Dear Members It’s certainly been a busy time at AustCham Singapore since the last publication of Access Asia. Amongst other things, we were fortunate to have the Prime Minister Scott Morrison present to the Chamber during his recent visit to Singapore.

The Prime Minister spoke about the importance of trade to Australia’s economic success and how integral the strong relationship between Singapore and Australia will be to ensure the principles of openness and free trade are embraced around the region. This is more important than ever given the trade tensions between the USA and China which are impacting many countries who supply China with goods for the ultimate sale of finished products to the US. The trade tensions also provide new opportunities for Singapore and neighbouring countries.

At our AGM on Monday 24th June, 10 members were voted onto the board. We welcome new board members Tim Chapman, Surbana Jurong; Gemma Manning, Gemstar; Liza Noonan, CSIRO; Tristan Perry, Select Investors; and Serena Wee, IconSOC who will bring with them diverse personal and professional experiences and new ideas. Since the AGM we have also co-opted to the board John Simeone, Qantas and Prof Chris Rudd James Cook University.

I am delighted to have been elected President and excited to have the opportunity to lead such an experienced board.

One of the initial priorities will be to ensure the success of the Industry Groups that have started in the last 6 months.

These groups will provide opportunity for greater member participation and development of deeper insight and ideas for the benefit of the Chamber’s entire membership base.

I would like to acknowledge our retiring board members Adam Lyle (President), John Dick (Honorary Secretary), Sean Stratton (Immediate past Honorary Treasurer), Ian Cummin (past President), Benjamin Tan and Fraser Thompson who have made a big contribution to the Chamber’s success. At the AGM, Adam Lyle acknowledged the special contribution that John Dick has made to AustCham Singapore as a board member for over 30 years.

Thanks to our immediate past presidents over the last 12 months, Adam Lyle and Ian Cummin. Adam has been a long standing board member and prior to taking the role as President early this year was very actively involved as Vice President. By comparison Ian’s tenure has been relatively short, but he has led a period of change that I think will ensure that the Chamber is well placed to go forward.

Welcome to the latest edition of Access Asia magazine.

It has been a big few months for the Chamber with lots of changes, events and new initiatives coming on line.

We’ve kicked off our industry groups with three pilot groups focusing on: • Built environment and construction • Cyber and digital • Consumer goods

These groups will be looking at issues and opportunities in their industries as well as creating strong networks within AustCham and other relevant organisations. The Built Environment and construction group has already been providing feedback for the Australian Government around their activities in this space and the cyber and digital group will be doing the same later this month.

These groups are open to all members who are in the relevant industries and while they do require active participation, they also give you a great platform to build your networks and contribute to the industry.

INNOVATION COLLABORATION AT CENTRE OF AUSTRALIA'S RELATIONSHIP WITH SINGAPORE

H.E. BRUCE GOSPER Australia’s High Commissioner to Singapore

A recent visit by Australia’s Minister for Industry Science and Technology, The Hon Karen Andrews MP, reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to collaborate with Singapore in innovation, technology and the digital economy.

The Hon Karen Andrews MP, Minister for Industry Science and Technology, visited Singapore in late June to promote Australia’s science and innovation expertise and tap into economic opportunities in Singapore and the region more broadly. The visit was Minister Andrews’ second in ten months, having joined us for the Australian High Commission’s Good Science = Great Business 2018 Festival in September last year.

During her visit, Minister Andrews joined events as part of Singapore’s Smart Nation Innovations Week, including the Straits Digital Exchange senior leaders’ discussion and a fireside chat at Southeast Asia’s largest innovation festival, Innovfest Unbound.

Titled ‘Innovation Ecosystem – The Aussie Way’, Minister Andrews’ fireside chat at Innovfest covered Australia’s innovation agenda and how innovation and the digital economy are key to Australia building on 27 years of uninterrupted economic growth.

Minister Andrews also discussed the importance of building connections between researchers and industry, Australia’s work to develop a STEM and digital workforce pipeline and increase participation by women and girls in this workforce, and the planned expansion of Australia’s space industry three-fold by 2030.

While at Innovfest Unbound, Minister Andrews’ called on ‘Australia’s Data-Driven Future’ pavilion which featured displays from Australian universities, government, business and partners and aimed to promote Australia’s world-class capabilities and expertise. The Australian National University’s 3Ai Institute showcased its fascinating work on new ways to think about AI.

The University of Melbourne promoted its Australian Integrated Multimodal EcoSystem (AIMES), a world-first test environment for highly integrated transport technology based in the streets of Melbourne. CSIRO’s Data 61 demonstrated its cutting-edge data science and technology in relation to public health and disaster management. James Cook University Singapore showcased its leading research and courses in healthcare and medical technologies. Australian companies BlueChilli Group and SkyCar Global PRT demonstrated healthcare and transport technologies, respectively. The Australian Government ASEAN-Australia Smart Cities Accelerator delivery partner, Accelerating Asia, showcased its programme to help start-ups from ASEAN countries with innovative smart city solutions.

Throughout her visit, Minister Andrews heard about the latest developments in the region, opportunities for Australian businesses. She met with Singapore Government counterparts, including Mr Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman, National Research Foundation, and Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman of the Singapore Food Authority. These discussions covered Australia’s science and innovation approaches, and how best to increase collaboration with Singapore.

An area that is ripe for increased collaboration between Australia and Singapore is the digital economy. Earlier in June 2019 during Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s visit to Singapore, he and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that both countries would explore this collaboration further. A scoping exercise is now underway and expected to conclude in October.

Australia is taking a leading role in shaping international rules and standards – including within the Indo-Pacific – that promote digital trade and build trust in the online environment, such as rules ensuring privacy and other protections for consumers.

In December 2018, the Australian Government released a digital economy strategy – Australia’s Tech Future – which sets out a vision for how businesses, government and the community can work together to maximise the benefits and opportunities afforded by advanced digital technology. The Strategy focuses on the four key areas of people, services, digital assets and the enabling environment, and identifies key government priorities and actions for each. It also shows how digital technology can be applied to provide benefits to different industry sectors, including agriculture, health, education and manufacturing.

The digital economy and digital trade offer significant opportunities for Australia and Singapore. We are working together to deepen digital cooperation in areas that will benefit both our economies. The Australian High Commission in Singapore is planning a Digital Economy Forum in October 2019 to drive this collaboration further and explore new and enhanced partnerships.

AUSTRALIA - SINGAPORE TRADE AND INVESTMENT AUSTRALIAN TRADE AND INVESTMENT COMMISSION SINGAPORE The relationship between Australia and Singapore has been growing from strength to strength. From 2016 to 2017, total trade between the two countries has increased from 9.85 and further increased from 2017 to 2018 to register a 27.3% growth. The main driver of total trade between Singapore and Australia in 2018 is due to the overall trade in goods. There was a 43.7% increase in goods traded from 2017 to 2018. The healthy relationship has further blossomed in the investment side with total foreign direct investment into Australia registering A$28 billion in 2018 highlighting a growth of 7.8% from the previous year.

ROBUST ECONOMY Australia has entered its 28th year of consecutive annual economic growth, setting a new record among developed economies for uninterrupted expansion. This enviable record of steady growth proves the robustness of Australia’s economy and its reliability as a low-risk and safe environment in which to do business. Longstanding ties with Asia have helped Australia to prosper. The nation is a long-term supplier of natural resources to the Asian region and a reliable provider of clean, green and safe agricultural products and premium food. Australia’s trade and investment partners also benefit from the high quality of Australian professional services, which include businesses in the tourism, education, financial and healthcare sectors. The country’s strong regulatory institutions, ability to respond to global changes, and diversified, services-based economy underpin its steady growth.

A LARGE AND GROWING ECONOMY Despite Australia comprising just 0.3 per cent of the world’s population, its economy is expected to be the 14th largest in the world and the fifth largest in the Asian region in 2019. Australia’s nominal GDP is estimated at US$1.5 trillion (almost A$2 trillion) and accounts for 1.7 per cent of the global economy.

In 1999, Australia’s total production value was just US$411 billion, meaning it has more than tripled in two decades.

GLOBAL TIES Australia has an open and globally integrated economy, making it a trusted partner for trade and investment. Nine of the top 10 Fortune Global 500 and eight of the top 10 Forbes Global 2000 companies have operations in Australia. The country continues to play an integral role in Asia’s dynamic economic growth. Ten of Australia’s top 12 export markets are located within the Asian and Oceania region. International companies can tap into Australia’s deep business and cultural ties with Asia to expand into or enter global value chains across the region. Australia’s free trade agreements facilitate the smooth flow of goods, services and investments with major economies across the globe. A top destination for international investment, Australia’s inwards foreign direct investment continues to grow, driven in part by rising contributions from the Asian region. Australia’s location bridges the world’s major time zones, offering 24-hour access for organisations with around-the-clock operations.

AUSTRALIA’S TOP 12 EXPORT MARKETS Australia’s links to Asian markets are more vital than ever. In 2017, 10 of Australia’s top 12 export markets were located in Asia and all were rated above investment-grade. Their combined value was around A$275 billion, making up more than 70 per cent of Australia’s total goods and service

BUSINESS AWARDS 2019 The annual Australian Chamber of Commerce Singapore business awards were presented at a lunch at the Grand Hyatt today featuring fresh Australian produce cooked by a team of internationally acclaimed Australian chefs. The lunch was attended by over 250 leaders of the business community in Singapore.

Adam Lyle, AustCham President, said the awards recognise Australian business excellence, innovation entrepreneurship and the strong connection between Australia and Singapore.

“Awards such as these serve as a timely reminder not only of the strength of Australian business in Singapore but the diversity and the contribution to Singapore society - not just the provision of goods and services,” he said.

“This year we celebrate a range of entrepreneurial and innovative businesses providing early childhood education through to healthcare and marine engineering services reflecting the broad scope of Australian expertise.

“Equally the Awards recognize the ever expanding and substantial commercial relationships between Singapore and Australia.”

Mr Lyle congratulated each of the award winners for 2019:

AUSTCHAM PRESIDENT'S AWARD AustCham President’s Award, awarded to an individual or association who has made a significant contribution to the Australian and Singaporean business community, or to the relationship between Australia and Singapore, or who has substantially facilitated investment or trade between our two countries. 2019 winner: The Hon Andrew Robb AO Prior to politics Andrew had a career in agriculture with roles as an animal health officer and agricultural economist before joining the Cattle Council of Australia as Executive Director and then to the National Farmers Federation as its Executive Director. Andrew stood for Parliament in 2004 and was elected to the Federal Seat of Goldstein. A tireless worker both in Opposition and Government he served a number of portfolios. Following the Coalition victory at the 2013 election, Andrew was appointed to the Cabinet as Minister for Trade and Investment. During his term he negotiated a number of free trade agreements with Asia as well as the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Australia and Singapore. This was the first strategic partnership Singapore signed with another country, taking the relationship between Singapore and Australia to a new level. Since leaving politics in 2016 Andrew has maintained links with Asia, advising a range of national and international companies across the healthcare, food and agribusiness, resources and energy sectors. A board member of the Kidman cattle enterprise, Andrew is also Chair of Asialink and Asialink Business.

In 2003, Andrew was awarded the office of the Order of Australia (AO) for his service to agriculture, politics and the community. Andrew is the author of “BlackDog Daze: Public Life, Private Demons” (Melbourne University Publishing).

COMMONWEALTH BANK OF AUSTRALIA BUSINESS ALLIANCE AWARD Commonwealth Bank of Australia Business Alliance Award, Awarded to the Singaporean company which has demonstrated a significant commitment to Australian trade and investment. 2019 winner: Keppel Corporation.

With a global footprint in more than 20 countries, Keppel is a multi-business company providing solutions for sustainable urbanisation, to meet the growing need for energy, infrastructure, clean environments, high quality homes and offices, and connectivity. The Keppel Group has been invested in Australia since the 1980s, and has current investments of over S$3 billion in Australia in key infrastructure projects and real estate. In addition, Keppel is supplying wasteto-energy (WTE) technology and services to Australia’s first WTE plant in Kwinana, while Keppel Prince is Australia’s largest producer of wind towers and wind farms. Most recently, 8

the Group, through Keppel Infrastructure Trust, completed a A$1 billion deal for the acquisition of the Ixom Group. The Ixom Group is amongst the leading industrial infrastructure businesses in Australia and New Zealand, supplying and distributing water treatment chemicals, as well as industrial and specialty chemicals. The Keppel Group is committed to continue investing and seeking strategic partnerships in Australia and contributing to the country’s development.

GEMS WORLD ACADEMY ENTREPRENEUR AWARD GEMS World Academy Entrepreneur Award, recognising a person/company who has successfully established their own business in Singapore. 2019 winner: David Chiem – MindChamps.

As Founder CEO and Executive Chairman of MindChamps PreSchool Ltd, David Chiem's approach of always 'staying ahead of the curve' has taken the organisation from point zero in 2008 to the number one brand position in the highly-competitive Singapore premium preschool space.

This was followed by a successful listing on the mainboard of the Singapore Exchange in 2017, leading to the creation of a globally-recognised preschool brand. Under David's leadership, the growing influence of MindChamps has also caught the attention of #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best-Selling Author, Joseph A. Michelli, who has studied and written about leading global organisations such as the Mercedes-Benz, Starbucks and Ritz-Carlton. Dr Michelli has described MindChamps as “a calling, a revolution, and a movement” In his latest book, The MindChamps Way – How to Turn an Idea into a Global Movement, Dr Michelli hails MindChamps as "influencing the future of individuals, families, communities, countries, and the education system worldwide."David’s unique perspective on education grew out of his illustrious career in theatre and film. David’s ability to creatively ‘cross boundaries’ is best exemplified by the association he has forged between MindChamps and world famous and Marconi Prize winner, neuroscientist Professor Emeritus Allan Snyder (Fellow of the Royal Society). To quote Prof. Emeritus Snyder, “David Chiem is a man who has crossed many bridges of success to achieve a remarkable synthesis of art, education and entrepreneurship.”From having to flee war-ravaged Vietnam at a young age to not being able to speak a word of English when he first arrived in Australia in 1978, David has gone on to be Founder CEO and Executive Chairman of an SGX mainboard listed company with a presence in Singapore, Australia, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia, David Chiem has certainly shown that he has a real Champion Mindset to overcome adversity.

JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARD James Cook University Business Excellence Award, for the organisation which has demonstrated the most outstanding performance in its field. 2019 winner: Icon SOC. Icon SOC, previously Singapore Oncology Consultants [SOC] became part of Icon Group in 2016. Icon Group is Australia’s largest dedicated provider of cancer care with a growing reach into Asia and New Zealand. Since SOC’s formation in 2006, the company has been led by a prominent cohort of specialists who established private medical oncology in Singapore across four clinics. Since acquisition, Icon SOC has leveraged local Singaporean expertise alongside the Group’s indepth experience in operating a large-scale cancer care network, to expand their footprint and capacity to deliver holistic cancer care. Over the past three years, Icon SOC has seen significant growth having extended from four to seven clinics and introducing haematology and radiation oncology services in 2018. This extension of services has created a comprehensive approach to care, allowing Icon SOC to support more cancer patients through every step of the journey. The continued strength of the business has further attracted a new generation of specialists, going from six to twelve doctors, further securing interest from local oncologists resulting in increased capacity and clinical capabilities, while setting the foundations for future growth locally and across the ASEAN region.

CSIRO INNOVATION AWARD CSIRO Innovation Award, for the individual or organisation that has demonstrated innovation through bringing progressive and new ideas to business in priority sectors. 2019 winner: MMA Offshore - “MMA Pinnacle Walk to Work Project” With International operations based in Singapore and Corporate Head Office in Fremantle, Western Australia, MMA Offshore is one of the largest oil and gas marine service providers in the Asia Pacific region employing close to 1,000 personnel across their operations. MMA employs close to 60 people in its Singapore Office and operates an Onshore Support Facility in Tuas, Singapore.

The “MMA Pinnacle Walk to Work Project” utilised engineering, technical and marine expertise from MMA’s Singapore Office and Tuas Onshore Facility to design and implement a unique marine solution for an Australian client. The solution has paved the way for an innovative, safer and more efficient approach to offshore platform maintenance logistics in the North West Shelf Region of Australia. Prior to this project, helicopters had been the method used to transport maintenance personnel to and from offshore platforms during shutdown operations in this region. MMA developed a unique marine solution to provide a safe crew transfer methodology. The designed solution and technology used represented a first of its kind for platform shutdown maintenance in the North West Shelf region of Australia and in addition to the safety benefits, resulted in significant time and cost saving

AUSTCHAM PRESIDENT'S MEDAL SPEECH 2019 In opposition he stepped back and confronted his depression, the “blackdog” , the condition he had been dealing with for 43 years.

Undertaking Trial and error medication – he said yesterday it was the toughest 6 months of his life. As a true role model he shared his story in his book to enable others to learn from his journey….after taking the time he came back stronger than ever.

Importantly for us upon the election of the Abbot government in 2013 he was appointed the Trade and Investment Minster an historical first for the portfolios to be combined. As coincidence would have it Bruce Gosper was the head of Austrade at the time.

Firstly congratulations to all the award winners what a great bunch of successful businesses.

Now it is my honour to Award the AustCham Presidents Medal 2019.

Today’s recipient has done all that and more.

When taking over the Presidency from Ian Cummin the first thing he reminded me was that I needed to was to nominate a recipient….

Not an easy call as there are many to choose from…. ultimately it’s a captains call ,we discussed a few names and when Ian mentioned todays recipient I went snap , done.

A resident of Sydney, he originally hails from a dairy farm in country Victoria one 9 children true to his roots he started life as an animal health officer , becoming an agricultural l economist dealing with public policy issues laying the groundwork for significant career of a 30 years of public service and diverse business interests. I am of course talking about Tbe Hon Andrew Robb AO. I met Andrew twenty years ago when we both worked for the Packer family me running Ticketek, Andrew running Axciom the leader in database marketing. It was his skills as a direct marketer,understanding people and their motivation that had helped him as Campaign director for Liberal Party for the 1996 deliver John Howard into Government with the biggest liberal party win in history.

In his 3 years he undertook a massive workload negotiating Free Trade Agreements with South Korean Japan China, the TPP and the most importantly for Singapore the CSP. With thre CSP Andrew leaves a massive legacy for all us , Singapore and Australia. Unlike many trade agreement the CSP since 2015 has had and enjoys increasing traction with annual reviews by both countries. Just Last Friday when PM Morrison met with PM Lee Hsien long. the next chapter of the CSP was central to their discussions announcing new collaboration in cyber security, food security and the digital economy. PM Lee also noted that bilateral trade had increased by 25% in 2018. Indeed it is a living document that will serve both our countries enormously well in the years ahead.

Keppel REIT works closely with Australian partners, such as Mirvac Real Estate, GPT Property Management and Charter Hall Real Estate Management, for the management of its Australian property assets.

Keppel DC REIT is another REIT under the Keppel Group. It is the first pure-play data centre REIT listed in Asia on the Singapore Exchange, and also has a significant presence in Australia. THE MINDCHAMPS WAY HOW TO TURN AN IDEA INTO A GLOBAL MOVEMENT JOSEPH MICHELLI, PH.D., CCXP, CSP New York Times #1 Bestselling Author, Certified Customer Experience Professional, Strategic Consultant, Certified Professional Speaker, TEDx Presenter

In this excerpt from #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal BestSelling Author, Dr Joseph A. Michelli’s latest book, The MindChamps Way, Dr Michelli describes the speed by which MindChamps catapulted to international prominence.

In studying MindChamps, Dr Michelli said, “In addition to working with Starbucks, Mercedes-Benz, and The RitzCarlton Hotel Company… While the companies featured in my prior books demonstrate impressive brand power, none of them have been in a position to fundamentally shape society on par with MindChamps.”

FROM AUSTRALIA TO SINGAPORE In 1998, MindChamps began as an educational research centre in Sydney, Australia. At that time, MindChamps’ founder David Chiem and a small group of colleagues began exploring questions about gaps in education. David notes, “We studied educational delivery and saw lots of local and regional approaches attempting to maximise the potential of students. We benchmarked the best approaches, immersed ourselves in outcome data, and tried to understand the shortcomings in efforts to address what clearly was a global need. Four areas stood out to us. The mindset of the learner was often overlooked, a great deal of emphasis was being placed on the content of learning, the delivery system was outdated, and a single discipline solution typically was being attempted when a multi-disciplinary approach was needed.” In response to their observations, David and his team began soliciting the input of experts from a multiplicity of disciplines including education, psychology, neuroscience, and theatre. This input was used to develop a model of learning and possible strategies for building skills relevant to emerging societal needs.

MindChamps started testing their learning tools with primary school age children, but David notes, “We began to see that by primary school, many children had already formed habits and beliefs about their ability to learn. This made it more difficult for them to progress as rapidly as they could have if someone had offered them tools to develop more effective skills and a more constructive learning mindset.” For several years, MindChamps continued to prototype learning concepts in Australia through freestanding programmes.

In 2002, MindChamps began testing its learning solutions in Singapore and established its corporate office there. When asked why MindChamps moved its headquarters to Singapore, David shared, “Since we were seeking to address educational needs globally, we decided to take our approach to a country that reflects a special blend of Eastern and Western cultures; a country that is the gateway to the world. We also knew Singapore had a high achieving education system that also reflected traditional learning approaches and their system emphasised educational content as opposed to learning process. We believed that

MindChamps began sharing the opportunity to bring its learning solutions to like-minded leaders and entrepreneurs even before their first preschool officially opened. To the amazement of many franchise experts, at the same time MindChamps opened its first preschool, the company had signed franchise agreements for 22 preschools in Singapore. These franchise agreements proved to be in high demand due to the reputation MindChamps had earned through its dedication to research and the success of its freestanding enrichment offerings.

if our new model could achieve success in Singapore, it would be a springboard for revolutionising education globally.” MindChamps produced outstanding outcomes from freestanding learning initiatives in Singapore, which paved the way in 2008 for the next phase in MindChamps’ evolution.

THE BIRTH OF THE MINDCHAMPS PRESCHOOL AND FRANCHISE The first decade in MindChamps history (1998-2008) could be described as researching problems and solutions, developing testable and multi-disciplinary educational innovation, and prototyping an effective delivery system across both Australia and Singapore. As David puts it, “When we first began our journey, I believed it would take about a decade to research, build, test, and perfect a solution before we could make it available in a way that could credibly allow us to share our story and tools on a broad scale.” That broad scale sharing occurred in 2008 with the launch of MindChamps’ first preschool in Singapore and the beginning of MindChamps’ franchise model.

The success of the launch was featured on the front cover of Asia Franchise, because of the way that it broke with convention, by selling 22 licences before opening its first school. This is a common theme in the MindChamps story – breaking with conventional ways of operating, to take ‘the path less chosen’.

Today, MindChamps’ growing global presence includes over 80 centres across Singapore, Australia, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia.

Dr Joseph A. Michelli is famous for his books, Mercedes-Benz (Driven to Delight), Starbucks (Leading, the Starbucks Way), and the RitzCarlton Hotel Company (The New Gold Standard), which analyses the strategies and unique qualities of legendary organisations.

David says, “From the beginning, we wanted to create early learning solutions that could scale globally. Plus, I knew preschools must be local. Given our global goal and the local needs of families, I knew we needed to have a scalable solution. As we designed our first preschool, we built it so it could be distributed into local communities throughout the world through a franchise model.

We would keep tight quality controls on the model, but we wanted to partner with others to take the model throughout Singapore and the world.”

AN ICONIC SUCCESS STORY As Icon SOC, now Icon Cancer Centre approaches three years of being part of Icon Group, Australia’s largest dedicated provider of cancer care with a growing reach into Asia and New Zealand, we reflect on its continued growth within Singapore and the surrounding regions.

Since SOC’s formation in 2006, the company has been led by a prominent cohort of specialists who were integral in the introduction of private medical oncology in Singapore. They operated four successful clinics collaboratively, however each essentially ran as separate businesses.

Since acquisition, Icon Cancer Centre has leveraged local Singaporean expertise alongside the Group’s in-depth experience in operating large scale cancer care centres that work as one cohesive organisation, creating a knowledge-sharing ecosystem and a holistic approach to cancer care.

Icon continues to see exponential growth having extended from four to seven clinics and introducing haematology and radiation oncology services in 2018. This month Icon SOC changed over to Icon Cancer Centre to truly reflect the group’s global network and international brand. This extension of services and international alignment has created a comprehensive approach to care, allowing Icon to support more cancer patients through every step of the journey. The continued strength of the business has further attracted a new generation of specialists, going from six to twelve doctors, further securing interest from local oncologists resulting in increased business revenue and clinical capabilities and setting the foundations for future growth locally and across the ASEAN region.

Last month, Mount Alvernia Hospital announced the appointment of Icon to build and manage an integrated cancer centre on their hospital campus. Planning of this $25 million facility has commenced, with services set to open in late 2020. The centre will provide a holistic approach to cancer care by bringing together medical oncology, haematology and radiation oncology.

Through the international network of Icon Group, the Singapore business has been able to leverage global pharmaceutical supply chains, access to clinicians and a robust multidisciplinary healthcare team who are able to remotely support the continued growth of the Singapore business.

Icon’s strong foundations and deep local relationships has made Singapore an ideal regional hub for Icon Group’s continual expansion as they deliver on the Group’s mission of the best care possible, to as many people as possible, as close to home as possible. This model allows patients to access ongoing care close to their home, across borders while travelling to Icon SOC in Singapore for the acute part of their treatment.

INTERVIEW WITH DAVID ROSS, MMA OFFSHORE DAVID ROSS MMA Offshore

MMA Offshore is a marine solutions provider to the Offshore Oil and Gas industry. We own and operate a fleet of over 30 modern, high quality offshore vessels in our key regions of Australia, South East Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

MMA established its international headquarter 2006 in Singapore.

Can you please explain the significance of this strategic decision to MMA? We opened our Singapore Office in 2006 to drive our strategy to grow the business internationally. We selected Singapore as the best location for our international headquarters given its importance as an international marine hub. With the acquisition of Jaya in 2014 our Singapore presence expanded significantly, and we now employ over 60 staff at our Singapore headquarters managing the international aspect of our business.

In June, MMA was announced as the winner of the AustCham Singapore Innovation Award 2019. You applied with a specific project, the “MMA Pinnacle Walk to Work Project”. Can you please describe what about this project was unique/innovative?

In January 2019, we were contracted by an Australian long-term client to assess to potential to use an Accommodation and Walk-toWork Vessel to support shutdown maintenance operations on two of their Australian gas platforms over two work scopes.

MMA designed and implemented a solution which involved fitting one of our Multipurpose Support Vessels, the MMA Pinnacle, with a bespoke motion-compensated gangway & pedestal system which enabled the safe and efficient transfer of maintenance personnel to and from the gas platform and the vessel. MMA’s designed solution and the technology used represented a first of its kind for platform shutdown maintenance in the North West Shelf region of Australia.

Prior to this project, helicopters had been the method used to transport maintenance personnel to and from offshore platforms during shutdown operations in this region, with the associated high safety risk.

MMA’s engineering team had to overcome some unique technical challenges due to the height of the platforms which are up to 30m above sea level as well as the significant wave heights that the vessel was required to work in. The combination of the two factors required comprehensive theoretical modelling of the operation including the workability of the vessel and the equipment in combination.

The unique solution developed by MMA led to a significant process innovation as it reduced overall shutdown time for our client due to the ability to implement two maintenance shifts at the same time. This was a key factor in differentiating this solution from the alternatives.

In order to deliver this solution, our in-house engineering and project team worked closely with Safeway, a specialised gangway manufacturer based in the Netherlands, and our client’s marine department.

How do you envisage MMA moving forward?

MMA has implemented a clear strategy over the past four years whilst facing very challenging industry conditions. We have successfully repositioned the Company through the sale of non-core assets to focus on the higher quality segments and we have strengthened our balance sheet all whilst remaining focused on ensuring we maintain our core competencies of operational excellence, safety and innovation. Interestingly, the downturn has led to some of our most innovative projects as we work with our clients to achieve more sustainable and efficient ways of operating.

Looking to the future, as the offshore industry starts to improve, we are focused once again on growing our business. We will continue to seek new ways to service our clients through focusing on improving efficiency whilst maintaining high quality, safe operations.

IMPACTS OF AUSTRALIAN FIRMS' OVERSEAS BUSINESS ACTIVITIES AustCham supported the release of a new report by James Cook University The Effects of Overseas Business Expansion on Firm Performance: Evidence from Australia. The launch of this research was on Friday 2nd August.

JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY SINGAPORE

James Cook University Singapore launched a report on The Effects of Overseas Business Expansion on Firm Performance: Evidence from Australia. The project was funded by the Pratt foundation Australia.

Project convener Assoc Prof remarked that “international expansion is a tested strategy for Australian firms to enhance its competitiveness and sustainability.”

In recent years, Australian businesses have expanded their operations into Asia and beyond for a variety of reasons, which may include: broader market, cost of production, distribution opportunities, diversification of the business and to manage employment in terms of skills and costs.

Conventional wisdom is to think that when an Australian company moves some operations off shore then it is reducing employment in Australia and increasing employment elsewhere.

In situations where a firm expands operations overseas, it may well be due to its reduced or lost competitiveness in its home market. The reduced or lost competitiveness can lead to employment loss at home if the business significantly scales down or completely closes its operations.

However, consideration needs to be given to the fact that the company could be entering a market of some 7 billion people, which may in fact increase its competitiveness. The growth in Asian markets could have a positive impact on the organisation’s growth and available jobs in Australia. As such, the decision to expand overseas may be instrumental in regaining competitiveness and hence in protecting jobs in Australia.

When an enterprise expand their business overseas, this may result in an increased demand for the firm’s shared services. If such shared services are based within Australia, then additional employment to support shared services will be created at home.

A review of existing research reveals that most studies into the labour impact of Off-Shoring were focused in the Northern American and European context, with only a couple of articles focusing on Australia none of which had an Australian – Asian focus. Secondly, the majority of the studies were focused on organisational performance and impact on profitability due to outsourcing or off shore operations thus showing the second gap for research, namely the impact on employability and employment trends in Australia and the overseas market. The third and final gap lies in the lack of a comprehensive research methodology drawing on qualitative and quantitative research analysis. This project aims to provide an Australian-Asian focus to employment trends in organisations with off-shore operations by using a mixed method approach.

The answer to the question as to whether Australia’s business expansion into Asia and beyond is good or bad for home employment is thus of great

practical significance for businesses and government policy makers. If it can be verified that Australia’s business expansion overseas is likely to have a positive effect on home business outcomes (profitability) and employment (i.e. increasing employment within Australia, or at the least, not imposing negative impact on home employment), then, overseas business expansion can become a useful approach to boost Australia’s future economic wealth and needs to be promoted by governments and employee groups alike.

A group of researchers at James Cook University empirically examine how Australia’s overseas activities may affect home employment and business outcomes in Australia. The study is expected to generate insights into the impacts of international business expansion on jobs in Australia that will have valuable implications for industry development and government policy initiatives.

The report is a joint effort of following James Cook University Academics - Dr Hong-Bo Liu, Dr Rabiul Beg, A/Prof Sizhong Sun, Prof Zhang-Yue Zhou and A/Prof Abhishek Bhati. Mr Jonathan Glickfeld, General Manager, VISY represented The Pratt Foundation and spoke at the event.

THANK YOU BOARD MEMBERS 2018/19

By Adam Lyle, immediate past President As most of you would remember at 2018’s AGM members passed a resolution to limit Board members time on the Board to a maximum of 8 years. This has resulted in a number of us standing down this year - myself included! These departures have made way for the a number of new members to be elected bringing a new set of experiences and skillsets.

As well as these we have had a number of other board members not seeking re-election which will also make way for new Board members to join.

TEENA PISAREV Teena Pisarev , Vice President with me returned to Australia earlier in the year. In her short time on the board she made significant impact by driving AustCham’s healthcare focus as CEO of Icon SOC. AustCham is fortunate to welcome Serena Wee incoming CEO Icon SOC to the Board to continue Teena’s great work.

Sean Straton Sean Stratton retires after having been a board member for the last 8 years, 4 years as treasurer. Sean has been an active board member, committee participant and importantly treasurer – twice – a role he executed fastidiously. A huge supporter of all things AustCham, particularly the Executive Team, Sean was always very generous with praise and quick to acknowledge a job well done.

Not only was Sean was a frequent attendee of AustCham events he claims the title of more selfies with Australian Prime Ministers than other Board member ! Though we don’t expect he will be adding to his collection anytime soon.

Ian Cummin Ian Cummin, President from 2017-2019 stood down earlier in the year in advance of his return to Australia. Ian oversaw many changes during his term including the creation of the Corporate Patron Programme with ANZ and James Cook University as the inaugural patrons, the appointment of Kate Baldock as Executive Director and championed changes to the Constitution. These introduced two year terms for Board members, half board annual elections and the mandatory retirement after 8 years service requirement.

During Kate’s maternity leave staff changes saw Ian step in as “part time” Executive Director so Ian was very hands on. Thanks to Ian’s involvement with the Chamber, and his involvement on the board.

Bluescope has become a very active and valued supporter of AustCham increasing it's commitment to the Chamber as a Gold Corporate member. Ian and his wife Susan’s final move back to Australia will be completed shortly. We wish them well.

Ben Tan Ben Tan resigned from Qantas to become Deputy CEO at Wildlife Reserves Singapore and so did not stand for re-election. Ben continued the Qantas tradition as a strong supporter of the Chamber. Ben’s replacement at Qantas , John Simeone recently landed in Singapore and is already an active member of AustCham, having recently joined the board.

Fraser Thompson Fraser Thompson also did not stand for re-election due to other commitments.

During his time he brought to the Board the proposal for the formation of AustCham ASEAN. Fraser led the design and creation of AustCham ASEAN with the active support of AustCham Singapore. Fraser became AustCham ASEAN’s inaugural President and has worked tirelessly to establish and advance its role in the region for the benefit of all the Chamber members and their members. Given his active role across the region we will not be losing touch with Fraser.

John Dick And finally to John Dick who stood down this year under the eight year rule. John has been a member before there was an AustCham. In those days it was the Singapore Australia Business Council which he joined on arriving in Singapore in 1989 becoming President briefly in 1994 before moving to Vietnam to establish Freehills. While in Vietnam in his spare time he set up AustCham Vietnam subsequently becoming a Life Member.

Returning to Singapore in 2000, he has been on the AustCham Board ever since serving as President 2004-2008. John is AustCham, having designed, built and executed much of what is AustCham today. The drafter, keeper, amender of the Constitution – he has been the Honorary Secretary the entire time of my 10 years on the Board and many years before that. He has been Treasurer, Vice President and of course President –twice. He was made a Life Member in 2008 for services to Chamber.

He was the instigator and driving force behind the establishment of the Community Fund, drafted numerous submissions to the Australian and Singapore government on issues important to our members and led the formation of Australian Business Asia, a forerunner of AustCham ASEAN with Annette Tilbrook and myself.

In addition to his official roles with the Chamber, John has also acted as unpaid in-house lawyer, corporate memory and of course one of his favourites – Devil’s Advocate. I can remember many occasions where John would advance a point of view, debate it thoroughly and then agree to a counter view only to say with that special smile “ I was just playing Devil’s Advocate “ with that special smile.

As my “brother” Phil Forrest (another Chamber Champion) and I agree we rarely disagreed with John’s point of view, but if we did, we also knew he was advocating what in his opinion was best for the Chamber and all members.

John, your presence will be sorely missed by the new board but your contribution and impact will live on. An Australian national, Lucas received his formal culinary training at Slough College in the UK. Lucas moved to Asia in 2002, heading the multi-award-winning restaurant mezza9 at Grand Hyatt Singapore as the Executive Sous Chef. Burnt Ends The modern Australian barbecue restaurant is famous for its open-concept kitchen with custom-made grills and oven fired by coal, apple or almond wood. It is said to be modeled after one that Pynt hand-built for an extended pop-up barbecue event in London. Jason Jones grew up on the south coast of NSW, Australia. He discovered his love of food at an early age living on a farm with an extensive garden and fruit tree orchard. Cooking has been an integral part of his life from the start and from an early age. Jason have worked in many kitchens and opened a number of restaurants across Australia, Europe, Morocco, Mexico and Asia. He opened his first Mexican restaurant "Mamasita" in Melbourne in 2010, followed by a Moroccan restaurant, "B'Stilla" in 2013, both of which won awards for 'Best new restaurants' in Melbourne.

In 2012, Jason made several trips to Singapore to consult the Loco group with their Mexican restaurant, “Lucha Loco”.

Jason moved permanently to Singapore four years ago, and has become a partner with the Loco Group, who have opened two more venues, “Super Loco” Robertson Quay and Customs House. During the last 4 years Jason has been involved in culinary events such as, ‘The Presidents Lunch’ at The Grand Hyatt, Burnt Ends, Laneway Festival, multiple Charity Events, and has been a guest chef at restaurants across Indonesia, Europe and Singapore. The Loco group have recently opened their 4th venue in Singapore on Amoy st – Chico Loco.

The energetic chef’s interests out of the kitchen always bring him back to food and beverages. Australian born Tim Ong is the co-founder of the Victus Group Asia, a collection of food and beverage businesses based in Singapore. NEWS FLASH EXHILARATING SDBF 2019 RACE WEEKEND: AUSTCHAM PADDLE CLUB PAVED THEIR WAY TO THE FINISH LINE SINGAPORE, 20 July 2019: Austcham Paddle Club has emerged the 2019 Champions of the International Business Community and Singapore National Premier Senior Mixed categories at the recent Singapore Dragon Boat Festival held on 13 and 14 July 2019.

Austcham Paddle Club, donning the signature green and gold jersey, paddled head to head with teams across the island to become the Nation’s Best in Singapore’s National Dragon Boat competition. Organized by the Singapore Dragon Boat Association (SDBA), the annual Singapore Dragon Boat Festival gather teams from International Business Community, Tertiary, Public Service, and other SDBA affiliated associations to pit their rowing skills against one another and be the fastest crew to finish the 500m course at the Bedok Reservoir.

Achievements over the 2-day races:

“For months, everyone in the team have committed extra time and effort to attend trainings and gym sessions amidst their busy schedules.” said Andreas Kaestel, President, Austcham Paddle Club.
