We would like to remind all APRA members and competitors that there is an expectation that rodeo grounds and camping facilities are respected and left in a clean and tidy manner by our membership. Simple housekeeping habits such as placing rubbish in bins, obeying restricted areas and leaving a campsite with minimal impact is not only noticed, but also a show of appreciation and respect to the hard-working committees and clubs that are often volunteers

Last month of the 2025 Season – where did that go???!
We have 3 remaining events for the month Marrar Madness Xtreme Broncs and Extreme Steer Wrestling, Quilpie Show Rodeo and Cunnamulla Pro Rodeo.
Our first events of the 2026 Season will be the double header at Injune and Mitchell on the long weekend of October. The two committees are once again running an incentive buckle for the weekend as the Kenniff Country Challenge, so make sure you put your entries in the last week of September.
The AGM was a great forum for the Association and positive discussions were had about how we move forward for the upcoming year. The minutes are available in this edition of the Rodeo News, and the new rules will come into effect in the 2026 Season.
An important change for all competitors will be moving entry dates backwards to allow more time for members to enter for events. The rodeos in the new season will have entries open from Monday – Thursday with late entries from Friday to the following Monday at 12pm. Any rodeos with different entry dates will be notified through the Rodeo News and website calendar.
On that note, please see early extended entry dates for Warwick Rodeo and the Christmas/New Year period.
NFR preparations are progressing quickly, and we recommend grabbing tickets and accommodation early, so you don’t miss out!! Camping is only available for competitors so don’t forget to book a room or hit a mate up for a bed for an epic three days of rodeo action. We are excited to welcome the Australian Rope Horse Futurity to the NFR this year. The ARHF are passionate about developing rope horses, their owners and competitors. More information has been provided in this edition.
The 2026 calendar is also filling up fast and we appreciate the support from returning committees and new committees. Head Office is available 8am-4pm Monday to Friday and we can assist you with any questions you may have about running an APRA Affiliated event in 2026. A brief overview of the process to set up your event;
1.Email us your date as soon as it’s confirmed
2.Your proposed date will be reviewed by the Competition Committee
3.If approved, we will list your event on the website and Rodeo News as a Date Claimer
4.We then require a fully completed rodeo application form at least 3 months prior to your date.
5.Your application will be reviewed by the Competition Committee
6.Once approved we will publish your event details on the website and Rodeo News
Our competitors plan their season well in advance, so we recommend getting your information to us as soon as you can so we can give your event maximum exposure.

Hi members, I’m Ella Burns, the newly appointed breakaway roping director. I am the 2024 Rookie Breakaway roping champion of the APRA and an NFR qualifier.
I took on this position as I wish to see the breakaway roping within our association to continue to grow at the rapid rate that it is. With record breaking entries and prize money posted for breakaway roping, I wish to work with committees and promoters to see our event expand in ways we haven’t seen before. Our event is fast paced and exciting to watch and through advocating breakaway roping I hope to see new members come on board to have a go at the sport we all love so much.
I hope to be the voice of the competitors when needed and support our event to expand for many years to come. Please feel free to approach me with any concerns or ideas that you may have.
I would like to wish everyone safe travels and good luck in the final weeks of the 2025 regular rodeo season!

Please like and follow our ARHF Facebook page to keep up to date with future developments.
The ARHF is pleased to announce our first event in Australia, to be held in conjunction with the APRA National Finals rodeo
Our vision: It started as an idea between Flying H Ranch (Lance and Cathrina Hutton) and Big M Quarter Horse Stud (Jodie and Craig Mearns) to promote performance horses in the same way as they do in the USA, and to grow our industry by providing a platform to showcase trained rope horses. It will showcase horses and horsemanship skills with the aim of breeding high-quality rope horses in Australia.
We aim to expand and affiliate more qualifying events throughout the country with our affiliates, which will ultimately lead to a year-end finals, culminating in a select rope horse sale and judges' clinics.
We will be following the Rules and Guidelines of the GOLD BUCKLE FUTURITIES in the USA Please feel free to look up their website, as we are aligned with them We will also be following the Australian animal Welfare Rules of the APRA
These will be judged events (not decided on the fastest time), instead on you and your horse's performance
We will be conducting Pre-Works, where you will purchase 5-minute slots per pre-work in the arena and can also run a head of stock with it if needed
We are currently building our website, which will feature all the necessary forms and instructions for the event, including the rules for your review
Dave Johnston didn’t grow up in a country or cowboy setting. “I was a surfer. I grew up on the Northshore of Sydney and my grandparents had a place right near the beach. I used to leave for school, and I’d often end up at the beach and not school,” laughs Dave. The balance he’d developed while surfing would go on to serve him well as he ventured into the cowboy side of things in his teenage years. “First, I got into horses through a few lads from school They had boarding stables in Sydney, and I went for a look Then in 1971 I went to Coonamble rodeo with a few mates and got on my first steer and I won ” Dave was hooked and so began his legendary cowboy career
Still living in Sydney, Dave would travel to Garry McPhee’s to get on practice stock “That’s how I got going Neville McCarthy was a big influence on me as a cowboy too. I rode bulls and bareback horses, but I won more money riding bulls.” While he claims the bull riding was always his favourite, Dave would go on to win Australian titles in both the Bareback Riding and the Bull Riding. The rodeo life would take Dave all the way to America and back. “I won the bull ride at St Paul, in Oregon. Neville and I both made the short go at Cheyenne. That was fun.”
Already a decorated cowboy, it was a chance drawing of an infamous bucking bull and a subsequent 90-point ride that would truly cement Dave into Australian rodeo history. On 17 January 1987 at Tamworth rodeo “I was the first bloke to ride Chainsaw.” It was the first time the once surfer had drawn the unridden bull. “It felt good, but I was glad to hear the whistle!”
Well known on the rodeo circuit for his flamboyant personality and infectious love of life, Dave loved socializing and talking to people. “One day I was asked to fill in for someone with the rodeo announcing and I liked it.” His Sydney beginnings had given Dave a broad perspective and an ability to communicate with a wide range of people, especially those who didn’t know or understand the rodeo world. “I worked out that I could tell them what was happening and what they were watching, but in their language. And I liked talking.” At the time rodeo announcers would call the action from a box safely away from the action, but Dave wasn’t content to not have a front row seat “I would ride a horse in the arena and announce I liked to be right amongst the action and on a horse I was safe, and I could easily get out of the way if I needed to ”
In 1991, Dave’s rodeo career was suddenly cut short, and his life hung in the balance when he was horned by a bull The horn went through his mouth and up through his pallet Dave endured extensive rehabilitation, including learning to walk and talk again, and has lifelong effects from that fateful day But his love for life and a yarn has not wavered “As long as you wake up alive, it’s a good start to the day isn’t it!” His family, through daughter Tayla and grandchildren Ryder and Katie, have continued on with the sport he loved so much and watching them compete makes him “very proud ” Adding a Hall of Fame induction to his cowboy resume seems fitting for Dave Johnston “I feel very honoured ”
John Brearly’s start in rodeo came by pure happenstance In 1963, 18-year-old John was working at a riding school in Narre Warren Victoria, taking trail rides Two cowboys came along for a ride and told him he should be riding at rodeos rather than a riding school So, John went out to a practice day with them, and that was it The start of a rodeo legacy Both of those cowboys have passed, but if he could speak to them now, he said, “I’d probably give them a cuff over the ear for getting me hooked on it No, I’d just like to go and see them again ”
It was the Kyabram Rodeo where John made his rodeo debut, and he won the steer ride A great start to a long rodeo career Over the years he tried his hand at all of the rodeo events to find that bareback riding, he won his first bareback ride too, and steer wrestling were going to be his two main events
John also took the time to try and help rodeo committees out when he could, mentioning going to Mount Isa and Cloncurry before the event started to help them get everything ready Earning himself a life membership for Cloncurry and Omeo, so both ends of the country John also served as the Bareback director on the board in the 70s, before he headed over to the states
We asked John to share a couple of highlights of his Rodeo career, and the highlights included his first Mount Isa win, Winning the Bareback and Steer Wrestling Australian titles in 75, while breaking two earnings records with those as well “It’s a little bit different now,” he shared with a laugh “But so are the entry fees ” Being a judge at the APRA finals for about 30 years in a row was another highlight, as was winning a trip to the states in 1976 managing the team for the bicentennial to compete in 10 rodeos in 6 weeks But the biggest one of all was making a lot of mates along the way
After another trip to the states in 1978, resulting in a broken leg in his first rodeo, lead to 6 months of letting that heal while watching James Bell paint paintings that looked like photographs. Then a couple of years off to “heal properly” as he put it and work building goosenecks. He carried on riding bareback horses until he was about 40, with the Circle G in Townsville. “Couldn’t judge it,” he said. “So, I put my entry in and won the last one. I won my first and the last.” What a way to start and finish his time in the arena.
After hanging up his riggin’, John also put in many great years as a rodeo judge. He stayed as close to the action as he could without being on a bucking horse. Even running judges’ clinics, joking whether it worked or not he didn’t know. Continuing to judge rodeo up until 2018, when his knees and back decided it was time.
In looking back on rodeo from back then until now, John spoke of the days of fun with your mates, where each rodeo event was 70 deep. Travelling down the road with a couple of the guys and how they’d all help each other out, pay for the fuel if you ran out of money or riding in arenas with cars pulled up around, headlights on because lights were too expensive. Where these days the stock are bred to buck making it tough for new competitors to improve to the levels of the high-quality stock Hoping the future of rodeo is full of more cowboys, and maybe even rodeo on TV here in Australia
An induction into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame isn’t lost on John, after 50 years in Rodeo “I feel honoured to be put in there, because I was just doing what I like doing and most of it was just helping wherever I could with the sport of rodeo ”

Mike Kenyon’s first foray into rodeo photography, started with a Frank Sinatra concert in 1974 Yes, a Frank Sinatra concert, where he was photographing the concert, including an image of a lady on a swing That image caught the eye of Marie (Rushka) Davis, who reached out and invited Mike to come and photograph a rodeo at Bozley Park in Sydney in 1975. He was hooked on photographing rodeo from that day. Taking a moment to thank the cowboys like Dave Johnston who took the time to help guide him with the best shots, and what the cowboys would buy To the degree, that even now, he has cowboys reaching out to purchase images he took up to 40 years ago.
A long history of documenting rodeo has led to many achievements for Mike, including highlights like heading over to the USA in 1976, with the Australian Rodeo team for the bicentennial where he photographed the likes of Neville McCarthy steer wrestling at Reno Rodeo and capturing bareback riding legend Joe Alexander. Another key moment was photographing the legendary Chainsaw at the finals in 1989. The bull that only ever saw 9 cowboys cover him. Mike had been off having some lunch and it was as he was coming back to the arena, he grabbed his camera ready to go for Darren Brandenburg on Chainsaw and managed to capture the epic moment Chainsaw jumped high and sideways.
Mike has not only captured the history of rodeo as its evolved into what we see today, he’s lived it along with the cowboys and cowgirls Telling stories of the friends he’s made along the way and how the rodeo community has changed over the years but there’s still that sense of community, that helps each other out. Times where cars had broken down, and the kindness of those who just told him to jump in, welcoming him along with them. Building friendships like those, paved the way for Mike to photograph many cowboy weddings, which often brought things full circle as he began to photograph their children and their children’s children in the rodeo arena
Mike shared some of the history of how rodeo photography used to make its way to the world. Crediting Journalist and Editor, Bob Howarth for demonstrating what it meant to share photographs with the world like film being sent via pilot with a bottle of whiskey and a phone number for pickup, to make it into the papers. A far cry from rodeo photography these days where digital cameras and computers make it as simple as emailing a link.
When asked how he feels about his induction into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, Mike shared that it’s an honour Before continuing to tell the stories of others over his years of rodeo photography. Not one to focus on himself, as he has a lifetime of telling other’s stories through his pictures. Mike did however, take a moment to thank Bob for the life he gave him on rodeo road.

Ray Townsend moved to Australia from Flordia, USA at the age of 34 The Townsend family were cattle producers in Florida and the land down under offered promise and opportunity that they couldn’t find in America Ray’s wife Elsie (97) remembers it well “They wanted to expand and have more land for cattle At the time Florida was continually being sectioned into smaller and smaller parcels of land and there was a really good incentive to move to Australia with the big parcels of land, and really cheap loans ”
With no property lined up, Ray and his Wife Elsie boarded a ship to Australia with their 5 kids in tow. “Oh my goodness it was daunting!” Exclaimed Elsie in her still very thick American accent, “but nothing about my life has been easy.” When they hit Australian soil they bought camping gear and set off travelling, stopping and asking at every real estate agency about prospective properties The Townsends would make it all the way to Darwin where they eventually purchased Stapelton station, two and half hours southwest of the NT capital
In the USA Ray had a background in the Navy and “he put on a few rodeos here and there ” An acquisition of 37 acres on the outskirts of Darwin, provided a base for Elsie and the children while they attended school and it would go on to become known as Circle T The Darwin Show Society approached Ray asking for help to put on a rodeo as the Queen was coming to town and just like that Ray was back putting on rodeos
It took several years, but Ray built a rodeo arena at Circle T unlike anything that had been seen in Australia before It was oval shaped and smaller, with the bucking chutes along one side and the dogging chutes on one end “It was truly set up with the spectators in mind. We even had seating, we had got lucky and the local outdoor picture theatre closed down and gave us all of their old fold up canvas chairs.” Ray drew on his American heritage and rodeo experiences to bring new ideas to Australian rodeo. In an era where rodeo arenas where hard natural pans, Ray ploughed his surface before every rodeo. “I remember one year we planted sweet potato in the arena after the rodeos had finished for the season,” laughed Elsie.
Ray’s rodeos were nothing short of accommodating. “Many of the local fellows wouldn’t have any of their own gear, Ray just had a pile of riggins and bull ropes for them to use. He even brought over two of the American bronc saddles for them to try, back when the Australians were still using the old stock saddles.” Of all Ray’s American ideas, implementing the addback to the entry fees is likely his most iconic. “That was his commitment to the cowboys for coming to his rodeos, that whenever they nominated the money would go back into the prizemoney.”
The idea was appreciated by cowboys. Elsie remembers a travelling cowboy telling her “Well that should help me buy some tyres ” As the road to Darwin was dirt and rough “They used to do a lot of tyres getting to our rodeo ” For 12 years, Ray and Elsie ran rodeos at Circle T “We owned all our own bucking stock We bought a lot in, and we were breeding brahman cross bucking bulls on the station Ray would judge and I would keep time We met a lot of good people in those 12 years ”
They would eventually pass their rodeo over to the Rotary Club in Darwin and it was then moved into the Robbie Robbins Reserve, at which it ran for many years as part of the northern run of rodeos. Ray passed away in 2011, but today’s cowboys can thank him for introducing smaller arenas, ploughed surfaces and addback. He would be “really, really proud” of his Hall of Fame induction says his daughter Modina. “He just loved cowboying up, he just absolutely loved it. He was always a cowboy.”
The Deniliquin Rodeo’s origins date back to 1948, when the late Jack Maxwell allowed some local youngsters to ride his poddy calves. This soon escalated to steers. And then they delved into Jack’s paddock of horses, picking out the fiery ones to test their skills. Bob Ballett, a drover, and saddler Alex McDonald, noticed that these events were attracting big crowds of spectators and so in 1951 the North Deniliquin Rodeo Committee was formed, and the first full rodeo was run
The committee began putting together their own bucking string of horses and purchased its own gear Most of the horses originated from the stock reserves north of town or were donated by local farmers who had come to realise the horses that they had purchased or bred could not be broken nor were they suitable for riding steeds The rodeo made an early home at the Deniliquin showgrounds and then later at the Paringa Caravan Park, and then the Memorial Park
In 1980 construction of a purpose-built rodeo arena at the Racecourse Reserve began, led heavily by the then Committee President, Steve Bradshaw Finally, the Deniliquin Rodeo had a permanent home and has remained there ever since “The rodeo had been pushed around different venues throughout town prior to that, and Steve was instrumental in gaining us grants and the land to be able to put down some roots and build our facility,” acknowledged Alan Calderwood Alan, the current secretary and treasurer has held a committee position for “the best part of 40 years,” and credits the Deniliquin Rodeo’s stamina and continuation through the tougher times to having “some really dedicated presidents over the years. And great local support!”
Garnering the reputation as ‘Australia’s biggest little rodeo, Deniliquin Rodeo attracted the biggest names with cowboys such as Alan Woods, Ray Crawford and Bonny Young competing in the early days. Garry McPhees’ appointment as stock contractor in 1978, would lead to the infamous bucking bull Chainsaw gracing the Deniliquin rodeo arena. Twice, the Deniliquin crowd witnessed a cowboy make the eight second whistle on the renowned bull. A rare treat, considering he was only ridden a handful of times throughout his whole career.
From Chainsaw to hosting rounds of the NFR in the 90’s, Deniliquin Rodeo has continued to evolve and reinvent itself to remain a regular must-attend event on the APRA calendar. While Alan admits, like many events, they struggle for committee members at times, “we have great local support! Our sponsors are great, every year they just say yes to our requests whether it’s sand for the arena or help to build a shed, they just say yes.” The Hall of Fame induction is “very satisfying. We are very grateful to have been recognised by the APRA for all of the hard work and effort we have put in over the years.”
The Southern Cross Rodeo Circuit encompasses the entire state of Victoria It is one of the most rodeo and member dense circuits in the APRA, consistently attracting enormous crowds and new rodeo listings.
Typically, the SCRC season of rodeos runs from Dec through to late April While the SCRC has a strong member base, help is needed to allow members to truly reap the benefits of living in such a rodeo rich circuit. SCRC committee member Jan Parker said they are desperately seeking members to join the committee and offer their time and skills. Please reach out to Jan if you are interested and feel that you have something to offer. The committee is looking to hold an AGM in the near future in preparation for the upcoming 25/26 season

Item 15
Rationale: This proposed amendment to Rule 35.27 seeks to formally recognise Ranch Bronc Riding within the APRA Rule Book. This inclusion offers a consistent framework for how the discipline is defined and delivered without impacting the existing Station Saddle Buckjump format. With growing interest, the amendment supports committees wishing to feature Ranch Bronc as an in-house event and facilitates the alignment of insurance and compliance requirements necessary for event approval.
Current wording:
“This is a one handed, 8 second contest, riding to be done in a traditional flap style stock saddle or a stock fender saddle. Saddles must include either a cropper or back cinch.”
Proposed amended wording:
“This is a one handed, 8 second contest, riding to be done in a traditional flap style stock saddle or a stock fender saddle. Saddles must include either a cropper or back cinch
(For Ranch Bronc Riding: This is an 8 second contest, riding to be done in a standard ranch working saddle, either a swell-fork or slick-fork with bucking rolls is allowed Saddles must include a back cinch Rider may use free hand to hold onto horn, cantle, nightlatch or coiled rope secured to saddle. No Mark-out is required. Loss of rein is DQ, Helmets & vests mandatory).“
