About Me Hello, I am Austin Feldkamp and I am a fourth year grad student at Kansas State University working towards my Masters in Architecture. Ever since I was a kid I loved visiting cities just so I could see the buildings, therefore when I grew older and recognized architecture was a profession, I instantly knew that I wanted to become an architect! To prepare myself for architecture school and the profession, I took hand drafting and CAD classes throughout high school.

After taking Environmental Systems of Architecture I have developed an interest in sustainable designs and hope to integrate my knowledge into my upcoming work.

I have experience in working at an architecture firm as I spent my Summer of 2023 working as an Architectural Intern at Corgan in their Dallas office. During my time there I was able to work on facade designs, attend design meetings, work on drawings for clients and contractors, along with organizing RFI’s and Submittal’s for projects within the Data Center Sector.

Project Description Located in NOHO within New York City, The apartments are located in a prime location of New York.

The idea of the design was to use shipping containers as a sustainable, modular unit for the apartments. There are three different apartments that are made with the use of the shipping containers; a studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom apartment. Each apartment is provided with a private balcony to allow every resident to have their own outdoor space. Within the facade are groups of units where each unit can be plugged into the building along a super floor structure that happens every three levels for the residential floors. This allows for each group of units to have a different configuration that appears throughout the facade of the building as every group is different.

CERAAS Research Center Programs

Third Year First Semester

Project Description Located in Thies, Senegal, this project was to design a research center where scientists can come together to work on drought resistant technologies to help farmers produce crops in the dry climate of Senegal.

When looking at the site I found that the site was located just outside of the city, and on the edge of another suburb of the city, however, there was nothing around the site itself other than the neighboring campus. From the geography of the location I decided to isolate the labs, and have the public space located in the middle making it so the public wouldn’t interfere with the research, however the researchers can talk to the public about their work when on the first floor and basement levels.

Staircase Design

The Maryland State Library for the Blind Programs

Second Year Second Semester

Project Description Located in Baltimore, Maryland, this project was about designing a staircase that would fit within an already existing room. The stairs were to be designed for the blind and physically handicapped.

When designing the stair, I wanted to make a stair that appears like it was floating, while also having it line up with surrounding elements throughout the room such as the bookshelves. Other important aspects that I wanted the stair to accomplish was for the guardrail to be flat every time it turned a different direction, the hand rail to be carved out of the guardrail and be terminated in the guard rail, and to have a continuous line that goes across the entire underside of the stair landing.

Consultant and Cultural Center Programs

Third Year First Semester

Project Description Located in downtown Topeka, Kansas, ECOWAS sits adjacent to the Kansas Capital Building. ECOWAS is to function as a political, economic, and educational space for the 15 ECOWAS members.

The design idea was to have the floors alternate between transparent/heavy masses. The first floor and third floor are transparent floors and have connections to the outside. The second and fourth floor are the heavy masses, however the fourth floor has connections to the outdoors by private residential balconies. Within the building, the stairs follow the linear scheme by running the entire length of the building. The basement contains all the public spaces as there are visual connections to the basement from the first and second floors of the building. The first floor acts as a movement and gathering space, as there are many spaces for people to congregate before going throughout the building. It also has the ramp that allows for the building to embrace the slope of the site, and to be accessible from both the north and south.

Bath House Amangiri Hotel & Resort Drafted

Second Year First Semester

Project Description Located on the property of Amangiri in Utah, this project was a carving project on the cliff face of one the surrounding cliffs of the site.

When designing the bath house, light was a very important aspect. I wanted light to guide people throughout the space and I did that by adding skylights. Since we were carving from the existing cliff, we had to have 2’x2’ columns and structural walls to prevent the ceiling form collapsing. I decided to make a colonnade for the entrance, and where we couldn’t build (first few feet near the cliff edge) I made the columns inverse. For larger spaces such as the pools and spa area, I vaulted the ceiling to allow for it to be a column free space.
