What is Automated Manual Transmission?

What is Automated Manual Transmission (AMT)? Automated manual transmission, automated manual gearbox or simply automated gearbox are some of the common names used for a type of motor vehicle transmission which implements a clutch by wire. It allows for semi-automatic control. A number of AMTs do not have a conventional clutch pedal in vehicles that would otherwise require it, but rather disengage the clutch automatically using one or more electro-hydraulic valves when operating under computer control, with human input only to start from stationary and engage first gear. This electronically controlled system is often referred to as an automated manual transmission (AMT) or automated dual-clutch transmission (DCT). An automated manual transmission cars use electrical servomotors to actuate the clutch and shift the transmission. In automated manuals, the clutch is either fully automated, engaging smoothly with little driver input, or semi-automated – requiring some input from the driver via a button or lever to signal that it is safe for automated operation. In either case, manual engagement of a gear can be made by simply moving the shift stick as in standard automatic transmissions - or by pressing a button on the main instrument panel. A traditional 'limp home' facility allows automated manuals to be driven away from a location where they cannot easily be restarted even if the failure isn't too severe (for example, losing all vacuum pressure). When activated, this starts up an emergency automated program which controls the gears and drivetrain for a short time after engine failure. This function is helpful when you are on hilly or winding roads.

For example: When operating in automated mode, shifts are executed based on pre-programmed parameters which may vary according to supervisory control inputs, current gear, accelerator position, vehicle speed, engine torque output and ambient conditions. The automated manual transmission is not to be confused with dual-clutch automated manual transmission ('dual clutch' being trademarked by Volkswagen AG as 'DSG'). A dual clutch is actually two separate but synchronized units within one housing. AMT systems will often have an open hydraulic system allowing it to work with any hydraulically operated automated clutch currently on the market. The automated manual transmission (AMT) is a type of automated gearbox, City clutch, a motor-vehicle transmission that includes a self-acting or automated clutch and shift mechanism. Although automatics and automated manuals can appear very similar both in function and appearance, they operate quite differently. An automated manual has an automated shifting system controlled by computer which disengages the clutch when required and executes shifts without any input from the driver via a selector lever or shifter.
