2016 Altered the face of the Nation

Actions Speak Louder than Words

Story Inside

Gert Sibande Actors Working Around The Clock

It was an election that altered the face of the nation. It was a loud and crazy election which reaffirmed democracy, but it took place in the shadow of death. As many as 20 councillors and campaigners died in this election, a terrifying statistic which deserves some serious attention. Surely democracy should not exact such a price? What this election did was to finally find the missing piece of the democratic puzzle — political competition. It is now clear that South Africans are prepared to “chuck out the bums”, as the Americans say, when they think their elected officials are failing them. The genie is out of the bottle. The old habit of placing the party above all else has begun to melt in the heat of accountability. What comes next will define this country. The ANC has two short years to turn the tide. Will it finally act to remove the man who has defined ruling party arrogance and who does not respect the constitution, Jacob Zuma? Also in the wings is the start of a whole new way of governing at local level as several major cities will be ruled by coalitions. Will the politics of negotiation bring new energy to civic affairs or will it lead, Italian-style, to administrative inertia and further decay? It's a cliche, but it really does “remain to be seen”.

Executive Mayor Bhekabantu Mtshali Celebrates Mandela Month By: Staff Reporter Mayor narrated. He further explained that a similar thing is happening again ateNtombe.

Executive Mayor BhekabantuMtshali Celebrates Mandela MonthWith Elderly People in Mkhondo.

Ward Cllr Masondo could not hide her happiness as she in between of the Executive Mayor's remarks started to demonstrate her talent and skills in traditional dancing. “Ngenxa yomkhuleko nenhlangano kaKhongolose eNtombesinogesi, amanzi, imigwaqo ehambekayo nezindlu.

he old in our society are respected and always a pillar of wisdom, but with 'modernization' things are changing. Some of the parents become destitute after their own children and siblings start seeing their own parents as a burden. When the Executive Mayor BhekabantuMtshalinormally conducts his Mayoral Outreach, he discovers such cases in many corners of Mkhondo. “It is heartbreaking to see that these days the old are being neglected by their ownflesh andblood. Some elderly people are abandoned andleft destitute in dilapidated shelters to become subjected to inhabitable and unsafe conditions”, Executive Mayor Mtshali said when he expressed his concern and sadness in one of his outreach at KwaThandeka near Amsterdam. These situations are creating need for the Municipality to go an extra mile in approaching good Samaritans who are willing to bring social relief to the affected elderly people. The 18 July 2016 brought dignity to two elderly people

The situation the elderly people the Executive Mayor visited regarded it as touchy. Knowing that the Municipality operates within limited resources, he therefore took it upon himself to go an extra mile to lobby financial assistance from individual business people that can be of assistance. The road to changing the lives ofGogoNomvulaMbatha (78) and GogoNyamalele Nkambule (70) to the better began when Executive Mtshali met a Managing Director of Eph's Security who committed to contribute to make a difference to the society. The families of both elderly people depend on pension and social grants. As the time went on, the elderly people eventually

became beneficiaries of the Good Samaritan who heed to the call of the Executive Mayor. The dream of having a proper shelter under their head became a reality during the time when the world was celebrating to mark the 7th Nelson Mandela Day which was his birthday. Members of the community some of whom have been there when the historical event unfolds, couldn't hide their excitement as they broke out in joyful tunes while others ululated. GogoMbatha said shecould not have asked for more – for my family to have a shelter on top of its head after so many years.“Ngisweleamazwiokubo ngakininonkenaku Mayor naloBabaosakhelelendlungem aliyakhe, GogoMbatha concluded”. The journey in celebrating the Mandela Month did not end at Kwathandeka. On arrival at

eNtombe on 19 July 2016, Councillior K.D Masondo of Ward 15, reiterated that she had always a dream to ensure that a 91 year GogoJunia Violet Vilakazi gets her own shelter before her term of office as Ward Councillor ends.

of the Municipality. The elderly people burst into tears when receiving their special gifts. Gogo Vilakazi said; “Ward Cllr Masondo supported me at all times and she continuously visited me to check on my family's wellbeing”.

Indeed, her dream came true when Executive Mayor officially announced that Gogo Vilakazi received her new RDP house. The Executive Mayor later delivered a double bed, electric stove and refrigerator to Gogo Vilakazi. Another 87 year Gogo Christine Nkosi received a new RDP and the same gifts of appliances and bed on that day.

Executive Mayor Mtshalireminded members of the community who also came to share the special occasion with the beneficiaries that the Municipality is a caring government. “We normally do this yearly with the help of local business people who also committed to share what they have with needy people. Not so long, during this same month of an icon Nelson Mandela,

The Executive Mayor was accompanied by his Members of Mayoral Committee, Cllr Vukanimaswazi Nkosi and Cllr NgelosiNdhlovu. Also gracing this historical moment was his wife, Dr. Thobile Ndlovu-Mtshali and Managers

The day which is commemorated annually on July 18, seeks to encourage people to set aside 67 minutes of their time as a gesture of solidarity with humanity and a step towards a global movement for good. What Mandela indicated to us is that it is good we build schools and other infrastructure for social purposes but it's also important that as we do all that, humanity prevails. In pursuant to the two successive events, the Executive Mayor Mtshali then challenged the new ANC Ward Candidates at KwaThandeka and eNtombe to continue doing the same to others and ensure that they demonstrate within their first 100 days in office that the African National Congress is a caring government and will continue to work hard to change the lives of the people better.

Was There Always Someone Under My Bed? I always had a fear of someone under my bed at night ever since I was a child. So, one day I went to a Psychiatrist and told him of my problem. "Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy." I said.

This as South Africans across the country who had previously applied to cast special votes in the 2016 elections began casting their votes through home visits and the opening of some voting stations.

"It ok. I will place you under my care for one year," said the psychiatrist. "Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of your fears.” "How much do you charge?" I asked. "R200 per visit," replied the doctor. "I'll sleep on it and if need be I

will come back to you," I said. Six months later the Psychiatrist met me on the street. "Why didn't you come to see me about the fears you were having?" he asked. "Well, R200 a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money! A barman cured me for R250 only once off. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new Double Cab parked over there." I said pointing. "Is that so!" With a bit of an attitude he said, "and how, may I ask, did a barman cure you?" He asked.

"He told me to cut the legs of the bed off! Now I know no one can go under my bed." Even though this is related as here as a joke, there are a lot of people who have created fears for themselves that have held them back from achieving their dreams! Some have even become their worst enemies as they keep pulling themselves down by believing in unfounded myths that some old ancestor is angry with them and unless they do A, B C and D, nothing will go right! God created you and the earth you live in. With Him, who can stand in the way of your success? Adios!
