urban break TYPE: MIXED USE RESIDENTIAL LOCATION: MOBILE, ALABAMA SIZE: 105,000 SF TERM: FALL 2017 Mobile, Alabama has suffered an immense loss of density in the past couple decades, making way for paid parking lots. This project aimed to reinvigorate the city’s central downtown and spur new growth. Initially the city was analyzed as a whole to really understand the site. This information and research helped lead towards a downtown district plan created by groups of students addressing issues and needs we observed during our analysis. The resulting design consisted of 80 units and 10,000 SF of retail.

The design works to open itself up to the public as well as break down the massive scale of the project.

Three Dimensional Wall Section

The project construction was greater analyzed in the Spring Semester. Wall sections were detailed in both traditional and three dimensional methods, and floor plans were refined and improved to ensure they met basic accessibility requirements.

sequence TYPE: VISITOR CENTER LOCATION: PLANO, ILLINOIS SIZE: 7,300 SF TERM: SPRING 2016 The Farnsworth House is one of the most well renowned architectural projects in the world.

Built in 1951, by architect Mies van der Rohe, it has become a symbol for modern architecture.

A humble visitor center is located nearby, but it has begun to outgrow the building it is housed in. The second year Alabama Forestry Competition sought a design for a new visitor center to the architectural icon.

A crucial aspect observed while visiting the architectural icon was the emphasis on the experience visitors had in the approach and sequence leading up to the house. The project aimed to maintain this sequencing and further enhance it.

The Farnsworth House itself heavily informed the development and design of the project.

Aspects observed at the site, such as Mies’s ideas of shifting planes, overhanging roofs, and expressed steel columns, were all explored and incorporated into the visitor center design. The primary goal was to pay homage to the original work, but without distracting from it.

The project combines the bridge crossing the creek on the site with the visitor center, drawing inspiration from some of Mies van der Rohe’s work, as well as emphasizing this natural threshold and experience present in the approach to the Farnsworth House today.

TYPE: PUBLIC SPACE LOCATION: ROME, ITALY SIZE: 98,000 SF TERM: FALL 2016 This project provided a chance for us to fully explore an urban environment and respond to it however we felt was best. My project focused away from the buildings on our site, but instead on the site’s high potential for urban connectivity. Within the site’s direct vicinity is the district’s large central park and waterfront, as well as a brand new major convention center. The current situation requires crossing a major roadway to reach the park, and the site offers a visual connection to neither the convention center or the park. This project set out to boldly connect these urban spaces through a space that not only brings connection but also use and intrigue to the area.

The connections found through the longitudinal section was the main drive behind this project.

This massive, sloped public square serves as a hub for the area, enabling direct connectivity where there was none before. It allows access from the train station directly to the EUR Central Park, the new Convention Center, and the elevated public space proposed in the project.

The project can be divided into four primary elements: The ramp/stair system, the auditorium, the spiraling ramp and the loggia courtyard it forms, and the elevated public space.

This exploded isometric shows more clearly the relationship between the various elements.

transparency TYPE: EDUCATIONAL LOCATION: NEW YORK, NEW YORK SIZE: 205,700 SF TERM: SPRING 2018 NYU has had a very turbulent relationship with the city of New York throughout it’s history.

Repeated closed-door deals and land grabs, as well as manipulating development of the washington square park area have led to a certain distrust between New Yorkers and the University. This project aims to reimagine NYU’s student center and performing arts center with a more modern, open approach.

The thought is that using literal clarity in the materiality of the building, that it can then symbolize a new relationship with the city, one that is open and works with the community.

The current building is absolutely removed from the public. This design works to bring in the public from the park and the street, and welcomes them into the main lobby.

A monumental ramp goes down into the most public use for the building, which is a proscenium theatre.

urban studio TYPE: VARIES LOCATION: BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA SIZE: VARIES TERM: FALL 2018 The Auburn Urban Studio is a teaching and outreach program in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. Projects include neighborhood and town master plans, as well as designs for public use buildings in locations with potential for significant urban impact.

During Fall Semester, Fifth Year Students work on a series of week-long design charrettes before participating in internship experiences.

These projects accounted for the first seven weeks of the semester, and ranged from facade redesign, community planning, and urban analysis.

TYPE: ADAPTIVE REUSE LOCATION: PARKSIDE DISTRICT SIZE: 18,200 SF This project required the improvement of an existing warehouse building facade with an unknown commercial program. The design was created to allow multiple types of programs to inhabit the space, while creating visual interest to attract the public from the vibrant Railroad Park and Regions Field area.

TYPE: ADAPTIVE REUSE LOCATION: PARKSIDE DISTRICT SIZE: 22,000 SF An adaptive reuse project focused on an abandoned building near UAB’s Campus.

This project focuses on facade design with a program provided that included a coffee shop and architecture firm on the ground floor, with a research and development lab for UAB on the second and third floors.

TYPE: URBAN PLANNING LOCATION: CAMDEN, ALABAMA A day-long collaborative charrette between urban studio and locals in Camden, AL. Our group focused on improvements to the downtown courthouse, including shading trees, an expanded green space, and planter benches. The goal was to create a destination downtown and a better venue for the town’s annual events.

TYPE: PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATION: EUROPE / UNITED STATES TERM: 2016-2018

In Fall of 2016 I had the fantastic opportunity to study abroad in Rome, Italy for four months at the University of Arkansas Rome Center. I believe the ability to fully immerse ourselves into the culture, architecture, and history of the city has deeply impacted my life both personally and professionally. During the weekends, trips were taken to various other cities such as London, Paris, Florence, and Barcelona. Seeing many of the architectural icons I had learned about through images in architectural history was very impactful.

Additionally, during my undergraduate studies, I have had the opportunity to travel to several cities around the United States through studio site visits, AIAS conferences, and personal trips. Experiencing how various areas of the US have adapted to different challenges and created their urban environment has enriched my studies. Included are samples of photography from many of these experiences.
