this project, developed in collaboration with sara musovic, focuses on the adaptive reuse of an existing building in karlsruhe, currently used partially as a grocery shopping space. the building is connected to residential buildings behind it, and our task was to integrate four new functions into the two building blocks: a café, an office, a presentation room, and a showroom for sustainable building materials.

our design approach prioritized maintaining the original building structure and materials wherever possible, ensuring a mindful and sustainable renovation process. to reflect the sustainable focus of the building, we incorporated eco-friendly materials such as clay, wood, hemp, and bricks, all of which are showcased in the showroom. we chose a color palette of natural, warm, earthy tones to complement the materials used and enhance the overall aesthetic, while also allowing the showcased materials to stand out prominently. we logically structured the building into two main zones. the public zone is open to guests, allowing them to explore and engage with the space freely. in contrast, the private zone is not accessible at all times, providing necessary privacy for specific functions. we utilized the existing concrete structure to delineate these zones effectively. at the heart of our design concept is a stair system that not only enables guests to access the lower level but also connects the two buildings. along these stairs, large panels and shelves display the sustainable materials, inviting visitors to see and touch them. this interactive element enhances the educational aspect of the showroom, making sustainability tangible. the façade design adheres to the same principles as the interior, showcasing the building‘s original structure through the use of wooden beams on the exterior. this approach honors the building‘s history while seamlessly integrating it with the new sustainable design.

through this project, we aimed to create a harmonious blend of the old and the new, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and respect for the building‘s heritage. the result is a thoughtfully designed space that serves multiple functions while promoting eco-friendly materials and practices.

the task for this project was to design a pavilion for the bundesgartenschau (buga) 2024 in mannheim, using basic geometric shapes as a starting point.

my design is based on a combination of triangular and rectangular forms. the structure tapers forward and increases in height. the proportions of the individual parts of the pavilion are harmoniously balanced. the aim was to guide visitors through the pavilion, allowing views to the outside only through the narrow side openings between the different parts, while forward views were obstructed by suspended wall panels. this design choice ensures that the final reveal, a view of the buga grounds, becomes the ultimate „artwork“ at the end of the journey.

the pavilion model was constructed at a scale of 1:20 using grey cardboard. interior photographs were taken and subsequently edited with photoshop to enhance the visual presentation.

in this course, we were tasked with analyzing a building of our choice. following the analysis, we were to create a modified 3d model of the building and visualize this model in two different ways using photoshop. the inspiration for the first visualization was open to our choice, while the second visualization had to focus on sustainable building materials.

i chose ludwig godefroy‘s merida house as my subject, which i then recreated in a modified form using rhino3d. the first visualization drew inspiration from the renowned japanese architect tadao ando. the concept envisioned the building largely constructed from exposed cast concrete, with doors and shutters made of black steel. plants and colorful furniture were added to contrast and breathe life into the architecture.

for the second visualization, the building was reimagined using repurposed shipping containers. the interior was designed to be lined with esb-panels, emphasizing sustainability and innovative reuse of materials.

in the furniture theory 2 course, we were tasked with technically planning a kitchen based on our spatial design from the first semester. the focus was on the planning of the cabinetry, which forms the foundation of the kitchen. in addition to a 3d model and visualizations, the kitchen design required dimensioned technical drawings of all views as well as detailed drawings.

the kitchen was designed to exude simple elegance while remaining inviting. to achieve this, i utilized a high-quality yet limited material palette with natural color tones. the harmonious combination of walnut wood and fine stoneware creates the desired warm and welcoming impression despite the minimalist design. black powder-coated steel fixtures complete the overall aesthetic. a standout feature is the gas cooktops situated on an otherwise monolithic kitchen island, which also functions as a bar.

this project from the second semester‘s construction course builds upon our initial spatial design. the task was to comprehensively plan the entire building, utilizing timber frame construction with a ventilated rainscreen façade. this project was a collaborative effort with sara musovic.

the two-story building is anchored on a reinforced concrete foundation within an excavation filled with foam glass gravel for added insulation and stability. the floor features floating screed, providing a smooth and durable surface. both the interior and exterior walls are constructed using a timber frame method, ensuring structural integrity and design flexibility. a key feature is the ventilated rainscreen façade, which allows for effective moisture regulation and enhances thermal performance. this façade system also contributes to the building‘s modern aesthetic.

the building is topped with a flat roof and parapet, creating a sleek and contemporary look. the flat roof design complements the overall aesthetic and provides space for potential future installations like solar panels or a green roof. throughout the project, we focused on integrating sustainable building practices and materials. the use of timber framing and foam glass gravel for the foundation enhances the building‘s insulation and energy efficiency.

overall, this construction project exemplifies a thoughtful and detailed approach to modern building design, combining structural efficiency, aesthetic appeal, and sustainability.
