The creation of a positive reading identity is integral to a child’s sustained investment in reading outside the classroom, and therefore long term reading success. Mutual enjoyment of reading material among peers was important for young readers, yet children with dyslexia and other reading difficulties are often excluded from this reading culture. Since graphic novels are routinely enjoyed by a wide variety of readers despite reading level, they provide critical opportunities for dyslexic children to foster a love of story with peers, crucial if they are to persevere through reading difficulties wrought by their learning disability. Further research could directly investigate relationships between young dyslexic readers, an identity shaped by reading, and rate of reading progression.
