Chao Phraya River & Canals Bangkok owes much of its fascinating history to the communities that flourish along the Chao Phraya riverbanks. The areas from Wat Arun to Phra Sumeru Fortress are home to some of the oldest settlements in Bangkok, particularly Bangkok Noi, where you can still revel in the charming ambiance of stilt houses and markets flanking the complex waterways. One of the most scenic areas, the riverside reflects a constantly changing scene day and night: water-taxis ferrying commuters and heavily laden rice barges chugging upstream, set against a backdrop of glittering temples, historical landmarks and luxury, five-star hotels.

Golden Buddha Wat Traimit Temple and Exhibition Centre Without doubt the Golden Buddha is an astonishing image, but more the exhibition centre is entertainment for all ages, a must see. Admission: Nominal. Tour rating: 8.5 (10 best) The exhibition is interactive, demonstrating the history of "Chinatown" and how the Chinese community influenced Bangkok through the centuries. It's highly recommended to absorb the history and culture of the area. The Golden Buddha image is about 900 years old and is cast in the Sukhothai style. It is believed to have been brought first to Ayutthaya. When the Burmese were about to sack the city, it was covered in plaster to hide its value. Two centuries later, still in plaster, it was thought to be worth very little. But in 1957, when the image was being moved to a new temple in Bangkok, it slipped from a crane and was left in the mud by workmen. In the morning, a temple monk, who had dreamed that the statue was divinely inspired, went to see the Buddha image. Through a crack in the plaster he saw a glint of yellow, and discovered that the statue was pure gold. The graceful seated Buddha is nearly 10 feet high and weighs over 5 tons. This powerful image has such a bright, reflective surface that its edges seem to disappear, and it gleams with such richness and purity that even the most jaded are inspired by its strength and power. Photo collage <> Photo slide-show <> More detail Transport: There are several options, the easiest is the fast and efficient subway MRT, it's clean and very safe. Exit at station Hua Lamphong, use exit gate 1 (Wat Traimit), then a 500mtr walk, across a Khlong (Canal), follow the signs or ask the locals. The venue comprises several levels, exhibition centre and prayer room (Golden Buddha). Admission cost: Nominal: (100-200baht) prices split for Exhibition and/or temple (prayer room). Wat Arun (The Temple of the Dawn) Zone: Thonburi > 5kms West of Siam Duration: half day / evening The impressive silhouette of Wat Arun’s towering spires has probably become one of the most recognised temple landmarks of Southeast Asia. Constructed during the first half of the 19th century by King Rama II, in the ancient Khmer style, the stupa (or ‘Prang’ in Thai), showcasing ornate floral pattern decked out in glazed porcelain, is even more stunning up close. Apart from its beauty, Wat Arun symbolises the birth of the Rattanakosin Period and the founding of the new capital after Ayutthaya fell. Wat Arun is named after Arun, the Indian God of Dawn. Contrary to what it's name suggests, the temple appears most beautiful at sunset, rather than sunrise. Situated on the river bank, the main ferry stop is Pier (Tha) Rachini and then a ferry across the river (3 Baht). However if you have booked a long tail boat it will take you directly to Pier at Wat Arun. Once landed, absorb the history or enjoy the souvenir feast, including the chance to dress up in Thai costume for your photo memorabilia. Chinatown (Yaowarat) Zone: Chinatown: 3kms West half to fullday or night Packed with market stalls and probably the highest concentration of gold shops in the city. The Chinese communities, relocated here from southern China in the 1700s, still continue their own traditions and religious practices. During major festivities like Chinese New Year and the Vegetarian Festival, the dynamism and spirit of celebration spreads across town like wildfire, and if you happen to be around, don’t miss an opportunity to witness Bangkok Chinatown at its best. Collage photo <> Photo Collage slideshow Make sure you visit Golden Buddha at Wat Traimit and the Yaowarat Chinatown Heritage Center, it's listed in this booklet. The exhibition centre is and excellent introduction and display. The most popular reason to go here is the food and bargain hunting shoppers. Many eateries stay open long into the night or even 24 hours. The location is detailed in Shopping zones (not much on nightlife) Public Transport: From BTS Skytrain station Siam allow 20 to 30 mins by Taxi or tuktuk. At peak traffic times this could be hours. Dinner Cruise 2011-09: 3kms S.West The experience of a river or canal in the day is not something that can be compared to the charm and romance of a evening cruise. Typically the evening cruises are around two (2) hours. The main piers are busy from about 7pm with cruises departing at various points about every 15 minutes and the last of the cruise options departs around 8.30 The river dinner cruise covers passes such places as Pinklao Bridge Rama IX Bridge eight, the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Wat Phra Kaew and the Royal Navy Auditorium. Most all vessels provide narration in English and Thai. There are a variety of cruise themes. The basic cruise: ride only, the fare price is approx 300bt and a buffet dinner around 500bt, these tend to be 3.5star economy tour groups. The Cultural cruise: "Wan Fah Cruises" has been servicing tourist for many years with their traditional teak wood vessels with seating for 70 to 130 passengers. The package is a set menu, narration of Icons along the river and at intervals fully costumed traditional Thai dances roll out down the middle of the boat, you can almost touch them (but don't), wait until your asked to join in, do try! The price is approx 1200-1500bt Luxury Cruise: There are quite a few modern medium to large size vessels offering similar 5 star luxury comforts, stunning buffet dinner, live music, some modern and others traditional, choice of seating (inside or out). The boats range from size of 150 to 300 passengers. The price approx 1400 - 1800bt. Some packages are optioned for Hotel transfer, which usually means you need to be ready several hours before hand while they shuttle between Hotels, it' mean a slow transfer but think of it as it's a free observation tour. The most popular location is Rivercity complex in Bang Rak, a 5 star tourism centre on the Chao Phraya river. The centre caters for high volume tourism, here you can be entertained with a cultural dance show, browse the arts and crafts shops and if your lucky catch a Muay Thai event, they are hosted at River city quite frequently. Getting there: If your going to Rivercity .. from Siam take the BTS skytrain to station Saphan Taksin, it interchanges with the main river pier "Central" or Sathorn. Many venues have courtesy shuttle boats as is the case with Rivercity, otherwise grab a taxi, it's about 1.5kms. The MRT (subway) station Hua Lamphong is about 1km from Rivercity. Be cautioned, traffic can mean dissappointment, the boat can not wait so go early and enjoy the surroundings. The location is not far from the famous Skybar and other such wonderful nightspots. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market All day tour: 100kms S.West If your committed to getting up early otherwise there are alternatives noted below. The pioneer of floating markets, Damnoen Saduak continues to offer an authentic experience despite its increasingly touristy atmosphere. According to history around 1866 King Rama IV ordered a 32km canal be dug at Damnoen Saduak. The canal would connect the Mae Khong River with Tacheen River. Totally chaotic, small 'khlongs' or canals are filled with flat boats piled high with fresh produce, each jockeying for position and paddled by local ladies ready to stop and bargain at a moment’s notice. It's colourful, noisy, touristy, but great fun. Food vendors fill their vessels with cauldrons and charcoal grills, ready to whip up a bowl of ‘boat noodle’ or seafood skewers upon request. Floating markets are like living museums where you can immerse in the local culture and way of life as it once was before the arrival of global consumerism. Most people come here on a tour but it really is best done independently if you want to avoid the crowds. It takes place in the morning and tours tend to arrive at 9.30 am, so those who arrive by 9.00am or earlier will have the best experience. This also leaves you free to hire a boat yourself and look around the canals and markets. Opening Hours: 07:00 - 11:00 (every day) Collage photo <> Slideshow > Forum article > more info How to get there: Take a bus from the Southern Bus Terminal (+66 (0) 2 434 5557-8) to Samut Sangkhram Ratchaburi province, 80 km southwest of Bangkok. Kanchanaburi Tours Located approx 130kms North West of Bangkok Thailand’s third largest province, Kanchanaburi covers some 19,473 square and oftentimes mountainous kilometres, and borders Myanmar (Burma) to the west of Bangkok. The compact provincial capital a two-hour drive from Bangkok, is both the site of the world-famous Bridge Over The River Kwae, immortalised in books and movies, and gateway to a region of rugged natural beauty. Countryside beyond the provincial capital is characterised by mountains and fertile river valleys (the Kwae Yai and Kwae Noi) which have inspired the development of hydro-electric power, and where labyrinthine dam reservoirs provide further scenic elements to the province’s natural beauty. Arresting scenic beauty. Forested mountains. Waterfalls. Pristine national parks. Tranquil riverine and reservoir settings. Leisure opportunities including jungle treks employing elephants and rafts. Historical associations dating from Neolithic times to the Second World War…There are several compelling reasons for visiting Kanchanaburi. Game fishing 20-09-11 14kms from City half or full day or night It's popularity is aided by the fact that it's in the same direction as Chatuchak Markets, if your not into shopping then mediate! Bungsamran Fishing Park is quite possibly the most unique fishery on the planet. Intensity: low-med Staff available to handle the bait and gaff. Fight monsters or lounge around on the walkways and embrace the evening sunset. The water side restaurant is stunning in the sunset. Duration: 2-3 hrs or overnight. Cost: Admission is FREE. Cost to hire equipment and helpers is nominal, see forum article. Location: Approx 14kms from Siam BTS, take the BTS skytrain from/near Chatuchak markets. The Park is open 24/7 with Accommodation and an excellent open air Restaurant. Although hard to describe Bung Sam Lan as "pretty" it has a rustic quaintness that will grow on you as the day passes. Currently holding 10 IGFA world records, is tucked away down a very inconspicuous and sleepy Soi (side street), away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok life. When you first role up to the entrance of this fishing paradise you could be forgiven for wondering whether you have found the right place since it so unassuming. But as you walk through the covered walkway entrance, collect your bait, and wonder out onto the decked walkways that follow the perimeter of the lake, you are presented with a Shangri-La type vision. The Ancient City creates kind of atmosphere that induces visitors to perceive and appreciate the continuity of history, cultures, religions, arts and customs of Thai people from dawn until now. The layout preserves the pattern of traditional Thai lifestyles, which is hard to behold nowadays. Tawandaeng Brewery & Cabaret Est: 1999 Tawandaeng is a large venue and very popular with the locals due primarily to the right kind of entertainment. Intensity: med-high Price: low - see Database link below Tour rating: 9 (10 best) Time: show 8pm to 23.30 Patrons: Mainly conservative middle class audience fill the cavernous room, the younger guys had the right haircuts (look like Japanese cartoon characters) whereas the Thai folk and morlam singers looked either like poor or successful country bumpkins. Make no mistake "this was a good show" Entertainment: The audience was not allowed a moments rest and the amount of dunkels being downed did their bit to contribute to the party atmosphere. The Thais know how to enjoy their music, actually any music just the loud sound and seeing anyone smile is enough to get them jigging and it’s most contagious. Photo collage <> Photo slide-show > Forum article & video <> website The girls have an outstanding ability to be innocent yet so sassy in their dance moves, I'm not so sure if some parents would approve. Despite the slight disappointment in the not so authentic German taste of the viands and brew, I had a blast watching the people genuinely having inspired fun and could not help but laugh in wonder at the play list and the way it was put together. If you want to impress look no further for dinner and entertainment under one roof. The centre room is bulked with Tables and the wing area is 2 storey all having good view onto the stage show which never ends. The night engulfs you and everyone us standing at their table jigging along to their favourite tune or they wonder to the narrow dance area in front the stage to dance more or offer rewards to the entertainers (free drinks). BTS Skytrain: Fast, efficient and affordable, running everyday from 06.00 to midnight. Mo Chit station at the north end, where you can find the weekend Chatuchak Market. Siam Station, adjacent to huge shopping malls: Siam Centre, Siam Discovery Centre and Siam Paragon, is the central station with a link to National Stadium Station to MBK shopping centre. Saphan Taksin Station & boat pier. Fares from 10 to 40 baht or 100 baht unlimited day pass. MRT Subway metro: With 18 stations covering main roads in Bangkok including Rama IV, Sukhumvit, Lad Prao and Pahonyothin, MRT opened in 2004 and operates everyday from 06.00 to midnight. Connecting to the BTS Skytrain at Sukhumvit Station (Asoke BTS Station), Lumping Station (Silom BTS Station) and Chatuchak Station (Mo Chit BTS Station) with a link to Hua Lampong train station. Fares: 15 to 60 baht. Taxi: Very easy to find everywhere in Bangkok, with the meter starting from 35 baht, it's a low cost convenient transport when the traffic is flowing. However, always make sure the driver activate the meter. Then there is the ubiquitous Tuk tuks touting for business. They’re a fun ‘must-do’ experience but in Bangkok peak traffic the induced fumes are "not fun". If your game try local culture motor bike taxi say ChaCha (go slow) or ReoReo (go fast) The river and canal ferry is a whole new must do experience. "Longdo" is Thai
