WHAT IT IS THE LOCKDOWN PROJECT?

I had just moved into a new shop in Prenzlauer Berg four months ago when the first lockdown came. How to manage a new shop, a new district with a closed shop ?

Even if my brand is almost 10 years old, it will be the tenth anniversary in January 2022, I remain a local designer who needs the visitors and tourists of the city to live. After some time of reflection, anguish and stress, things started to live again but in November 2020 a new confinement, which was the trigger to set up a vision, a creative project.

Time to gather my ideas and propose them, I created a first step of the Lockdown Project with the photographer Louis Fernandez. The idea was simple but symbolic of a resistance while keeping an active creativity and mutual support, combining our strengths and talents. 3 protagonists taking advantage, using and spreading each other's qualities: a clothing designer, a photographer all embellished by a creative personality. Respecting the sanitary rules and optimizing our needs by using what we had, that is to say my closed boutique which became for 9 shootings a photo studio.

We started on February 3rd, but Louis had to leave the project for a contract in Quebec, so I invited Paula G. Vidal to pursue the collaboration and the adventure continued until March 19th. With a total of 43 participants! A fantastic feat of mutual aid.

AURELIA PAUMELLE

FASHION DESIGNER Since 2011 I have created my own brand of clothing inspired by a fusion of street-wear couture. Having lived and worked for 10 years in Paris I was trained at the Chambre Syndicale de Couture Parisienne and did my apprenticeship at Galliano, Yves St Laurent, Sonia Rykiel, balenciaga and other fashion houses where I learned the techniques of the trade and developed my knowledge and skills.

For many years now I have been creating my unisex and timeless collections using dead stock fabrics of the fashion houses, my new shop in Prenzlauer Berg is also a meeting place where I organize events once a month. Presentation of regional and local products, artists' exhibitions, readings, conferences. I like to bring people together and make my space available. Creating a community is important to me, we support, inspire and represent each other. @aureliapaumelle

LOUIS FERNANDEZ PHOTOGRAPHER

I’m a French-Canadian freelance musician and photographer based in Berlin since 2017. After participating in the International Class at Neue Schule für Fotografie in 2018, I had the pleasure to take workshops with Thomas Rusch (Hamburg) and with Pierre Radisic (Barcelona). As a passionate analogue photographer and printer, I like to explore the nature of intimacy and authenticity in our culture.

In the beginning of February, Aurelia Paumelle asked me to participate in an artistic collaboration that would present her work as a designer, my work as a photographer as well as Berlin-based artists and personalities who were – just like us – affected by the lockdown. The idea was to dress these creative people with Aurelia’s fashion in order to have their portraits taken.

Being in a second lockdown and with both my music and photographic work on hold, I approved the idea of interacting and connecting with other creative people – making them visible.

I mDue to the Corona regulations, we reduced every single photoshoot to only 30 minutes up to an hour.

Still, it was enough time to feel a great bond with everyone. It was important and helpful to share personal stories about how the pandemic affected everyone’s projects, businesses, or emotional security.

I felt a great sense of strength, empathy, kindness and most of all a deep passion vibrating in everyone.

I am very grateful to have been part of this soulful collaboration. And I wish Aurelia and all future participants a great amount of fun and most of all health and never-ending hope in these difficult times. @louisfernandezphotography

SUZY ROYAL Suzy Royal is an independent curator based in Berlin. She holds an MA from the CourtauldInstitute in London and a PhD from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, bothin art history.

With her international experience in museums such as the Getty Museum and the LosAngeles County Museum of Art, auction houses, academia, galleries, as well as a non-profitart foundation, she has a deep understanding of the art world and the industry behind it.Most recently, in collaboration with the Berlin-based Enter Art Foundation, she curated over10 successful exhibitions, scouting and exhibiting over 300 emerging and mid-career artistsfrom all over the world. @suzy_royal

As a visual Artist, born in Chicago based in Berlin since 2014, I was part of the Lockdown Project wearing the collaboration I did with Aurelia I have always had a deep interest in diverse ancient cultures. These influences come alive while working on the bomber jacket. Using a hot engraving iron, I have branded my visualization of an ancient writing. These writings represent a positive energy and knowledge. The branded writings on the sleeves are done on dead stock Greek leather as the recycling is a very important part in my work. @gregoryrobin_studio

Is a Berlin based producer and business development consultant. A specialist in the fashion industry for more than two decades. In 2011, relocated to Germany covering Europe’s fashion markets for trade publication WWD. In New York, she operated Quinto + Company Inc, a marketing, public relations, and fashion-show production company from 1993 to 2010. Its client roster ranged from American designer Bibhu Mohapatra and Dutch lingerie specialist Marlies Dekkers to Marc Jacobs, Sean John, Marithé + François Girbaud, and many luxury brands.

GAMZE YALCIN Gamze Yalçın, Istanbul, 1987

Berlin based visual artist and painter, born and grew up in Istanbul, Turkey. Graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Art University in 2010.

Her work mainly deals with the theme of female forms, dreams, landscape and plants.

Characterised by a colorful palette, cosmic signs, female power and journey stories.

My name is Paula G.Vidal, I am a French Berliner photographer and I have been working as a freelancer since 2015. @paula.gvidal

Through event and documentary photography I felt the urge to get to know people more in depth, understand them and their stories. This is how my passion for portrait photography developed. Today I feel confident enough to work with a wide variety of people in different situations. In doing so, I focus on bringing their strengths and character to light.

More recently, I have directed my work towards birth and Family photography, for which I now have a great passion.

Trilingual in French, German and English, I am always happy to meet people and I am willing to participate in new projects or photography initiatives.

When Aurelia proposed me to join her collaboration "Lockdown Project" I felt immediately inspired.

My contact with Aurelia came via an unexpected connection through a mutual female artist friend of ours. This happy coincidence, stemmed from the impressively fast-growing network of female artists in Berlin, felt like a natural fit.

The energy Aurelia brought to the project was empowering. The idea of a community exchange project which uses collaborative art to then uplift other artists instilled a sense of hope in me, especially during this second lockdown. This second lockdown, which has felt surprisingly more painful than the first one. This second lockdown, which has depleted the motivation for inspiration or creativity. Meeting and exchanging ideas with all the people involved in the project was heartening as we shared our experiences of the lockdown. In these moments we finally felt less isolated and were reminded that despite our current situation, we can still feel that sense of community.

EMANOUELA TODOROVA

Hi, I’m Emanouela, born in Bulgaria, raised in France and Berliner since 2018. I came here to challenge myself with the plan to stay only 6 months and, well, I kind of felt in love with almost everything here. I started a project into fighting against sexism and street harassment in July 2020 and I came up with writing a book which will be released in June.

When Paula called me for this project I felt honored to be part of the team. I really appreciated meeting Aurelia and also discovering her amazing work. She deserves to be more famous! Let’s all empower each other! @emanouelaa

is a multifaceted designer based in Berlin. She is Designer and Owner of her eyewear label Veronika Wildgruber, a high-end eyewear and sunglasses collection produced in Germany and Italy.

The look of her eyewear is strong and distinct, inspired by architecture, the future and geometry.

Besides her eyewear collection Veronika is designing for French luxury brand Hermès. This collaboration includes pattern for silk items, such as scarfs and ties, household fabrics, wallpapers and jewellery.

I am a French bass-baritone. I moved to Berlin 8 years ago because I fell in love with this city - I find it liberating, inspiring, and a great place for creatives and artists. Nikolaus Schneider is an artist and cultural entrepreneur based in Berlin.

Born in Dresden in 1982 and trained as a cellist, he moved to Berlin in 2005 where he studied acting.

In October 2012, Nikolaus Schneider made his directorial debut with his own creation Exposure Berlin, a site-specific music theater at the Delphi.

Gregory Robin, visual artist - Chicago born based in Berlin since 2014 - My interest in sustainability and up cycling is very important to me. My background as an Artist is primarily a painter. These scrap fabrics were given a second life by transforming them into clothing like the jacket I wear on the photo. I use the scrap fabric as a brush stroke, a painting without paint that you can wear. This ruff abstract vision was realized by the craftsmanship and impeccable detail for Aurelias skills. YAPRAK ARAS

After working in the press for years (my latest title was “Features Editor of Vogue Turkey”), I started organizing markets and festivals with my musician boyfriend in Istanbul. That was 7 years ago! Events turned into an offline store 5 years ago and then into an online store called Souq Dukkan (www.souqdukkan.com) where we gather up-and-coming designers, independent brands and artists.

We moved to Berlin a couple of years ago. We made themed markets and events until last March and we are working for our new project at the moment! @souq.berlin / @souq.dukkan

ANDRÉ PAHL

My name is André Pahl, I’m in town here since a decade and doing UX design and creative coding. My biggest dedication, music, started at my destination before Berlin: Mexico City, where I spent some years. I was co-running a small music label there, and just by coincidence started to DJ as well — then over the years it became the most joyful thing for me, including all the travels, encounters and adventures.

What connects all the different genres and timespans of music that I like and play is that it has a cinematic touch, it’s mostly psychedelic and has a slower heart beat rate. I hope we can listen & dance together soon again! @andre_pahl
