Senior communication major

Meet Aliyah I love to be involved, and I’m involved with a lot here. Aurora University offers so many opportunities for students to explore their interests, whether you like sports or service work or social activities — or all of them, like I do. I’ll admit it, I like to talk, and that’s one reason I chose to major in speech communication. I wanted to merge my love for talking with my love for sports. Communication offers a broad spectrum of courses that will help me do that. I hope one day to work for a sports broadcasting network. I think that my being in extra-curricular activities will help me in my career, too. I’m a Spartan Ambassador in the admission office, where I get to meet with prospective students; chair of the Activities Programming Board, which is responsible for planning social and entertainment activities across campus; and president of Fashion Loves You, an organization that not only puts on fashion shows but also have clothing drives for a local homeless shelter and the on-campus professional clothing closet, the Spartan Attic. I think what I enjoy most is being a peer advisor. I recently mentored 26 freshmen and several said I made their freshman year the best ever. It’s nice to know that I made a difference in someone’s life. Whatever your love, there’s an organization for it at Aurora University.

Sophomore business administration major

Meet Nicholas

I’ve played baseball ever since I could swing a bat. In fact, I first heard about Aurora University when I was playing in a tournament in Plainview, Illinois. AU coaches were there, they saw me play, contacted me and started the recruiting process. As that progressed, I visited campus on several occasions and every time I was here I just loved it that much more. I’m from Parker, Colorado, just southeast of Denver. I chose to come to AU not only because of baseball. It had a genuine family feel to it, and I wanted to be part of a smaller, close-knit community. AU has become my home away from home. For me, the best part about AU is being able to get to know everyone in my classes. Plus, I have a more personal relationship with my teachers here than I could at a larger school. In class, I’m not just a number, my professors know me by name. I’m now a sophomore. While I’m not quite sure yet what I’ll be doing after graduation, as a business major I am learning a lot about myself and my interests, some of which surprises me. I dreaded having to take a financial accounting course last semester, but the teacher turned out to be awesome. I enjoyed it so much that I’m even thinking about changing my major.

2015 AU Graduate

Meet Hector

The great thing about my time at Aurora University is that I found out what really matters to me — politics — and I gained the skills, support and connections necessary to pursue it as a career. I currently serve as a deputy coroner in the Kane County Clerk’s Office. My long-range goal is to run for elected office. Political jobs are not usually posted online; you have to rely on your network. My professors always emphasized how important it is to build a network and to use it. They encouraged me to get involved, whether through oncampus jobs, internships or community events. I took their advice to heart, and ultimately I found my first job through the network I began to build here as a student. By being so connected to the community, AU offers great opportunities. I was able to obtain an internship one summer working in Washington, D.C., for an organization called ProMexico, a subdivision of Mexico’s Secretariat of Economy that works to encourage international trade. My work there involved establishing relationships between the Mexican government and U.S. aerospace companies. AU boosted my career in other ways too. Career Services helped me with my resume and with interview prep. Anything I needed, they were there for me. At AU I was able to develop strong relationships with the administration, my professors and other students. At a larger school, I don’t think I would have been able to do that.
