Gifts of Grace. For everyone.

The theme for the 2020-2021 academic year comes from John. “I pray that they may all be one (17:21),” while always appropriate, now seems particularly fitting. Together as we all overcome the many challenges of the pandemic on campus and off, learning in class or at home, adjusting schedules and expectations, we find grit and resiliency in the Augustinian charism of unitas

As we remain focused on our shared purpose and mission to inspire hearts to unite, minds to inquire, and hands to serve, we grow in strength as a community, both collectively and individually, following in the footsteps of St. Augustine.

And that means everyone. Every. One. Women and Men. Old and Young. Black, white, and every other race, heritage, and origin.

As we face the disruption brought on by Covid -19, and economic challenges, and wildfires, and hurricanes, and polarizing politics, and elections, perhaps nothing is more important than inclusion, and understanding how we must continue to evolve as a nation so we can look past our differences and unite.

Sometimes the act of placing individual needs and selfish desires behind the need of the group can be difficult, particularly in an age when it seems the needs of self are so often celebrated in society.

My thought is that we can have it both ways. In his letter to the Romans (12: 6-8), Paul suggests that we not conform to this world, but rather transform the world by the renewal of our minds, and that we discern what is the will of God for each of us.

We should never think of ourselves above others, but part of a whole, each with specific gifts and duties. We all need to discover our personal Gifts of Grace. And we must support others in their own similar quests. Everyone deserves that chance.

“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given us, let us use them: if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”

With that perspective, we can welcome these challenging times as an Augustinian Journey of transformation. Because it matters.

Whether you are an actor, or an athlete, a musician or a scientist, a class officer or a community volunteer, let’s take this year to discover and develop our individual gifts for the good of ourselves, the good of one another, and for the families and communities in which we live.

Austin Prep Earns Top Marks in Discovering and Implementing an Approach to Remote Teaching and Learning.

Many people have nightmares later in life of being back in school and surprised by a pop quiz for which they haven’t studied. Sometimes it’s enough to wake them up in a cold sweat.

With that in mind imagine what it would be like to learn your entire school was going to be tested in new ways you had never encountered.

Such was the case last March when Austin Prep was confronted with Covid-19 and the need to expeditiously create an online learning process that would enable students to continue their education with minimal disruption.

By the time Governor Charlie Baker announced a three-week suspension of school operations at all public and private elementary and secondary schools in the Commonwealth, plans were already well in place to implement a remote teaching and learning plan at Austin Prep.

The school quickly realized it was a moment in history, and there would not be any best-case studies for reference. It needed a rapid pivot from an educational model that was working well, into something new. A transformative learning platform needed to be created that was cutting edge, not simply recreating Austin Prep’s process in a digital platform.

In the week before the statewide order, members of the Austin Prep Technology Department accelerated an already planned set-up and distribution of over 70 brand new Apple MacBook Air computers, configured with all of the tools needed to teach remotely in case of a school-wide shut down.

Over a period of 48-hours, faculty participated in web tutorials led by the Austin Prep Office of Academic Affairs using the videoconferencing app Zoom Cloud Meetings.

In only three days students were instructed to download the free Zoom Cloud Meetings App on their school issued iPads, and then received Google Calendar invitations from their advisors and teachers with individual links to enter virtual classrooms with their teachers and classmates.

“There was a high energy level as teachers needed to design a roadmap in a short period of time. The faculty were determined and inspired one another to succeed. If something didn’t work, we said OK and tried something else to flip the grid,” said Assistant Head of School and Head of Upper School William Driscoll, Ed.D.’89

“I am extremely proud of and thankful for our faculty who demonstrated ‘continuing education’ in action,” Head of Middle School Michael McLaughlin said.”

Naturally, there was a lot of anxiety within the community around the pandemic and around an unfamiliar model of teaching and learning.

Austin Prep’s Health and Wellness team initiated programming and support to help navigate this anxiety and the uncharted circumstances.

“Our family would like to thank the entire Austin Prep faculty and staff for having the forethought, motivation and ability to get a distance learning program up and running for our students during the coronavirus outbreak,” Mrs. Karen Brabeck P’25 said. “It was important to continue learning but it also provided a sense of stability and ongoing community for students to remain connected with teachers, classmates and friends.”

Faculty members echoed that sentiment. “I am really grateful for the technology that we have at Austin Prep that allows me to be present in the lives of my students during this very challenging time,” English Department Chair Nicole Putney P’26 said.

The 2020-21 academic year picked up where things left off last spring. After nearly six months away from campus, Austin Prep welcomed students back in September under a very comprehensive Reopening Plan.

Teams of administrators worked throughout the summer to recreate, reframe, and reimagine life on campus to keep the Austin Prep community as safe as possible during the global pandemic. Every aspect of the school – from campus arrival and dismissal, to dining hall protocol, and academic schedules – were reevaluated with the health and safety of community members the priority.

“Any decision we make for Austin Prep always relies upon our unwavering commitment to examine challenges through the prism of Austin Prep’s mission, uncompromisingly keep the health and safety of the Austin Prep community paramount and continue to deliver the singular educational experience for which Austin Prep is known,” Head of School James Hickey, Ph.D. said.

Preparations made for both on campus and remote learning were extensive. Campus upgrades in advance of the school year amounted to an investment of nearly $1,000,000, which has included improvements to technology, advanced disinfecting equipment, additional personnel – including a second school nurse – and campus infrastructure such as new HEPA filters and HVAC upgrades.

Additionally, classrooms were set up to mitigate the spread of illness and increase social distancing. Each classroom has unique configurations and distancing, and the School has worked closely with Reading’s Department of Public Health. “The significant investment that we have made in technology will provide students with the opportunity to engage with their classmates and teachers in real time. This technology includes upgrades in cameras and microphones that will enhance the remote learning experience,” Driscoll said.

Parents, who were invited to participate in a community wide webinar shortly after the release of the Reopening Plan in August, were excited to have their children return to campus.

“In such an unsettling time, it gives us great comfort to know that our children were able to return to the Austin Prep campus this fall and have a sense of normalcy,” Amy Sperling, P’22, P’25 said. “It is very clear to us that the School has put a lot of time, effort and resources into a very thorough and safe reopening plan. We are confident that our children are in the hands of caring and capable professional.”

“This is a challenging time, and the strengths of Austin Prep will sustain us through uncertainty,” said Dr. Hickey. “Our commitment to Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas, our sense of community, small class size, and, of course, our faith.”

Together, Administration, faculty, staff, parents and students continue to navigate uncharted waters, and continue the excellence in teaching and learning that Austin Prep is known for.

JOURNEY recently asked Dr. Bill Driscoll ,89, Assistant Head of School and Head of Upper School to share some insights into Austin Prep’s successful approach –

Just as I was reacquainting myself with the Austin Prep of 2020 and not yet officially in my new role, the pandemic became a global crisis. I must admit this kind of transition was not on my radar. I never dreamed I’d need to be part of the solution. Talk about diving into the deep end! I was really pleased with the way Dr. Hickey, Head of the Middle School Michael McLaughlin and countless other faculty, staff and coaches pulled together.

The learning architecture we built had two main goals. First, we needed to build the cognitive, or intellectual piece. We needed to find the best way to transfer academic content.

The faculty was incredibly creative here. Teaching science and math is different from the arts. Our teachers quickly realized that 90-minute Zoom lectures would not be the answer. They collaborated, shared new applications, and tried new things, adapted quickly when there were bumps, and put in an incredible amount of time and effort.

Besides addressing the obvious cognitive needs, we knew there is an emotional component of what makes an Austin Prep educational experience. This includes counseling and extracurricular education. Think of it as Quantitative and Qualitative.

This is a school comprised of 12 to 18-year-old students who need a social life. We tried to also create some kind of ‘campus life’ and foster a sense of community on-line now.

Our College Counseling team continued to support our students and helped them to navigate through their college acceptances. For our Class of 2020 who were entering their final months as seniors, the College Counseling team worked tirelessly to help traverse the higher education process.

I’m happy to report that Austin Prep has been recognized by several other schools as a model of how to create a hybrid on-line and in-person environment.

Perhaps some of the best evidence of this leading edge model happened mid-spring semester when 18 students transferred to Austin Prep from other school districts where the online approach was less than optimal. Despite the economic impact of the pandemic, 214 new students joined our community since last summer, across all grades.

While adhering to all official health and safety guidelines, and closely following the Austin Prep Reopening Plan, we now have 760 students enrolled with a waiting list of students prepared to join the community when there is an opportunity to safely do so.

Celebrating the Class of 2020

After spending months in quarantine and learning remotely due to the Pandemic since March, the Class of 2020 was able to benefit from changes in Commonwealth guidelines in May, allowing for religious services to be held outdoors with appropriate social distancing.

Blessed with some creative thinking and inspired execution, and the full approval of local authorities, Austin Prep safely held a Baccalaureate Mass for the Class of 2020 and their parents on Father Seymour Field, where they were also able to receive their diplomas.

The Mass was celebrated by Most Rev. Mark O’Connell, J.C.D. who told the class that “you have had the strangest senior year of any class in the history of Austin Prep.” While that is hard to argue, students focused on the value of the experience, and to the future.

Class of 2020 valedictorian Cat Bravo, who will attend Harvard University after taking a gap year, joined her friends and classmates at Austin Prep in May for one last time with a positive message:

“It might be tempting to call the end of our story a Shakespearean tragedy, but I don’t see that. We have been part of something special here and made memories that we will hold onto for the rest of our lives. Instead of seeing our ending as a sad one, I choose to see it as a cliffhanger. Our stories have not ended yet!”

And what exciting stories they will be for the 154 graduates who, together, earned some $19 million in scholarships from some of the finest colleges and universities across the United States.

Bowdoin College-bound class salutatorian Jenna Albanese put the disruption into perspective when she said it was more encouraging to think of the times friends had together rather than what was lost. “We have grown stronger from this challenge. I know I have grown more grateful for the moments I would have taken for granted a few months ago.”

Head of School Dr. James Hickey continued the theme that recent events are not the end of the story, but just one small part of a lifetime of rich experiences. He encouraged graduates to not let these difficult times define them. Instead he promised, “You will define these times.”

“I

pray that they may all be one.”

During this year of a pandemic, a competitive election, wildfires and hurricanes, a tough economy, and social unrest, it is sometimes difficult for both individuals and institutions to find their way. Such times often divide people, drawing lines in the sand for so many.

Fortunately, as part of our rich Catholic and Augustinian values, Austin Prep has a road map to navigate these troubled times.

Veritas, Unitas and Caritas is not just a slogan or advertising tagline. It is a guide pointing the way to a clear strategy and tactical plan that is both consistent and integrated. Each value a directive to fulfilling our mission of inspiring hearts to unite, minds to inquire and hands to serve, especially in troubled times.

Using the value of Veritas as part of our guide, Austin Prep strives to create a curriculum where all students have an opportunity to view into new worlds the traditional way, and also have a chance to see themselves reflected in the narrative. This is called a ‘windows and mirrors approach,’ where you see out, but also have a chance to see your story as part of the whole.

Austin Prep believes in advancing our cultural proficiency through faculty and staff professional development. Our faculty have gone through training to help recognize that sometimes even the oldest lessons or texts might include unrecognized biases. This fall twelve members of the faculty participated in webinars with Merrimack College professor Tom Bourdon. The webinar was run by University of Notre Dame, Boston College, NAIS, AISNE, NEASC, and the NCEA. The course focused on building community among the twelve teachers by discussing their experience and comfort level with the topic, followed by work on defining the terms diversity, equity and social justice so that they all have a shared understanding of the terms. During the first week, participants discussed implicit bias as faculty took the Harvard Test. This served to help grapple with issues of race, specifically with the subject of engagement on school campuses. Faculty examined the difference between culture and climate and proposed ideas of how Austin Prep can promote higher levels of engagement for students of color.

Additionally, a delegation of teachers attended the AISNE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Conference on October 19-22. The virtual event included four days of interactive experiences with other independent school leaders across New England, focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion topics in our schools.

The 2020 St. Augustine Lecturer Dr. Crystal Kuykendall continues working with faculty to assist in creating new diversity and inclusion initiatives. She is helping Austin Prep to infuse a true

one.” (John 17:21)

understanding of why diversity is significant, to look past our differences and unite. In October, Dr. Kuykendall met with faculty and students and gave presentations that revolved around our own individual stories, and how we fail to notice stereotypes if we listen to only one story. Dr. Kuykendall closed the presentations emphasizing the importance of CPR: Compassion and Courage, Patience and Persistence, and Respect and Resiliency.

Unitas is found in the addition of new staff who have been hired with a charter to build and strengthen community. Whether it’s virtually visiting museums to explore new cultures, recruiting students and faculty from a wider range of backgrounds, or partnering with local or national organizations, we are looking for ways to improve.

Some students already knew Mr. Jaycob Morales as an outstanding and enthusiastic football and basketball coach, or 7th grade Math teacher. Recently appointed Coordinator of Community Engagement and Inclusion, he is working with students to elevate their exposure to the larger world.

He is well suited to the task. Mr. Morales’, who resides in Lawrence, family immigrated from the Dominican Republic. As a young boy, he was recognized as a promising student which led to scholarships to primary school and Central Catholic High. Wheaton College followed where he excelled in athletics and in class, majoring in Economics.

After graduation, rather than accepting opportunities to work in finance, he wanted to give back to the community. While working and coaching in his hometown boy’s clubs, Mr. Morales connected with Austin Prep Assistant Head of Enrollment and Athletics Jonathan Pollard ’97 who invited him to join the Austin Prep family.

Whether helping coordinate meals with the Dining Hall in celebration of a variety of ethnic heritages, or organizing volunteer projects, Mr. Morales wants students to see a wider world. Limited at present by the pandemic, he eventually hopes to expand this outreach.

Fr. Jorge Reyes, O.S.A. has also joined the staff as the Director of Mission and Inclusion. In collaboration with School Chaplain Fr. Patrick Armano, they strive to create a community where all feel truly welcomed. Fr. Jorge brings a depth of experience working with historically marginalized groups. Most recently, he was in the Archdiocese of Albany where he served as the Director of the Hispanic Apostolate and served the city’s poor. Born in Cuba and raised in Boston, Fr. Reyes has spent much of his career as a pastor in communities of color including in the Dominican Republic and St. Mary of the Assumption in Lawrence. Additionally, Fr. Reyes was the head of a secondary school for several years in the Dominican Republic

Caritas, or charity, is the foundation for building programs that reach beyond the Austin Prep campus to local communities, especially those communities with families in need. Austin Prep is looking for ways to reach our local communities helping young people as tutors. While difficult to launch during the pandemic, notes Mr. Morales, it is part of the overall outreach plan.

The Austin Prep admissions team continues to expand their recruitment efforts to attract students of diverse backgrounds from many communities. With the full support of the Board of Trustees, Austin Prep has awarded more than $1.2 million in scholarships and assistance to students from inner city communities over the last several years.

Dr. Driscoll describes Austin Prep’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts as “a call to action on all fronts, reflecting the national sense of urgency.” It is an extraordinary endeavor to bring our community together as one; to help weather these times as one community.

HANDS TO SERVE.

As an operating room nurse at Mass General Waltham Ambulatory Surgery Center, my worklife was put on hold when the Governor declared a moratorium on elective surgery. During that time, my operating room team and I were deployed to the Respiratory Illness Clinic (RIC) at Mass General Boston to help care for patients with COVID. The RIC was located in what had been the hospital’s ambulance bay. During our time there, we helped guide the wonderful nurses, doctors, and other health care providers through the process of donning and doffing Protective Personal Equipment (masks, goggles, gowns, and gloves) correctly, which is essential for testing COVID patients and to maintain the safety of the healthcare provider. Fortunately, since the ban on elective surgery has been lifted, we have been back in the operating room.

I am an ICU nurse at Mass General Hospital in Boston. Normally, I am a staff nurse in the Surgical/Trauma ICU, but when the surge of COVID cases hit I was deployed to a neurology floor. It had been converted overnight into a medical ICU for COVID patients. My coworkers and doctors were strangers to me when we started, but family to me by the end of my time there. We were bonded together by taking care of some of the sickest patients we had ever seen and put in consistently uncomfortable situations. We united to support each other through the most emotionally challenging times. Often, we were the only people in the room as patients passed away, as families were not allowed in the hospital. I even got to work alongside my sister and mother-in-law on the front lines, something so special I will cherish that memory forever. It has been the most difficult time in my nursing career, no class or clinical could have ever prepared me for what I experienced. However, it has made me a stronger nurse and person.

Late last summer, we asked Austin Prep alumni who have been involved in fighting the pandemic on the front lines to share some of their experiences.
What they had to say is the clearest expression of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas we have ever encountered.

I work as the Attending Nurse in the Medical ICU at Mass General and I am also a member of the Biothreats Response Team. Throughout the pandemic I’ve also taken on the role of charge nurse and have worked 60 hours a week for more than nine weeks. It was all-hands-on-deck when the surge of patients began. Our unit is extremely patient-and family-centered. Unfortunately, we’ve had to take more of a war zone approach and focus on treating masses of patients. Anxiety is high. The level of sadness has been escalated. Our patients cannot have visitors, so we are the ones holding their hands when they are dying. Working in an ICU can be hard, but working in an ICU during a pandemic has been extremely emotional.

I am a Registered Nurse, working as a travel nurse, around the country. At the start of the pandemic I was working in Flagstaff, Arizona. Working as a travel nurse, many hospitals have had a critical need for staff to help with Covid-19. When the pandemic began I was working in Flagstaff, AZ. I thoroughly enjoyed working closely with the Native American people of Navajo nation, and learning about their beliefs in medicine as well as their cultural practices. Unfortunately, many of our nation’s indeginous people live in close proximity with a large number of family members, and some do not even have access to water or electricity. Therefore, this historic and admirable population suffered greatly from the effects of Covid-19. It was challenging as a nurse to watch patients battle this disease with no improvement, especially in a setting where they could not be surrounded by their loved ones. Also, the hospital procedures on how best to care for these patients were changing daily, depending on the newest evidence based practice. There is still so much unknown. Once my contract was done in Arizona, I came back to New England to work at Mass General as a Covid-19 response nurse. One thing that has remained evident is the way health care professionals came together and supported each other during this stressful time.

Elizabeth (Whittier) Mover ’01

My unit, the 151st Medical Detachment out of Fort Hood, Texas, was mobilized to New York City on March 28th under the 9th Hospital Center. Our job was to set up a field hospital at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. As a dentist on the front lines, I was not doing any dentistry as dental medicine had been put on the back burner during this pandemic all across the country. Instead, I helped set up and conduct training on an electronic health record used on our hospital floor. I also assisted in a research study.

Working as a RN in the COVID ICU at MGH has been nothing short of an emotional and overwhelming experience for me. We see firsthand how this virus affects the young, old, sick and healthy. We are afraid to see our families for fear of exposing them and spend most of our time outside work in isolation. We continue to advocate for our patients and their families as we try to navigate through a no-visitor policy. I am blessed to have the support of my amazing coworkers, family, and friends through this journey. We are all in this fight together.

SUCCESS No Matter WHAT

During the winter months, anyone who wanders the Austin Prep hallways after school knows to keep their eyes open in case a Cougar runner speeds by. Without its own indoor track, the 60 young women on the 2019-2020 team learned to navigate these halls with precision and efficiency.

Fourteen student-athletes qualified for the State Finals, highlighted by Lauren Sablone ’20 capturing the 55-meter dash title, and the 4x100 relay finishing first at the MIAA All State Meet. Through hard work and determination, the team was named the Division 5 State Champions.

named the 2020 MIAA Division 1 Co-State Champs.

The pandemic impacted high school athletics well-beyond the winter season.

It also eliminated the entire Cougar Spring season. While disappointing, the overall boy’s and girl’s teams combined records up until that point were enough for the Boston Globe to again name Austin Prep winner of the coveted Nason Award as the best Division 3 Co-educational Catholic School program in Massachusetts for a third consecutive year.

Director of Athletics and Summer Programming Patrick Driscoll ’97 said he is not surprised by the success. Austin Prep athletes have earned a reputation for skill, focus and fair play. It’s one reason college coaches make sure to include a stop in Reading on their annual recruiting trips.

“All of our coaches have developed relationships with college coaches in their respective sports. Even without the opportunity to play the spring season or take part in summer showcase tournaments and camps, athletes and parents should know we are doing everything possible to create pathways for those student-athletes who aspire to continue their careers at the next level,” Driscoll says.

They were not the only winter team to bring home a title that season.

The girl’s hockey team had some unfinished business from the 2018-2019 season. After dropping the State Final in double overtime the year before, the returning players on the 2019-2020 team put in extra effort to make it back to the Championship Game.

With a thrilling win over Braintree in the semi-finals and a record of 21-1-2, the Cougar skaters earned a return trip to the TD Garden to face Woburn for the title. Unfortunately, Covid-19 forced a cancellation resulting in both teams being

Austin Prep’s quest for a fourth-straight Nason Award began in mid-September, as the student-athletes returned to campus for the first time since the pandemic.

The Girl’s Track and Field Team captured the MIAA Division 5 Indoor State Championship on February 16th.
The 2019-2020 Varsity Girls Hockey team celebrates their 2-1 semi-final win over Braintree on March 12th.

Setting the standard in teaching excellence

For most people retirement simply means the end of working 9-5; hopefully at a job you have done well and enjoyed for years. For others it marks the end of careers that were both valuable to others and personally meaningful.

There are a few for whom those definitions don’t begin to describe the impact of careers committed to the service of others.

The 2019 - 2020 academic year marked the conclusion of careers for five legendary teachers and staff at Austin Prep who personified the values of our school.

Whether helping to solve difficult math problems, coaching Super Bowl teams, providing one on one counseling, guiding students to discover treasures in the library or media center, teaching proper pronunciation in foreign languages (or in one case even recommending tasty French desserts) Mrs. Maureen DiPerna P’08, Mr. Bill “Coach” Maradei P’11, P’12, Mrs. Teresa Wallace P’93, P’96, Mr. Bob Hennessy, and Mr. Gary Mackiewicz collectively spent 171 years at Austin Prep.

Austin Prep is very fortunate to have two of these beloved figures continue their service; on any given day, you will find Coach and Mr. Hennessy substituting or monitoring the library this academic year.

Gratitude doesn’t begin to describe the way our community feels about these mentors, colleagues, and friends.

We look forward to celebrating these remarkable people at an event once the current pandemic restrictions are lifted. Meanwhile, those who would like to honor any or all of these legends are encouraged to support the Austin Scholars Program in their honor.

AT THIS COMPANY, RESILIENCY IS BAKED IN ALUMNI PROFILES

Stephen Boghos ’08

Stephen Boghos ’08 is the Vice President of Business Development at Joseph’s Bakery in Lawrence. His brother Joe is President. Together, they are the third generation of managers in a company their Syrian-born grandfather founded in 1972. They started small, but they didn’t stay that way. Under their leadership and surrounded by an excellent team, the Boghos family has built a local business into an international food industry powerhouse.

Stephen likes to tell a story about one of his grandfather’s earliest milestones. “He used to say: ‘When we get to the point where we need 1,000 pounds of flour a week, that’s when we’ll know we’ve arrived!’”

Today, Joseph’s Bakery requires 700,000 pounds of flour a week – and massive amounts of many other ingredients. They employ 350 people, working three shifts a day to fill orders for 12,000 supermarkets in all 50 states, as well as for retailers here and in 13 other countries.

Stephen is a modest man. It takes a while for him to mention that Joseph’s Bakery is number one worldwide in pita bread and number one in flatbread, too. The company has done a remarkable job of balancing traditional products – their core business – with innovative new baked goods to meet emerging tastes.

“When the low-calorie, low-carb revolution began in the early 2000s, we invented new products based on a combination of flax and oats. They were an instant hit. They made us a national company. We will always be true to our core, but we have a strong Research and Development department, as well. We don’t intend to miss any trends. For example, we produce 40 different flavors of tortilla. When we see an opportunity, we get to work.”

Then in March of this year the pandemic struck and, like managers in almost every other organization in the U.S., Stephen and his brother found themselves confronting questions with few obvious answers.

“Demand began to increase rapidly,” he recalls. “That was a positive. People weren’t going out to eat, they were having their meals at home. At the same time, the supply chain was falling

into turmoil. Unique ingredients that we use in our products started to become scarce. Filling orders completely and delivering on time became more difficult. Customers were calling, and some of them were quite upset.”

To make matters worse, frightened employees were not showing up for work. With no precedent to guide them, no playbook to consult, the Boghos brothers did something almost unbelievable: they shut down the business for two weeks.

“We had to put our people first,” Stephen says. “We closed down, keeping all of our employees home for two weeks receiving full pay, and did everything we could think of to make the premises safe to work in including implementing heavier sanitation policies and procedures, ordering automatic temperature checks, building an extra breakroom to relieve possible congestion and allow for distancing, altering production schedules to allow for staggered shift changes, building more dividers for workstations to help with social distancing, and much more.”

“The decision to shutdown a 24/7 operation was an easy one as this would ensure employee safety as we navigate through COVID-19.”

It worked. After two weeks, Joseph’s Bakery reopened and the employees, reassured, came back. That was a big advantage, certainly, but the brothers still faced enormous production problems, never mind anxious customers struggling to keep their own businesses afloat.

“We hit pause on some of our smaller lines,” Stephen says. “We focused on our core products and thought hard about how we make and deliver them. Up to that point, we thought we had been pretty intelligent in our approach to operations, but, when the pressure was on, we found even smarter ways to do things. It didn’t take us long to improve our flexibility and become more efficient overall.”

When asked about the crisis management lessons he’s learned, Stephen offers a strategy that should sound familiar to anyone in the Austin Prep community.

“You’ve got to be honest with people,” he says. Approach every person, every challenge with an open heart.” In other words: Veritas. “Before the pandemic, I traveled three weeks out of every four. If you want strong customer relationships, you have to do that. It’s so much harder to connect with people online, but these days, it’s necessary. Luckily, I’ve already established strong relationships from here to Central America. It’s helped.”

Lesson two: Unitas. “You’ve got to lean on the people around you. You’re in it together and you can get through it together. We didn’t fully appreciate just how special our team is until we saw them solving problems and making it happen this spring and summer.”

Lesson three: Caritas. “Care about the people you work with and the people you meet in business. That’s the start of success right there. One of the main reasons we’ve been able to pull through this is that we have communicated – over-communicated – with everyone: employees, customers, business partners. We try to see things from their point of view. Everyone is worried about something this year. We can’t always help, but we

let the other person know we care about them. Even when the news is disappointing, people respond to your concern for them.”

Stephen can’t say that Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas occurred to him consciously, but it seems more than coincidental that when the crunch was on, he responded in ways that were rooted in the values he learned at Austin Prep years ago.

The success of Joseph’s Bakery in weathering the pandemic is a virtual case study in the continuing applicability of St. Augustine’s philosophy to the issues, difficulties, and challenges of life in the 21st century.

“If I could do one thing over?” Stephen says. “I would have shut down even earlier. Putting our people first, their well-being, that was the critical step, the beginning of every good thing that has happened since.”

Public Service is Her Canvas

Alexsandra Annello ’02

In life there are careers that seem perfectly logical and almost pre-ordained, as family history, tradition and geographic location play strong influences. Then there are stories that seem to be created along the way.

The story is still evolving for Alexsandra Annello ’02. In just 18 years since her high school graduation she has already traveled far and wide, often navigating her way with lessons learned at Austin Prep.

A journey that began in Malden, Massachusetts is currently unfolding in El Paso, on the border between Texas and Mexico, miles away from the nearest city. It is here Alexsandra currently serves on the City Council, representing the historic 2nd District.

While El Paso has received much negative news in recent political history, in a more positive way it is also the birthplace of the first woman Justice of the Supreme Court, Sandra Day O’Connor, who grew up and attended a Catholic grammar school in the 2nd District.

Alexsandra grew up in a traditional Boston-area Italian Catholic family and considers herself very fortunate to have earned a scholarship to attend Austin Prep starting in the 7th grade. She thrived on the challenging academics and values-driven education she received. “It went beyond the curriculum. We were encouraged to read magazines and watch the news, and discuss current events.”

After traveling to Washington, D.C. with her Austin Prep class, Alexsandra knew this is where she wanted to attend college. This would be her goal for the next four years. Unfortunately, her father passed away at the beginning of her Senior year of high school. Despite being on her own financially, she still pursued her goal and was accepted to the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. with plans to study Political Science.

Thus far it was an ordinary path until she had to end her studies as Alexsandra was financially unable to afford school.

Returning to Boston, she found a job working for a medical journal and living with some friends who were at Emerson College studying film and fine arts. Alexsandra became interested in video and production in her own time and earned a position with the Austin Film Festival in Texas.

That led to an opportunity in Marfa, Texas where she spent several years as a coordinator and publicist at the famous art colony. Involved, independent, and learning what it meant to be self-reliant in this small, remote town, Alexsandra said her Austin Prep education allowed her to work, but she knew that ultimately, she wanted to complete her education.

The University of Texas El Paso, two and a half hours away, accepted her in the Graphics Arts program where she earned her degree in 2017. That was also the year she married her husband, Beto Halpern, an El Paso native and journalist and policy advisor. Becoming engrossed in the community, she decided to run for local office and learned she had been elected the same evening as her wedding.

El Paso City Council celebrates new trolley system.

With a population of over 860,000, El Paso has eight city councilors and a mayor. Alexsandra represents about 100,000 citizens in the 2nd district including the local airport, a U.S. Army base, and the historic section of the city.

Focusing on community activism and civic improvement, she has been welcomed by the citizens and represents a more liberal, Massachusetts-raised Democratic point of view.

As a border town, she said she can see every day the benefits of acting like neighbors instead of strangers. Recently, when undocumented families from neighboring Mexico and Central America were left with nothing, Alexsandra said local businesses and the Catholic Church provided housing, food, and clothing.

At 36 she is now the second oldest of six women reps, instead of being the youngest and only woman – a change for the make-up of this city council. And she is now running for a second three-year term.

Asked if she aspires for larger political office, Alexsandra says that she feels the impact she has in local government and the satisfaction of seeing positive change makes her current job the perfect fit. While she admits the 100 degree plus summer temperatures are difficult, she has come to love the Texas mountains and has learned to see the desert country the same way New Englanders view the ocean.

One gets the feeling that Alexsandra’s story is still being created. “El Paso and Texas have been a place of opportunity and adventure. It was here that I was able to grow and explore a whole new artistic side of myself. I’m excited about opening new doors and creating a better society. I have no idea what the future holds, but I look at it as a blank canvas for change.”

ALUMNI PROFILES

THE TEAM BUILDER

Jim Knowlton ’78

Jim Knowlton ’78 recently opened the new Austin Prep Presents: A Community Webinar Series launched by the Office of Alumni Relations on November 10th.

A few years ago when then U.S. Army Colonel Jim Knowlton ’78 returned to speak with the National Honor Society he said attending Austin Prep was like winning the Golden Ticket in the movie “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.”

“Austin Prep gave me the keys to build my life. Great academics. Great athletics. And great values. I wanted the students to know it’s still there for them, too.”

Building is a consistent theme in Jim’s life. The Burlington, MA native, whose parents were both educators, saw attending Austin Prep as a cornerstone. After captaining the Cougar ice hockey team and knowing he wanted to study engineering, he was excited to earn a place at the United States Military Academy.

He went on to captain the West Point team as a senior, and later served 26 years, first with the 82nd Ranger Airborne and later, after earning a MS in Engineering from Cornell, as a faculty member and acting Athletic Director back at the Academy.

“The challenge of West Point and my Army career was everything I hoped for. It was all about learning how to be a leader and building teams, helping individuals become their best selves.”

After returning from a tour in Iraq and waiting for his next post of commanding a brigade, Colonel Knowlton had the opportunity to switch paths when he was offered the Athletic Director job at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. RPI competes at the NCAA Division III level in most sports, except in ice hockey where they play Division I.

“I was the right fit with my engineering and athletic background. It was a great seven years.”

During his time in Troy, RPI built a new stadium and athletics complex and Jim was named D3 Athletic Director of the Year. That attracted the attention of the United States Air Force Academy who recruited him to be their AD. “Despite my Army background,” laughs Jim.

Three more years of success in Colorado caught the attention of the University of California at Berkeley who were looking for someone to take their 30 teams and 750 varsity athletes competing in the PAC 12 conference from good to great. It was a challenge he couldn’t resist.

Athletes at Cal are given a campus tour that always includes a stop at the science building where there are now 11 parking spots marked with the letter N. “There’s no spot for the AD, only our Nobel Prize winners all have them.”

The combination of athletic and academic excellence, developing character, building teams, and training leaders committed to high achievement, continues despite the challenges of the pandemic and social upheaval.

“We are able to work within our budget and create a positive experience for our athletes.” Jim recently had to cancel Cal’s first home football game of the 2020 season against Washington. “Only one player tested positive, but we had to quarantine all of the defensive linemen. We can’t play a game without them and safety comes first.”

While disappointing, Jim feels it’s a good experience for students to learn how to react and adjust.

The father of five sons who all went on to play college ice hockey from Division I to Division III to club, Jim is also aware of the challenges current high school players and their families face during the pandemic.

His message is positive. “This is a time when there is a great need for communication on all sides. Once you decide what level you feel will be the best fit for you, reach out to the schools. Tell them your grades and test scores and connect them with your coaches. There is a place for anyone who wants to play college sports.”

As a former university faculty member Jim also doesn’t see Athletics as an island. It’s part of the campus community and connected. Perhaps nothing has brought that home more than the ongoing social unrest in our country.

With its tradition of social activism, Berkeley and its athletes and coaches are at the forefront, and Jim supports it completely. “Racism, divisiveness, hatred -must be addressed and tackled. If not, I’m afraid for all of us. If we don’t learn to be civilized, if we don’t learn to treat all on this Earth with respect and welcome them, the next step could be catastrophic.”

Engineer. Army officer. Athletic Director. Jim’s entire career has been about building excellence and leaders. So, it might come as a surprise if you visit the library at Austin Prep to find a remnant of the Berlin Wall after it was torn down.

Jim brought it back from a tour in Germany and presented it to the school. “Some walls are helpful. Some are not. It’s a good reminder for everyone.”

Day of Giving 2020

On May 28, 2020 the Austin Prep Community came together in support of the 2019-2020 Annual Fund. Together, over $273,000 was contributed by families, alumni, faculty and staff, trustees, grandparents and friends. Your generosity had an incredible impact as we faced new unexpected financial burdens due to the pandemic. Gifts to the Annual fund helped to secure the necessary funding to continue to support the training and technological needs of our remote teaching and learning efforts, to ensure that the necessary safety measures were in place to open-up campus, and to provide greater financial assistance to our families in need.

$8,750 $6,750 $21,362 $16,700 $6,715 $273,402

With the 2020-2021 academic year upon us, we maintain our goal of sustaining the education of students. It is a moral obligation we are committed to fulfill. We invite you to continue your support through the 2020-2021 Annual Fund.

Igniting Hearts, Transforming Lives

Our Igniting Hearts, Transforming Lives Campaign is a capital campaign that will fulfill the school’s designated priorities in a phased approach. The focus of our campaign is to improve campus infrastructure, enrich academic programs, increase tuition assistance and scholarships to keep an Austin Prep education accessible, and to expand our energy-saving techniques. Phase I was completed in May 2016.

Phase II is an effort to build an even greater Austin Prep for tomorrow and is vital to the School’s continued growth. We are excited to announce that thanks to the generosity of so many, we have made tremendous progress in Phase II with over $1.7 million raised in support of our $3 million goal. In particular, this phase of the campaign addresses student-centered enhancements to the campus and physical space.

The donor list below represents those who have pledged their support to the Igniting Hearts, Transforming Lives Campaign, to date (October 15, 2020). We are deeply grateful for their generosity and for the support of the greater Austin Prep community during the Igniting Hearts, Transforming Lives Campaign Phase II launch.

Austin Prep Philanthropy Maintains An Upward Trajectory Austin Prep Philanthropy Maintains An Upward Trajectory Austin Prep Philanthropy Maintains An Upward Trajectory

In recent years, the Annual Fund has seen a steady level of increased participation and leadership, and our students are the happy beneficiaries of that support.

Simply stated, your generosity builds the foundation for every student’s success.

With Annual Fund contributions from current parents, trustees, alumni, faculty and staff, grandparents and friends, we enrich the quality of life for our students and their teachers in visible and sometimes unseen ways. All of the hallmarks of Austin Prep – student life, athletics, the arts, technology, teacher professional development, and student assistance – are impacted by Annual Fund contributions, as they sustain our unique and distinctive advantages.

The generous support of our community in the past has had a huge impact on the programs and services we currently offer. Annual Fund dollars are extremely important in providing the additional revenues needed to sustain and introduce exceptional teaching and learning initiatives of all kinds. Given the creative talents of our students and the inspiration of their teachers, our collective efforts will undoubtedly pave the way for a myriad of new innovative instructional activities augmenting the Austin Prep Journey.

The value added from being able to say, “yes” to the needs and wants of students and teachers is a major factor in our ability to remain innovative. The Annual Fund has become the cornerstone for promoting excellence and the key to success in all aspects of our philanthropic efforts.

2019 Parents Association Signature Event Just Gets Better and Better.

The 5th Annual Signature Event took place on Friday, November 1, 2019 and was another wonderful evening in support of Austin Prep. Celebrating our Augustinian values of veritas, unitas and caritas with the theme “All You Need is Truth, Unity...and Love,” the Signature Event hosted approximately 250 parents and raised over $50,000 to support programs and initiatives for students and faculty. This year was particularly exciting to have the winner of the Tuition Raffle in attendance at the event. Congratulations again to the Siano P’23 Family!

We would like to thank all those who made this event such a success, our committee, volunteers, donors, attendees, and most especially our event chair Mannie Gouveia P’23. This event would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of our Austin Prep Community.
