Publisher/Editor’s Note

Some changes have already taken place at L’Amour Diversity.

Solde Rothmanay who was our acting Editor in Chief, had to step down due to real life. I want to thank Solde from the bottom of my heart for all the hard work on the first issue of L’Amour Diversity.

She had never done before taking on such a project, learned InDesign and just did an amazing job. I am very sad to see her go and wish her nothing but the best. I know I will see her again as she is married to my son Kris on September 26, 2015.

I am excited to say that L’Amour Diversity Magazine came out with a bang. We had a lot of reader feedback and the public has spoken and loved it. They loved all the different stories and even a few readers who said they usually look at the pictures, read Diversity from cover to cover.

I am beyond proud of all the staff of L’Amour Diversity. Some have gone, some have stayed and we have added a few new staff members. Jena Adder came on board to do graphics and layout,

and I look forward to working with her. I will be taking on the role of Publisher/Editor in Chief with Sita Writer and Cacilia McMastersSolar as Co-Editors.

An Insight into Allie Hamilton and Unique Visions

By Ava Jhamin When L’Amour Productions did Mr. & Miss Model International last year, Allie Hamilton (allieangelica) was one of our first sponsors. Since then we have formed a working relationship with her company Unique Visions. We have one amazing show under our belt with our collaboration, which was Mesh Head and Shay La La, and was not only very comfortable but she was my yin and I her yang.

I sat down with Allie, wine in hand and just had a true girl talk session and picked her brain. Of course as redundant as it is, we all get asked this first question. Tell me Allie, AJ: How did you find SL? AH: Actually a comment about SL came up in a discussion during a Girls Night Out. So I decided to check it out, and the adventure started there.

AJ: I do always ask about how you came to SL because I find that everyone has a story to tell or something unique why they ended up on Second Life.

trust. I initially assumed everyone operated with the same work ethic, but found out quickly that is not the case.

I had to take that and turn it into a positive lesson learned. Many good people stepped up to support me, forming strong business connections, and I now rely on them for advice.

AJ: What are the satisfaction in running an SL business?

AH: Running a business in SL not only gives me a sense of purpose in the virtual world, but I get to fulfill a passion of my own tapping into my creative side.

I get enjoyment forming business relationships and seeing how our visions can come together.

AJ: I love that and agree a lot as one that has done so with you Allie.

How do you market your brand?

AH: Initially the marketing of my brand was through word of mouth.

top models asked to work with me.

Many have returned because they had so much fun the first time.

Designers booked for second fashion shows, as done recently for Mesh Head, MC designer. I started sponsoring modeling challenges, which has led to additional business ventures.

AJ: What do you want potential clients to know about you?

AH: I enjoy what I do, bringing attention to large and small amazing designers. I always have the designer’s best interest at heart, very easy to work with, and I like to keep the experience fun and not cumbersome.

AJ: What do you see in the future for Unique Visions?

AH: I see Unique Visions being a “go to” for designers. Arranging unique outfits from their current line or bring a fresh look to older items to increase store foot traffic.

I Am, Who I Am!!!

With Ava & Crista

By Ava Jhamin As the second part of my series “I Am, Who I Am!!!” I had the honor of meeting with Chillicalifornia aka Crista Wellens. When I first met Crista it was instant like and chemistry. Like some, I had heard stories that she was a he, and once again for me personally I didn’t care. I like this person.

She was smart, articulate, styled like a mofo and was just a sweet soul. So when it went public I jumped on the chance to do a story on Crista. She agreed, and sat down with me and speak candidly on this subject.

Again I am doing this series for people to understand that not all are dirty dogs are playing another gender for any other reason then they want to. They aren’t hurting anyone, and I find that in 99.9% of the cases they are amazing good human beings.

Just like with Ado in my first story on “I Am, Who I am!!!” I sat down with Crista to find out first hand her reasons for being a young man in real life portraying a woman on Second Life. ...continued next page

AJ: What brought Crista to Second Life?

CW: Crista was created out of boredom, in all honesty. I was browsing YouTube one day and I saw an advertisement about Second Life (SL). I clicked it, created an avatar and ever since the first day, I thought it was SO cool. I mean hell, I could fly!

Then I started exploring more and more, had different careers and here I am!

AJ: I know Crista that all people come to SL wanting to get something out of it to best suit who they are. Can you share with us what that was when you created Crista Wellens?

CW: You may laugh, but all the actions that I did were more or less aiming to getting an income so I can buy clothes. I have a passion for fashion in both worlds so everything I did was to eventually reach the fashion world. When I found out exactly where this world was, I knew that’s what I wanted to do in SL and I worked hard for it. I could say that what I wanted to get out of SL was experience in fashion.

I have met so many beautiful people and a lot of them are actually linked to fashion in real life. I learned a lot from both

worlds and I can proudly say SL actually gave me some good lessons about how to react to some real life situations.

AJ: What was it about being a woman on SL that made you go that route instead of the obvious?

CW: It’s quite simple, actually.

I already experience male fashion in real life on a daily basis and since I’m not a cross dresser, I found myself a way to experience

female fashion as well. I wanted to explore this field too because, after all, women were the first ones who were totally into being fashionable. That’s why Crista is a Chica, not a Chico.

AJ: Was it something that you wanted to keep secret and if so why? If not please explain for our Diversity readers?

CW: I would say no. The circumstances led to that. People used to talk around me and I

saw some hateful conversations towards people in my situation.

I got scared on the spot and decided not to tell anybody about my real life gender, scared that it would affect my evolution as a SL fashion participant. Eventually I came to realize it wasn’t like that, but up until my big “come out” I was scared it would affect my participation in the fashion industry, which I have craved so much and worked for. AJ: I would for sure say yes to that one Crista. I look at it like this: this isn’t real life, it is SL, and as such you can be anything you choose. I think sometimes too

CW: Thank you Ava yes. I feel also that most of my close friends in the fashion world know who I am behind the avi. I am not ashamed of who I am in my real life, but in this SL world, it seems a lot of people play the opposite gender of who they are in real life and for various reasons we shouldn’t be judged, it is after all a SL—we can be a furry, an elf etc...what does it matter who we are in real life? I, myself, can style a male avi

came from a dear friend. It was only ONE person who reacted badly, though. The rest were all supportive. Every relative, every friend...they all embraced the real me. And then there are the other people whose responses were simple and put a gigantic smile on my face: “Ok, you’re a man. So?”. I have my friends and I am glad to say I did make some new friends after being honest.

I’m extremely glad that society reacted this way, and I believe that this is not a sole case. I would like to also give a message to all the people who portray a different gender on SL than what they are in real life:

go ahead and tell someone.

Tell your friends, if not everyone.

You don’t have to do anything publicly, but if you tell someone, you will feel much better.

The chances are almost certain that they will embrace you. Your genitals have nothing to do with your personality.

AJ: Have you seen changes in the general population on SL regarding this matter?

CW: I can say I’m rather young in SL, not to mention in the virtual fashion industry. I have observed people’s reaction to this matter as much as I could and I came to discover it all depends on what kind of person that resident really is. Eventually it’s not your real life gender that upsets people, it’s the lying. However, if you are a good person, people are accepting and embracing, or they simply don’t care, because before you even told them they discovered something more than your genitals: your soul. All in all, I can’t really answer this question, but in my perspective it’s always been simple: unless you’re a bad person or a compulsive liar, people will embrace you as what you are.

AJ: I know that a lot of the competitions on the grid voice verify. Do you feel that is fair and please explain either way?

CW: You know, I’ve always found voice interviews very interesting.

It gives you a chance to discover that person behind the avatar just a little bit more. However, I don’t think it’s fair that these voice interviews exist in order to check if those persons are indeed real life males or females.

I will use some harsh words but your modeling abilities are not influenced by whether you have a penis or a vagina. You style with your brain and...your hands. In my opinion gender has nothing to do with fashion. I would also like to note Anderja Pejic, a real life TOP model who was born male, but models as a female.

Jean-Paul Gaultier named her his inspiration. Because he sees further than the penis.

AJ: I know with L’Amour we didn’t care what you are behind the screen. Do you find it a wall so to speak with doing what you want to do on the grid Crista.

CW: I did. There were many occasions when I wanted to join pageants I KNEW I could do an ...continued next page

excellent job in, but I couldn’t because of that stupid “You must be a real life female” rule.

I asked a pageant owner why.

The response was a shocking and stupid as I expected it to be.

I was told that some years ago, winners of big pageants would do radio shows and all, and they couldn’t risk them having a deep male voice. My arguments are simple: I know tons of females whose voices are deeper than mine. People need to listen to more female-sung Jazz. Secondly, how does that influence the public opinion? How does someone taking a challenge and controlling an avatar whose gender they don’t have and challenging themselves to explore the body, the movements, the rules and restrictions of another gender, yet still winning a huge pageant give a bad image to that pageant? I think that’s admirable.

In my concern, I just think it’s a matter of hypocrisy.

AJ: Do you think a lot of amazing models will be left out of competitions due to the voice verifying?

CW: Indeed. There is an unimaginably big number of models or simple avatars in SL who have a different gender in real life yet still look like gods and goddesses of fashion.

These people are left out of competitions, and have a harder time going to the top. Yet they still do it, the hard way too. And here comes a hypocrite contest owner who says “you can’t join this or win this, you are not pageant material because you have a penis in real life”. This is disturbing and must stop. People are wasting talent.

AJ: If you could tell our readers a misunderstanding of this whole subject what would it be?

CW: Only one? Hm...the misbelief that if the real life and the Second Life genitals don’t match, the personality changes in any kind of way. Not the case. We’re the same. We’ve all been the same persons before you knew we don’t have the same gender as our avatars and we will keep being the same persons. We just chose to trust you.

What is in a “Gender” Is It Really A Choice?

By Ava Jhamin With the onset of Caitlyn Jenner and all the talk on Transgenders, I was fortunate enough almost five years ago to meet Kaleb Avedon.

We became fast friends and would talk for hours about the bible and about his wishes as a woman to be man. Kaleb is not a lesbian. For me Kaleb was born into the wrong body.

He knew from as young as three years old that he was different, but didn’t know how to express or deal with it. I know a lot of what I have learned about this very controversial subject was because of Kaleb. I think it was me asking the questions and getting very direct answers that I learned what I know now, and want to passed this on to others.

For readers who may be confused on what a transgender means: Transgender people experience a mismatch between their gender

identity or gender expression and their assigned sex.

Many transgender people experience a period of identity development that includes gaining better understanding their self-image, selfreflection, and self-expression. The degree to which individuals feel genuine, authentic, and comfortable within their external appearance and accept their genuine identity.

Being transgender is independent of sexual orientation; transgender people may identify as heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual, etc., or may consider conventional sexual orientation labels inadequate or inapplicable.

I sat down with Kaleb and his now real life girlfriend and wife in Second Life Ephany Royce. Ephany as with many of Kaleb’s girlfriends his whole life is a heterosexual women.

AJ: What brought Kaleb to Second Life?

KA: I came to SL for a girlfriend I had in real life. Her name is Michele. I was stupidly in love with her, and our relationship was not doing very well.

She had found SL and asked me to come along. I felt I needed to do anything I could to salvage our relationship so I created my first avatar in SL; Kaleb Avedon. Despite my best attempts, we didn’t work out and she found someone through SL. AJ: Can you tell the reason that Kaleb was born on SL? KA: I can tell you exactly what I was thinking when I made Kaleb. I was thinking I was tired of being everything everyone else wanted me to be in real life. I wanted, for the first time, to be me—to be what I always wanted to be.

I decided, if SL was everything I heard it was, a world were I could do anything I could do in real life only better, then I would be what I always secretly desired to be and felt I was; a man. And so I created Kaleb, and from the moment I entered SL, it always felt good. It felt right!

AJ: What was it about being a man on SL that made you go that route instead of the obvious for people?

KA: I felt tired of being everything everyone else wanted me to be. I took a chance on being what and who I felt I was inside, for once. Once I had that male body, once I became that avatar, I felt free! I felt complete for the first time in my life. There was no way I could go back on my decision of being a man in SL. It would be like a free slave choosing slavery again. It just would never happen.

Being Kaleb in SL made me realize it was not an extension of myself, it had truly turned out to be me, my reflection and what I knew I should have been all along. I always loved the song “Reflection” From the movie Mulan because I identified with the lyrics on so many levels, especially the ones which read “When will my reflection show, who I am inside?”. Kaleb Avedon was finally that reflection that showed who I truly was inside.

AJ: Many of our readers will know what transgender is. For those who don’t, can you tell us, Kaleb? And also where you fit in this world?

KA: That is an interesting question because, honestly, for me it was hard at first to see myself as a transgender.

It was actually through SL, and after probably three years of being Kaleb Avedon that one day it hit me like driving into a brick wall at 200 mph. I am not a lesbian! OMG!!! I AM TRANSGENDER!!!!! My whole world shook LOL. That realization at 37 years old was tough, but it made so much more sense to me than anything else I thought I was before. How I felt like a boy when I was a child, all my actions, my thoughts, my love relationships with mostly straight women, fit perfectly with what a transgender was. I truly am a man trapped in a woman’s body,

which is what a transgender person is. It is being of one sex physically, but mind and soul of another.

This realization was not easy to digest.

I asked my psychologist to help me deal with it and right off the bat she said to me, “You are not transgender.” I was stunned. “Why?” I asked perplexed.

“Because you are not willing to go through the sex change operation.”

That really got me thinking. Part of me agreed with her, but part of me did not.

conversations with an amazing woman, who is my SL and RL partner. I realized that labels are sometimes so restricting.

I am not gay, nor transgender, but if I must label myself as something I will call it what my partner Ephany Royce calls it: Bigender.

There are people like Caitlyn Jenner and Chaz Bono who are willing to complete the process of becoming the sex that they feel inside. I admire those people.

It takes a lot of courage, physical and psychological preparation to do so, not to mention the monetary aspect, which is a blessing in itself, for the surgeries are very expensive. I, on the other hand, even though I feel like a transgender, am not willing to go the distance people like those celebrities did, for many reasons.

Those reasons are why I consider myself bigender; for example: The physical mutilation and pain are too much of a sacrifice for the psychological “feel good” factor most people who do the change are seeking. Basically, my train of thought is, why have a penis when it is not real? At the end of the day, it is really all psychological, and SL helped me figure that out. In SL I have the body I wish and desire. I have lived as a man in SL and people have treated me like a man. So the aspect of fulfilling that need has been met through SL. I made it my mission to surround myself with people who understand I am a man,

and those who don’t, I discard. I am true to myself in SL, and it has helped me to be true to myself in RL. It has taken six years, and it is still ongoing.

The changes I have made in my life from the moment I realized I was transgender, have been monumental, just as monumental as any transgender who has gone through the sex change operation. But my changes have been psychological. After realizing I am a man, I let myself be a man.

Rediscovering myself is an ongoing process, and I am planning to keep doing it. I pretty much like to live my life by Socrates quote, “An unexamined life is not worth living.” At the end of the day we all do what is necessary to feel good about who we are. There is no right or wrong in this, unless of course you are an ax murderer.

All the accomplishments I have achieved in my female form are not things I am willing to lightly give up. I fought very hard for them and sacrificed a lot. They have shaped me into the person I am today. I have a reputation I worked very hard to establish and I am proud of it, along with all of my academic and career achievements. I did those as a female, and I am very proud of them and of me as well. It wasn’t easy but it was satisfying. I am not ashamed my female side did them. Even though it has been a long process of accepting my female form, I have learned to celebrate her. She is pretty awesome!

My parents and family, although they are very loving, I believe, would not be able to cope. I realize it is unfair to be thinking for them, but coming from a Hispanic, religious background I can guarantee it will be something that will not be easy to swallow, especially for my parents, which are the people I care about the most. They had a hard time dealing with the fact I was “gay” and are now coming to terms with it, even if I have never thought of myself as gay.

I think telling them I am transgender will devastate them. They are in their 60s now and mind you, I am lucky they are very healthy. I want what is left of our time together on this earth to be joyful and loving. They don’t need to know, and I have no need in me to tell them. I really don’t. I feel I have achieved enough psychologically for me to feel good with it, and at peace.

And just to be clear, I am not saying that people who go through the change are wrong to do so. It’s just not something I feel comfortable doing. It is not my path. But basically, even though I wish I was born in a male body, and even though I wish I had a male body, I cannot change my body into that of a man. I believe that is not my journey.

AJ: Was it something that you wanted to keep secret and if so why?

If not please explain more for our Diversity readers?

KA: I absolutely wanted to keep it a secret, but only in RL not SL. When you are behind an avatar it takes away all restrictions, but not in RL. Being transgender is not something I go out and advertise to the world in RL, just like a straight person does not go out into the world and advertise they are straight. That is nobody’s business but mine. And also, I think even though people like Caitlyn Jenner are educating others about it, transgender is still a concept that needs to be grasped.

We are not there yet.

As I proceed into having a personal relationship with anyone on any level, I do flat out say I am transgender, but if it is not a personal relationship (like for example at work) I am not afraid of just plain saying I am gay, especially now that gay people have equal rights.

But that is if it comes up in the topic of conversation or someone asks, which honestly is not a very common thing. I don’t like to advertise my gender views to anyone, so actually doing so in public now is a big step for me, because before I would not say anything and it bugged the heck out of me.

AJ: Do you feel any negativity toward you being of the opposite gender you are in RL? KA: I am coming to terms with my female body now. I hated it for such a long time. It has taken me a while to get here, and I am feeling much at peace with it now. I would not go through the sex change operation, as I have stated before, however there are things I would consider doing that would make me feel better. I would do the top surgery and remove my breasts and I would consider doing an oblation, which would stop the menstrual cycle, without affecting the hormone production a female body needs. This would give me more energy without the PMS LOL. I think having the female body God gave me in this life was meant to be a journey to understand things perhaps in other lives I didn’t get. I can tell you one thing for sure, it has given me an advantage over most men. I see it this way, because I do know and understand all the changes a woman goes through physically and emotionally, I have empathy for women no physical man could ever have. To be honest, I even see it as being a perfect Yin and Yang symbol, being the perfect balance of both female and male, which truly, all

of us should possess regardless of sex and gender orientation. It has helped to approach situations, not as a man or woman would approach them, but as a human being would.

AJ: Have you seen changes in the general population on SL regarding transgender or even men as women and women as men?

KA: I think men being women and women being men is not something new in SL. It pretty much has been going on since the beginning, but not necessarily for the same reasons I did it. Others may do it for kink, treachery, fun, role play, or even simple curiosity. Since I do not frequent places typically considered LGBT friendly, I don’t have a lot of personal experience meeting those who have similar reasons to mine.

Generally I spend my time in SL buying clothes, homes, furniture, and singing. My SL brother Shaun is female to male and open about it. He is actually going through the process of changing his body from female to male, and it is astonishing to witness. I am very proud of him for doing so, and in a way I live vicariously through him. AJ: Are you pretty forthright with people in SL about who Kaleb is?

KA: In SL I am very up front about who and what I am. Anyone who has a personal relationship with me, whether it’s friendship or something more, knows as it is one of the first things I say to them. It is even in my profile in my First Life tab. I hate lying. I simply hate it! I hate lying to someone, and I hate being lied to. I even hate lying to myself. And I would hate it, if I start a relationship on any level with someone and they tell me they are female and turn out to be male or vice versa. That is just wrong.

AJ: If you could tell our readers a misunderstand of this whole subject what would it be?

KA: I see how everyone wants to make it a religious issue and it is truly not. I know religious groups have a lot to say on the subject, but at the end of the day it really does not matter because it is not about religion’s rights or wrongs, it is about civil rights; it is about just being civilized with each other.

At the end of the day the biggest battle is truly fought by the people who are LBGT, not the ones judging them. The soul searching, the questioning, the validation one goes through to accept himself/herself as a human being is

horrendous and punishment enough if it is indeed a “sin”, which I believe whole heatedly it is not.

We are all in a journey through life to be... to just BE, and find who we were meant to BE regardless of whether you are straight or not. Let’s respect that. Like Plato once said, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” And that battle, ironically enough, is the eternal conflict of who we truly are in a society filled with inadequate labels designed to force our uniqueness into superficial categories.

She started designing here almost immediately. “I have been designing and creating professionally in RL for more than 20 years and designing in SL for four years. Like any RL business, there are challenges to running a business in SL. “For us, the main challenge is time and money concerning how many different bodies to design for. Designing in SL has gotten more sophisticated and in order to create outstanding designs you really need a good amount of graphic art skills and an eye for fashion designs.”

Sugarfariy2 is positive in general and gets a great deal of satisfaction from designing in SL and running a business here. “Seeing people appreciate your work and helping SL users enjoy their SL makes me happy. The way I see it, SL is all about the imagination and our artwork is like sharing a part of our inner self. In some ways though, SL is more difficult now because we can’t support or sell to everyone like we

use to do because we are not supplied with the things we require for all these different mesh body users.”

As we all know RL sometimes spills over into SL and for those of us that stay, the benefits have to outweigh the negatives.

“My RL satisfaction in regard to designing in SL is that it’s simply my job, my art…and it’s learning something new with the latest creation. Simply put, designing here continues to give me purpose. Of course, the RL challenge is always time and money.

It wasn’t given to the first citizens, everything was made prim by prim. Mesh has brought some of the most amazing textures and items to our world and the technical people at Linden Labs are always introducing new ways to amaze us.

I have had the great pleasure to meet one of the best vehicle builders in SL. Id like to introduce you to Tray Bikergrrl, along with his wife, Kyleah, they run and operate Bad Cat Customs. They have been around for five years and If you haven’t heard about them, well now you will not forget them.

Their builds are one of a kind, spectacular.

Tray, Ky and I visited one day and I pried into what makes Bad Cat Customs so wonderful. Besides their down to earth customer service, they strive to do their best to make a good product for a fair price, and they enjoy working with the customers.

By Cacilia McMasters-Solar I’m always looking for new designers or stores that I think are different and exciting in Second Life (SL) along with bringing something special to enhance our experience within this virtual world. I decided that TRACEI is one of those special jewelry stores that is out of the ordinary. I had a sit down with MrForever, known also as Tracei Moore, and the meeting was enlightening and a true pleasure.

Tracei has been in SL since 2012, and together with his fiancé Kerasia Hexicola, they have opened TRACEI. They both enjoy fashion and take great pride in choosing current, ontrend items for their store. All pieces at this fashion forward boutique are original mesh so these are truly inspirational designs, found nowhere else in SL. It is the possibility of being able to create anything he wants that inspires and keeps him striving for more.

The designs you can find at TRACEI are seasonal, contemporary, eclectic designs.

Tracei’s passion is to keep on top of current trends and then try to incorporate them into the pieces he offers in the store. Currently his favorite piece is “The Petite Malle Clutch” that was recently released and is a very complex and a real statement piece.

All the pieces at this exclusive store come in different metals, gem and color choices and all have a resizer hud. They like to keep up to date on the colors that are presently en vogue in real life and often include several that are relevant to the current season.

TRACEI offers unisex items and is at present interested in focusing on mens’ designs! This is very exciting considering unisex and male items are limited within SL. Tracei doesn’t currently make custom pieces as he feels it is difficult to capture exactly what another person’s vision is, however he endeavors to create a wide range of pieces in order to inspire all of his clientele.

Vampire orVamp?

The Allure of The PinkVampire Solo

By Rhiannon Colclough October is the month, in some cultures, to celebrate Halloween. It’s a holiday full of the lore, of fear and chaos, from werewolves and vampires to ghosts and goblins. You may even encounter a few running around your neighborhood on October 31. But I doubt you have seen a pink vampire, one that wasn’t named for her desire for blood, and who channels Marilyn Monroe so effortlessly. Then again, ThePinkVampire Solo is hardly an ordinary avatar, much less an ordinary vampire!

Pink, as most people at her concerts call her, was bestowed the nickname of ThePinkVampire by friends, because she is a night owl and loves pink...and not because she plays a vampire in SL! She may play the part of a vamp on stage, but this woman won’t be biting your neck anytime soon—she’s too busy singing in a sultry voice, her musical waves tickling your ear canals and convincing you that the second coming of Marilyn has occurred.

Music has been in Pink’s life from a very early age. It started as early as three years old, when Pink sang a third part harmony while her mom and aunt were practicing a duet on piano. She was always surrounded by music, as there was tremendous musical talent on both sides of her family, she adds.

Music also drew her into SL. She came to SL in 2006 when she read an article in a trade magazine. She explored many musical possibilities, but a steep learning curve to learn how to do what she wanted to do caused many starts and stops until she figured out how to extend her real life studio environment into SL. Adapting the persona to SL is not one of the things Pink was willing to do, however. Even though she comes across as a sex kitten, with a sexy monkey lounge sound to her style of music choices and singing, and a curvy, glamorous, platinum blonde avatar with pink lips that issue giggles frequently, she is nobody’s bimbo.

Those who know her describe her as intelligent, as sharp in business as she is talented in music. She also doesn’t let her avatar deviate at all from the real life person behind the blonde.

So she did what any good 21st century citizen of the world does: she Googled for any pieces of info she could find. After a few years, she says, she figured it out. Although she claims that when she finally figured it all out, it was probably an hour before her first SL show.

As she put it, she was able to find the right qualifications. When I work professionally I am a bit spoiled. I have a pool of top talent from all

over the world but locally, it’s slim pickings. I am a vocal composer, producer and recording talent, I’m so not limited geographically via the fact that my work is studio based. Obviously SL required a bit of learning and adapting, but the rewards for Pink have been tremendous.

Living our virtual extensions of ourselves is really amazing, just as in RL. Looking good helps me relax and focus more on my craft.

I’m a girly girl, in RL as well as SL, I enjoy primping. I find it the most relaxing activity in SL for me, to work on outfits. ...continued next page

I will say that who I am in SL is very much who I am in RL. I have never been the type who can create a different character. Just as in RL, I can’t bring myself to be a brunette, so I cant do it in SL either. Even though I have the perfect body in SL, I still can’t walk around naked in my own house! I don’t do that in RL! I’m also not a fan of mesh.

As she says, “I want my clothes to fit my body. I don’t wear boxes or moulded sculptures, and I LOVE my physics—I want my clothes

to obey my body, not the other way around.”

She further states, “In SL where you can have a beautiful shape, why in the world would anyone want to erase that? Why would you forego your unique shape for the sake of a clearer pattern on your dress, Just makes me crazy.”

Other than that, her beliefs are pretty much the same in SL as in RL. She thinks it’s foolish to not use all

tools at one’s disposal, including prerecorded tracks. However, she does not think a singer can be made. One is either born with the talent or not.

She is not fond of calling her voice an instrument, although she does concede that one must always practice too in order to develop the voice.

She also believes that it’s more than talent and practice to get to one’s goals. She futher states, “The one thing that amazes me is you need three basic things: ability, character and commitment. It’s hard enough to find two of those, But you must have all three to be successful.

Kiki’s Burlesque

By Traveller35 The term burlesque means a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects. The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which in turn is derived from the Italian burla– a joke, ridicule or mockery. Originally based in Europe, it transferred easily to America along with a large intake of European migrants, who wanted a taste of home in the land of the free.

American burlesque shows were originally an offshoot of Victorian burlesque. The English genre had been successfully staged in New York from the 1840s, and it was popularised by a visiting British burlesque troupe, Lydia Thompson and the “British Blondes”, beginning in 1868.

New York burlesque shows soon incorporated elements and the structure of the popular Minstrel shows, which consisted of three parts: first, songs and ribald comic sketches by low comedians; second,

assorted artists and male acts, such as acrobats, magicians and solo singers; and third, chorus numbers and sometimes a burlesque in the English style on politics or a current play. The entertainment was usually concluded by an exotic dancer or a wrestling or boxing match.

While burlesque went out of fashion in England towards the end of the 19th century, to be replaced

by Edwardian Musical comedy, the American style of burlesque flourished, but with increasing focus on female nudity. Exotic “cooch” dances were brought in, ostensibly Syrian in origin.

The entertainments were given in clubs and cabarets, as well as music halls and theatres. By the early 20th century, there were two national circuits of burlesque shows competing with the vaudeville circuit, as well as resident companies in New York, such as Minsky’s at the Winter Garden. So it should be no surprise to anyone that when Burlesque arrived in Second Life, it arrived with a bang with the opening in January 2013 of KiKi’s House of Burlesque & Dance—the creative idea of the stunning KiiKiiDoll, the enigmatic and creative leader of a stunning troupe of dancers and creators second to none in Second Life.

With their original and impressive designs and wonderful music, a perfect mix of sex and style makes Kiki’s Burlesque unmatched.

I asked Kiki what drove her to create such a wonderful place. She replied that her love of fashion and music drove her to want to create something sexy, fun and exciting, but visually stunning. She chose carefully and came up with a troupe that has no equal in Second Life.

I do and gives me the strength to perform like I do, showing a loving side all the dancers have.

I asked the stunning Lille Orfran why she danced and what inspired her love of the arts especially, dance. She said, “It was because it’s a form of expression to me. In real life I did ballet for years, well into my adult years, and the love my dearest friend Kiki.” She went on to say, “We met years ago and have been dancing together ever since.”

Another dancer, Dani, said about Kikis “I am the manager there and I love our shows. We are all pretty much given free creative vision each month within her theme.”

Lilie Phenomena also explained to me, “Kiki has taught me a lot about dancing, and I have taught her that it’s ok to be goofy.” Lille is one of the very top SL dancers. Stunningly beautiful she is a legend and this shows in all she that does. She adds, “My love Dennis inspires all that

It’s wonderful to see each of the girls interpretation musically and theatrically through dance create a dance and set to fit in the theme.

Model’s Workshop A Landmark In Modeling

By Ava Jhamin I am honored to be making a series of stories for L’Amour Diversity with the team from Model’s Workshop. I met with Monica Balut, Founder of Model’s Workshop, who with Suki Rexen, Owner & CEO, and Jena Adder, COO, run one of the best organizations out there for new and old models alike.

For our readers to know, the Model’s Workshop is a group dedicated to the ongoing professional development of SL fashion models. Through the effort of its members, the group provides free workshops, projects, contests, networking and other experiences that fit its mission.

I spoke with the three ladies behind Model’s Workshop starting with Monica Balut.

We got comfortable and started in on the interview.

AJ: The cliché question, what brought you to SL?

MB: I admit I’m addicted to learning. In fact my personal motto is “Life’s not worth living unless I can learn something new each day.” I’m constantly amazed and intrigued by what I don’t know and the amazing skills that others possess. I can spend my days totally absorbed in learning something new.

I discovered SL in February 2007.

I’ve always been interested in computers and was intrigued by the possibilities of a virtual world. I immediately saw the potential for exploring and learning.

I spent much of the first year just learning everything I could about all aspects of SL. Early in my second year, I discovered the SL fashion industry. Since my RL ...continued next page

training and career had nothing to do with the arts, I saw this as a way to develop my latent artistic interests.

AJ: I know that Model’s Workshop has been around since the dawn of SL. What have you seen changed in SL, Monica, in a positive way?

AJ: Monica have there been changes in SL in a negative way, if any?

MB: SL has become more commercialized. The excitement of the newness of it has worn off for me.

MB: I assume you’re asking about changes in SL in general. For the most part, SL just gets better all the

time. It works a lot more smoothly and stably than it did when I first started. People take “Windlight” for granted now, but it was a MAJOR positive change, particularly to SL photography. Animations have also gotten a lot better. A model now can look quite graceful. Voice has added a new dimension. Flexi prims brought a quantum leap in the fashion industry and now

AJ: Tell me Monica the premise of Model’s Workshop for that one person who may not know?

MB: Before even attempting to model, I attended three different schools and got something different from all three. Like most new models, I struggled to get my first job. With persistence, I finally got myself hired at two agencies.

With three schools on my résumé, I was pretty much “schooled out”, but I knew there was still a lot to learn about this field. I got the idea of creating a place to allow models to continue to learn and, remembering how hard it was to break into this industry, to allow new models a chance to get some experience in a non-threatening

She would collect a box of freebie items from around SL and challenge people to put together a fashionable outfit.

MB: I still look back to the energy the group had when it first started.

Viola Rookswood was instrumental in leading the group during a period of my absence and coordinated a move to another location. Lulu Breuer stepped up when Herra left SL and led very many workshops over the next year.

Shae Sixpence led a long series of workshops on photography and photo editing. Sequoia Nigthfire was instrumental in starting the MW Blog and in leading weekly discussions. When we had to move yet again (people who own estates come and go), Kris Messmer donated the use of a parcel on her estate.

After leading Model’s Workshop for a number of years, I decided to step away in 2013. Suki Rexen and Jena Adder have taken a major role in keeping things going in the spirit of Model’s Workshop since then. Jena, among other things, continued the Styling Challenge that I started and produced a number of successful shows and workshops.

There’s not enough space to mention everyone who has contributed to Model’s Workshop, but many people have in various ways over the years. We would sometimes go through lulls or minor crises, but someone always managed to step up.

AJ: Where do you see Model’s Workshop in the next few years?

MB: I don’t know. Model’s Workshop has been a valuable resource for models. I hope it will continue the good work. I stay involved in a supportive way, but don’t take much of an active role any more. I’ve always been open to allowing anyone to lead an activity under the auspices of Model’s Workshop as long as it’s related to modeling and the continuing education of SL models. The future will depend, as it always has, on members stepping up to carry on its mission.

AJ: Have you noticed any changes in the modeling industry in general?

MB: The main change that I’ve seen has been the move away from runway shows and the move towards blogging. There has always been a need for print and store models. As I mentioned previously, SL just keeps getting better. Skins have improved tremendously since I started and animations have also improved. Mesh is revolutionizing the fashion industry. Shows have become more sophisticated.

AJ: I know that you have been involved a lot in rl. Tell me a bit about your staff at Model’s Workshop.

MB: I stay connected with Suki and Jena. Beyond that, I let them organize things. You’ll have to ask them about their staff.

AJ: If you could spend a day on Second Life doing anything you wanted. What would that be?

AJ: Where do you see the fashion industry going in the next five years?

MB: I think the SL fashion industry has pretty much reached a stable point. Unless SL can find a way to pack more people onto a sim, runway shows will be limited. They cost too much to produce and designers don’t always get the return on their investment. I think blogging will continue in a major way. A lot of people seem to like to do it and designers seem to enjoy it. Fitted mesh is just starting to come into its own and I expect will continue to have a big impact.

MB: I’m still amazed at all the creativity in SL. I still spend time exploring, particularly artisticallyoriented sims. I also tend to be a learning junkie. I like nothing better than to attend classes on all sorts of topics.

AJ: Tell me your five favorite stores on Second Life.

MB: Only five? EMO-tions is my favorite hair store. I’ve always liked Prism Design. When I’m looking for something new, I always visit Vero Modero, Ghee, Tres Beau and Azul.

Gizza, Miamai and PurpleMoon are also favorites. I also like to check out new stores that are mentioned by the bloggers.

Thank you Monica! As a writer, part of Model’s Workshop, and now working a lot with the ladies behind Model’s Workshop, I go away fascinated by all that I know I learned from Model’s Workshop and Monica Balut. Magical Beauty, Beautiful Magic: Briarhaven Sim, Friendship and RP

By Rhiannon Colclough When most people think of Role Play, they likely think of interaction centered around a single storyline, and doesn’t extend much past that storyline.

However, a group of people have proved that in Second Life (SL) nothing is impossible, including real, true friendship.

It is the impetus behind the formation of Briarhaven sim and the Briarhaven town and Wylds RP areas. According to Minniver Endsleigh, one of the group of friends that created this amazing, beautiful RP area, “We all met in a RP sim called Artstonia...that is where the story began. It is sadly closed now. However, each of our stories continued, sometimes

together sometimes in different places, but our characters’ tales have remained linear.

A couple of us rented a little bit of land just to have a permanent home base, then we took a little more and others jumped in and helped get more and voila, a full sim LOL! And speaking of beautiful, this sim abounds in beauty, even the darker magic areas have a strange sort of beauty. Any place you explore in this area is simply gorgeous to the eye and soothing to the spirit.

And there are definitely dark areas.

As Minniver explained, “Mage are more analytical, scientific if you will, Druid are nature based, both draw power from what refer to as The Weave, but they approach it differently. The premise in our land is that this is one of the last Bastions of true magic, in a world increasingly forgetful of the old

There are the Briarhaven Wylds as well, part of the area beyond the town. This is the area that is “generally host to the magical creatures and woods folk. You may also find fairy, faun, centaur, elves and such. In addition you

may find the sort of human more comfortable living away from town.

On the cove/beach you will find just about anyone.” Outlaws, hermits and other roles would definitely find a place here as well. Even the setting is conducive, as is it in turn tangled undergrowth that suddenly gives way to copses of twinkling lights, or glowing stone circles, or hide-covered huts. The suddenness with how these clearings appear adds to the magical feel.

Then the town itself is quite lovely—a vaguely southern Europe medieval look and feel that draws in the visitor with its

warm and inviting air. Minniver describes the town as “a port that draws many from all over that come to learn or help hold the balance; there is a need for everyday folk to provide food, drink and accouterments of the magic user. Being a bustling port it brings with it opportunists of all sorts [that] generally thrive in the village.” There are many stores, dwellings and gathering spots for casual and more structured RP, or to just wander and appreciate the effort and time put into making such a cohesive, interesting and beautiful setting. ...continued next page

The premise for the sim is a dark, dreary town with zombies and other terror. A Sim With A Motto: Riping in Absinthe. Maybe it was that frothy green drink you just had or maybe it is the magic of this strange, darkened place, but the distant screams are so clear now as your vision begins to blur...begins the story of Absinthe sim and the Asylum, a gothic RP sim with one of the most open and welcoming RP scenarios one can find in SL. As the introductory notecard one receives at landing attests, “((OOC: Come and RP. Don’t feel out of place. Sit back and enjoy. Beginning RP’ers are welcome to come here and build their persona and back story. Believe me a few hours with the Psy/EBM music and wandering the streets and hallways your background story will spring to life! And when you are ready to build the courage to speak to someone, hopefully you will not regret it.

You are NOT out of place using Absinthe Manor as a guest. Come, sit by the fire, enjoy a game of pool on the balcony or have a drink at the bar and relax. The door never closes for a reason! However, a warning: RL and RP combined in this sim in ways that makes you wonder if you do need a room in the Asylum!

Darkness, gothic and magical themes abound in Absinthe. According to the driving force behind the sim’s creation, Eleyse Ganymede, this was done quite deliberately. “I found my start back before vampires sparkled in the sunlight and before any of them were ever ‘interviewed’ on the big screen. I think flipping through White Wolf’s Vampire: The Masquerade RPG book was probably my first triggering moment. While I never played that game at the time, the books and lore

would solidify it in my mind as being something I would love to explore, but I just never found the platform to do that until now.” Eleyse Ganymede explains as the reason why she first decided to create a gothic sim. She goes on to further elucidate, “Being of a Malkavian bloodline, it was a very fitting choice. to converge for occasional events. But people started to show up in quantities for actual treatment, and it just didn’t work as planned so we expanded the Sim and separated the two.” She can now distance herself from the headcases below and let her Liege, Gordon Hailstorm (Gwordn Tripsa) and his staff attend to their treatments at the now working asylum.

Gordon adds, “I’ve role played a malkavian vampire for years; for those familiar with the white wolf lore, it is an obvious choice for a Malkavian to run an asylum. I never took that step, though, until I met Eleyse, who truly read my mind in setting up the walls

of the first instance of our asylum. She has a direct connection with the spirit world, which allows her to sometimes predict what I will do days before I even decide of the course of action. That can be really spooky sometimes, but I believe she’s truly a blessing, although she will tell anyone who wants to listen that she’s cursed.”

Three looming buildings forming the backdrop to the ever-impending sense of doom; a seedy dockside club next to a bus with a destination sign that is eerily prophetic, “Nowhere.” All roads in the town lead to the three huge background buildings, a huge manor house, an even bigger castle-

like structure and a clock tower. They loom like dangerous monsters over the town and add to the atmosphere that can only be described as screaming “DANGER!” One is the aforementioned Eleyse’s residence, then a clock tower that appears to be more than it seems, and lastly the Aslyum, where one can go to be rescued...or is that what will happen?

The question seems even more logical as one listens to Gordon’s explanation of how the sim came about. “The Absinthe sim represents Snake Island on the black sea, a formerly Romanian island, or bare rock should I say, inhabited by a handful of marine biologists, geologists, fishers and known by archaeologist for the Appolynian temple ruins. We had reasons to think it was built upon a Caïn temple. Its very remote location was also fitting to allow the privacy we were looking for due to the questionable practices of our Mental ward, which is why we really decided us to relocate to Snake Island.”

Both Eleyse and Gordon came to SL for the possibilities afforded to explore alternative existences, and both seem to believe that their explorations in SL have linked to their RL as well. Eleyse

expresses it as, “I’ve had the pleasure of Role Playing in other famous MMO’s for a number of years and while they allowed me to work on my character concepts and RP’ing style, they never offered the creativity like SL has to let the voices in my RL head express themselves. I’ve found myself less interested in leveling up a character as much as I wanted to fine tune their wardrobe and their personality, so SL offered the perfect avenue to express both those desires.” Gordon also has a similar insight and experience: “I had been playing many MMORPG, and dwelling on virtual worlds, such as active worlds since 1998. I always enjoyed role-playing games since pen and paper RPGs, but SL was more than Just a game. It allowed deeper interactions and unprecedented ways to unleash and stimulate creativity.

world, a place for Homo Cyberneticus to blossom, a new word for a new age.”

As for RP’ers, both Eleyse and Gordon welcome all kinds of storylines.

“Because this is set in modern times, it opens itself up to so many possibilities. We really don’t have a storyline here that we are asking others to fit into. Instead we hope we have a really creative backdrop that will be a fun starting point for our visitors’ own creativity. Anything human, gothic, vampire, lycan, witch, demon based RP is perfect here, “Eleyse ticks off as Gordon interjects, “Therapists, Psychologists, nurses, all kinds of deranged souls and weirdos. Lost tourists, writers, archaeologists, nosy investigators could also have reasons to come to snake island. Also vampires,

bloodlines and blood dolls smugglers, as well as corrupt customs officers and a diverse night fauna as our dark red light night club, known as ‘The Cellar’ set in the harbor area, is ran by roleplayers.”

Technically, you don’t need a hud per say. However, the sim does support Bloodlines RP and Grim combat system, so you can RP being a vampire (or zombie hunter!) to your heart’s content. It does add to the verisimilitude if you can be affected by the Zombies or other such denizens of the dark. And both advise not worrying so much about clothing.

As the sim is set in modern times, anything you would wear in your usual SL life would work in this sim. They do, though, advise paying very close

attention to your character and really fleshing out your childhood and other elements of your backstory. As Gordon said, “As always RP’ers should have at least a few ideas of their character’s background story; if they don’t they will have to find a way to dodge the childhood questions in psychoanalysis sessions!”

There are also areas available for rent and living on the sim is possible.

However, Eleyse and Gordon want to also emphasize that active RP’ers are needed. “We want RP’ers to enjoy and share this land as they would if it was their own. Come meet us and our family, as we are always looking for new -worthy- members. While we do have parcels to rent here, we really only want the best and the most active Gothic RP’ers we can find. So if you are a serious RP’er who is tired of voice and clan chat where your character’s voice is lost in the sea of chatter about the best

microwave popcorn flavors, come on out and visit.

We hope you enjoy your stay and find a reason to stay,” Eleyse explains and Gordon agrees. “We have rentals and actual lands for sale on the island; parcels are not officially listed as we prefer to interview the potential buyers beforehand. Our main requirement is that they are active. We don’t want perpetually empty mansions!”

Social Etiquette

By Ava Jhamin I will be doing a series to remind people of proper Etiquette in all kinds of situations and scenarios.

Door Behind Him, Not Caring About the Consequences.

Suddenly it’s a headline, and people begin agreeing that “it sounds just like him, a hothead. It’s probably true, and who knows who suffered in the outcome?” Pretty soon Joe sounds like an irresponsible person with a temper, a disaster waiting to happen, an undesirable employee.

My first one the evil green monster of the Gossip.

We say things like, “I really don’t know whether this is true or not, BUT...” We proclaim that gossiping is a bad thing to do, even as we proceed to do it anyway.

Negative gossip surrounds us.

Rumors abound. People seem to thrive on repeating stories that can hurt and harm. With each telling, the truth often becomes embellished and editorialized.

Pretty soon the tale of Joe leaving his office upset and in a hurry because his child was taken to the emergency room becomes Joe Stalks Out, Furious That Boss Argued the Point, Slamming the

Think about the kinds of gossip we encounter. Three levels come to mind: • First, idle chatter of little consequence to anyone; • Second, idle chatter that is hurtful to others, although not intentionally used as such by the speaker; and • Third, mean-spirited, directed commentary.

When we’re speculating about serious issues, we should really zip our skeptical lips.

are we?) Voicing your suspicions can cause trouble. You will look like a fool, if you are proven wrong.

Take the high road and do not engage in the game. Nothing infuriates and frustrates a gossip more than not taking the bait. Here’s how: 1. Change the topic. Precious time is on your side. That might sound like, “Listen, pals, life is too short to get entangled in this stuff. Besides, I really need to know your thoughts on...solution to...opinion of...We’ve got goals to meet.”

2. Drift away. You don’t need to say a word. Just remove yourself from the group chatting. Your silence and absence will be eloquent. You might say: “There must have been a very good reason to account for this behavior that we do not know. What I do know is that I am not willing to stand here and be a party to a story that maligns a good person.”

3. Rise to the defense. Say things like: “Listen, this just doesn’t sound like Jie.” Or “That really is not the way I heard it.” Then, “It’s really not fair to belabor this, when Joe is not here to defend himself.” Note: Avoid saying, “You are unfair”, etc... The moment we begin a sentence with “you”, communication stops while the other person builds a defense.

4. Speak the truth to the right person.

When you learn that a rumor is untrue, take the person who is spreading it around aside and straighten the score. That might sound like: “I thought you would be interested to know that, as a matter of fact, Joe really was editor of the Harvard Law Review. So it’s a good idea to stop entertaining conversations that he wasn’t.” Period.

No lecturing, just the facts spoken in as unemotional and flat a tone as though you were saying: “It’s raining outside.”

5. Deflect, don’t report. No good can come of repeating petty rumors to those being rumored about. It just hurts, and there’s a danger that the messenger will be shot.

George Washington, first president of the United States, copied two aphorisms in his book “Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation”.

Let your conversation be without malice or envy, for it is a sign of a tractable and commendable nature; and, in all cases of passion, admit reason to govern.

His advice is simple yet far from easy.

Still, it’s worth making a concerted effort to reduce - if not eliminate - the verbal toxicity in our world. n

Others talking is a great part of the things that make me unhappy I think “Well, if only that person wouldn’t be talking about me, I would be happier” But when the truth is, I can choose whether or not to listen I can choose whether or not to sit with them Or whether or not I believe something someone else is saying about my life Because we all know that other people are the experts on all of our problems Fastening their opinions of us based off the exterior and no true knowledge of who I am Please remember if you can’t own it then don’t say it.

I say what I mean and mean what I say and to the faces of those I say it to.

Well, if there is someone who knows more about me than I know myself Come, please have me meet them, because I would sure like the answer key to life’s book of problems.

Because perhaps they play God, too.

In the beginning of 2015, Cacilia McMasters and Ava Jhamin needed a flamingo. I was very available and they used me in an Alice in Wonderland set. They hid me and started a contest to find me. Since then they have added me to every set they have built. I have been on the roof as a weather vane, a bartender or an art piece...the list goes on and on. Being with Cacilia and Ava at L’Amour has been a real adventure.
