Boathouse -

Walkthrough Space

The “Walkthrough� of the building is part of the route to get from the ground floor to the second floor workout space. This tunel through teh center of the building provides a vantage point to see what is happening on the two main floors, because its height is split between the two floors it has windows into both areas which creates a great place for onlookers to come and experiance the work of the rowing team, in the boat storage and gym, without disturbing the inhabitants of the space.

Buenos Aires Photography Gallery This research and exhibition space in Buenos Aires has to fulfill many roles including a public gallery, storage for research materials, and housing for researchers. All the spaces and openings of this building were created by a series of intrusions and extrusions from the site’s original volume.

Architectural Folly - Collaboration Our first year studio worked together to design and build a full scale, inhabitable space to enjoy a local farm.

The experience of the space changes depending on the time of day and the weather.

High Rise Library - Collaboration This library occupies a vacant lot between two buildings in Seattle, and is meant to provide a multi-use public learning space for the surrounding community. Due to lighting limitations, the building includes a reflector panel on the roof which takes advantage of the lower sun angle typical in Seattle.

The panel bounces light into the stairwell which is designed to allow natural light to reach all floors.

Apartment Layout Study This four-unit apartment building aims to take full advantage of the allotted footprint by creating flexible space for the inhabitants. There are two floor plans; one for a intimate living plus an entertainment space, and one for more individual private space.

Third Year

Boathouse Project This boathouse at Claytor Lake State Park is the main practice venue for the Virginia Tech rowing and sailing teams. It serves as storage for the university’s boats as well as community space for boat owners in the area. The facility also offers a multi-use event hall and a gym for the rowing team. The design is centered around a pedestrian tunnel through the building that allows visitors to view the team’s activities without disturbing them.

Third Year

PWC EcoPark - Collaboration The EcoPark is an educational center situated in the buffer zone of an active landfill. Our group designed a ribbon element that allowed for a structured grid to dictate the interior as well as provide daylighting and views to the constructed wetland. While education is the main focus of this facility, it also offers an event hall for community use and office space for the landfill staff.

Thesis - Investigating Change In Architecture For my thesis I have been investigating how architecture can evolve and respond to multiple situations. Architecture that moves with its inhabitants and its surroundings engages the occupant and creates a new level of interaction between the two. These unique situations allow the visitors to experience the building through a change of time, whether that be as short as a walk down a hallway or as long as the shifting of the tides. I have been exploring my ideas through the design of an environmental education center on a tidal wetland in Virginia Beach.
