Managing Your Credit Score Gwen Bosman

Y

our credit score is an important part of your financial profile. It is what helps banks, finance companies and other credit providers decide if they should lend you money. If you have a low credit score you will be considered high risk and as a result you may not be given a loan or you could be charged a higher interest rate to compensate for the additional risk, explains Direct Axis'

marketing head Marlies Kappers. Credit bureaus calculate credit scores, but this doesn't mean you're not able to do anything about managing your score. Here are some tips that could help you avoid a low credit rating or maintain a good one. Check your credit report: South Africans are entitled to a free credit report each year. You can get one from any of the major credit bureaus. It will tell you your score and more importantly you can check for any mistakes. Make sure there are no late payments listed incorrectly and that the amount owed on each credit account is correct. Pay on time: Your payment record has a significant

influence on your credit score. Even paying a few days late can negatively influence your rating. If you have to make regular payments, consider setting up a debit order so you don't risk forgetting about or missing a payment. Alternatively put a reminder in your diary or calendar. Reduce what you owe: Use the credit report to list all your debts. Arrange these according to the interest rates charged on each. Try to pay off the ones with the highest interest rates first, while maintaining the minimum payments on your other accounts. Pay off debt rather than moving it around: Limit revolving debt such as credit cards. Don't apply for credit cards or open store accounts

to increase your available credit as this could lower your credit scores. Tell creditors if you have a problem: Keeping your creditors informed if you're having difficulties won't rebuild your credit score, but if you can negotiate a payment schedule your score should improve over time. Outstanding debts will stay on your record: If an account is overdue it will negatively affect your score. Making any payments or paying it off completely won't clear your credit record, but will improve your credit score. Be aware though that information about your payment profile can stay on your record for up to five years. Closing an account doesn't make the payment history go away and it may still be

reflected on your credit score. Marlies says the bottom line is to remember that your score is calculated based on information found in your credit report. This comprises your payment history, amounts owed and activity on an account, the age of your accounts - the older the better - judgements and defaults and enquiries about your credit worthiness.

Tips To Staying Cyber Safe

E

very few months, concerns around online scams and theft are raised as a new wave of victims come forward. It seems almost seasonal. But the truth is that cybercrime never goes away. Every day, new victims fall for schemes. There are stories of people losing large amounts of money - even their life’s savings. It can leave one feeling very vulnerable and uncertain. But a little knowledge goes a long way in this fight. Secure your phone It is vital to make your smartphone secure and, in case of theft, useless. The most obvious precaution is to lock the device with a password, swipe gesture or fingerprint reader, says Jacky Fick, head of Cell C’s Forensic Services and an expert in cyber-crime. “We often think our phones can’t contain too much interesting information. But it’s like losing your house keys. Your phone can open a lot of doors for cyber criminals. Once they have their hands on things like phone numbers and home addresses, they can find ways to hijack your financial accounts.” If the phone is stolen, it can be remotely wiped and even disabled. This depends on the type of phone, but can also be done with third-party apps if they are installed.

Re-Program Your Mind For Success (Part Two) In part one, I promised you that in part two I will give you the talk about the GPS system in you and going forward, an exercise to help you reprogram your GPS for success. Because of the many inboxes I received, allow me to address a few issues first. here are some who confuse desires with manifestation. Right now, stop thinking of. Start thinking from. Desire is the gateway to your destination. Imagine how you would feel if your desires were fulfiled. As a human being, you are your imagination. In the words of Emmerson: "A man is what he thinks about all day". Desire is thinking of, while living is thinking from. Do not go through life desiring. Live your desires. When you pray, you orient yourself towards fulfilling your desires. You can also pray for another person as seen in my earlier piece about Abdullah and Vitallie. Prayer is motion. Unless you are doing it wrong, you cannot pray and remain in the same place. So, prayer is motion from a challenge towards a solution. The secret to

T

prayer is persistence. One day you will learn that the greatest prayer is "Thank you father". A man came to ask for three loafs of bread and got the reply that 'we are closed and sleeping now'. If he had not persisted, he was going to go back home empty handed, but he did not desire to have three loafs, he already in his mind had three loafs and had persuaded himself so. Picture yourself having what you desire. Do not ask how or when. If you persist, God Almighty will move circumstances, people and events to manifest your desire. Do not get into the habit of judging and criticising. You have a life. Live it nobly. It's so much easier to be noble, kind and loving than to live a life of envy. If others want to do so, let them. Now that this is out of the way, let's come to the GPS system in you as promised. The GPS is your programable subconscious. It is your internal navigation system. There are three steps to programming your GPS. 1. G - represents goals. As a

Road Trip Snack Hacks Part 1 Awareness nxezu@hotmil.com

1. Skip the chips Yes, they're convenient, but chips will only make for greasy little fingers and car crumbs. And you pay a premium for chips at road-side garage shops. Rather make a big batch of popcorn at home and pack it into smaller bags for each of the kids. It's cheaper, healthier and takes longer to eat so the kids will be entertained for longer. Dry cereal (nothing sugar coated) packed into small plastic packets is also perfect for kids to munch on -

especially if you're travelling in the early hours of the morning. 2. Sip smart Don't let kids sip on fizzy cooldrink during a long road trip. It'll spike their blood sugar - cue the fidgety, irritable behaviour - then leave them whiny when their blood sugar eventually drops. Rather make your own juice (from concentrate) or flavoured water, then freeze in juice bottles to take with you along the way. The ice cold bottles are an added bonus for keeping your other

snacks cool. If the tops of your bottles are big enough, pack straws for your kids to drink through to avoid spillage. 3. Kid-friendly fruit What do you get if you combine three kids, three oranges and a small space? Disaster. You get disaster. Stained clothes, sticky fingers and nagging, guaranteed. Be smart with your fruit choice. Pack fruits that are lowmaintenance, non-drippy and easy to transport. Top picks are apples, bananas and grapes. To be Continued next issue

Prayer Holy Spirit, you renew our wonderment at the love of God, and our joy breaks out in song. Our praise is at the same time an ardent appeal: may the human dignity of all be respected and may all be able to sing your kindness.

SASSA R

Stops Illegal Deductions

SASSA’s Drive To Stop Illegal Deductions From Social Grants

M

pumalanga- South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is on a campaign to stop all illegal deductions and protecting social grant beneficiaries. A trend and scores of complaints has been received from January until to date .Currently SASSA is resolving these deductions through internal reconsideration mechanism (IRM) process. Illegal deductions include loan sharks arrangements, airtime, electricity and funeral policy deductions. The Regulation 26A of the Regulations states that, the SASSA may allow deductions for funeral insurance or scheme to be made directly from a social grant where the beneficiary of the social grant requests such deduction in writing from SASSA. In return SASSA may only authorise one deduction for a funeral insurance scheme not exceeding ten percent (10%) of the value of the beneficiary's grant. SASSA will keep on implementing public awareness and educational campaigns across the province. Every

month beneficiaries are afraid that more money will be deducted. Social grants are there for basic essentials and to put food on the table for the beneficiaries. Affected beneficiaries ended up the social grant being overdrawn by deductions and not affording to contribute towards to basic needs of relief. The emphasis is placed that the majority of financial services they do everything to sell their products. These tempt SASSA beneficiaries. SASSA is urging the beneficiaries to continue reporting any illegal debit deduction and lodge complaints to SASSA offices. SASSA alone cannot stop this illegal act but beneficiaries must work, cooperate and take advises from SASSA by not giving their private information to financial services and report immediately if they suspect someone is misleading or pretends to be a SASSA official.
