2025 Austin Seminary Annual Report

For the glory of God and to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, Austin Presbyterian

Theological Seminary is a seminary in the Presbyterian-Reformed tradition whose mission is to educate and equip people for ordained Christian ministry and other forms of Christian service and leadership; to employ its resources for the nurture of the church; to practice and promote critical theological thought and research; to engage a range of voices and perspectives within and beyond the life of the Seminary; and to be a winsome and exemplary community of God's people.

Message from the President

Dear Austin Seminary Alumni and Friends,

Responding to the larger questions induced by our socio-political, technological, and religious environment requires theological institutions to stay true to their deeply rooted values while remaining flexible enough to adapt to paradigmatic shifts. Navigating the tensions within the human community caused by cultural and ideological differences will continue to be a key focus of Christian ministry in the years ahead. Seminaries will serve as effective centers of formation in this context if we prepare learners to transcend borders as a spiritual discipline. At Austin Seminary, we aim to meet this challenge by equipping leaders with the tools required to build bridges that cross the divide created by modern forms of separation—separation from one another, from the natural world, and from the ultimate source of meaning known to us through God in Jesus Christ.

With this report, we are reintroducing you to Austin Seminary’s refreshed brand identity. However, the brand is much more than a fresh look and inspiring messaging. In it, you will see a representation of our commitment to embrace diverse perspectives and to continue to cultivate innovative forms of service for the church and the world. A new MDiv-Master of Business Administration joint program in collaboration with Schreiner University expands the portfolio of academic offerings for those preparing to engage in church leadership and practice institutional revitalization with robust administrative skills. Along with our traditional MDiv-Master of Science in Social Work degree offered in collaboration with The University of Texas at Austin, these dual degrees will foster skill sets for ministry and facilitate bi-vocational opportunities for pastoral leaders. In partnership with Huston-Tillotson University, we also created an accelerated degree path for young people who discern a pastoral vocation while in college.

Alongside these academic programs created through new collaborations, Austin Seminary faculty have sought and secured research grants to promote the tenets of our institutional vision. To nurture a new generation of Christian leaders, Austin Seminary has established the Faithful Preaching Project and Children’s Sermons by Children. As a seminary “in the borderlands,” grants have been obtained to afford faculty an immersive experience in the Mexico-Texas border, to allow the Seminary to study modern imperial violence and trauma within the framework of biblical interpretation, and to explore, in comparative perspective, the baptismal practices of the Orthodox and Reformed traditions. To pursue the goal of strengthening ministry through partnerships and mission, the Seminary established the Austin Story Project. This project strives to build a vibrant network of trained storytellers who are engaging congregations, church organizations, leaders, and young adults in the public communication of their faith.

With your continued support and encouragement, we were able to embrace this work, firmly convinced that Christian faith and witness are boundless. Thank you, and as always, I invite you to join us as we continue to move forward with this vision at Austin Seminary, where faith intersects purpose.

Faithfully,

Message from the Board Chair

I rarely step foot on campus without dropping a tear. This has been true since my time as a secondcareer commuter student from 2007 to 2011. For four years, I rushed to campus from my law office, praying to find a parking spot by the Smoot Center before clawing up the back stairs of McMillan and sliding into class just in time. Because every academic lecture from our outstanding faculty at some point turned into a sermon, I regularly encountered the majesty and mystery of our great God. Whether in a class on theology, biblical exegesis, preaching, pastoral care, or missions, the inbreaking of God’s Spirit was certain, prevalent, and powerful. These sacred moments prompted tears of joy, wonder, or holy fear of an awesome God whose love for this whole world oozes from Genesis to Revelation. Even after graduation, the potency of my theological education at Austin Seminary persists. I regularly attend MidWinter Lectures, the HESED Conference, and other special events where the insights of our faculty and guest lecturers usher in the presence of God anew and move me to fresh tears. President José R. Irizarry started the 2024-2025 academic year reminding the Seminary community of the power of worship songs. Congregational singing builds unity in the church and serves as the only space in our society that keeps our Christian hopes and visions alive. The President reminded us that chains break apart, cell doors open, and oppressors are set free when believers find a song to sing together. During our board gatherings, Dean Margaret Aymer’s fresh interpretations of the Ethiopian eunuch and the Syrophoenician woman inspired all trustees. I was personally encouraged this year by the Rev. Dr. Crystal Silva-McCormick who warned a room full of Christian leaders that if our safety comes at someone else’s distress or financial insecurity, then we must reject it, because Christianity pursues safety and security for every human being.

In addition to these few examples, God’s presence and power has enveloped the Seminary community in a multitude of dynamic ways this year including, but not limited to the following:

▶ At the Commencement ceremony in May, 38 master’s and 2 doctoral degrees were conferred on outstanding graduates who are prepared to love the world with boldness and who are determined to embrace our times with the audacity of hope.

▶ We announced a strategic partnership with Huston-Tillotson University, offering students an opportunity to complete baccalaureate and Master of Divinity degrees in six years.

▶ This summer, we welcomed five new doctoral students, and in the fall, 33 new master’s students, including two pursuing a MDiv/MBA dual degree with Schreiner University and four pursuing a MDiv/MSSW with The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work. This is our largest incoming class since before COVID.

▶ This past spring, we celebrated with the Rev. Dr. Gregory L. Cuéllar who was promoted to full professor and installed in the Ruth A. Campbell Chair of Biblical Studies. We also celebrated with three faculty members who published books in 2024, Professor David H. Jensen, Professor Donghyun Jeong (2 books), and Professor William Greenway.

▶ With a grant from the Lilly Foundation, the Sharing Faith Initiative added Children’s Sermons by Children. The Sharing Faith Initiative is also home to the Faithful Preaching Project, which was launched last year.

▶ With another grant from the Lilly Foundation, we launched the Austin Story Project. This project is building a vibrant network of trained storytellers comprised of congregational leaders, young adults, and independent visionaries.

▶ We refreshed our logo and brand guidelines to visually stress the Seminary’s vital intersection between call and practice, and we have embraced a new tag line: “where faith intersects purpose.” This is a captivating shorthand of the Seminary’s mission statement.

Looking ahead, the Board of Trustees has launched a strategic planning initiative to discern best practices for achieving the Seminary’s mission to educate and equip people for ordained Christian ministry and other forms of Christian service and leadership. Together, we are examining the Seminary’s ecclesial commitments, academic commitments, socio-cultural commitments, theological affirmations, and available resources.

My board colleagues bring a wealth of wisdom, love, and cooperation to this strategic planning endeavor, the end goal of which is to define how the Seminary will best serve the next generation of Christian leaders. I have every expectation that, like me, the new generation of Christian leaders served by Austin Seminary regularly will dab their own eyes. Here, learners cannot help but be captivated by the regular inbreaking of God’s certain, prevalent, and powerful Spirit that is the eternal source of our abiding hope.

In closing, thank you for your loving and generous support of Austin Seminary. You make us who we are.

Big Love,

The Rev. Denise Nance Pierce

It’s a Brand New Day

In June 2025, Austin Seminary proudly unveiled its refreshed brand. This marks an inspiring new chapter that honors the Seminary’s heritage while embracing the bold vision of living into its identity as a borderlands seminary. A launch event in August 2025 brought together students, faculty, alumni, and friends to celebrate a renewed identity rooted in our commitment to faith, learning, and justice at the intersections of culture and community. Through our updated visual identity and messaging, we reaffirmed who we are: a seminary that nurtures imaginative, courageous leaders for the church and the world, grounded in hope and engaged with the urgent realities of our time.

LIVING THE MISSION:

2025 Graduate Feature

Tashara Angelle’s Austin Seminary journey began nearly 14 years ago at Discovery Weekend. Sitting in on a New Testament course, she was struck by the open, fearless approach to Scripture. “It was great to see the professor and students not be afraid to ask questions and be okay with there being no one right answer,” Tashara affirmed. “I knew that this would be the place for me.” At the time, she was teaching in public schools and sensed it wasn’t quite the right season to enroll. But in 2021, God’s call became unmistakable,

and her earlier seminary experience made Austin Seminary the clear choice, especially with the faculty and staff’s understanding of life as a student and a parent.

Throughout her studies, countless moments affirmed her call to ministry, but co-chairing the HESED Lecture Series1 stands out. Coordinating keynote speakers, managing logistics, and creating space for conversations about justice allowed her to experience the administrative and deeply spiritual sides of ministry. “If I just do the work that I

feel God is calling me to do, no matter what happens,” Tashara reflected, “then God will show up and touch the lives that God desires to touch.” Several professors left an indelible mark. Dr. Suzie Park’s Hebrew Bible course gave her a framework for wrestling with big questions of hermeneutics and application. The Rev. Dr. Jennifer Lord’s passion for liturgy not only expanded her understanding of worship but also played a role in her decision to join the Episcopal Church. “Learning the history behind liturgy helped me feel a deeper connection to the seemingly small actions we take in worship,” she noted.

Spiritually grounded by the steadfast support of her husband and a close-knit network of Seminary friends, Tashara is committed to living into her call to parish ministry. She holds a passion for preaching, teaching, and racial reconciliation. In time, she hopes to pursue further graduate studies in theology or homiletics.

“Austin Seminary is a truly special place,” Tashara says. “I’m grateful for the alumni, faculty, donors, and friends whose financial, academic, and spiritual support made it possible for me—a wife and mom of two—to follow God’s voice, complete my MDiv, and serve in the ministry God called me to.”

Tashara Angelle graduated with a Master of Divinity in May. At Commencement, she received the David L. Stitt Fellowship and the Charles L. King Award for Excellence in Preaching. Tashara lives in Austin with her husband, Alvan Angelle, Jr. and two children. She is a Postulant for Holy Orders in the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, completing Clinical Pastoral Education at Ascension Seton, and preparing to begin a Diploma in Anglican Studies at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest.

1. HESED (דסֶחֶ ) is a Hebrew word, often translated as love, mercy, faithfulness. The HESED Lecture Series is held every spring and coordinated by student leaders.

Lifelong Learning

The Center for Lifelong Learning has much to celebrate as it reflects on the past academic year. When Sean Watkins, associate dean for Lifelong Learning, stepped into the role, he felt the fierce urgency of two learning curves: the culture of Austin Seminary and the necessity of engaging with an increasingly polarized nation, both of which are integral to the department.

The Center spent six months listening to students, staff, and faculty. It identified core focus areas for creating resources: culture (race and ethnicity), interpersonal relationships (conflict resolution, social justice, etc.), history (truth-telling), land and resource stewardship (environmental ethics), and the grace—given and received—not to regret the past or hide it, but rather to learn from it and grow into the best versions of ourselves.

These core focus areas are reflected in the events the Center hosted over the course of the year. The first was Politics and Faith, featuring a panel of five Austin Seminary faculty members (Dr. Rod Caruthers, Rev. Dr. Crystal Silva-McCormick, Rev. Dr. Sarah Allen, Dr. Patricia Bonilla, and Dr. Ángel Gallardo). They addressed questions from the audience and provided a hopeful framework for understanding how faith and politics should interact—through conversation rather than avoidance or exploitation.

Next, the Center honored Austin Seminary alum and former professor, the late Rev. Dr. Jorge Lara-Braud, by hosting the launch of his biography, Dare to Adventure: The Life of Jorge Lara-Braud, written by his widow, Grethcen Lara-Shartle. The work leading up to this event upholding his legacy, embodying the principles of Lifelong Learning, and the highest levels of excellence from the library and archives team, led the Lara-Braud family to donate most of Jorge’s papers to the institution. This donation will allow future generations to learn about prophetic leadership in a particular context.

In addition to hosting numerous events for Hispanic Heritage and Black History Month, the Center continued its flagship program, Cultivating Ideas, a monthly webinar series featuring Austin Seminary faculty. In the upcoming academic year, the Center plans to expand offerings with three additional certificates and to host events for the LGBTQ+, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities. The goal is that every voice at every table feels seen, heard, believed, and valued. When equity is dictated and demonstrated, it fosters a true journey of lifelong learning that is appealing and essential for all.

The 787 Collective creates new ways for young adults and communities of faith to be in relationship with one another. It is through this partnership that mutual transformation toward healing and wholeness is possible. The following highlights how the 787 Collective advanced its purpose during the 2024–2025 academic year:

This year, the 787 Collective created and produced sixteen episodes of their podcast, The Collective Voice. The podcast centers young adult voices in the conversation about the church, ministry, and what young adults need for spiritual formation. Guests included associate pastors at big churches, campus ministers, graduate students, and founders of third spaces.

The Next Is Now initiative identified three key intervention strategies to prevent young adults from losing their connection to church in the transition from college::

1. A curriculum to prepare college seniors for ongoing faith formation.

2. Tools to help congregations evaluate their readiness to welcome and support young adults and to foster intergenerational learning and collaboration.

The Reverend Dr. Carolyn Helsel, Associate Professor in the Blair Monie Distinguished Chair in Homiletics and director of the Sharing Faith Initiative, launched the Faithful Preaching Project in January of 2024 with a $1.28 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. Kelley DeCleene was hired to serve as Program Coordinator for the project. After conducting interviews with MidWinter Lectures attendees, Helsel put together a list of the most commonly cited descriptors of sermons that help listeners grow in faith. The qualities of “faith-full” preaching became the curriculum for the two cohorts launched in the summer of 2024: one for clergy of small congregations, and another for lay preachers.

Sixteen clergy participated in the first of two years of their cohort experience, including two retreats to Mo-Ranch. Fifteen lay preachers joined the lay preaching cohort, which met twice as often online as the clergy cohort, and concluded in May. Of these lay preachers, 10 continued to meet in an alumni lay preacher group this fall to keep supporting one another in their preaching.

The Faithful Preaching Project also offered two workshops to

3. A group for recent college graduates and a post-graduation curriculum focused on spiritual and vocational integration.

More than 30 judicatory leaders participated in webinars to learn from the research, and in the fall of 2025, it was implemented by five campus ministries.

Recognizing that young adults who do not see someone like themselves in church often feel like they may not have a place there, the Collective Threads initiative strives to help keep young adults in ministry thriving. The 787 Collective facilitated a pilot program of this supportive cohort for young adults serving in congregational ministry across Fort Worth. The program is expected to expand in 2025-26.

The 787 Collective also launched a Young Adult Ministry Track at the Progressive Youth Ministry Conference.

A prototype of Young Adult Pilgrimages was designed and created by the 787 Collective. These pilgrimages are designed to help young adults new to a city explore an untold part of its history through a thoughtful, reflective journey led by young adult Christians, and to form relationships.

Director of Congregational Innovation, Rev. Phil Dieke, gives leadership to The 787 Collective. The initiative is funded by Lilly Endowment Inc.

the broader community: one in the fall, attended by 51 persons, both in-person and online, and a second in the spring, with 37 attendees, including both in-person and online participants. Additionally, a monthly newsletter was sent to the broader community starting in the spring of 2024.

In the fall of 2024, Helsel learned that she had received a second Lilly grant for the Children’s Sermons by Children program, which aims to help churches equip children aged 8-12 to deliver children’s sermons. With this second program, rather than create a second newsletter, the two programs were combined under a larger theme: “The Sharing Faith Initiative.” Amanda Herridge was hired in the summer of 2025 to support the work of both programs, with a specialization in launching the Listening Tour for the Children’s Sermons by Children program.

In addition to the monthly newsletter, the Sharing Faith team launched a new website to communicate about the grant programs and to facilitate recruitment to events and cohorts. For more information, please visit sharingfaith. austinseminary.edu or sharingfaithinitiative.com 787collective.org

The human brain is wired for stories. Stories are used to entertain, sell, motivate, and persuade. When we don’t know the why of something, we may make up a story. What do you remember of a sermon? Likely, it’s a story the preacher told. Stories can be powerful.

The Austin Story Project is part of a nation-wide movement to create a fresh wave of storytelling about the vibrancy and hope of Christian faith and life. The project is grounded in three affirmations: Christian story is relational; Christian story is transformative; Christian story enchants. It is not about producing content, but about the experience of telling and listening to the stories of Jesus through the stories of our lives in community.

The Project cultivates a network of trained storytellers among congregations, church-related organizations, independent leaders, and young adults. They will learn to testify, to lead groups in sharing stories of life enchanted by the Holy, and to convene larger publics for storytelling and reflection. Their commitment includes three storytelling events each. The events are designed to help storytellers become lifelong leaders of transformational storytelling that illumines God’s life among us. The network will form a grassroots distribution

system for the dissemination of stories that the Seminary project itself will curate and produce.

Work for the Austin Story Project began in January 2025, and is off to a great start.

▶ From among 90 applicants, 29 congregations, organizations, and independent practitioners were chosen to be trained as the first members of the network.

▶ The first film in the Luminous Christians series was produced. It focused on Fumi Tosu, director of a Catholic worker house.

▶ A young adult pilgrimage was piloted to learn how young adults might connect with the Christian story through the practice of pilgrimage, framed in ritual and storytelling.

▶ The “In Real Life” process was launched for small groups. The process structures a 90-minute meeting, which includes a prompt for a story about an experience—Tell about an important meal in your life. Followed by a story from Jesus’ experience—his last meal with his friends. Then the question is, what is the invitation for you?

▶ An evaluation plan was designed to help learn what happens when people tell stories this way. An early comment from a young adult facilitator in the test group was exciting. “I thought this would be an interesting gig,” he said. “Yesterday I realized. This is going to form me.”

Over the past year, Progressive Youth Ministry (PYM) has found fresh momentum in its new home at Austin Seminary, under the leadership of Dr. Andrew Zirschky and an advisory board of seminary and nonseminary leaders.

In November 2024, they relaunched the PYM Conference after a five-year hiatus, gathering about 190 participants from across the country. Shaped around the theme “Defiant Hope,” the conference featured keynote voices such as Cláudio Carvalhaes, Lakisha Lockhart, and Andrew Root, alongside 15+ creative workshops that fostered relational connections, and a vibrant exhibit hall with 20 organizations represented. The event also built community through a Yard Party held on the chapel lawn, bringing together PYM participants and the Seminary community for a night of fun and entertainment.

Beyond the conference, PYM sponsored three author conversations, which were streamed live on Facebook. As a result, our private Facebook group grew by 18% to over 4,000 members. They launched Flourish: A Journal of Progressive Ministry, supported in part by a grant from Flagler College’s Missing Voices Project. Flourish will appear annually in print, while

publishing monthly online articles. Other efforts include beta testing two AI-driven chatbots: the PYM Wisdom Well, which synthesizes years of PYM Facebook discussions, and a risk management tool that creates safety checklists for ministry events. Academic integration has included two courses, offering Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Youth Ministry (MAYM) students opportunities for conference participation and leadership, with MAYM graduates presenting micro-talks on youth ministry at the conference.

Looking ahead, on November 13-15, the 2025 PYM Conference will expand to 30+ exhibitors in a splitvenue format at Austin Seminary and University United Methodist Church. Anchored in the theme “Resistance is Love,” the gathering will feature keynote speakers such as Brian McLaren, Patrick Reyes, Kenda Creasy Dean, and Stephen Cady, along with dedicated tracks for those ministering to children, adolescents, and young adults. PYM remains devoted to equipping leaders to guide young people into a faith that is just, inclusive, and compassionate in the ways of Jesus.

CONGREGATIONS BUILDING GREATER POSSIBILITY.

Hope feels fleeting in a time when change seems the only constant. For over three years, Houses of Hope has walked alongside small-town and rural congregations through their transition to the next most hopeful step. Through the Houses of Hope process of Christian practices, storytelling, and deepening relationships, they learned:

• New ways to pray, practice gratitude, grow in compassion, and relate to one another.

New ways to connect with the community outside their church.

New perspectives on their church’s story.

How to build a culture of equity, belonging, and mutual understanding.

• How to use peer learning and accountability practices regarding spiritual life.

How to practice discernment for the life and function of the church.

How to increase social awareness and nurture empathetic leadership.

“Houses of Hope is like unlearning the ways of the world and once again being invited to follow the ways of Christ.”

Rev. Kevin Downer (MDiv’06) First Congregational Church, Woodstock, CT

Houses of Hope shifts the Seminary from a transactional to a relational connection with these small congregations. This takes time to garner trust and help the congregation gain confidence in the process. Houses of Hope continues expanding their reach, mainly through relationships with judicatory and denominational officers who understand the needs of the churches they serve.

Congregations served by Houses of Hope in 2024-25: Presbyterian Church of Salado; Faith Lutheran, McDade, TX; First Christian Church, Burkburnett, TX; First Congregational Church of Woodstock, CT; First Presbyterian Church, Palacios, TX; Fredonia Presbyterian Church, NY; Rolling Hills Community Church, Lago Vista, TX; Second Congregational Church of Coventry, CT.

Director of Congregational Innovation, Rev. Phil Dieke, gives leadership to Houses of Hope. The initiative is funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc.

Sustaining the Mission

In fiscal year 2025, Austin Seminary demonstrated notable financial strength, and we are grateful for past and current donors whose generosity continues to support the Seminary’s mission. Despite ongoing market volatility—a point our investment consultants remind us of often—the Seminary’s careful stewardship of both investments and operating funds has helped us maintain a strong financial position. While the Seminary’s books remain under audit, we can report that the endowment stands at a record high of approximately $170 million.

Collaboration with partner organizations is central to fulfilling our mission. Grant income totaling $8 million this year opened new opportunities to work creatively to enhance programs in storytelling, preaching, youth engagement, and borderland ministry.

These financial statements reflect the exceptional care and stewardship demonstrated by management with the oversight of the Board of Trustees in preserving and growing the assets of Austin Seminary. Today, the Seminary is more than a classroom for those pursuing a master’s degree. It is a vibrant learning hub for students, churches, and all who seek to engage their faith more deeply. The future is bright, and we are encouraged and invigorated as we continue to build bridges and forge new opportunities.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Thank you for counting yourselves among our supporters. You understand the possibilities made real by educated, equipped, and interconnected Christian leaders. When Austin Seminary alumni are called to serve, individuals, churches, and communities are strengthened. Through their leadership, borders that divide are bridged. In the Spirit of Christ, they bring reassuring mercy, healing presence, and advocacy for justice. This is the sacred work your donations support.

Recently, one of our alumni asked me about my use of the word “sacred” as an adjective to describe the labor implicit in the mission of Austin Seminary. From the medieval writings of Meister Eckhart to the contemporary theology of Catherine Keller, as well as the reflections of our own Professor Bill Greenway on agape as the ground of being, we exist and have our being in the unmerited grace of God—God who is “equally near in all creatures” (Eckhart, Sermon on Luke 21:31). The sacred is present. It pervades everything and everyone, yet we live in a world where powerful forces attempt to separate us from one another. We witness acts of hatred against neighbor and acutely feel an insidious estrangement. Thus, we long for the restorative healing of all things; we seek to know the sacred more fully.

In this time, our communities need leaders who are schooled in critical theological thought, preachers who are equipped to engage a range of voices and perspectives, and Christian servants who are committed to living a winsome and exemplary life. Every individual, congregational, and organizational name presented in this remarkable list of supporters embodies the hope of theological education at Austin Seminary. Our work is animated by the gospel of Jesus Christ and dependent on the generous donations of those listed here. On behalf of this community of bridge builders, thank you!

Most sincerely,

THANK YOU

Give More by Giving Securities

As you consider year-end charitable giving, think about donating appreciated securities instead of cash. Contributing publicly traded stocks, bonds, or mutual funds held for more than one year can yield multiple benefits.

You are providing support for Austin Seminary’s next generation of Christian leaders.

You will receive an income tax deduction for the full value of the assets rather than what you paid for them.

You avoid having to pay capital gains tax on the increase in value.

• You can carry forward any unused deduction for up to five additional years.

• You can then repurchase the same securities at the current market price, effectively locking in a new, higher cost basis.

If you want to enjoy the tax benefits on your 2025 tax return, your gift must be completed by December 31. Securities gifts are easy to make. Contact Ryan Arnold, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, by phone at 512-404-4807, or by email at rarnold@ austinseminary.edu for more information.
