STATEMENT OF INTENT

SVAD GD+I FAMILY,

My name is Ava Andrews and I am from Concord, North Carolina. I am currently a freshman Studio Art major who desires to pursue a concentration in Graphic Design and Illustration. Throughout my life, I have always had a cre ative mindset. I was very successful in the arts throughout middle school and high school and always know I wanted to turn it into my career later on. In middle school, I started my digital art and painting business where I sold prints and canvases of my art to friends and family. In high school, I loved being in charge of the student council on Instagram as I was the senior class historian. I often took photos and made visually pleasing graphics to get the student of my high school to get more involved. This hobby quickly leads led me to research graphic design more, and I decided to try a high school digital art class.

In this class I took, I quickly learned my love for graphic design and knew I wanted to learn everything. Moving on to college I knew I wanted to be very involved at the University of South Carolina in every aspect I could. I am involved in Student-Made where I sell my artwork such as canvases and digital art prints. I am also working for a student-run magazine as a deputy graphic designer. I would like to be considered for the Graphic Design and Illustration program at the SVAD because I want to be challenged and driven by the talented faculty of this program and curriculum to create amazing work. I decided to pursue this field to encourage and grow my love for art and design. I believe that Graphic design is now a crucial part of our society today and is an important skill to pursue in the industry.

PROJECT 1

Project 1: Six-Word Stories

This project was my first taste of what was possible for me to create in this class. This project allowed me to explore Adobe Photoshop and gain confidence in combining type and imagery. We were tasked to develop two six-word stories, then design visual responses illustrating the meaning of the story utilizing typography and a minimal amount of imagery and corresponding visuals. Much of this project was based on exploration and experi mentation. Since I was not very familiar with Adobe software, this project helped me learn the basics of the tools in Photoshop as well as the basics of design.

For my project 1, (six-word stories), we had the freedom to pull phrases from song lyrics, ads, overheard conversations, movies, etc. They could have been serious, funny, or inspir ing. I decided to choose two 6-word phrases that I could personally relate to and have experienced in my life. As I began to gain creativity and realized what I was capable of design-wise, I found that more and more ideas came to me ranging from typeface choices to visual aspects. The loose parameters of this project gave me the flexibility to be able to create anything I wanted while still pertaining to the project requirements. After complet ing this project, I believe that I can successfully execute a smart design and visual choices as well as practice the typography aspects of design.

PROJECT 1

Six Word Story 1

For my project 1, (six-word stories), I chose two 6-word phrases that I could relate to. For both of my phrases, I created word maps to brainstorm similar words to gain creativity for graphics. My goal was for the audience to comprehend the story being told within the image. While creating my final for my story 1, I choose a dramatic photo that would speak the dramatic story line of the strangers, to lovers, to strangers again. This story and image reminded me of a love game that individuals play, so i created the typography to be similar to a scrabble game. During the critique in class, my classmates recommended to horizontally align the letters in FRIENDS and STRANGERS. After my critiques in class, I wrote on my images and wrote corrections to help me visually see the little details I may have missed.

PROCESS & DETAIL

After my critiques in class, I wrote on my images and wrote corrections to help me visually see the little details I may have missed.

Six Word Story 2

While creating the final for my story 2, I immediately thought of a long rocky pathway. When I discovered this image with mountains, I knew I couldn’t just create linear typography over the image since it would distract from the image itself. Instead, I curved the typography over the mountains so that the audience’s eyes would draw from the type to the mountains, to the pathway so that they can comprehend the story quickly. I do think I could have chosen a better image to go with this phrase since there is only one pathway in the image. My instructor recommended being careful when warping the text since it can easily create large gaps be tween characters, so I will be keeping that in mind for my future projects.

PROJECT 2

Project 2: Typography Abstraction

This project allowed me to explore Adobe Illustrator through the creation of ab stract typographic compositions. I developed three 5” x 5” compositions using three consecutive characters from a typeface. For this project, I experimented with dif ferent typefaces and honestly just played around with different rotations and sizes of each letter. I created 3 art boards and kept creating more until I was happy with my designs. I wanted each design to stand out on its own, so I did go back and forth between a few. I enjoyed getting to know how to use InDesign through this project and gaining knowledge through the design aspects.

Project 2: Process

For my artboards, I used letters that would be somewhat similar to create unique shapes and patterns. This project was somewhat difficult for me since I like my deigns to be precise and visually pleasing so I wanted to try and create these pieces as visually pleasing as I could. To start this project I kept designing and playing around with fonts, placement and balance. I try to emphasize the balance of composition in this project. for each art board, I wanted to focus on depth and perception. For many of these, I would dimply spend time on each and just play around. For some, I liked it right away and for some, I had to focus and keep revising

Project 3: Poster Design

This project allowed me to explore Adobe InDesign through the creation of a poster for AIGA’s Get out the Vote campaign. This project is similar to the Great Ideas ad series developed by the Container Corporation of America in the 1940s and 50s. This design was required to be nonparti san. My goal was for the poster to encourage people to vote and illustrate the importance of voting.

Project 3: Process

I chose my quote to be, “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” - William James. I chose this quote because I believe that as a society today, many have the false accusation that “their vote does not count,” but this is not true. Every vote counts and it is how we can make a difference in our country. After choosing my quote for this project, I started brainstorming by creating word maps and mood boards. I used my mood boards to create a color pallet and brainstorm ideas for fonts and visual concepts. While selecting images for my mood boards, I chose colors and images that I think would have inspired me to vote. Voting is an act that we as citizens must make to create the country that we desire so I wanted to incorporate that into my project. Since this was my first time using InDesign, I used a lot of time researching and playing around with the software. I used many tools and played around with textures. When processing my final, I made many revisions and then decided on a final.

PROJECT 4

Project 4: LogomarksCharacter

In this project, I explored the area of logo design through the development of 2 logo marks based on movie characters. A logomark is a visual representation of a person, business, or brand. It must be memorable, appropriate, and simple. My logos must include a mark (illustration) and typography. I learned that a logo is defined as a visual symbol used by an organization business or person so that they can be represented and recognized uniquely. A logo must engage the viewer, Be memorable, communicate clearly, be scalable, and work well in size. I decided to make my logos based on the move Elvis (2022). Elvis Aaron Presley, or simply Elvis, was an American singer and actor. Dubbed the “King of Rock and Roll”, he is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. I also created a logo inspired by his manager, Tom Parker.

Tom parker, Thomas Andrew Parker, commonly known as Colonel Parker, was a Dutch-born musical entrepreneur, best known for being Elvis Presley’s manager. Born in the Netherlands, Parker emigrated illegally to the United States at the age of 20. He changed his name and claimed to have been born in the United States.

Project 4 Process

In my process, I created 2 logos that represent the character’s personality and lifestyle.

I started by creating sketches and mood boards to figure out my vision for each character’s logo.

Elvis Presley was a legendary singer in rock and roll. In my design, I created a vegas sign to symbolize his stardom and musical talents that were showcased in Las Vegas. Elvis is known for cre ating Vegas so I went with a typeface that stood out and matched his legendary style and flare. Regarding my color choices, I de cided to go with black, red, and yellow since some of Elvis’s best styles were in black leather.

Tom parker, Elvis’s manager was known to be a country music manager and later an ally to Elvis himself. Tom parker was known as being an aggressive gambler and created Vegas as Elvis’s man ager. I created a similar type style to that on the “Welcome to Las Vegas” to symbolize his love for Vegas and added a western flare. As for the colors, Tom parker didn’t emphasize much of a style or personality so I created colors that match the Las Vegas flare to emphasize his love for Vegas and gambling.

PROJECT 5

Project 5: Syntax & Semantics

For this project, my job was to select a category and choose 4 items. I was to look at my subjects and write comments for these five categories: Syntax (visual ele ments & relationships), Semantics: Denotation (specif ics), Semantics: Connotation (associations), Semantics: Expression (feelings) Presence (contextual). Syntax is the structure of language. Elements of syntax include word order and sentence structure, which can help reveal the function of an unknown word. Semantics is the meaning of individual words. If one word is unknown, the meanings of surrounding words can give clues to the word’s probable meaning. For my focus, I decided to use jackets.

SYNTAX: (visual elements and relationships)Black form with sections of detail throughout the object. The object is made of a tight leather substance with zippers emphasizing the side and front. It is black and basic with a very intreging look. There are circular elements and buckles that appear to be silver on the object that create extra detail.

SEMANTICS: DENOTATION (specified) Clothing > jacket > unisex jacket

SEMANTICS: EXPRESSION (feelings) Dark, vintage, young, edgy

SEMANTICS: CONNOTATION (associations) Motorcycle riding, shopping mall

PRESENCE: (contextual) Little: At a motorcycle show Lots: At a summer wedding

SYNTAX: (visual elements and relationships) The object has predominantly white, pink, and orange tones, with floral designs that have small green ac cents to emphasize the leaves to the flowers. Overall visual elements are equal in size, but some flowers are closer to each other than others. The object includes small details of bright pink accents within the zippers going down the center and the sides for pockets.

SEMANTICS: DENOTATION (specified) Clothing > jacket > little girls puffer jacket SEMANTICS: EXPRESSION (feelings) Sweet, childish, girly, playful

SEMANTICS: CONNOTATION (associations) Shared: young girl’s birthday party Specific: Reminds me of a jacket had as a little girl.

PRESENCE: (contextual) Little: A playground or dance studio Lots: In a doctor’s office or law firm

SYNTAX (visual elements and relationships) Baby blue form with a holographic fabric that is strong, but still flexible enough to bend and squish together. The material of the object is thick and high in quality. The object includes two small buttons down the center of the jacket to clasp either side and the material sinches around these buttons. The top of the jacket flares out on either side to create warmth and comfort while also providing pockets on either side.

SEMANTICS: DENOTATION (specified) Clothing > jacket > women’s designer jacket SEMANTICS: EXPRESSION (feelings) Simple, bold, colorful, bright, expensive, high quality

SEMANTICS: CONNOTATION (associations) Cold areas, ice skating, playing in the snow

PRESENCE: (contextual) Little: Ice skating rink Lots: A funeral in the summer

SYNTAX (visual elements and relationships) Predominantly royal blue, white, and red. Minimal black and white elements are shown including a patch on the right arm sleeve, and white stitching on the left side of the chest and side right pocket. Stripes are shown across the object in the neck, the arms, the wrists, and the wristband of the jacket. Buttons are placed down the center and spaced evenly until the last three on the bottom to be able to clasp together easily. Patches are shown on the object to emphasize achievements and school spirit in bright colors.

SEMANTICS: DENOTATION (specified) Clothing > jacket > high school letterman jacket

SEMANTICS: EXPRESSION (feelings) Bold, young, teen, jock, sports, high school

SEMANTICS: CONNOTATION (associations) High school sports, teen boys, athleticism

PRESENCE: (contextual) Little: High school football game Lots: Business office

Project 5 Process Detail Pages

Project 5: Process

I chose jackets as my focal point and choose four jackets that can relate to one’s person ality or talents. For each jacket, I tried to relate it to people that I know personally. For example, to me, a leather jacket relates to a person with an edgy style or a biker, a floral jacket relates to a young girl with girly taste, a letterman jacket relates to a high school football star, and a fun bright holographic jacket relates to a teen girl with fun style. When writing the Syntax, Seman tics: Denotation, Semantics: Connotation, Semantics: Expression, and Presence, I tried to picture myself in the jacket and how I would associate myself in society with each jacket. This helped me to create a realistic and believable summary. For example:
