Konkani Amchi Bhas
Konkan Amcho Gaon
Konkani Amchi Bhas, Konkan
Amcho Gaon, Amcha Konkanath
Ami Konknne Javn-asavn are the lines from the song Konkani Machi Bhas written by Konkan Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus. This song came to my mindwhenthedebateforchanging the name of the Dakshina Kannada District is gaining momentum. One group is advocating Mangalore as the name for the district while the other group supports the cause of Tulunad. Both groups have their
own arguments in favour and against the demand. Where is Konkan Amcho Gaon (Konkan our land)?
WhetheritisTulunadorMangalore, noonecandenythefactthatthisis a place where people speaking different dialects namely Tulu, Konkani, Byari and Arebashe besides Kannada have been living together for many centuries promoting their own language and culture.Theydotakepartincultural activitieslike Kambala(Buffalorace) and enjoy Yakshagaana. Konkani is spoken by Catholics, Navayats, Saraswaths and many other Hindu groups like the Kudumbis and Kharvisbelongingtothree different religions over a vast region extending from Cochin to Cambay. The Byari community has played a major role in developing the small
scale and large-scale business (Vyapar=byara) within and outside thecountries.
Mr. Chinnappa Gowda, Professor of Kannada of Mangalore University and an erudite Scholar of Tulu who supports the name Tulunad has a greater vision which he has shared in his article Jilleya Hesarina Badalaavane: Pariganisabekaada Manadandagalu . (Vartha Bharathi dated 21.7.2025) According to him the yardsticks to be considered while changing the name of the Dakshina Kannada District are as follows:
i) Before the bifurcation of the DakshinaKannadaDistrictthename was acceptable for historical reasonsastheKarwarareawasthen known as North Kanara (Uttar Kannada). But after the creation of Udupi District, which was a part of Dakshina Kannada, it is not the correctnameforthedistrict.
ii) TululeaderslikeS.U.Paniyadi,Polali Sheenappa Hegde, Narayana Kille and others gave up their fight for Tulunadu when the fight for the
Unification of Karnataka on a linguisticbasiswasgoingon. While doing so, they had hoped that in due courseoftimeaTuluDistrictor Tulu State would be formed. Therefore, he feels that this is the right time to rename the District as TulunadinsteadofMangalore.
iii) Mangalore is the name of a town andcannotrepresenttheDistrict.
iv) Tulu literature and folklore consists of Epics such as Koti Chennaya and Siri which are world renowned. Moreover, art forms like Yakshagaana, Bhootaradhane and Naagaradhane (worship of Bhootas andNagas)arehighlydevelopedart formsoftheDistrict.
v) If the demand for naming the District as Tulunad is conceded at present, in days to come Tulu speaking areas of Kasaragod in Kerala, Chickmagalur, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Districtscanbebroughttogetherto formabiggerTuludistrict. The supporters of the name Mangalore have their own argumentstoopposethenamingas
Tulunad. But the purpose of this article is not to discuss that controversybuttodrawattentionto an old proposal to form a Konkan Desh.
Suchavisioninfactwasputforthin the Mangalorean . An extract from this newspaper was reproduced in the 1947 (July issue) of Mangalore magazine of the Catholic Association of South Kanara with the comments of the Editor of Mangalorebelow it. The excerpt is asfollows:
KonkanDesh:“Ithasbeenreported tousfromacorrespondentfrom Kanara that some influential and energeticmenfromKonkanDesh are launching a campaign for a separate Konkan Desh extending fromRatnagiritoMangalorewith Goaasthetentativecapital. This province will be Chile of India. KonkanDeshprovinceisveryfertile producing rice, coconuts, ginger, pepper, mangoes and onion. Industrieslikefishing, shipbuilding, cement, tiles, plastic may be developed.”
For centuries the Konkani speaking people have been continuously and systematically exploited by the Maharashtrians, thePortugueseandtheKannadigas. Nowisthetimeforthispoorfolk who inhabit a region stretching from Ratnagiri in the North to MangaloreinthefarSouthtounite and claim the right to selfdetermination. Nor is this all. Bombay belongs to this area geographically, culturally and ethnically.NoCongressleaderhas recognised hitherto the need for KonkanDesh.Wesuggestatleast now all the other claimants withdraw from the contest and admittherightoftheKonkanDesh forthecityofBombay, whichisthe Benjamin of the province. (Mangalorean)
The Konkan Desh proposal considered Goa as the capital at a time when it was under the Portuguese rule. Ram Manohar Lohiahadlaunchedamovementfor the liberation of Goa in 1946. Goa
wasliberatedin1961andbecamea UnionTerritory.Thereaftertherewas an attempt to make it a part of Maharashtra by the Marathi speaking people including the then Chief Minister Mr. Dayanand Bandodkar. The Goan referendum (Opinion Poll) of 1967 solved the question permanently and Goa rejectedtheideaofbecomingapart ofMaharashtra.In1987itbecamea State with Konkani as its State language. This idea and vision of a Konkan Desh was much ahead of its time. However, the author’s courage to dreamitneedstobeappreciated. It was put forth (July 1947) when the country was on the verge of attaining Independence. There was a perceived sense of insecurity as theBritishwereleavingthecountry. The author was clear about the geographical area when he called the Konkan Desh as Chile of India. (Map of Chile in South America is given below) It is a narrow strip on the Western side of South America. Konkan Desh would have looked exactlylikeit-anarrowstriponthe Southwestern coast of India. This vision ignored the interests of the people of other dialects in the proposed Konkan Desh. The author suggested that all the other claimants should withdraw their claim for Bombay to achieve his dream. Even after so many years of linguistic reorganizationof States in 1956, the leaders are apprehensive of Bombay becoming a Union Territory under the Union Government denying the revenue benefitstoMaharashtraState.Good sense prevailed and the idea was not pursued by the leaders in later years.
With linguistic aspirations becoming strong, the need to accommodate different linguistic interests in governance is very important today. The children of Konkanwherevertheygohavebeen mingling with the people of the placeandhavedevelopeditinstead of forming their own ghettos. That cosmopolitan nature has sustained us.
Love for one’s own mother tongue isnotbad.Tuluwhichisspokenand loved by the non-Tulu speaking populationshouldnotoveraperiod become like Hindi which is hated in SouthIndiaduetoitsimpositionon non-Hindi speakers. (District of)
Tulunadu should not be a replica of a Kannada State with similar mandatory requirements like sign boards in Tulu. Sucha development
will invariably lead to divisions on a linguistic basis and polarization in our communally sensitive district. Whatever the name may be, it shouldhelpinthedevelopmentand promotion of all the languages, the culture and the people of this land. It should continue to remain cosmopolitanforitsowngood.
While the Kannada writers and Tulu writers from the district have been expressing their views for and against the proposal, the Konkani writers and Konkani organizations are completely missing from this debate.

In our Life
Miracle is word where all are familiar with and quite astonishing and disturbing. Whilst looking onto to the topic, all of us might have beenheard ofmiracles, somemight have been read in scriptures, some might have head through their friend circles and no doubt that many of us have experienced miracles in our own day today life.
Let us go in deeply what exactly is the meaning of Miracles? Miracle can be described as an event or incident happens without our imagination. It can also be described as things happen against the law of nature or science.
A Miracle is an event which creates faith.
We everyone expect some kind of miracles in our life, and many are eager to share. If some of the examples for our reference (some cametolifebackafterabriefillness, come back to a good situation in business after a heavy loss, a guy who had a stage fear in the childhood and today he is a wellknown preacher……...like this the list flows of miracles of individuals).
It’s not easy to get the miracles happen in our life rather we must have effort, hard work and faith. In
scriptures, we have read the miracles, and they happened only becauseoffaith.Faithandbeliefare the foundation for the miracles to be happened. Life is journey of joy and miseries and surely, we live a betterlifeifwehavebelief, trustand put effort. No miracle required other than having a good life with peace of mind, good health and required finance.
In the current world, things are competitiveandnormallywelookat others and compare with them. Not essential what others doing. Mainly focus on what others are not doing rather what they do. Let us do what others don’t do. Success is hidden there. If we go to a market, we see several shops with the same things and quality and prize as well. So
where to purchase and which shop is suitable to us and whom shall we make our permanent shop. In each shop they insist us to buy their materials which are best. They want to sell their materials and achieve their target of profit whether they are good or not? However, one of the shop keepers is saying please don’tbuyfruitstodayfrommyshop as they are not good in quality and youcanreferothershops.Thisshop should be our permanent shop. How the shop keeper showing his sincerity? He might have lost his profit today, but he gained something much worth which would multiple his loss. In a business, customer benefit is primary, andourprofitissecondary. This principle is a key to miracle in our life. It is a blessing for us from the customer. In the business, profit is should be of both Blessings (Dua) and money. Even though we lose money and achieved Dua, it multiples the lost money. If somebodycomesandaskingforthe thingswhich they don’t need, let us convincethemthatitisnotrequired forthem rather than sellingthem to achieve our profit. He would be our permanent customer. Thus, the
profit only with money, we have only asset in the house and no peace, good relations and sound health. Profit with both blessings and money, brings miracles in our life where we have both money and peace.
We might have heard, some of the doctors saying this patient survived only because of somebody’s dua (Blessings) as we lost all kind of hopes. This is a miracle. Thus, never stop Believing in Hope Because Miracles Happen Every day. “There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle”- Albert Einstein.
Thus, concluding, there is no luck and if something bad happened with us, it’s we, ourselves are responsible. Never ever bring tears in anybody’s eye. If not possible to assist anyone, be quiet and pray for them. But should not hurt anyone. Let usmake profit of blessings from others as much as we can. This only helpsto liveafruitful lifeandbrings miraclesinus.Thereisawordcalled
Nazar (Evil eye) and we use often. I have hit with evil eye (Muje nazar laga hei). No evil eye can hit us and it’s our own evil eyes hits us. I agree that we all are weak and our nature to commit sin and still lagging. However, repentance is a key for this and not reiterating the committed sins. Even though it looks arduous task, but achievable.
Frankly, let us live a good life with blessingsamuchaswecangiveand take and make miracles in our life, family, society, nation and entire universe as life is short and sweet. May God bless us all.

The Recluse
-By: Molly Pinto.
She tries, slipping out her shell, into this conflicting paradigm
To speak as people do, to be what custom rules
To be good and obedient, never stepping out of line
To accept and honour the tribe chosen to be born in
Yet, she doesn't feel she belongs, it's all just noise
Nothing makes sense and the questions never end She longs to block out the sounds and be alone in her shell But it's not allowed, you must follow the dictates
She tries, reluctantly, to integrate into the collective To be helpful and kind, to listen even when no one hear her To everyone and everything, to her own detriment To give until it hurts, forgetting her own worth
Yet again the voices of her teachings fuel her confusion
This must be the death of a soul, when nothing makes sense Is she the only alien amongst her tribe, to not belong
Who am I, she silently screams, as her soul dies

Dr Titus Sequeira’s Medical Miracle1957
Mangalore's premier genealogist, historian, well-known writer and wizard Dr. Michael Lobo, deserving of accolades, recently brought to notice of his 'FORUMGroup of 500' regularly sharing his intelligence greatlyadmired;Averyraremedical achievementofawell-knownfamily scion - Late Dr. Titus Sequeira in Bombay (now Mumbai), in the 1950s. This case was highlighted in the Bombay media and medical circles of those times I have no doubt. Our VEEZ Weekly online readers all over the world will be interested in knowing something about Dr. Titus and his clan and feeling good about the expertise of another great community member. Over the Centuries our Konkani Community and folks of KanarahaveexcelledtoSuperlevels inpracticallyeveryfield, younamea field and you can find people unforgettable in the past and present, our VEEZ Weekly over the last five plus years is packed with such accounts in Konkani and English for the world citizens Kudos
to the Editor/Publisher. Mr. Manuel Seqeira, in Canada, youngest of 8 children of Dr. Titus has reluctantly given Dr. Lobo the skeletalstory, and Dr. Lobo who with hisgenealogyprowess brought the details to fore, the immediate 'Sequeira' clan spread worldwide hasaveryremoterecollectionofthe roots. Some of the information reached me, I cannot see it passing by and the result is yours here. So, let's dive into and investigate what Dr.MichaelLobohasshared:
Tointroducetheachievementthisis whatDrTitus’youngestsonManuel Sequeira from Canada brought out: " Picture 1 here is a picture of our father, Dr. Titus William Sequeira, who on 17 October 1957 made medical history having delivered Siamese twins by simple natural childbirth at his 'Dr T W Sequeira’s Maternity Hospital' Mazagaon Bombay. It was a sensational landmark in the annals of medical history, he having delivered these twins without any physical
equipment, like forceps or by caesarian section or by any other mechanicaldevicetoextricatethese babies from the birth canal of the mother. Just by natural childbirth with the mother alive, and both twins alive as well, at delivery in Bombay. Any delay caused by complications at the time of childbirth would almostdefinitelyhaveendedinone or two or all the three being exposed to the danger of death!
Thanks to the deft hands of my father, all three survived the ordeal. That’s what makes this case so unique. All three miraculously survived. Unheard of in the medical world and perhaps even to this day has never been replicated!
The Siamese twins remained under the care of my father and hospital staff until they were released about six or seven days later into the handsoftheBombayHospitalstaff. I don’t want to get into the nittygritty of what happened there but suffice it to say that emergency surgery was decided upon them, within the next month or two or three, andmyunderstandingisthat onediedontheoperatingtableand the other a few hours later. Tragic! But this is not the truth of my discussion here. My concern is the absence of my father’s historical achievement for the act he performed in the history of delivering Siamese twins by natural childbirth!
Iwasalmost13yearsoldatthetime and I recall very clearly all the excitement and buzz, not to mention the anxiety as well,
surrounding this event around our small maternity hospital in Mazagaon, Bombay (named after my father: Dr T W Sequeira’s Maternity Hospital. and later run by mybrother Dr. Anthony Sequeira in whose time it's renown grew)We are all aware that Siamese twins have been delivered several times over the decades, but it has always been through means of some medical instruments to enable the birthofbabies, butneverbynatural birth.
At the time when this happened in the50s,medicalethicswasfarmore stringent and did not permit the advertisement of a doctor or a doctor’s profession for gain or exposure. My father, being scrupulous about such a protocol, when approached by the Press, declinedtoallowhisnameorthatof his hospital to be published in the newspapers. Medical ethics has changed a lot since. But an insert did appear in two of the three morning papers of the day. I do recall reading them in two of the three dailies. It was a short insert, maybe two or three or four lines, perhaps, appearing in any two of
thesedailies:TheFreePressJournal, or The Indian Express and/or The Times of India. I recall we kept copies of these editions from those two publications, but over time, unfortunately, with the family scattered all over the world, these copies have ended up being discarded or misplaced!
I also recall my father being invited toattendasymposiumarrangedby the local medical organizations in Bombay, to share his experience withthemedicalfraternity.Myelder brother, Dr. Anthony, tells me that there was an insert of this event recorded in one of the publications of the Bombay Medical Journal (he thinks it was in the December issue ofthatyear,1957).Afewyears ago, IdidtrytopickAnthony’sbrainsbut alas, hewasstartingtogetfeeblein mindandfrailinbody.Sonotmuch progress was made. And, to further compound the frustration, residing at this end of the worldMississauga, Canada makes research and communications that much more challenging." Anyway, current readers due the technologiesavailablearefortunate toglimpsethisrarestoryandthetip
of the iceberg of this distinguished familywhosepresenceisverymuch seen the world over, in India and Kanara, albeit blended with numerous growth and progress. Some of you may recognise people here and there andprobablyevenfindconnections very common among our great folk! I am positive, much interest and association could result from the details given by the Sequeira family, its Correspondent and Dr. Micheal Lobo are chief links. Very grateful to VEEZ Weekly on-line publications and Editor for this getting due exposure.
BriefGenealogy history/informationfrom Dr. Micheal Lobo:
A. The first documented members of this Sequeira family are 'Joao Sequeira and his wife Esperança Souza' from the first decade of the 1800s.
B. Our protagonist Dr. Titus Sequeira's parents were Joseph SalvadorSequeira(Shaba)andMary Albuquerque. They were married in Rosario Cathedral on Jan 12, 1892
(Before the present edifice of the Cathedral came up in 1915). Joseph Sequeira did his studies from St. Aloysius College and later from Presidency College Madras. He served at the District Court Mangalore. I was a member of the Municipal set up and a director of the MCC Bank. Mary was the daughter of the well-known Alexis AlbuquerquePai,thefounderofthe Mangalore Tile Factory of Bolar, in 1868andstilloperating.Josephand Maryhad13childrenbetween1893 and1918(Evline,Paul,Alice,Arthur, TITUS, Adele, Martin, William, Magdalen, Rose, Thomas, James and Stanislaus). We see Titus was the 5th of these. Mary died on Sept 21, 1945, and Joseph on July 26, 1958, both buried in Bendore. It is noteworthythat a younger brother ofDr.TitusisFr.WilliamSequeiraSJ, well known as the Head of St Aloysius high school from 1942 to 52 and Director of the Jeppu Workshop for 12 years and contributed special efforts, he lived in Bangalore for long till 1991.
C. Dr. Titus, about whom we hear recall, the main actor, married Ethel Pinto on April 23, 1929. at
Mazagaon Bombay. He graduated from Grant Medical College, Bombay and Practiced in Bombay, operating his "Dr T W Sequeira’s Maternity Hospital”, and was well known to the Mangalore community for his services to the church and poor. It grew in fame in the hands of Dr Titus' son Dr. Anthony Sequeira, a highly popular person in many spheres with the Catholic Community of Mumbai. Picture 2 hereDr.Titus&

THE POWER OF 2X2
#chhotebhai
Most roadways buses have a 2x3 seat configuration; that is, 5 seats in a row. Since that is cramped, luxury buses are 2x2 giving long distance travellers enough leg space.
I am writing this after attending Mass on Sunday 20th July. The first reading (Gen 18:1-10) and the gospel (Lk 10:38-42) both had two principal players each. The first had Abraham and Sarah while the secondhadMarthaandMary.Itwas significant that both the readings were on the same day. This is because several celibate preachers read too much into the Martha-Mary episode while
welcoming Jesus into their home. Jesus reprimands Martha while praisingMaryforhavingchosenthe “better part” (Lk 10:42). This has often been portrayed as the virgin who dedicates herself to God; and being superior to the married woman who is busy about worldly affairs.
Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, pushes this further. “The unmarried womanandthevirgingivehermind to the Lord’s affairs and to being holy in body and spirit; but the married woman gives her mind to the affairs of the world and to how she can please her husband” (I Cor 7:34). Fortunately, Paul begins this exhortation with the rider “About people remaining virgin, I have no directions from the Lord, but I give my own opinion” (v 25). Nevertheless, he ends by saying “Shewouldbehappierifshestayed as she is (unmarried) to my way of thinking – and I believe that I too havetheSpiritoftheGod”(v40).
This distorted idea is based on
Paul’s mistaken notion that the end of the world was imminent. “What I mean my brothers is that the time has become limited” (v 29). Proponents of such eschatological virginity gloss over another statement by Paul that they should stop buying property (v 30). If virginity is an index of eschatologicalimminence, thenwhy dothesesameproponents(Catholic priests and religious) go on buying so much property? Why such a selective reading of Paul’s exhortation? Double standards.
This is why I am reiterating the significance of Abraham and Sarah on the same day as Martha and Mary.Marthawas“reprimanded”by Jesus for being busy in making various preparations for him. “Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me” (Lk 10:40). In sharp contrast Abraham was blessed for going out of his way to serve his divine guests with fresh bread, a fattened calf, curd and milk (Gen 18:6-8). As an immediate consequence Sarah is given the blessing that she will now bear a child (v 10). This too, despite
Sarah’s scepticism and unbelief. “Sarah had ceased to have her monthly periods. So, Sarah laughed to herself, thinking – Now that I am pasttheageofchildbearing, andmy husband is an old man, is pleasure tocomemywayagain?”(v11).
I am belabouring the point to counter the gross misinterpretation of the Martha reprimand. It was specific to the given circumstances, certainly not a general prescription. At that point in time Jesus was prioritising his message over food thatwassecondary.Ithereforehope and pray that preachers will give a decent burial to this virginity versus married life debate. Both are precious in the eyes of the Lord. ThereisanotherincidentatBethany where Martha and Mary resided. It was the death of their brother Lazarus.Herethereisarolereversal. While Mary “remained sitting” (Jn 11:20) it was Martha who wrested the initiative to meet Jesus halfway (ibid). Bethany also sets the record straight for another disciple. Thomas has for long been derided asadoubter(cfJn20:24-25), but at Bethanyitwashewhofirstspokeup
tosay that, despite the danger, “Let us also go to die with him” (v 16). The point therefore is that we should not blow any verse from scripture out of proportion, or out of context.
Now let us see what contemporary church teaching has to say about marriage. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that “Sacred scripturebeginswiththecreationof man and woman in the image and likeness of God and concludes with a vision of the wedding feast of the Lamb” (CCC 1602, cf Gen 1:26-27, Rev19:7-9).Andagain,“TheChurch attaches great importance to Jesus’ presence at the wedding feast of Cana” (CCC 1613, cf Jn 2:1-11), the first miracle.
Echoing these sentiments the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church, the most important document of Vatican II, says, “The family is, so to speak, the domestic church” (LG 11). Even Canon Law has changed. It earlier said that the primary goal of marriage was procreation. It now states that marriage “is ordered to the wellbeing of the spouses and to the
procreation and upbringing of children” (Can 1055:1). So human companionship comes first.
I am a twin, hence conceived in companionship. Over the years I have discovered that be it life or work, I need a companion to rise to my full potential. I have met the President, Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Governors, Cardinals, Nunciosetc, butneveralone.Hence, I am a firm believer in the power of 2X2.
Fromthebeginningof time, wefind thatGodsaid“Itisnotrightthatthe man should be alone. I shall make him a helper (companion)” (Gen 2:18). At the beginning of his public ministry we read “The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him two by two” (Lk 10:1). In the Acts of the Apostles we read, “I want Barnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have called them” (Acts 13:2). Again, “Paul wanted Timothy toaccompanyhim”(Acts16:3).
I cut my teeth in community service 56 years ago through the Legion of Mary. It has a strict rule regarding
house or hospital visitation. Legionaries were always allotted duties in pairs. It is for this reason that I always advocate having two priests in one place rather than one priest each in two places.
When I made my first 30-day Ignatian retreat with Fr Dan Rice SJ in 1980 I was told to meditate for a full day on the Fall of the Angels. It seemed absurd. There was nothing togo by. But I experienced Hell. Itis not a devastating fire; it is
loneliness, being all alone in nothingness. Everything was black, the absence of all colours. Small wonder then that at the beginning of time the Creator said, “It is not good for man to be alone”. God believes in the power of 2X2. So, do I.

Some British historians and pundits defend WSC's and GB’s handling of theBengalfamine, whichresultedin four million famine-related deaths in the six months of 1943. Despite repeated urgent pleas from authorities, London’s initial recommendations for dealing with the crisis were the usual: blame native farmers and grain distributors, impose rationing across the whole subcontinent,
imposefood-pricecontrol,andraise taxes - never losing an opportunity to raise revenues. As we know, the crucial factor in causing the famine was the inefficient distribution of grain rather than its availability. In Bengal’s case, its grain was shipped totheMideasttobuildthestockpile for the troops, and locally stored grain was destroyed lest it fall into Japanese hands. In certain quarters, famines were sometimes viewed as an ally of the colonizers because it increased the supply of army
recruits and indentured labor. No historian can deny that the devastating famine of 1943 occurred because colonial officials reported it repeatedly in memos. Time was of the essence, and if London could not trust the judgmentofitsofficials10,000miles away, then it needed to appoint ones that it could trust. As the saying goes, the buck stops at the executive’sdesk, andtheauthorities or their apologists did not have any brown-skinned person to demonize for the famine.
Various analyses have failed to put the blame where it belonged on the executive branch, whose responsibility it was to ensure that the system was in place to provide the distribution of grain following an unforeseen situation, such as the cyclone of 1943. Those executives included the Viceroy in Delhi, the Governor of Calcutta, and the PM in London. Changing leaders at the height of the famine, sacking thelethargicLord Linlithgow (Viceroy1936-43)andreplacinghim with Field Marshall Archibald Wavell, while needed to be done, wasdoingtoolittletoolatetomake anydifferenceontheground10,000
milesaway.Changingtheviceroyon paper at the height of a tragedy did not immediately address the longstanding mismanagement issue, which needed to be rectified to forestall or address emergencies immediately. For starters, an adequate road and rail system would have helped the speedy distribution of food. For now, the dignified thing for the government, historians, and enablers to do is to acceptresponsibilityforthetragedy and offer an apology for poor management. As writers analyze the situation and review the data, they should study the conditions prevalent in 1943 and examine how well the executive branch had ensured that backup systems were inplace to deal with emergencies in a region known for cyclones and floods. The money would probably have been available for roads and railways had it not been diverted to imperial priorities. Viceroy Linlithgow was the longest ruling viceroy, sonofanearlandcountess, and godchild of Queen Victoria.
Legacy in the Raj: London’s rulers mettheirmatchintheleadersofthe Raj’s freedom movement. Ironically, both sides were trained at the same
London law school, where they learned how to be wary and distrustful, butsavvystatesmenwho valued performance rather than image, glitter, and nepotism links. Despite the colonists’ efforts to divide and rule, the disparate Raj’s leaders stayed united until independence was achieved. In the process, theRajwaspartitionedand left in a bloody mess, with one million killed and 15 million displaced. Butsoon, lefttostandon their own feet and govern, the novices became true statesmen and women, whose power was derived not from physical might but from the ballot box. Ironically, the long years the Indian leaders served in prison gave them the time and opportunity to do some reading, self-reflection, and develop a team spirit through dialogue. Their wellhoned leadership skills enabled them to unify the various parts of the country and strata of society at the center and the states. After the mutinies in the British Indian army (Sepoy Rebellion), navy, and police, WSC and his right-wing peers saw the writing on the wall – they were convinced that the colonies would
no longer be cannon fodder upholding the Empire.
It is likely that WSC lamented that the West had won the war (WW II) but lost the prize (colonies). Nicknamed “The bulldog of Parliament,”WSCwasmoreabullin a China shop. Despite being a Conservative in London, he preferred the Democrats to lead America and was disappointed when Eisenhower was elected President. The odds are that WSC did not appreciate Eisenhower’s rebuke of the growing influence of the Military-Industrial Complex. WSC was more enamored of Democratic presidents FDR and Truman than of Eisenhower. However, subsequent Republican presidents Nixon, Reagan, and Bush(s) and their advisors held WSC in greater esteem than did Democrat presidents Kennedy, Carter, Clinton, Obama, and Biden. Some Republican presidents even displayed a bust of WSC in the Oval Office. Even moreso than inthe UK, the US’s Cold War and Peace through Strength mindset and rhetoric serve to recognize WSC’s
role in shaping the world long after he is gone.
