow up in.
Residents often note that The Flats at Avalon Park strikes the perfect balance between modern living and small-town charm. With a variety of shops,
restaurants, and community events happening just steps away, families don’t have to go far to find both fun and convenience. The back-to-school giveaway is just one example of how management continually works to create a vibrant, welcoming environment where everyone feels at home.
As one resident shared, “It’s things like this that make The Flats so special. The goodie bags were such a thoughtful surprise for the kids, and it’s just one of many ways the staff shows they care about us as a community. We’re so grateful to live in a place that makes family life easier and more fun.”

In a community built on connection and compassion, few places embody the heart of Avalon Park quite like Encore at Avalon Park. This year, Encore is proud to celebrate a series of meaningful recognitions that shine a light on its commitment to residents and families alike. Voted Orlando’s Best Assisted Living Facility – Gold Winner, awarded Orlando Sentinel’s Assisted Living Gold, and honored with Orlando Sentinel’s Memory Care Silver, Encore continues to set the standard for excellence in senior living.
These awards are not simply plaques on a wall. They are a reflection of the extraordinary people who bring Encore to life each day. From the dedicated staff who provide personalized care with patience and dignity, to the volunteers who share their time and talents, the Encore family is what makes this
community a local legend in its own right.
Encore has always been more than a place to live—it is a place to belong. Residents enjoy daily activities designed to enrich both body and mind, from fitness and art classes to music, social gatherings, and intergenerational programs that bring together students, neighbors, and friends. Volunteers, many of whom live right here in Avalon Park, play a vital role, creating meaningful connections that brighten days and strengthen bonds across generations.
Behind the programs and awards is a team united by a shared mission: to honor every resident’s story while fostering an environment where joy, comfort, and community thrive. Their dedication is seen in the little things—the smile that greets each morning, the patience in listening to a memory retold, the thoughtful details that make every individual feel valued and at home.
As Encore enters its eleventh year in Avalon Park, these recent recognitions serve as both a celebration and a reminder of what makes this place truly special. It is not only about professional excellence, though that is evident. It is about people—the caregivers, the volunteers, the families, and most of all, the residents—who together create a community where life is lived fully, every day.
In honoring Local Legends this month, we proudly count Encore at Avalon Park among them. For the residents who call it home, for the families who entrust their loved ones, and for the team and volunteers who make it extraordinary, Encore is a shining example of what it means to care with heart.
This August, the spirit of community and generosity was on full display thanks to the efforts of local leader and Realtor, Gisela Gaztambide, Your Realtor Mom. Partnering with the Rotary Club and an incredible network of community supporters, Gisela hosted the Bithlo School Ready event—an afternoon designed to equip local students with everything they need to start the school year with confidence and pride.
Gisela didn’t just coordinate the event—she lived it. She secured sponsors, donated many of the supplies herself, and even brought in local hairdressers to provide free haircuts so kids could head back to school looking and feeling their best. In addition to distributing book bags, school supplies, and personal hygiene items, the event featured a true community feast.
Gisela and Nayda Colon’s Boutique provided hotdogs and chips, while the Rotary Club brought the griddle and served up the food. Realtor Santa Santos prepared boxed lunches with sandwiches, chips, and cookies. Bombastic Juice kept everyone refreshed with fresh juices, and a shaved ice truck— sponsored by Ivitality—was on hand for a sweet treat. Walmart also joined the effort, donating fresh produce and other goods.
But Gisela’s community spirit didn’t stop there. Just days later, she teamed up with the Marketplace at Avalon Park to host the Cheers to the New School Year celebration for parents dropping their kids off on the first day of school. Guests enjoyed mimosas, connection, and a fun way to mark the start of a new chapter.
Through her creativity, determination, and generosity, Gisela
exemplifies what it means to be a Local Legend—someone who not only dreams of a better community but rolls up her sleeves and makes it happen. She has shown that when neighbors come together, everyone benefits, and our community truly shines.
An Orlando Science Schools student who flew to Europe for an international tournament came back home with an impressive win. David Avila put his knowledge of historical events to the test during the International History Olympiad in Paris this summer, which more than 400 people competed in. The event tested children and teens on a variety of topics including the French military, classical music and the Hindi language. David placed 25th in the world for the middle school division.
September is National Fruits & Veggies Month which offers an opportunity for everyone to celebrate all the goodness that fruits and veggies bring to our tables, minds, health and happiness.
Avalon Elementary received a grant from Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program whose mission is to empower young people to affect positive change in their communities. Their Garden Club decided to bridge the gap to encourage more people to grow fruits and vegetables at home by introducing a Seed Library in our community. They knew they wanted to keep the grant funds within the Avalon community so they sought out of our local carpenters, Maple Leaf Designs. Shawn and Nery Thorimbert were excited to donate their labor and partner on the project! Special thanks to Amanda Greenfield for creating this project, Ms. Wilkerson for giving it the best artistic touch and Michael Miller for installing.
You can find in-season seeds along with local planting guides from our local University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences extension office. The new Seed Library is located just outside of the Avalon Community Garden behind Avalon Church. Come visit it soon and share photos tagging #AlwaysGrowing!

In Avalon Park, legends walk among us, not the kind found in storybooks, but real people whose everyday actions leave a lasting mark. From volunteers who unite neighbors to small business owners who become local icons, these individuals shape the soul of our community. Their stories deserve to be told, celebrated, and remembered.
When I think about what makes someone a legend, I’m reminded of my childhood. It wasn’t the superheroes on TV who inspired me most; it was the everyday people who shaped my world. My mom, a tireless pillar of strength and love. My family members, who guided me with wisdom and care. My teachers, who nurtured my curiosity and helped me grow. These were my first legends. They taught me that legendary impact isn’t about fame or fortune, it’s about consistent acts of kindness, dedication, and love that ripple through a community.
Orlando is full of people like this. From community leaders to passionate volunteers, our city thrives because of those who give their time, energy, and heart to make it better. These are the legends we should honor, not just for what they do, but for the legacy they leave behind.
Introducing the “Orlando Legends” Poster Contest!

Let’s start the school year off by learning a shocking statistic: On average, you drink, eat and breathe in anywhere from 74,000 to 121,000 pieces of microplastic every year.
Orlando Science Schools student Sheyna Patel recently earned a spot in the Young Scientist Challenge finals. In this annual national STEM tournament competition put on by technology company 3M and digital learning platform Discovery Education, middle schoolers are asked to come up with a science-based solution for a common problem. Sheyna Patel developed an eco-friendly and cost-effective hydrogel that can remove microplastics from water. She’s now fleshing out her idea thanks to a mentorship with a 3M scientist. The contest winner will be announced in October and will receive $25,000.

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a crucial time to shine a light on the importance of mental health awareness, education, and support. With suicide being a leading cause of death among people in their teenage years, it’s vital to have open conversations about mental health and take steps to reduce the stigma surrounding it.
The East Orlando Youth Advisory Board’s (YAB) mission is dedicated to strengthening the emotional well-being of youth through education, outreach, and connection. By offering kindness, empathy, and understanding, we can each play a role in saving lives.
YAB actively combats the feelings of isolation and hopelessness that often accompany mental health struggles by fostering an environment where love and support are at the forefront. We offer programs and events that help build resilience and empower teens to reach out for help before they reach a breaking point.
During Suicide Prevention Month, it’s important to remember that prevention starts with connection. Every act of support—whether it’s offering a listening ear, checking in on a friend,
or encouraging someone to seek professional help—can make a significant difference. Mental health issues, particularly among youth, are often compounded by feelings of loneliness, confusion, and fear. Organizations like L.O.V.E. Our Youth work tirelessly to break down these barriers, ensuring that youth have access to caring adults. This support is invaluable in preventing suicides and helping youth build a brighter, healthier future.
As we reflect on this Month, we are reminded that no one should have to struggle alone. Mental health challenges are common, and there is no shame in reaching out for help. Let’s stand together, be proactive in offering support, and create open spaces for dialogue.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for support. Help is available, and it starts with a single step toward healing.
Our Youth Advisory Board is all about empowering other teens and sharing tips to help them thrive. If you’re interested in getting involved, visit this link https://loveouryouth.org/links-east-orlandoyab/ to learn more!

The 5th Floor, a premier co-working space in Orlando, is located in the heart of Avalon Park Orlando and is dedicated to spotlighting members who are making remarkable contributions to the local business community. This month’s featured member is Sam Terrell, founder of Divergent U, an innovative entrepreneurship program designed to empower the next generation of business leaders.
Why The 5th Floor?
When selecting a location to host Divergent U’s classes, Sam prioritized finding a space that was both professional and inspiring. With many students participating in the program, a productive atmosphere with excellent lighting and an energetic vibe was essential. The 5th Floor’s modern amenities and collaborative environment made it the perfect home for Divergent U’s courses and events.
Using Summer to Reset
Divergent U operates its gap-year program for entrepreneurs from fall through spring, making summer the ideal time for a strategic reset. This past summer, Sam and the Divergent U team focused on publishing nine new workbooks to accompany the program’s curriculum and refining course materials to better serve future students.
The Power of a Co-Working Community
Sam believes that the benefits of a co-working community go far beyond simply having a place to work. Being surrounded by other motivated professionals fosters productivity and drives success. He compares it to a gym—when everyone is focused on reaching their goals, the positive habits and energy become contagious.
The 5th Floor’s Role in Growth
The 5th Floor has been instrumental in Divergent U’s growth by providing a supportive environment, flexible meeting spaces, and professional event hosting. Sam notes that every guest and student who visits is welcomed and well cared for, creating a polished and professional experience that strengthens the program’s reputation.
A Tip for Fellow Entrepreneurs
Sam’s best advice for business owners is to set clear finish lines and stay committed to reaching them before making major
changes. While it’s tempting to pivot when new opportunities arise, staying the course is essential for long-term success.
The 5th Floor is proud to have Sam Terrell and Divergent U as valued members of its thriving Avalon Park business community and looks forward to seeing the continued impact they will make in shaping future entrepreneurs.

Transforming your home can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Take advantage of the Back to School/ Summer Sale on flooring, backsplash, exterior/interior paint and much more. Whether you want to refresh your living spaces or consider a full remodel, there are countless ways to create a home that showcases your style and enhances its functionality. With inspiration and creativity, you can unlock the potential of every room. Here are some innovative remodel ideas to help you unleash the magic within your home. Come by our showroom, 3738 Avalon Park E. Blvd, Orlando, Fl 32828 or give us a call at (407) 988-3361.
1. Embrace Open Concepts
Say goodbye to boxed-in rooms that stifle flow and function. Open-concept designs can completely alter your space, making it feel much larger and brighter. A seamless connection between your living, dining, and kitchen areas can be a gamechanger.
Picture hosting your friends and family with ease. You might be cooking in the kitchen while still enjoying conversations in the living room. If you worry about losing defined spaces, consider creative solutions like using strategically placed furniture or decorative screens. For instance, a tall bookshelf can serve as a partition while still allowing light to pass through.
A beautifully designed open concept living room, dining room & kitchen that enhances space & light.
2. Add a Splash of Color
Color is a powerful way to show your personality and refresh your living space. Don’t hesitate to use bold colors! A vibrant accent wall or colorful cabinetry can change the entire feel of a room. In addition, interior/exterior fresh paint is necessary to maintain a clean & fresh look.
If you feel stuck with neutral tones, consider rich navy-blue cabinets for your kitchen or a sunny sunflower yellow for your dining area. You can also play with accessories—think throw pillows, rugs, and artwork that incorporate your chosen color scheme. One study showed that homes with bright, lively colors sold for 10% more than those with dull palettes. Removable wallpaper or peel-and-stick vinyl can offer a creative way to test out your ideas without long-term commitment.
New fresh color gives your home a new look!
3. Step up your style with our flooring
When it comes time to renovate your home, one of the most important decisions is what type of flooring to use. This is not an easy decision to make. Here at Polo Floors, we will assist you in making that decision by explaining the several types of flooring and what makes the most sense for your style and budget. You need to consider not just looks, but also practicality. How will it feel and what will the maintenance of that floor be? Will it stand up to kids, pets, & everyday traffic?
Hardwood looks beautiful, but it can be damaged by moisture & it is easily scratched. It will need to be refinished when needed. Engineered hardwood provides a similar look but cannot be refinished as often. Carpet & laminate are a less expensive option but need a lot of maintenance & care. Tile & LVP/SPC are other options to consider. Tile is hard on feet and will need maintenance keeping grout areas cleaned. LVP/SPC is a popular choice for its minimal maintenance and budget friendly.
No matter what you choose, we are here to assist you. A multifunctional kid’s room highlighting SPC Luxur-V flooring transformed the room with serenity and functionality.
4. Luxuriate in Spa-like Bathrooms
Your bathroom can be transformed into a personal retreat. Consider adding features like a freestanding tub, a walk-in shower with stunning tile work, or even a brand-new vanity that will go perfect with new flooring.
Investing in luxuries like a rainfall showerhead can enhance relaxation significantly. According to industry statistics, properties with updated bathrooms can increase their market value by as much as 20%. To create a calming ambiance, think about soft, adjustable lighting and incorporating natural elements, like stone accents or indoor plants, which promote tranquility.
Create a Haven of Serenity, Renovate Your Bathroom with Style
5. Go Green with Sustainable Choices
Sustainability is a vital consideration in modern remodels. Eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient appliances not only help the planet but can also lead to significant savings on utility bills.
Consider using reclaimed wood, bamboo flooring, or wood panels for your ceiling or walls. Energy-efficient windows or solar panels can significantly increase your home’s value and reduce your carbon footprint. Studies have shown that homes with sustainable features sell for about 5-10% more than comparable homes. Plus, bringing in indoor plants can enhance air quality and create a welcoming environment.
By integrating these panels, any space can transform into a harmonious retreat. They do more than just absorb sound; they serve as visual focal points that enhance the overall design.
6. Enhance Curb Appeal
First impressions matter! Improving your home’s curb appeal is a key part of remodeling. This can include pavers, colorful landscaping, or fresh paint on your front door.
Bright colors can create an inviting welcome, while outdoor lighting can add ambiance for evening gatherings. Even small updates like decorative house numbers or window boxes filled with flowers can impact the overall appearance of your home. A well-kept lawn, new pavers and strategically planted flower beds can significantly increase your property’s attractiveness and set your home apart in the neighborhood.
A welcoming home entrance featuring colorful landscaping, pavers & a fresh coat of paint for the front door.
Your Next Steps to Transformation
Remodeling your home is an exciting journey full of creative possibilities. From flooring to curb-appeal, the best ideas are the ones that match your vision and needs.
As you take on this transformation, maintain your enthusiasm and creativity. The magic of remodeling lies in creating a space that feels uniquely yours. The Marketplace at Avalon Park is thrilled to announce the upcoming arrival of Ferratti’s Artisan Pizza, Focaccia & Pasta, an authentic Italian kitchen rooted in Neapolitan tradition. Opening October 2025 inside the Marketplace food hall, Ferratti’s offers a one-of-a-kind artisan experience featuring woodfired Neapolitan pizzas, slowfermented focaccias, handmade pastas, and indulgent Italian desserts—all crafted with authentic ingredients and old-world technique.
Founded on generations of Italian family tradition, Ferratti’s is more than just a restaurant—it is a slice of Naples brought to life through 48-hour fermented sourdough, a Neapolitan wood-fired oven, and the warm hospitality of owner Daniel Ruvolo.
“At Ferratti’s, we believe great food tells a story,” said Ruvolo. “Every dish we serve reflects our roots— carefully crafted recipes, timehonored techniques, and a passion for bringing people together around the table. We are excited to share a little piece of Italy with Avalon Park.”
Ferratti’s menu showcases personal and family-size wood-fired pizzas
like the Tricolore Classica and Ferratti’s Signature topped with burrata, pistachios, and balsamic glaze. By Jamie Warner
I’m Jamie Warner, a fourth-year UF medical student applying to dermatology this year. I grew up in Orlando, and my fiancé, Daniel Kahli—son of Beat Kahli, founder of Avalon Park—and I are excited to help make sun protection easy where families actually need it. I am the Senior Ambassador and co-founded the Be Skin Smart collegiate program of IMPACT Melanoma at UF. IMPACT Melanoma, a national non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is the nation’s leading non-profit, dedicated to significantly reducing melanoma in the United States and saving lives.
I founded the Be Skin Smart club at UF which reached 5,000+ people in its first year by tabling at 5Ks, sporting events, campus fairs, and health fairs. I’m also currently establishing a Be Skin Smart chapter at UCF in conjunction with the UCF College of Medicine and IMPACT Melanoma.
Why bother? Sun damage causes skin cancer—including melanoma which can be deadly—and it’s the No. 1 driver of premature skin aging. The fix is simple: grab a pump of sunscreen before the pool or courts, and follow a few easy habits:
• Reapply about every 80 minutes, and after swimming or sweating
• Seek shade during peak sun (10 a.m.–2 p.m.)
• Wear sun-safe clothing (wide-brim hat, long-sleeve sun shirt/ UPF fabric)
• Don’t forget UV-protective sunglasses
IMPACT Melanoma, Sofia Haddadin (founder of Sun Smart Youth and a student at Trinity Preparatory School of Florida), and I helped bring this important initiative to the attention of thought leaders at AdventHealth to secure funding for sunscreen dispensers. To date six free sunscreen dispensers are now fully funded: two each at the South Orlando YMCA, the Wayne Densch YMCA, and the AdventHealth for Children West Lakes Early Learning Center. The Be Skin Smart programs initiative allows me to work with undergraduate students and student organizations like Sun Smart Youth to advocate, nurture community awareness, and save lives.
Next up, with support from Avalon Park, we would love to install wall-mounted, reef-safe, sweat-resistant SPF stations across the neighborhood: one at each of the 10 village pools, plus the Dog
Park, Town Park, Live Oak Park, Founders Square, and at Tanja King Memorial Park (by the splash pad, playground/open field, two near the tennis/racquetball courts, and one by the basketball courts). We’ll also add 1–2 portable units for larger community events. Each refill provides ~300–500 applications, and—thanks to Beat Kahli—the Avalon Park facilities team will clean, maintain, and refill the stations so they’re always ready for anything.
Be Skin Smart’s mission is straightforward: educate the public on preventing skin cancer and catching it early. Our neighborhood lost one of its brightest lights with the passing of Nuno. To say he will be missed feels far too small. If you lived here, you knew him. And if you didn’t know him personally, you certainly knew of him. He was the smile that welcomed you into Nuno’s Café, the laughter that carried across the room, the quip that could catch you off guard and leave you grinning the rest of the day.
Nuno could have let his food do all the talking—and truthfully, it would have spoken for itself. His café was a success because the food was wonderful, but anyone who ever sat down there knows that wasn’t the real reason people kept coming back. The real draw was Nuno himself. He poured his spirit into every corner of that place, turning it into more than a restaurant. It became a community living room, a space where friends and neighbors gathered, where strangers became acquaintances, and acquaintances became family.
If you sat at Nuno’s Café long enough, you’d see something magical: the way he floated from table to table, never too busy to pause. Every table always seemed to have an extra seat waiting for him. He’d sit down, add his two cents to whatever conversation was happening, and somehow make everyone feel like they were exactly where they were supposed to be. He reminded us all that breaking bread together is about more than food—it’s about connection.
Outside the café, Nuno was equally devoted to what mattered most: his family. He was a true family man, one who cherished his two children and adored his wife, whom he always playfully called his girlfriend. That
little joke was a window into the way he lived—playful, loving, never taking life too seriously, but always taking relationships seriously. He had learned the balance that so many of us strive for: working hard, building a business, serving a community, but still finding time to be present with the people he loved.
On his days off, you might find him beachside at the condo, soaking in the salt air and sunshine, savoring the simple joys of life. Even then, though, he spent much of his time with people— customers, friends, neighbors. Nuno never drew a hard line between those groups, because in his world, once you crossed his path, you were family.
What made Nuno remarkable wasn’t just his generosity or his success. It was his humility. He was never one to brag, but he was never afraid to share what he thought either. Opinionated, yes—but in the best way. His honesty was wrapped in humor, delivered with a twinkle in his eye, and it drew people closer rather than pushing them away.
Nuno’s legacy is more than a café, more than the meals he served, and even more than the laughter he sparked. His legacy is the community he built—one conversation, one smile, one shared plate at a time. He showed us that neighborhoods thrive when people choose kindness, when they show up for each other, when they make space at the table.
We will miss him deeply, but we carry him with us. In every shared meal, every laugh among friends, every moment of connection—we’ll hear his voice, feel his presence, and remember how lucky we were to know him.

Heading into the new school year is always a mix of emotions — excited, nervous, hopeful, anxious, etc. – all swirling as both teachers and students return to school. The 2025-2026 school year will be my tenth at Quest Kids Academy, where we teach children and teens with autism and other developmental disabilities how to maximize their potential — in the classroom and in life. Each year brings with it the optimism of what’s possible for our children if given the right support and opportunities and to build off of the successes of the previous year.
The 2025-2026 school year is no different as we look ahead to our new state-of-the art education and therapy campus. Quest Kids Academy has awaited a new building for over five years and are thrilled that students, clients and families now have a place to call home. Quest Kids Orlando, in the heart of Downtown Orlando, will be an innovative new campus for Quest Kids Academy and Quest Kids Therapy, and we just cannot wait!
The rate of autism diagnoses is growing at a rapid rate, with 1 in 31 children now affected. As these students transition back into the classroom, a solid game-plan is needed to help each of them maximize their potential for independence. I’ve been in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) since 2008, and have had the opportunity to serve hundreds of students and clients during that time. The one common denominator is that each and every student is unique and on their own individual path toward the future. Yes, we serve students with developmental disabilities, many of whom are on the autism spectrum, but their strengths and weaknesses vary just as much as their personalities. We are tasked with adjusting to each student’s needs in order to help them be successful on an individual level, and maximizing their potential for independence is a critical part of our plan for back-to-school success.
As we return to the classroom, many families and teachers might wonder how the “summer slide” (as the regression
in skills that many students experience over the summer is commonly known) might affect students. Some students will be starting new schools and most will return with new faces on the teaching team. The common thread is that there are a lot of unknowns going into a new year. At Quest Kids Academy, we embrace these unknowns with an open heart and open mind and view them as opportunities for both students and teachers to learn from each other and establish solid routines for success. Our teachers and support team know what it takes to help a students feel and be successful, and we are hard at work to ensure a great year ahead.
While we await the opening of our new campus early in 2026, we will continue to provide a safe, nurturing environment where every student can thrive and become their best self. We can’t wait to welcome our students and their families back to our halls and classrooms. We wish ALL students a fruitful and productive 2025-2026 school year!
College classes are underway, and our 2025 Avalon Park Foundation Scholarship recipients are beginning their next adventure!
We’re proud to honor their hard work and community spirit and to cheer them on towards future success as they begin their college journeys!

The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC—The Reliable One) has been recognized by Escalent, a leading advisory firm specializing in human behavior and data analytics, as a “Most Trusted Brand” among U.S. energy providers for 2025. With a score of 760, OUC ranked 7% above the industry average according to the 2025 Cogent Syndicated Utility Trusted Brand & Customer Engagement™ Residential study.
“We are honored to be recognized as a Most Trusted Brand among U.S. energy providers,” said Linda Ferrone, OUC Chief Customer & Marketing Officer. “At OUC, our customers have trusted us for more than 100 years and this recognition reflects the confidence they place in us and validates the work we do every day to deliver reliable, sustainable energy and exceptional service.”
OUC first appeared on the “Most Trusted Brand” index in 2018 and earned the top score among U.S. electric utilities in the 2020, 2022 and 2023 surveys.
“The utility value proposition continues to evolve,” said Suzanne Haggerty, Director of Syndicated Research with the Energy team at Escalent. “It’s not just about the bill amount. Value encompasses improved reliability, opportunities for savings, better customer service, ease of doing business, and the utility’s active role in supporting the community, delivering a broader sense of fairness and value that customers recognize and appreciate.”
This recognition comes on the heels of OUC being named the most reliable electric utility in Florida, based on 2024 data reported to the Florida Public Service Commission. That designation reflects OUC’s commitment to grid hardening, proactive infrastructure upgrades, and faster outage restoration — key drivers of both reliability and customer trust.
OUC also supports customers through a range of affordability programs and tools. These include rebates, energy-saving tips, and flexible payment options like Budget Billing and the prepaid Power Pass program. For customers facing financial hardship, Project CARE, administered by Heart of Florida United Way, offers utility payment assistance through a dedicated case manager.
In addition, OUC works with community partners to promote awareness of broader assistance programs such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and the Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP), which helps eligible seniors cover energy costs during emergencies.
To learn more about how OUC connects with customers and the community, visit OUC.com/ connected or explore assistance options at OUC.com/ assistance.
OUC – The Reliable One is celebrating the latest participants of its Pre-Apprenticeship Program. The free four-month course teaches community members about the intricacies of the construction industry, including the basics of carpentry, electricity and plumbing. Students also take part in mock interview and resume sessions so that they’re better equipped to find a job. On Aug. 13, OUC held a graduation ceremony for 19 people who completed the class. The program is part of the utility’s Empowerment Zone, which fosters economic prosperity for people in the 32805 zip code.
