Foreword from the Ausdance NSW Chair Rebecca Taylor Ausdance NSW has continued to be the leading voice for the dance sector throughout one of the most challenging years to date. When 2020 commenced, communities across NSW were dealing with one of the most devastating bush fire seasons Australia has ever seen. Out of this crisis and with recovery in sight, the development of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns presented another unprecedented challenge for the dance sector, and indeed the arts as a whole, in NSW. Ausdance NSW worked tirelessly in response to the pandemic, advising, representing and advocating for artists, teachers, practitioners and dance workers across the state.

Key achievements in Ausdance NSW’s work included: Development and endorsement of the COVID Safe Guidelines for Return to Dance and Mask Wearing for Dance Supplement.

Facilitation of over 15 online sector meetings in addition to 200+ individual consultations to provide dance-specific advice, resources and support to the sector.

Work with cross-industry peak bodies and dance sector organisations to successfully secure additional allowances and measures for return to dance while maintaining health and safety standards.

A number of key programs were successfully adapted to ensure their delivery despite the COVID-19 restrictions and impacts. Primary in this was Ausdance NSW’s flagship Dance Artist in Residence Program (DAIR). Negotiating the impacts of COVID-19, ‘DAIR Online’ was rolled out within 10 days of the national lockdown being implemented. The DAIR artists and Ausdance NSW staff re-imagined DAIR as an Instagram takeover concluding with a live co-sharing with the artists online to an audience. DAIR online demonstrated Ausdance NSW’s creativity and flexibility in transforming a live program into digital arts experience, and initiated the organisation’s exploration of ‘Dance in the Digital Realm’.

This exploration of the digital continued with the creation and launch of the short film ‘Making Space – The Dance Artists in Residence of 2020’. The film consists of individual interviews with each of the 2020 DAIR artists, a selection of short performances, and a Q&A with Lee Serle. Congratulations to all artists, staff and supporters involved in this important project.

Emerging from the most significant of the COVID19 lockdowns and impacts, Ausdance NSW has worked to build on the broader sector engagement and membership generated over 2020, establishing a new Dance Studio Leadership Network, designed to strengthen the link between Ausdance NSW and the private studio sector, the primary avenues in which discover and participate in formal dance training across Australia.

Ausdance NSW also continued its commitment to exploring and developing dialogue on key issues impacting the way we identify, discuss and participate in dance. The CALD Dancers’ Working Party was developed this year, bringing 61 Culturally and

Linguistically Diverse (CALD) artists, researchers and workers from across NSW and a further 30 from across Australia, to address racial equity in the dance sector. After this meeting, we continued to hold consultations that were artist-led and addressed different issues faced by dancers of colour in Australia. We will continue these consultations as well as hold our first public webinar on cultural diversity in dance in 2021.

Throughout the year Ausdance NSW worked to secure additional multi-year funding, as it has done successfully for over 30 years. Alongside a number of other peak bodies and service organisations, we were disappointed and distressed that despite a recommendation for funding, it was not awarded. Ausdance NSW has and will continue to work on behalf of its members and the sector, obtaining additional funding via Stage 2 COVID-19 Recovery Funding and working to secure additional support. Ausdance NSW has a long-standing and critical role in representing the dance industry and cultivating development and participation in dance at all levels. The coming year will require a clear and active commitment to building funding stability and focusing activities to ensure service delivery is sustainable.

I would like to thank the Ausdance NSW staff who have gone above and beyond in their commitment and passion to deliver critical services and programs throughout the year, in extremely challenging circumstances. I would also like to thank the Ausdance NSW Board for their support, dedication and sound advice over the period.

As of December 2020, after some 12 years with Ausdance NSW, I have retired from the Board and as Chair. In my long association with Ausdance NSW and the broader Ausdance network, I have seen the impact and power of Ausdance in shaping a national conversation and participation in dance and leading the way. The value of Ausdance NSW has never been more apparent than in 2020 and is critical to the health and survival of the sector.

Foreword from the Ausdance NSW Director Michelle Silby The year that became COVID 19. We stood together, and we will continue together as we look forward to 2021 and post COVID 19, as we start the road to recovery.

COVID 19 hit worldwide, in NSW all workplaces, venues, schools and retail closed down overnight, people lost contracts, jobs and the arts gig economy ceased. We were all forced to lockdown. Some Federal Government packages were put in place. However, a large proportion of dance and the broader arts sector were not able to access Job Keeper or Job Seeker, bringing economic, social and health challenges. With a sector that is already under-funded and often works with high risk and small profit margins and contributes so much to our industry, this was devastating.

During this time we listened, and responded to the sector’s needs, advocating for and with them to the government. We provided free membership at this critical time.

Requests for help went up from 30-50 a week to 70-120 a week. We ran many; facilitated sector meetings, consultations, online professional development, forums, one-to-one support for individuals, organisation’s and companies, dance studies, schools. Pivoted our business model to enable programs to run online.

Advocacy We negotiated appropriate exemptions and wrote the COVID 19 Safe Re-Turn to dance guidelines, for the dance sector to use across the state. Provided Information to the sector from government on the complex and ever-changing restrictions.

Funding The organisations core funding is from Create NSW and during 2020 we applied to multi-year and then annual funding. On both these occasions the dance & physical theatre panel recommended us for funding however when these went to the Arts Minister for sign off we did not receive core funding for 2021, neither did the majority of all other Peak bodies / service organisations. 2020 also saw the Arts Minister commission a review into services and ceasing the separate funding category for service organisations. We are a peak body that also delivers services and classed by Create NSW as a service organization in a previous round. The review into services was aimed to strengthen service organisations and the report was due in April 2020 to feed into grant assessments. However unfortunately it was delivered in February 2021. The Ausdance NSW team and board continues to seek additional funding.

The uncertainty of COVID and not receiving funding for 2021 saw two staff members leave at the end of 2020 to take up new jobs. The organisation then restructured to a smaller staff for 2021.

My huge thanks to the board and the staff, a small team who are all part time who went above and beyond to work with and support our sector, the dance sector.

We all look forward to being, working and dancing together in 2021!

About Ausdance NSW Ausdance NSW is the peak body for, leading dance in NSW. We provide advice, advocacy and dance programs in different contexts and environments. We work both directly, indirectly and in partnership with other state and federal government departments, local government authorities, dance companies, organisations, educational institutions, businesses, and dance studios.

We are part of the Ausdance National Network alongside all other state offices across the country, offering nationwide connections and support to the Australian dance industry.

Strategic Framework Aligning with Create NSW’s triennial funding, 2018 was the third year of Ausdance NSW 2016–2018 strategic plan. This funding expanded to include 2 years of rollover funding for 2019–2020. In addressing our key performance indicators, Ausdance NSW aimed to see dance thrive across the state and provide opportunities and platforms for dance.

Ausdance NSW services the NSW dance community, including members based in Sydney metro, Western Sydney as well as regional and remote NSW through advice, information sharing, sector support, delivery of programs in response to gaps and trends, artist support and, and promotion of dance works.

Board

Rebecca Taylor Chair Joined 2008, Chair May 2017 – December 2020 Rebecca Taylor has extensive experience in the arts, government and tertiary sectors in management, strategy and governance. Rebecca has worked as a professional dancer with the English National Ballet and Connecticut Ballet and as a ballet and contemporary dance teacher in Australia and the USA. She currently holds the position of Head of Strategy & Projects, Performing Arts at the Sydney Opera House, previously holding positions with the Corporate and Engagement & Development areas. In previous years Rebecca has worked with Macquarie University, Australian Bureau of Statistics, The Australian Council for the Arts and Historical Houses Trust of NSW.

Helen O'Moore Vice Chair May 2018 - December 2020 Helen O’Moore is Project Officer for ACFIPS, the NSW Industry Training Advisory Body reporting to State and Federal government agencies on creative industries skills needs, and priorities for funded training. Helen has worked as a regional NSW Arts Development Officer, EO for Ausdance NSW & Arts Training NSW, consultant for NSW DEC project managing e-newsletters and conferences, and as Sydney Opera House RTO Manager/Learning Consultant responsible for the design of organisation-wide training programs responding to business requirements especially in areas of compliance.

Debra Reinecke Board Member Joined August 2018, Acting Chair December 2020 Debra has spent 17-years+ in the performing arts and education, specialising in marketing and development. Her arts career began at English National Ballet in London where she managed partnerships with brands such as HIT Entertainment and BSkyB. Following which she was appointed Director of Marketing and Sponsorship at West Australian Ballet and contributed to a significant period of growth, as the Company increased from 19 to 35 dancers and secured a permanent new home in Maylands; the West Australian Ballet Centre. Debra spent four years as Director of Marketing and Development at Wesley College Perth, then returned to her first love, the arts, in 2018 as Head of Development at Bell Shakespeare.

Kim Walker

Board Member Joined May 2017, Vice Chair December 2020 Kim began dancing with his mother, Margaret Walker AM in his early years while his dancing career began with the Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre (AIDT) in 1978. He joined the Sydney Dance Company in 1980 where he was a principal dancer from 1981 to 1990. Kim was the Artistic Director for the Flying Fruit Fly Circus from 1997-2007. In 2007, he was appointed as the Executive Director/ Head of Dance for NAISDA and is currently Chief Executive Officer of NAISDA, fulfilling another lifelong ambition of being able to help our next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

In 2020 we said farewell to our Chair, Rebecca Taylor and our Vice Chair, Helen O’Moore. We would like to thank both Rebecca and Helen for their support and advocacy throughout their time at Ausdance NSW.

Anna Slowiak Treasurer Joined May 2018 Anna has worked for the Sydney Opera House for the past 4 years and is currently a Senior Business Analyst supporting 4 portfolios. Anna has over 6 years of accounting experience and over 10 years of marketing experience in Arts and Media industries including being the Marketing Manager for Chunky Move. She is a Chartered Accountant with a Bachelor of Commerce from UWA and also has a Graduate Diploma in Screen Business and Producing from AFTRS. Anna has a genuine love of dance and while she has never danced professionally, Ballet and Spanish Dancing played a big part in her childhood.

Sonya Veltman Public Officer Joined May 2018 Sonya works as Special Counsel at Blueprint Law in its theatre and entertainment practice and has extensive experience providing specialised commercial advice to the entertainment industry, including in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. She advises on all aspects of entertainment and live stage show development, production, investing and touring. Sonya first practiced as a solicitor at Baker & Mackenzie. Sonya joined Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Really Useful Group as Corporate Counsel in Australia, where she was broadly responsible for driving the legal and business aspects of the company’s Entertainment projects in the Asia-Pacific region for fifteen years. During this time, Sonya was also Head of the Legal Department at international theatre company Global Creatures.

Michelle Phipps Board Member Joined 2014-2016, December 2020 Michelle has over 20 years of FMCG, Education and Financial Services experience in the areas of HR, marketing and strategy. Michelle holds a PhD in Communications from UTS Sydney and an M.A. HR Management from Charles Sturt University. She has had over 10 years of Board experience and worked across ASX and multinational companies including David Jones, Wesfarmers, Coca-Cola Amatil and QBE Insurance. Michelle also possesses a keen passion for performance, having been a former professional dancer/ singer, performing with Christine Anu and the Bangarra Dance Company for Christine's first Album tour around Australia including WOMAD, and in several professional theatre productions including Miss Saigon, Madame Butterfly, the Australian Tour of HAIR as well as Advanced level in RAD ballet in Melbourne. Michelle is currently General Manager HR at QBE Insurance Australia Pacific.

Michelle Silby, GAICD Executive Director Ausdance NSW and Ausdance VIC Michelle Silby, GAICD has an extensive career in dance in both creative and management roles, she is graduate of the Australian Institute of Directors. Michelle leads Ausdance NSW and Ausdance Vic (since end of 2012 and 2015) through strategy, collaboration, and aims to raise the visibility of dance through large-scale outcomes; as the Director of Big Dance Australia Currently, Michelle sits on the following Industry and government committee’s that oversee all professional accredited training; ACFIBS for NSW, Industry Advisory Group, Business Victorian Skills Commission (VIC), Independent Reference Committee, Arts & Culture related Industries, Vice-Chair (National) Previously Chair, Regional Arts NSW funding 2014-17, Arts NSW funding panels, Churchill Fellowship and Co-convener of the Arts Industry Council Victoria (2017-19).

She has held roles in both the UK and in Australia as; the Program Manager, Dance at the Australia Council working with the board, policy and strategy, dance funding programs, key dance initiatives, such as Tasmanian Community Dance Project and Young Emerging opportunities, for example, JUMP. Executive Producer for the 2014 & 2017 Australian Dance Awards and is also an Independent Consultant for Arts and Dance with various clients across Australia. Producer for IOU projects, performed at Spring Dance at SOH, with artists; Narelle Benjamin, Christina Chan, Anton, Martin del Amo, Craig Bary, Timothy Ohl. As an arts leader, she is strategic, entrepreneurial, and generous with her time and support of others.

Kate Maguire-Rosier Projects & Programs Manager Kate Maguire-Rosier works at the intersection of the arts and higher education. As Projects and Programs Manager at Ausdance NSW, she enjoys working with artists, educators and other stakeholders in the dance sector to support the development of new work, dance artists, dance teachers and the rich dance sector across the state. A dancer at heart, Kate feels strongly about fulfilling an advocacy role for the NSW dance sector and aims to work meaningfully together with individuals and organisations, both fresh and familiar to the community.

She holds a PhD in dance theatre and disability, teaches across Performance Studies and Media Studies at university and is co-convenor of the International Federation for Theatre Research’s ‘Performance and Disability' Working Group. She maintains her research practice largely through collaborations with peer scholars and artists but also through reviewing dance on her blog mrkategoestothetheatre and for The Conversation. To date, one of her most challenging and exhilarating experiences was interning at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival for the 2009 season in Massachusetts USA, where she learnt, among other things, how to fend off a bear!

Susan Doel General Manager February 2020 Susan Doel is passionate about the role of creativity in public life and is committed to democratising access, opportunities and our stages. An experienced producer specialising in cultural development, Susan has an extensive career in the arts mostly in Melbourne where she has been based for the past 19 years. Susan has worked in local government, medium and large performing arts venues and not for profit arts organisations for 10 years and has enjoyed working on festivals, main stage events, public art, urban space renewal and cultural development projects across theatre, dance and music. Prior to this Susan held roles in Education as a teacher and in community and youth development. Susan has a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts (Dance) from Deakin University (2005), Bachelor of Teaching (Dance/Social Science), University of Western Sydney (2006), a Master of Arts and Cultural Management (hons), RMIT (2011) and is currently undertaking a Master of Research – Anthropology at Macquarie University. She is the recipient of an Australia Council for the Arts Structured Mentorship with KAGE Physical Theatre Company and Footscray Community Arts Centre and has received other local awards for her producing and artist development work. In her spare time, Susan is a freelance producer and mother of two.

Lauren Vassallo Marketing Manager Lauren Vassallo is an experienced designer with a demonstrated history of working career in the arts and entertainment industry which spans 15 years with extensive experience in marketing, arts administration, events, education and design. Lauren leads on the design of collateral such as the Annual Report and DAIR Triennial Report. She manages social media platforms and sector engagement. She has a Bachelor of Design (Honours) and Master of Design (Research) from UNSW Art & Design. Her area of research is the relationship between the performer and dress/costume. Lauren has 11 years of teaching experience at UNSW as a Sessional Academic in the design department. She is very passionate about supporting the independent dance sector and in her freelance work, she has collaborated with dance companies including DirtyFeet, Murmuration, in the role of graphic designer and costume designer.

In December 2020 we said farewell to our General Manager, Susan Doel and our Marketing Manager, Lauren Vassallo. We would like to thank Susan for managing the staff team through the pandemic and Lauren for her work with Ausdance NSW as Marketing Manager since 2018 and various contract roles since 2015.

Remi Harvey Administration and Memberships Officer Remi Harvey holds a Bachelor Arts Practice and Management from Macquarie University where she undertook a brief internship with Guy Morrow. Remi performed with the Australian Girls’ Choir for 13 years, before starting her Arts Management career with the organisation in 2013. During her time with the Australian Girls’ Choir Remi sung alongside performers such as Hugh Jackman and Ronan Keating, as well as performing for Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II at Parliament House in 2011. She toured extensively with the choir both nationally and internationally including Times Square for the 2011 international tour, the Australian Embassy in Washington DC, the Sydney Opera House, Allianz Stadium and Carols in the Domain. Her experience both working for and performing with the Australian Girls Choir along with her studies at Macquarie University has given Remi an insight and passion for the arts that she is now extending by working at Ausdance NSW. Remi is also an elite level ice hockey player, representing Australia internationally for 8 years and is a passionate coach training the U18’s Australian and State Teams.

Dancing Nation Throughout the year Michelle Silby regularly meets with state and federal agencies, funding bodies, and key stakeholders such as Create NSW, the Australia Council for the Arts, City of Sydney, and various local government authorities. The director and other members of the team meet with various companies, organisations, individuals, and the broader creative arts community and educational institutions. Michelle shares her knowledge and engages in discussion on the potential opportunities available for the dance sector. The director sits on the following boards and committees to advocate for dance across New South Wales and Victoria, identifying industry needs, professional training, education and funded courses.

The Ausdance National Network Ausdance National Network consists of the different Ausdance organisations in each state. Through the Ausdance National Network, the state’s share strategies, provide interstate sector support and research and advocacy. This also leads to joint initiatives such as the Australian Dance Awards, the National Dance Forum and the Safe Dance Project.

Inter-State Partnership Ausdance NSW and Ausdance Victoria The partnership between Ausdance NSW and Ausdance VIC also builds creative capacity through joint and shared strategies, initiatives, knowledge and events previously such as the Dance Massive. The Creative Aging Forum is produced across both states for the benefit of the sectors in both states. This partnership supports dancers to tour and generate work inter-state. This partnership was further strengthened over the COVID 19 period, where online events and facilitated meetings were held across the 2 states. Due to this partnership, the dance studio network was born out of the joined dance studio facilitated meetings which helped form responses to the lockdown restrictions in each state.

Arts, Communications, Finance Industries and Property Services for Creative Industries (ACFIPS) Industry Training Advisory Board NSW This ACFIPS advisory board looks at the needs of the industry, reviewing current training qualifications, training packages and funding for people undertaking study. The board has worked very closely with TAFE in NSW to create short professional development courses for artists, administrators and leaders. They have been provided at no cost, with a focus on arts administration, business skills, project management, resilience, risk, health, and the wellbeing of the sector.

Independent Reference Committee (IRC), for Arts and Culture Industries, Michelle Silby is Vice Chair This National committee is appointed by the government and overseas all Industry training packages. 2020 saw the review of many qualifications, including the completion of a full major review and update of all dance and musical theatre qualifications. Done in consultation with industry experts from across Australia.

2020 Year In Review The Impact of COVID 19 On the Dance Sector As of June 2020, nearly 300 dance workers responded to the Ausdance COVID impact survey, affecting over 1000 workers with a total income loss of $5.7million.

As the survey was disseminated via Ausdance QLD, data is skewed towards that state and there was a need to better understand how NSW was affected. The broader arts industry and more popular survey “I lost my gig” did not get into enough detail. Whereas our dance-specific survey allowed us to mine data and Vic President of Ausdance National Julie Dyson to take this data to meetings to demonstrate how the dance sector in particular has been impacted.

COVID 19 National Impact Survey An estimated total of $8,063,801 in income in dance lost nationally due to COVID-19 An estimated total of 4,582 dance workers was affected nationally by dance business income loss relating to COVID-19 Only 21% of survey respondents had other sources of income at the time of COVID-19

Ausdance NSW Response Ausdance NSW adapted in direct response to COVID-19. We canceled projects, postponed events, adapted existing programs and even created new ones to cater for the emerging needs of a sector in crisis. We had to cancel our Professional Learning day for Primary School Creative Arts Teachers. We postponed several residencies for dance artists hoping to undertake the development of new work in person later in the year.

Moreover, we adapted our Dance Artist In Residence 2020 program to become #DAIROnline which included the production of digital content and carrying out residences remotely, online and at home. Of note, we convened webinars on particular topics requested by our community including funding prospects in the post-COVID-19 recovery period, access for disabled students and artists in dance and cultural equity in dance.

Perhaps the most important response to the public health and economic crisis was our creation of the Return to Dance Guidelines in collaboration with the Ausdance network and key players in the sector such as Jason Lam, resident GP at The Australian Ballet. It goes without saying, we had an increase in enquiries about restrictions from 40 to 100 weekly and so held regular gatherings for various parts of our sector including independent artists, small to medium organisations and we even implemented a new group of dance studios, owners and teachers leading to the foundation of an Ausdance NSW Dance Studio Advisory Group.

COVID 19 Return to Dance Guidance Notes In order to assist the Dance Sector in returning to dance activities, Ausdance NSW created the Return to Dance Guidance Notes in collaboration with Dr. Jason Lam, the Crichton Dance Medicine Fellow at the Australian Ballet and Orchestra Victoria. Ausdance NSW released 3 documents: Reopening Dance in NSW Guidance Notes, Mask Wearing in Dance Supplement, and the DCIP Risk Review and Checklist for Dance.

The purpose of these documents is to assist in the safe return to dance activity in the state of NSW. By providing

guidance in planning safety measures to be taken by the dance community, the dance sector was able to manage a safe return to artistic, business and community activities.

Dance activities considered when writing these guidance notes include but are not limited to: All dance genres and practices Professional dance training, performance, and competitions and company rehearsals Recreational and pre-professional dance training and performance including dance competitions Classes and training for children and adults Artist-run initiatives and activities These notes aim to assist the dance sector in adapting its practices and operations to ensure compliance with government directives for COVID-19 preparedness and safety.

Artist Recognition Letter for Job Seeker Payments During the COVID 19 period, the government was releasing payment programs and recovery money and many dance artists were not eligible for these due to being short-term contractors or freelance dancers. When Ausdance NSW was made aware of the many dance artists that were "falling through the cracks" of these payment schemes, we started to supply dance artists that were seeking financial support a "letter of recognition". This letter assisted artists in applying for Centrelink and other stimulus measures.

Facilitated Meetings Ausdance NSW’s core work is consulting with dance communities across the state.

These consultations gather qualitative and quantitative data, build relationships and drive an artist-led approach to our public program and policy recommendations.

Independent Dance Organisations In the small-medium NSW arts sector, independent dance organisations play a crucial role. Ausdance NSW facilitates an annual meeting of the NSW Independent Dance Organisations, during the COVID-19 period, these meetings occurred once a week and were on an opt-in basis. The key members of this facilitated meeting include representatives from ReadyMade Works, Dancemakers Collective, FORM Projects Parramatta, Campbelltown Performing Arts Centre, DirtyFeet, Catapult, Critical Path, and Ausdance NSW as well as Ausdance VIC. Key issues emerging from this group include a mix of organisations whose activities range from providing development and research opportunities for dance artists, providing space for workshops, sharings and other communal or public events, to providing performance venues for presentations of work. The first issue was a drop in attendance rates by independent artists at events organised by these organisations located in the Sydney metropolitan area. The second issue was a concern about securing pathways to presentation for independent artists: Since space – in dance making – is central to the development of work at any stage, the capacity for artists with financial restrictions to venue hire constitutes a significant barrier. This comes atop the assumption that artists must undertake unpaid labour for their artistic practice and that venues commit to programming dance, however, is also a vital part of this issue. The third issue is the losses and struggles these small-medium organisations have faced during the COVID 19 period and what is needed to bounce back from this.

Independent Dance Artists After speaking to many independent artists of the challenges they encountered during the lockdown and the COVID-19 period, Ausdance NSW started an Independent Artist Facilitated meeting where dance artists came together to share their experiences during trying times. We then made the decision to invite independent artists to our monthly check ins with Independent Dance Organisations.

Dance Studio Network One of the hardest parts of the crisis in 2020 has been the impact on dance studios across the state, large and small. The inaugural NSW Dance Studio meeting was held during the COVID 19 lockdown when Dance Studios around the state were preparing to reopen. This was born out of weekly dance studio meetings that occurred across NSW and Victoria. In response to these meetings and the ongoing impact for young people and adult participation in dance classes, Ausdance NSW has decided to put together an advisory panel of dance studio owners. The aim of this group will be to strengthen the link between Ausdance NSW and the private dance training industry. The selection process began at the end of 2020 and we look forward to announcing the Dance Studio Advisory Panel in the new year.

Tertiary Dance Network The NSW Tertiary Dance Network meets to discuss the issues within tertiary dance.

These meetings included academics, vocational trainers, freelance professional dance teachers, high school dance teachers and administrators, independent artists and representatives from tertiary education organisations where dance has been or is currently taught including the University of New South Wales, the National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) Dance College, the Australian College of Physical Education (ACPE), Academy of Music and Performing Arts (AMPA), Macquarie University (MQ), the University of Sydney (USYD) and Sydney Dance Company (SDC). Two key issues of concern that are discussed in these meetings include safe dance practice and pathways of and to tertiary dance education and training. Safe Dance is an ongoing concern in the NSW dance sector because there is no central body that endorses safe dance practice in both private dance studio contexts and public high school and university contexts.

The stark absence of an undergraduate course in dance at a public NSW university was also singled out as an ongoing, though more recent concern because it means prospective dance students move interstate after high school or choose another area of study altogether.

Racial Equity in Dance The Racial Equity in Dance Working Party was formed and became a priority in 2020 due to requests from our membership base. We worked with dancers of colour, in partnership with Ausdance Victoria particularly, Shweta Dakin to codesign sessions and safe spaces for culturally diverse dancers as well as planning for a future public forum on cultural diversity in dance.

Founding Members: Annalouise Paul - Independent Artist Yasmin Brock - Contemporary and Ballet Dancer Dr Elena Lambrinos - Dance educator and academic Shyamla Eswaran - performing artist, choreographer and educator Racial Equity in Dance Inaugural Meeting Ausdance NSW facilitated a state-wide consultation with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) dance artists and producers in our first sector consultation addressing racial equity in the dance sector facilitated by Lena Nahlous, Executive Director, Diversity Arts Australia. This meeting exclusively invited CALD dance practitioners and dance workers including producers, arts managers, and other related professionals. In Australia, a place of unceded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land, CALD refers to how we identify, hold, and practice culture on 91 a daily basis in our dance practices and/or as lived experience. This Registrations was open to people who identify as a dance artist with a cultural across Australia practice, a CALD studio owner or teacher, a ballet, an independent or commercial artist from a CALD background, or any other CALD dance professional. The event was a semi-structured discussion over Zoom where the audience was invited to listen and share in a safe space where we unpacked racial and cultural inequity in 61 NSW based dance artists dance, let it be on stage, on screen, or in the studio. In light of this sensitive conversation, this event was intended to be a protected space for those who identify or maybe perceived, as CALD. Cultural Diversity in Dance Lunchtime Sessions As a follow up to the inaugural consultation meeting, Ausdance NSW started facilitating Cultural Diversity in Dance Lunchtime sessions, artist-led conversations by dancers of colour addressing different topics and issues faced by the culturally diverse dance sector. By giving voice to experiences, these sessions hope to make very real issues visible and shine a light on ways to improve our industry for all. These conversations are artist-led by dancers of colour and facilitated in an open-space style discussion, inviting sharing and discourse in a safe space for BIPOC dancers and dance workers.

Dance Artist In Residence Program The Ausdance NSW Dance Artist in Residence (DAIR) program offers space residencies at various host venues across NSW, for members of Ausdance NSW who are independent dance artists, collectives or companies. DAIR is a direct response to the ongoing challenges of access to affordable and appropriate spaces, for the development of dance making and the development of practice in NSW. DAIR activities involve creative development, research, mentorships, rehearsal and the remounting of work.

Supported by The Australia Council For the Arts In 2020 the Dance Artist In Residence program was extended and deepened in its aims, by supporting artists’ development and the legacy and creation of new work. The DAIR program has supported independent dance artists across NSW by matching them with venue partners who provide in-kind use of their space. A new strategic suite of activities included artist stipends, matched paid mentorships, industry networking and capacity building events such as multiple sharings, increased artist management support with Ausdance NSW and a digital documentation of the 2020 program entitled Making Space. Thank you to the Australia Council for the Arts of their support of this program.

The Impact of COVID 19 on DAIR 2020 Within 10 days of COVID-19 sparking a national lockdown, the DAIR 2020 program had shifted online with the enthusiastic support of the artists involved. In the early days of the lockdown, as the shock and panic took its toll, 4 dancers and choreographers quietly took over our Instagram account each day revealing what dance-making looked like in lockdown and how it felt. Culminating in a virtual co-sharing with Alice Weber, Emily and Amy Flannery. The sharing was conducted via zoom and was attended by 25 people.

DAIR online has begun Ausdance NSW’s exploration of ‘Dance in the Digital Realm’.

'Making Space' The Dance Artists In Residence of 2020 'Making Space' is a filmic essay celebrating our 2020 Dance Artists in Residence, produced in collaboration with Bam Studios made possible through funding from the Australia Council of the Arts. Since COVID-19 saw our DAIR residencies shift online, many artists pivoted and were lead to produce digital material during their residencies.

Out of this was born the idea of documenting the 2020 program as a film rather than a written report.

Filmed at Brand X, this filmic essay features all 13 DAIR 2020 artists, sharing excerpts of their work and thoughts about work. They discuss their creative process and reflect on the impact of the DAIR program on their practice as well as touching on the impact of the COVID 19 restrictions on artists (such as limited access to studio space) and how many persevered to produce new work in new formats and in new ways. The film is followed by a digital 'postscript', that is, a group discussion with Ausdance NSW's 2020 DAIR artists and their co0llaborators, facilitated by choreographer and performer Lee Serle.

DAIR Recipient #DAIROnline Natasha Sturgis was scheduled to travel to Art In Motion – Imagine Residency to be hosted and mentored by Karen Kerkhoven in rural NSW however this residency was shifted online due to the COVID 19 lockdown. Natasha developed her work "The Land of Her" remotely at her home. The idea of Natasha's work stems from questioning the traditional roles and behaviours which women and themselves embodying subconsciously.

Alice Weber Alice Weber was scheduled to travel to Alstonville Dance Studio in Byron Bay, due to COVID-19 she completed her residency at home, and was mentored by Giselle Stanborough and collaborated with artists Monika Blaszczak, Vanessa Goodman, Ileana Cheladyn and Alexa Wilson in a series of recorded conversations.

Emily Flannery Emily, with her collaborator and sister Amy Flannery, developed her work 'Bulnuruwahna (Taking Flight)' which explores the Wiradjuri dreaming stories about the way the land was created by birds. Emily was the inaugural recipient of the DAIR at NAISDA First Nations Artists' residency.

However, due to COVID 19, this residency was shifted online and they were able to develop the work on country at their families home. Emily also collaborated with Jye Uren and Thomas J Kelly.

Rakini Devi Rakini Devi was able to complete part of her residency (due to COVID 19 restrictions) at the Australian College of Physical Education, with collaborators Jiva Partihpan, Nigel Kellaway, Kenny Feather and mentor Martin Del Amo. Rakini developed her creative project 'I USED TO BE A DANCER'. We look forward to Rakini completing her DAIR residency in 2021.

Ryuichi Fujimura undertook a 1-week residency at ReadyMade Works to collaborate with video artist, Laura Turner while being mentored by Kate Champion. Ryuichi's residency was rescheduled for later in 2020 due to the COVID 19 lockdown.

Annalouise Paul completed her 1-week residency at Campbelltown Arts Centre. Annalouise received her first international commission from George Town Festival in 2020 for a new dance work at the Penang Peranakan Mansion. She used the residency to experiment with new hybrid scores that can be employed by the local dance artists (Malaysia, Singapore) to generate embodied material from their own cultural and contemporary practices. Ella Watson-Heath Ella Watson-Heath completed her 1-week residency at the Australian College of Physical Education, in collaboration with Kieran Clancy-Lowe and mentored by Sandra Eldridge. During her project 'Save the Endorphin' Ella aimed to develop a program for year 7 to year nine students, with an emphasis on mental health. Ella explained, that the residency became more about planning the structure for activities that focus on making young people feel comfortable and engaged."

Elle Evangelista completed a 2-week residency at the Royal Academy of Dance with mentor Matt Cornell. She used the time to create her new solo work 30THIRTY which was to premiere as part of the Flying Nun at Brand X. 30THIRTY is a 30 x 1-minute solos performed in succession, created with a stimulus from a curated list of 30 people writing Elle a birthday wish on her birthday, followed by 1 x 30-minute solo. Unfortunately, Flying Nun was unable to go ahead due to COVID; we look forward to seeing this performance in 2021.

Margot Politis Margot Politis completed her 1-week residency at the Australian College of Physical Education, with collaborator Liam O'Keefe and mentor Kay Armstrong to work on her new work in development, "Temperance".

Temperance investigates restraint as a critical virtue defined by Greek philosophy and examined through the female characters of Greek mythology, explored by utilising depth of space, physical theatre, sound and light.

improvisation. By unpacking the French monarch, Emma offered these findings as observations into herself as a female and also to women as a whole.

Gabriella Green Olea Gabriela Green completed her one-week residency at Campbelltown Arts Centre, with collaborator Ngioka BundaHeath and mentored by Emma Saunders. During this week she developed her work 'Historia, Memoria and Connection', her work explored her choreographic practice through research and healing, making links between her sense of belonging here in Australia and her Chilean cultural heritage.

Eliza Cooper and the Sydney Experimental Arts Ensemble (S.X.A.E) completed a 1-week residency at The McDonald College with mentor Kay Armstrong. Members of the S.X.A.E are: Mitchell Christie, Maxine Carlisle, Strickland Young, Allie Graham, Emalyn Knight, Jess Goodfellow, Emma Grill and Mason Peronchik. The DAIR residency was used to spend time on her upcoming dance film Bat Lake. Bat Lake is a dark comedy exposing the underground ecosystems of bats and other villainous animals. The work aims to bare these misunderstood creatures, bring their complex characters to life and reveal what lies beneath their mystique and drama.

Patricia Wood Patricia Wood used her 1-week residency to research the work of Trisha Brown, with her mentor Lee Serle, at the Australian College of Physical Education. Patricia used the time to enact a series of scores and physical explorations in order to develop a physical language in response to working with the idea of transmission and Trisha Brown's archival work.

"Having Lee in the space with me has been an enjoyable experience for many reasons, he has such clear embodied experience of Trisha Brown's movement vocabulary, which is so exciting to watch when he dances; and he shared a few personal memories of working with Trisha and being in relational to her invaluable practice." Innovating Dance Practice Grant

Lisa Maris McDonell spent two weeks at the world’s largest ‘Flamencoevent.’ During these two weeks, she participated in classes, workshops, and the viewing of performances presented by the world’s leading Flamenco practitioners. On return from Spain, she plans to use her research from her trip to develop a new experimental Flamenco solo, originally being presented in the later part 2020.

Omer Astrachan will be undertaking residencies in both Canada and Sydney. The 2-week residency in Vancouver will be mentored by Artist Director Idhan Cohen as part of Ne. While there he will deliver a workshop at the companies studio as a way to connect with the broader Canadian dance sector. Upon returning home Omer will spend a week with FORM Dance Projects, in which he will share his experience from his trip, and hold a workshop for dancers of Western Sydney.

Rhiannon Newton will undertake a period of international professional development, followed by international and regional residencies. She will participate in an IETM Plenary Meeting, attend programs as a part of Kunsten Festival des Arts and undertake key residencies in France and regional NSW.

The Innovating Dance Practice Grant (IDP) is an initiative of Ausdance NSW to assist professional dance practitioners residing in NSW to develop and innovate their practice through devolved funding from Create NSW on behalf of the NSW Government.

The last year of this funding was 2019 for projects to be completed in 2020. However, as 2020 saw the pandemic shut down borders across the globe, this greatly impacted the ability of the IDP artists to travel abroad as planned. Only 2 of the 6 residencies were able to take place. Residencies that were affected by COVID-19 were given assistance by the Ausdance team, and Gabriella, Omer, Rhiannon, and Robert will be given the opportunity to complete their activities when border restrictions have been lifted.

Robert Tinning will be undertaking a mentorship with dancer, Choreographer, Poet and Painter Lazaro Godoy (Jiří Kylián) and a mentorship residency with Visual/Conceptual Artist Don Lambert, both based in Miami. He will research innovative and crossdisciplinary approaches for his dance practice. He will consolidate the information with workshops alongside Norpa's associate artist and Gabriela Green will be heading to Europe for a professional development program with Dance Ability by Alito Alessi, the founder of the method. She will then travel to Germany to connect with Ensemble Beweg Grund Company. She will then head to London and Candoco Dance Company.

Professional Arts Learning Series (PALS) Webinars

PALS Webinars was born out of the lockdown period and the needs of the sector changing. Topics for these webinars emerged from the participants of our facilitated meetings which occurred during the COVID 19 lockdown period. We look forward to continuing these webinars in 2021.

What is Access in Dance?

Ausdance NSW, supported by Ausdance Victoria and the Sydney Opera House, together with Arts Access Victoria and Accessible Arts joined forces to present a free public forum on accessible dance education, training and practice. Arts Access Victoria CEO and internationally acclaimed Disabled Choreographer, Caroline Bowditch chated with Accessible Arts NSW Arts Development Officer and Musician/ Composer, Liz Martin, and Deaf Contemporary Dancer and Artistic Director of The Delta Project, Anna Seymour.

Probed by Ausdance NSW Projects & Programs Manager and Performance Researcher Kate Maguire-Rosier, Caroline, Liz and Anna together outlined the politics, language and processes relating to the disability arts community, addressing what accessible dance can look like today and answered questions from the attendees. This event attracted over 190 State, National and International attendees.

Key Questions discussed included: What do you think about when you think about dance and disability?

What has your experience been teaching as a teacher with disability, or with disabled students?

Have you seen a performance by a disabled choreographer? What was it?

What does access, and inclusion mean to you in the context of dance education or professional practice?

How does access enhance dance training and making?

International Dance Day David Throsby AO Post COVID-19 Funding Landscape Held on International Dance dance day and attended by 17 people, Ausdance NSW hosted eminent social and cultural economist David Throsby to present a free webinar. David discussed the future of dance amidst crisis and beyond and held a Q&A for Independent Dance Artists and Small-Medium Organisations to cope with projected funding challenges ahead.

Ausdance NSW developed the following key points from this webinar: We stand behind our First Nations elders working at this time to face the health crisis and the hardship it is causing in Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Indigenous communities across Australia. In particular, we second Blakdance’s observation that ‘We are constantly being reminded by our Elders that we have been through challenges before, and we carry that strength and knowledge within us. How can we continue honouring Country, our Elders, and ways of living, being and working, ways that have worked for thousands of years before our “industry”.’

We do not support the redirection of funds from one arts project to another.

Rather, Ausdance NSW calls for an increase in arts funding from the NSW state government.

We firmly believe in the role the Australia Council plays for the arts industry and recommend an increase in arts investment at a federal level via the Australia Council for the Arts.

The current crisis and data collection that's happening across the country (including Ausdance COVID-19 Impact Survey) can influence ABS and Cultural Ministers' Statistics Working Group to rethink their satellite accounts (including tourism) to more accurately reflect the realities of the arts and cultural sector, economic value, labour market and investment models. This data clearly makes the case that a relatively small investment in the arts industry will result in a ripple effect stimulating further spending in all the associated (satellite) industries such as hospitality and tourism. Can the national COVID-19 Arts Taskforce estimate the total value of the ripple effect for the arts and cultural sector stemming from the arts industry specifically? Is the Taskforce able to present the value in these broader terms to the government?

Finally, Ausdance NSW in conversation with NSW dance organisations would like to promote reflection on the idea of an ongoing 'Artskeeper' scheme. We have seen from Jobkeeper and Jobseeker packages that wage subsidies are indeed possible.

Seeing that employment for artists and arts workers is often temporary and fluctuates according to demand, how might such a scheme benefit and be justified by the arts industry, especially the dance sector? What might an artist-specific ongoing allowance look like in Australia?

Podcasts Ausdance In Conversation...

Ausdance In Conversation is a podcast created by Ausdance NSW that addresses issues affecting the dance sector and the wider arts community. In 2020, we produced 5 podcasts in collaboration with host Annalouise Paul and Dancing on Air that was broadcast on Radio Blue Mountains. During the COVID 19 period, the Ausdance NSW team adapted to the situation by using zoom to record these podcasts online and also using unsed recordings from the past.

Mental Health - The Artists The societal rise in awareness of mental health and surrounding issues is currently more evident than ever. These artists discuss the current mental health issues in dance.

DAIR Online As part of Alice Weber's Funded DAIR Online, she spoke to a dance artist in Poland about both of their experiences throughout the COVID 19 period.

Professional Development Workshops for Teachers The workshops can be attended individually or as a series and are designed as an opportunity for teachers to stay current and connected to top Australian dance makers and educators in the sector. The aim is to empower the teachers and students to create innovative tools beyond genre and age lines and advocate for dance in their schools, studios and communities. All courses are open to teachers from across all stages and have been tailored to support syllabus learning outcomes. These courses are also approved by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), enabling teachers to receive a certain number of hours formally needed for their ongoing professional development.

HSC Dance: Developing professional knowledge to plan coherent and engaging teaching programs to improve student learning This one-day professional development course was presented at the Australian College of Physical Educations and facilitated by HSC dance examiner Carla Cherrie and the coordinator of the Dance department at Kirrawee High School. The day unpacked composition in the curriculum and they learned how to lead their students to higher attainment of creativity in dance. Teachers gained NESA accredited hours at a proficient level and expanded their knowledge in: Developing student understanding of working with stimulus and creating motifs with intent through abstraction Creating meaningful phrases – developing compositional skills for their students.

This year, the HSC Dance Professional Development Day took place at the same time as the Safe Dance Conference, which gave the teachers the opportunity to attend a lunchtime round table discussion about how to conduct safe dance in schools.

Primary Creative Arts Dance This course is aimed at Primary school teachers that don't necessarily have a background or experience in dance. Teachers learn to teach their students performance, composition and appreciation of dance in their primary school classroom. This one-day course was scheduled to take place at McDonald College and facilitated by Rachael Devine in March of 2020. However unfortunately this course had to be cancelled due to the COVID 19 lockdown. We look forward to running this program in 2021.

Professional Development Workshops for Artists These workshops aim to enhance the practice of dance artists, educators and choreographers including composition, technique and dance by children.

Guest artists provide insights and information that equip the artists and teachers to further their knowledge of the dance practice.

ReadyMade Works Open Classes ReadyMade Works invited us to curate an Open Class Series presented as part of the March Dance Festival for the Sydney independent dance sector. We also provided financial support for this project as well as inkind project design and management. The classes began in March and were very successful however unfortunately due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the remainder of the classes were cancelled.

Amy Butler Masterclass in Inclusive Choreography Senior dance artist from StopGap Dance Company, an integrated UK dance company, Amy Butler approached us with the hope of connecting to the local Sydney dance and disability community. We were also joined by Sweeney Interpreting to Auslan interpret the event and make it more accessible. In turn, we presented a masterclass in Inclusive Choreography, an event that brokered a relationship with Blind artist Holly Craig and audio describer, Imogen Yang.

Associated Organisations Ausdance NSW has established and continues to develop and support relationships with three dance organisations based in New South Wales: Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub and Flipside Project Director Cadi McCarthy Dance Integrated Australia Director Philip Channels Murmuration Artistic Director Sarah-Vyne Vassallo The scope of this support incorporates mentoring and coaching, marketing of programs, administrations and auspicing services and strategic advice based on the companies needs. During the COVID-19 period, this support became largely about navigating through a pandemic and post pandemic landscape.,

Dance Integrated Australia Byron Hinterland of the NSW Northern Rivers Region

Philip Channells is the founder, creative director, and producer of Dance Integrated Australia. Dance Integrated Australia works across high-caliber collaborative environments and is founded on principles of inclusivity and respect, challenging mindsets and perceptions, and unique and extraordinary audience experiences. It lays a foundation from which emerging artists launch their careers and creates a community of dancers, choreographers, and cross art form collaborators.

In 2020 Dance Integrated Australia was one of a handful of Northern Rivers based artists/arts organisations that took part in The Quadrangle’s Together // Alone initiative with the MOVE IT – Live Online project. This was a free, weekly live to air dance workshop series led by Philip Channells that was published on its accompanying website: www.moveitdancefitnessfun.com.

In 2021 the MOVE IT Dance Fitness Fun workshop program will expand with classes in Byron Bay, Newrybar, Repentance Creek, Brunswick Heads, and Brooklet (Gaia Retreat & Spa) and two new classes being led by Leigh-Anne Vizer in Tyalgum and Coolangatta as well as the plan for some public performances!

Murmuration

Sydney and Cootamundra, New South Wales Murmuration is Australia’s pioneering integrated performance company based in Western Sydney that began as an emerging company in 2015 by Artistic Director, Sarah-Vyne Vassallo and Associate Director, Dan Daw. Murmuration works with a collective of interdisciplinary professional artists with and without disability. The company collaborates with the unique perspectives, physicality and lived experiences of its artists, to create engaging and thought-provoking arts and entertainment.

Murmuration released a statement at the beginning of 2020: “After careful consideration and consultation with key stakeholders Murmuration will be taking a hiatus from full-time operations in the year 2020, to support our Artistic Director’s desire to pursue opportunities and creative endeavours within the wider arts and entertainment industry. Catapult and Flipside Project

Newcastle, New South Wales Catapult, led by Artist Director Cadi McCarthy, is a professional choreographic, multi-disciplinary and contemporary dance hub. Programs are multi-pronged, highlighting Newcastle's artistic identity, as an incubator and producer of the highest quality professional arts practice, supporting choreographic development, collaboration across disciplines, and the building of new communities for contemporary dance practice.

Catapult's programs include a professional dance company whose works are commissioned by mid-career choreographers by local Hunter-based composers, a professional artist in residence program which includes choreographic and multi-disciplinary residencies, and International/ Regional residencies.

The Flipside project involves a youth dance ensemble carrying out a multi-arts program. During the COVID 19 period this program this briefly shifted online.

Member and Artist Services Auspicing Auspicing is a service provided to members of Ausdance NSW. The management of grant funds for individuals/organisations who have limited infrastructure. This involves uniquely crafted arts management consultations specific to each artist/group. This can include; planning, grant writing, growth planning, risk management and administrative support (contracting, invoicing, brokering).

One to One Meetings Members are given the opportunity to meet with an Ausdance NSW to receive valuable information and advice on career pathways, funding, career progression and general practice. General one-on-one meetings are a service Ausdance NSW continues to provide its members as a courtesy and essential opportunity for those in need of advice, support and information.

Since March 2020, Ausdance NSW has fielded on average 120 calls and emails per week specific to the COVID-19 crisis in dance. A large proportion of these contacts are from dancers, companies and studios who are new to us do not receive government support.

Led by these conversations, our focus groups and consultations during this time, the team responded with resources, brokerage assistance, extended communication strategy and bespoke arts administration services.

Ausdance NSW hosted 29 statewide facilitated meetings with over 100 Dance Studio Owners, 50 Independent Dance Artists and 50 Dance Organisations as well as co-hosted 6 inter-state facilitated meeting with Ausdance Victoria.

Digital Reach During the COVID period, the digital read of Ausdance NSW expanded due to weekly ENews and updating the website daily with COVID 19 updates, resources and restrictions as well as engaging and promoting the dance sector through 'What's On Virtual" and online sharings and events such as DAIR online sharing, What is Acess in Dance webinar and Making Space launch watch party.
