ACHIEVEMENT: #SAMA25 In celebration of the milestone 25 years of the SA Music Awards (SAMA), the theme for this year is 25toLife. It's a nostalgic trip into the past which provides a better understanding of the present, in a manner that excites us about the future. For a quarter of a century, the SAMAs have proven to be a mainstay of the local music industry. While music trends come and go, and influences evolve with every passing year, the SAMA remains the one constant element that spurs on the industry to do more and be the best in their endeavours. As the most prestigious and sought after

trophy, the SAMA is a validation chased by every ambitious musician, singer, producer or engineer and anyone in the music food chain. From their humble beginnings at the Alberton Civic Centre, 25 years ago, the SAMAs have evolved into a glittering star studded extravaganza, broadcast live on SABC1 and attracting millions of viewers. In today's world of social media, the SAMAs always sit at the top of the trends and are one of the most hunted invites for musicians, socialites, hustlers, the media and everybody in between. They have been hosted in Johannesburg, Sun City and Durban over the 25 years with Sun City dominating most of the years.

The SAMAs have honoured the achievements of practically all the musicians who have contributed to the music landscape, from the Sophiatown songbirds, Miriam Makeba, Manhattan Brothers, Dolly Rathebe, Dorothy Masuka, to 60s, 70s and 80s legends from a whole spectrum of music genres that spans bubblegum, pop, jazz and alternative. The SAMAs are also the most inclusive with winners in Afrikaans, traditional, maskandi, alternative and contemporary, along with popular genres such as hip hop, dance, kwaito and reggae competing on an equal footing. How to Respond to Misunderstanding 1. Sometimes we will be misunderstood by our close friends. Paul clearly loved the Corinthians and knew them well. And they clearly knew him well. Yet a rift had grown between them. The same thing happens in marriage, in families, among friends and co-workers, and it certainly happens in every church. If you haven't been misunderstood lately, don't worry. It's bound to happen before long. That's part of the price of living in a fallen world. What happened to Paul happens to all of us sooner or later. 2. The best defense is an honest, clear, nondefensive explanation. Remember Joe Friday from the oldDragnet TV series? He was famous for saying, "Just the facts, Ma'am." Paul doesn't complain, doesn't blame, and doesn't point fingers. He isn't long-winded. He lays out his explanation so his readers can decide for themselves why he had not come back to Corinth.

3. We can't control how people respond to us. Rarely will our explanations convince everyone. Sometimes even our close friends will choose not to believe us. At some point we must decide to leave our reputation in God's hands and walk away from the controversy. "If you live to please people, misunderstandings will depress you; but if you live to please God, you can face misunderstandings with faith and courage" (Warren Wiersbe). 4. Pray for those who misunderstand you. In Sunday School recently our teacher exhorted us about reaching out to the "lepers" around us, the people who cause us difficulty or pain, the folks we normally avoid as much as possible. Then he asked, "Who are the lepers in your life?" An uncomfortable silence filled the room. No one wanted to answer that question. Finally a man spoke up and said there were some people he found it difficult to be around. Referring to the call to reach out to the "lepers," he commented, "That's good preaching but hard living." Very true. It's easy to say "Love the people who misunderstand you," it's hard to put it into practice. But we must do it anyway.

Emtek, which is currently developing BBM Consumer under license from BlackBerry Limited, said it will be closing the BBM consumer service on 31 May 2019. “Three years ago, we set out to reinvigorate BBM consumer service, one of the most loved instant messaging applications, as a cross-platform service,” Emtek said.

Loving Our Enemy is Possible, Costly and Rewarding First, remember that loving our enemies requires removing our enmity against God. God's enmity against us was removed at the cross through Christ's death. At that moment He was reconciled to us. Now it is up to us to be reconciled to Him, to respond to Him in love. This is an issue of trust. Without this basis in our lives, it will be impossible to love our enemies. Second, loving our enemies requires an honest, humble selfappraisal. Listen to the words of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: "If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?" Only with this humble attitude can we do the third step: To love a friend requires death to self. To love our enemies requires death to self at the highest level. It is self-denial at warp-speed times 10. This type of love that Jesus requires of us is to be on the side of all people no matter what they might do to provoke a different reaction. For some, this means hanging in there with the rebellious son or daughter who hates you and your Christian faith. For others, it is the arrogant boss who marginalizes you. This tough love requires hanging in there until you can understand why he or she is acting and feeling a particular way. - biblestudytools Continued Next week..../

5. We must not return evil for evil. This is also hard, especially when your motives are repeatedly attacked. But in this we are to be like our Lord who when he was reviled did not return evil for evil. When he faced the shouting crowd, he did not trade insults, he did not try to get even, and he did not make accusations. I submit to you that this is not a natural way to live. When we are insulted, our natural inclination is to return an insult for an insult. But Jesus chose another way. As the old spiritual puts it, "He never said a mumblin' word." "As a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth"(Isaiah 53:7). When he stood before Pilate and Herod, and when he faced the jeering mob, he uttered no insults, he made no threats.

Ditch the Inverter & Use 12 volt Gadgets Edvertorial Load shedding is unavoidable especially if one or two generators breakdown. This is when it becomes absolutely necessary to implement rotational loadshedding. The power utility keeps alerting South Africans of risks of load shedding once there is a shortage of capacity due to the loss of generating units at any of its power stations. The power utility has also received additional megawatts than projected from wind power plants. At a media briefing, Eskom shared its Winter Plan where it indicated that it expects to implement 26 days of Stage 1 load shedding during the winter period, depending on the level of unplanned breakdowns. Eskom has appealed to residents and businesses to use electricity smartly and sparingly. “By rallying together we can contribute to a saving of up to 500MW, which is equivalent of 1 unit at a power station. Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand, it said. With innovation, we can all assist to conserve electricity on the grid through the use of affordable 12 volt gadgets that do not require the use of the traditional inverter. The article below will assist you to understand.

12 Volt Gadgets now in the SA market As load-shedding puts uncertainty in the consumer’s mind, and as solar installation prices remain high, mainly because of a large requirement of solar pannels and batteries coupled with a power consuming inverter that gives you only 5 hours of power, 12 volt appliances like 12v fridge, 12v freezer, 12v kettle, 12v hot plate stove (or gas stove), 12v dry iron with spray, 12v plasma TV (rechargeable), 12v sound systems (rechargeable), 12v hair dryer, 12v hair straightener, 12v led bulbs and motion sensing security lights etc... which avoids the use of an inverter are now available in the SA market. While the traditional inverter requires it's own power to run before it steps up power to run 220v appliances and has limitations depending how many watts the inverter is, 12 volt gadgets take the power directly from the batteries and work for the longest periods. During a power outage, with an inverter, one can have power for up to only 5 hours on a standard system, but on 12 volt gadgets, one can run for the whole night and during the day can still run all appliances with little limitations on a small inexpensive system. Coupled with a gas stove and solar geyser, most house holds can literally go off grid for much less that previously quoted. For more information on these gadgets send a WhatsApp message to 084 334 4627.

#25 to life of SAMAs ...../ Continued from Page 01 Our stage has been graced by some of the greatest talents to emerge from South Africa as hosts such as Trevor Noah, Bonang Matheba, Somizi Mhlongo, Kabelo Mabalane, the late HHP and presenters drawn from television, radio, government and the business sector. The collaboration mashup showstoppers are a trademark element that distinguish the SAMAs from the rest. These performances are eagerly awaited and with high production values, energy and daring effects always send the Superbowl into a frenzy. The red carpet has also evolved as a social highlight which attracts fashion pundits and is a hot topic of discussion among fashionistas, glamazons and those who have a keen interest in all things sartorial. Join us this year as we celebrate 25 years of this original South African story that continues to be written. Nhlanhla Sibisi, RiSA CEO commented: '25 to Life is a celebration of the 25 years of SAMA's existence and the role music played in driving social cohesion. We have lived music since the dawn of time and it has shaped the way we think and feel, and has helped us forge our identity as a nation. 'We look forward to sharing memorable SAMA moments, from their humble beginning and how different genres have evolved in the last 25 years to reflect the country's evolution. There is no doubt that South

Africans live music and appreciate its meaning and impact in their lives, that is why the SAMAs continue to honour the artists through this premium event.' Mme Ontlametse Mochware MEC for the North West Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs (CATA) said her department enjoyed an inseparable affair with the SAMA and Sun City as the meeting place. 'We pride ourselves for the indelible mark and touching the lives of many a musician and the business community of North West Province who keep benefitting economically during the SAMA season. The SAMAs are turning 25, and along it, we celebrate 25 years of democracy as a nation. This year's theme of 25toLife resonates well with the number of years which have brought life to the living through our partnership with the SAMAs. '

This Toilet Vaporizes Poop To Solve Sanitation Problems Designed for places that don’t have indoor plumbing, the change:WATER toilet sucks the water out of waste so it’s more compact, more sanitary, and easier to dispose of. This Toilet Vaporizes Poop To Solve Sanitation Problems As the classic tech lore goes, some of the industry’s best inventions started out in a garage. Diana Yousef’s currently sits in a shed in her backyard in Boston because it could use a bit more privacy. Yousef is the founder and CEO of change:WATER Labs, which has developed a waterless toilet that can basically vaporize your poop. The contraption resembles a traditional toilet that’s set atop a box with a side vent. Inside there’s a collection drum that’s lined with a pouch made from a proprietary moisturewicking polymer. As excrement goes in, the polymer sucks the water out, dehydrating the sewage while releasing water vapor. The process isn’t entirely stinkfree, but the rapid separation of solids and liquids tends to snuff out much of the odor, and there’s an additional filter inside the box. “This would be a way to have essentially like a self-flushing toilet,” says Yousef. The science has spawned its own catchy tagline. “We lovingly call this material ‘shrink wrap for crap,'” she says. Poop, after all, is about 75% water (and pee even more so). By transforming normal bowel movements into tiny dried turds, the device enables multiple uses without immediate maintenance. It’s a potentially breakthrough way to provide better sanitation services to the roughly 2.6 billion people who don’t have access to toilets in the developing world. Typically, rudimentary sanitation service in the developing world takes two forms. There are composting toilets, which require lots of space and are smelly, or personal bucket-based systems and larger pit latrines, the contents of which must be continuously collected and

carted away by health workers. To that end, change:WATER Labs doesn’t consider itself just a toilet company. It’s a “sewage logistics optimization business,” Yousef says. For the average family of five or six, each change:WATER Labs pouch is expected to last at least two weeks before it must be emptied, and the company is working on a larger variation that would double that. That means waste management services have to make fewer pickups, saving time and money. The evaporative toilet is somewhat modular, with interior plumbing that can be easily swapped out while your unit goes in for cleaning. Each pouch is currently disposable and intended to be thrown out once it’s removed, but Yousef is working on how to repurpose or recycle the material to create a closedloop system. For now, replacements, depending on capacity needed, will range from $3 to $15 each. Yousef, who is a structural biologist, founded the company in 2013 after working for various outfits interested in taking lab breakthroughs to market, including McKinsey; the World Bank and United Nations; a clean tech VC firm; and as an advisor to an accelerator that was a partnership between NASA and USAID. Initially, she wanted to form a product accelerator using the practice of frugal innovation to translate emerging technologies into inventions that might benefit developing countries. “I thought initially we’d be this platform where we’d connect the dots between technologies and applications across borders, and we try to solve these problems that nobody was really solving or at least nobody was successfully solving,” she says. Water and coffee going through the change:WATER filter. [Image: change:WATER] The problem was, she didn’t have a proof of concept. So she re-geared, focusing on

breathable materials that could passively evaporate water as a clever water treatment innovation, something she’d studied with NASA and USAID. With her structural biology expertise, Yousef realized that the right material could remove not just the water, but also leave behind dirt, grime, and all of the contaminants to which it’s been exposed. Eventually she created a composite material that brings together a couple of different polymers. (The exact recipe is a secret.) The membrane is triggered to absorb and vent by the difference in humidity between the wet and dry side of the membrane. Yousef thought about applications that aligned with her own values. First, her parents were from the Middle East, so she was aware of the sanitation trouble there. Second, she has two daughters, and wanted her company to somehow address female empowerment. She also became appalled after reading that women at some Syrian refugee camps didn’t feel safe using public toilets. “That became this sort of lightbulb,” she says. “This is the thing that deals with … sustainability and climate change, and girls’ empowerment, so I just went all in.” The company, which incorporated in 2015, has built and tested a prototype toilet. Various grants and awards account for $250,000 in total funding. The project may have started out in Yousef’s kitchen (and then moved outside) but she is now collaborating with MIT’s D-Lab, an organization focused on the discovery, design, and dissemination of cost-effective solutions to fix global poverty. This spring, the company plans to partner with Community Rebuilds, a nonprofit that builds sustainable housing for lowincome and Native American communities in Arizona and Utah, It will be testing between 10 and 20 units at households in Moab, and the Hopi Indian Reservation. The toilets, which may have different capacities based on

where they’re installed (say, a private home versus a public restroom) should retail for between $200 and $350. Yousef also foresees many other applications for her membrane. On the industrial and commercial level, this material could be applied as a wastewater treatment to filter out pharmaceuticals, dyes, or medical waste. There’s also the potential for off-grid desalination projects, which could provide more clean drinking water to those in need. Meanwhile, other international aid organizations have also expressed interest. Earlier this year, Yousef’s concept was announced as a finalist for the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards. In April, she’ll be pitching it to an international jury for the possibility of securing up to $100,000 in additional funding. The company is also the U.S. representative among 27 international finalists vying for a share of the $1 million Chivas Venture, a social impact competition by Chivas Regal, plus an additional $200,000 that will be awarded this month to the fan favorite through online voting (full disclosure: Fast Company was a partner of the Chivas Venture awards in the past). If all goes well, Yousef expects to begin selling models in early 2019. Corrections: This post has been updated to reflect the correct water percentage of poop. Additionally, the Native American communities where the pilot will be located have been updated.
