Career artists depend on grants for survival and exhibition of their artwork. Grants are essentially loans that don’t need to be paid back. Anyone who meets certain specified criteria can receive a grant for just about anything. Proposers simply have to meet the organization, company, or institution’s award guidelines and terms. A variety of grants exists for artists. Some are cash grants that allow artists to live and create art as they please, provided a project is completed by the agreed deadline. Other grants can aid artists by providing studio space, residencies, exhibition space, or art supplies. Here are just a few organizations that issue grants: College Art Association (http://www.collegeart.org) Creative Work Fund (http://www.creativeworkfund.org) Fulbright (http://www.iie.org/fulbright)

Getting a Grant

How does one receive a grant? It’s a long and sometimes tedious process, but one that will pay off in the end if all the t’s and i ’s are crossed and dotted properly. First, take the application process seriously. Remember, many other working artists also want the same grants. Every artist enters a fierce competition for the money; be the victorious artist. Here’s how: In the proposal/application, be clear and concise about plans, intentions, and goals.
