The National Mall is the place that refers to the historical area that encompasses many of DC’s monuments and museums. In July and August, the Screen on the Green Film Festival presented by HBO allows patrons to watch old movies out under the stars. Pack a picnic, grab some friends, and enjoy some great times! Screenings begin after sundown, admission is free. Closest Metrorail stop: Smithsonian (Blue/Orange Line) or Archives (Green/Yellow Line)

See legislation debated and voted on in the Capitol, see the highest court of the United States, and review history in the Library of Congress. The Capitol building sits on the DC’s highest point and no other building in DC can be taller than Lady Freedom which tops the exterior dome. Guided tours are available at the through the visitors’ center. Enter at the East Front plaza of the U.S. Capitol at First Street and East Capitol Street. The Supreme Court and Library of Congress are across the street. Closest Metrorail stop: Union Station (Red Line) or Capitol South (Blue/Orange Line)

White House

The White House is the official residence and primary workplace of the president of the United States. It is surrounded by the public parks, Lafayette Square and The Ellipse. Nearby at 675 15th Street Northwest is Old Ebbitt Grill, a Washinton classic where presidents and lawmakers have dined. Closest Metrorail stop: Metro Center (Red Line)

Dupont Circle, a lively urban park at the center of this community, attracts picnicking visitors, office workers, bicycle messengers, chess players and assorted passersby. Dupont Circle is a center for vibrant life, coffee shops, people watching, and going out for a night on the town. Closest Metrorail Stop: Dupont Circle (Red Line). You can also take the N4 bus near Ward Circle Building to Dupont Circle.

The Folger Shakespeare Library

A magnet for scholars from around the globe, the Folger Library is home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare’s printed works and other rare Renaissance works. It has a number of public programs including plays, concerts, and exhibitions. Open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Location: 201 East Capitol Street, SE Closest Metrorail Stop: Capitol South (Blue/Orange Line)
