1. Curriculum Instruction and Learning Activities Schedule: The library has both a fixed and flexible schedule, which means that students throughout the elementary have a regularly scheduled library time, but that the library is available for students to drop in at any time and for teachers who want to schedule additional visits. I meet with 21 groups per week, 45 minutes each. All students and teachers are encouraged to use the library at any time. Library curriculum: Library time is more than just a story time, just as the library is more than a warehouse for books. Every class visit is planned to make sure all children learn a variety of skills in order to become lifelong readers and learners. The American Association of Librarians has published Standards for the 21st Century Learner. The following tenets underlie library instruction and form the core of the program: • Reading is a window to the world. • Inquiry provides a framework for learning. • Ethical behavior in the use of information must be taught. • Technological skills are crucial to future employment needs. Library classes are designed to teach skills and tools to help students • Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. • Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.
!
• Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society. • Pursue personal and aesthetic growth.
