60 Years Strong Born of Australia’s deep, enduring love of dance and culture of storytelling, The Australian Ballet has been delighting audiences through the power of dance for 60 years. In addition to honouring and reimagining the classics, The Australian Ballet innovates beyond ballet’s rich tradition – presenting works by the most exciting choreographers in the world, nurturing Australian choreographic leaders of tomorrow, and commissioning new works to ensure ballet remains a vital force in Australia and around the world. Throughout our history, The Australian Ballet has regularly represented Australia on the world stage – performing to critical acclaim in 88 cities, including New York, Shanghai, Tokyo, Paris and, of course, London. As celebrations for our 60th anniversary get underway and we set our sights on the next decade, we look forward to bringing The Australian Ballet back to our audiences in the United Kingdom (UK) and internationally.

A new era of artistic leadership 2021 heralded a dynamic new era for The Australian Ballet as David Hallberg, our first new Artistic Director in 20 years, took the reins and began to forge a new creative path forward for the company.

David has achieved so much in his extraordinary career to date and his unique artistic and global view is now bringing a thrilling new dimension to his leadership of The Australian Ballet.

From making history as the first American to join the Bolshoi Ballet as principal while also a principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre, to guesting with The Royal Ballet and The Australian Ballet, David established himself as one of the finest dancers of his generation. His performances have captivated audiences in every corner of the world.

Today, he is directing his boundless creativity and energy towards realising the true potential of The Australian Ballet’s dancers, repertoire, expanding our touring footprint, and deepening our engagement with communities beyond the stage.

“ The support of philanthropy at The Australian Ballet is unparalleled, and our relationships are deeply meaningful. We come together to celebrate our shared passion for world-class dance.” David Hallberg Artistic Director

Dancing on the world stage The Australian Ballet finds itself in a period of great transformation under David Hallberg’s new and vibrant creative direction.

Central to David’s artistic vision for The Australian Ballet is his ambition to reintroduce the company to the places he had the pleasure of dancing during his stellar career, to reinforce our reputation for excellence as a proud cultural ambassador for Australia on the world stage. In doing so, the company will showcase a new gold standard of technical and artistic excellence with an expanded and diverse repertoire performed in the company’s uniquely Australian style.

The Australian Ballet Foundation (UK)

The rich tradition of The Australian Ballet performing in the UK began in 1965, with subsequent tours in 1973, 1976, 1988, 1992, 2005, 2008 and 2016. Throughout this time, our special relationship with the UK has been sustained and strengthened through the support and devotion of a local community of ballet enthusiasts who share a great affection for the artistry and art form.

The Australian Ballet greatly values its UK-based community and aspires to establish a more permanent link to the company for all our supporters in the country to further strengthen those relationships.

To support our growing ambitions in the UK and internationally, the company has set up The Australian Ballet Foundation (UK) – a local entity to support tax-effective fundraising in the UK. Established in 2022, The Australian Ballet Foundation (UK) is a sub-committee of The Australian Ballet Board, with Directors based in Australia and the UK. Comprised of community leaders, philanthropists and The Australian Ballet leadership, the Foundation will support fundraising for projects and facilitate introductions to foster relationships that will be beneficial to The Australian Ballet.
