From the Head Welcome to the Augusta Prep Annual Report!

Prep Financial Corner

As the new Head of School for Augusta Prep, it’s exciting and heartening to see so much of our Prep Family taking the lead as supporters of our school’s Annual Fund and being listed in this magazine for giving to the school we all love. The level of dedication you have shown to Augusta Prep reinforces what I have already come to know about our school community – that we truly are a family and that our future together as Cavaliers is a bright one indeed! At the start of this school year, I asked our faculty and staff to create a list of words that they felt best described our school, and by far the most common word was “Family.” Other key words were “Diverse,” “Well-rounded,” “Academic Rigor,” and “Innovative,” to name a few. I would agree with all of these and more. Our faculty and staff have embraced an acronym that I feel best sums up the core of who we are to be and what you should expect from us as a school. That acronym is “HEART” – Honesty, Effort, Attitude, Respect, and Trust. You should always expect honesty from us, a strong effort to do our best, a day filled with a positive attitude, respect for one another, and you can trust that we are focused on providing your child the best education possible. I hope you will enjoy this publication, which along with a list of our donors includes highlights from the past school year and features some of our key donors who give not only to Prep but also in their community at large. Thank you again for your philanthropy and for your love of Augusta Prep! Sincerely,

Peter Huestis Head of School

Special to this year’s Annual Report Welcome to another Augusta Prep Annual Report - this time featuring a theme in the presentation of our pictures. Most of the photos in this magazine are black and white with color brought forward in certain areas. This is to represent how your donation to Augusta Prep helps breathe life into our school, advancing forward our mission. This year, we also are featuring the stories of some key donors, who not only give to Augusta Prep but also make contributions to their community at large.

From the Board Greetings Augusta Prep Family, It is with great expectation that I enter the 20152016 school year as Augusta Prep’s Board of Trustees Chairman for a second year! I know this will again be an amazing time of continued excellence for our school as we welcome in new Head of School Peter Huestis and interim Head of Upper School Dr. Gerry Chambers amid a search for a permanent leader of our Upper School. It truly is an exciting time to be at Augusta Prep, and I am impressed daily at the accomplishments of our students and the dedication and hard work of our faculty and staff. This past school year was another one to celebrate - from the skilled guidance of previous Interim Head of School Ferrell Singleton to our students’ many achievements in and out of the classroom. For the second year in a row, Augusta Prep had the STAR student for Columbia County and the region, and the area’s STAR teacher also came from Prep - a title that particular teacher has earned an amazing 12 times. The past school year was one in which we had increased enrollment and graduated our school’s largest class of seniors - 60. Augusta Prep likewise received the area’s highest ranking for private/ independent high schools and having one of the best independent high schools in the state of Georgia, according to the 2015 Niche rankings. The school also ranked high in the state in the category of Best Outcomes.

This school year promises to be just as special, and I look forward to experiencing the journey with you. Please know that your school’s Board of Trustees greatly appreciates your continued support of Augusta Prep, and it is an honor to serve for such a wonderful community of Cavaliers who make our county, our state, our nation, and our world a better place. Gratefully,

Grey B. Murray Chairman, APDS Board of Trustees

Middle School Production of “The Little Mermaid”

ur students had plenty of stage presence this past school year, with the Upper School offering the plays “Almost Maine” and “Curtains” and our Middle School presenting “The Little Mermaid” and “Everything I Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play.” We also once again held our annual “Prep’s Got Talent” talent contest in our Hull Fine Arts Center, and at the GISA State Literary and Music Competition Morgan Rawson, Juliana Hudson, and Kealy Ewart placed first in the girls’ trio competition; Juliana Hudson received second place in girls solo; and Vaughan Duncan took third place in boys solo.

e have so many talented faculty members at Augusta Prep who challenge our students daily in their critical thinking skills. In the Lower School, our iMac lab offers students an updated look at technology, and once again this year our students participated in an event called the “Hour of Code - a designated time during class when students learned the basics of computer coding through an international program aimed at developing such skills in students early on. Teachers such as Christine Alee in the Middle School (pictured right) also bring to life the lessons of the past through her History lessons, in this particular image talking to students about early American political races and asking them to prepare a mock news release for a blog or social media outlet about Andrew Jackson not running for a third term as president. This past year, our Upper School also challenged students with everything from shark dissections in a Biology class to a digital chess board that tracked the movements of students on a monitor and later provided an analysis of their gameplay.

Family with Augusta Prep Ties Gives Back in More Ways Than One

T

he look on the faces of those they save tells it all.

Love, safety, appreciation, and trust. Being well fed doesn’t hurt either. At the Crais family home in Burke County, it’s a feline paradise for the many cats who have been rescued into what Bob Crais laughingly says is “the life O’ Riley.” For the past 10 years, Bob and Judy Crais - whose son Aaron Crais (‘05) and daughter April Weber (‘99) both attended Augusta Prep - have given back to their community in more ways than one. In addition to their philanthrophy to Augusta Prep, they offer their home as a refuge for many stray and abandoned cats in Burke County, where there is a desperate need for animal rescue services.

Mr. and Mrs. Crais show their generous spirit daily by currently caring for a total of 30 cats at their spacious property. “We began working with Old Fella rescue group in Burke County when we realized there was a need for a place for cats,” Mrs. Crais said. “Burke County does not have a (government) program in place for abandoned animals, and unfortunately cats as well as dogs are often dropped off at the garbage dump. If animals are too feral to be adopted we try to trap them and have them spayed or neutered and then release them back into their group.” Mr. and Mrs. Crais have their own system as to how they classify and care for their feline friends. “Currently we have three separate groups of cats at our house,” Mrs. Crais said. “One group are our indoor cats. There are three of them who have health issues and would be difficult to place. We also have three kittens inside now that we are fostering for Kitti Konections ... The next group are the cats who could be adopted but are too feral, so we keep them in an air conditioned room and work with getting them used to people. When cages are open at Pet Smart, we take the ones who are ready. Our last group are too set in their ways to join a family! They have access to a barn and five acres to roam on. The key is to get them all spayed or neutered and to get all of the required shots.” Besides being a cat’s best friend, the Crais family also have been generous supporters of Augusta Prep. Their connection to the school started when they decided to send their children to Augusta Prep. “We became affiliated with Augusta Prep when our daughter was entering eighth grade and our son was starting second grade,” Mrs. Crais said. “Both children were enrolled in public school until that time. We came to realize that even though I taught in the school system, neither of our children were being challenged there. We have two very different children: one was a people pleaser who would always go one step further; the other was less interested in what others thought and would take the path of least resistance. Augusta Prep was a good fit for both of our children. They are now 34 and 28 years old and both are college graduates who remain in contact with friends from Augusta Prep.” The Crais family decided this past year to give a generous gift to Augusta Prep’s Annual Fund in appreciation of the school. “We participate in the Annual Fund and would encourage others to do so because there are many things that tuition alone cannot cover,” Mrs. Crais said. “Even though we no longer have children enrolled in Augusta Prep, we feel that this school is an important part of the community. We feel an obligation to ensure that the school and its programs remain available to students in this area. We benefitted from financial aid when our children were enrolled at Augusta Prep and feel this is our way to give back.”

Building a N

an Easler stands at a construction site a close drive away from Augusta Prep.

Just like the nearby independent school that two of her children attend, this plot of earth is a location near and dear to her heart. Easler is the Capital Campaign Chair for the construction of a new SafeHomes location that one day will become a safe haven for women who need protection and a helping hand toward a brighter life ahead. “The mission of SafeHomes is, ‘to transform victims of domestic violence into survivors and be a catalyst to bring about the end of domestic violence in our region,’ ” Easler said, adding that she became involved with SafeHomes as part of a community assessment process she was involved with in 2013. “...I learned that SafeHomes is the only domestic violence shelter for 10 counties in Georgia. They have operated out of the same facility for more than 30 years. I knew I had to get involved when I learned that in 2013 alternate emergency shelter had to be found for more than 330 domestic victims of domestic violence. The demand was far beyond what the current facility could provide.” So, Easler got involved with the fundraising effort to build a new shelter, which is projected to open by October 2016, providing emergency housing to twice as many victims. “When an individual finally gets the courage and makes the decision to leave, they need all the support they can get to break free from the cycle of violence and establish safe and productive lives for themselves and their children,” she said. “The least I could do was help raise the capital and get involved with an organization that was the only resource for so many in crisis.” The new facility will be unique in that it will have an “open” concept. “Given significant improvements in security, its location will no longer have to be kept secret,” Easler said, noting that the new structure also will now house SafeHomes administration and staff, which currently operate in a separate location from the actual shelter. Having staff in the same building, she said, “gives victims optimal access to the numerous services provided by SafeHomes.” Giving back to the community is nothing new for Easler. The mother of Charlie, an Augusta Prep senior, and Ally, a Prep junior, Easler also is a key donor to Augusta Prep, giving a significant gift this past year to the school’s Annual Fund. She has been part of the Augusta Prep family for nine years and says it’s a priviledge to give back to the school each year. “I give to the Annual Fund because Augusta Prep is family,” she said. “The small class sizes, opportunities for students to experience a diversity of activities, and exceptional faculty and staff are just a few of the traits of Prep that I treasure. The inspiration for giving is the family ties that are palpable at Prep. The school comes together in a heartfelt unity to take care of, encourage and provide for each other in times of sorrow, illness, crisis, and times of celebration.” Easler said that just as SafeHomes is meeting a big need in the community, Augusta Prep also is offering a crucial service that goes unmatched in our area. “I admire the opportunities for life experiences beyond the academic rigor, instructors who teach students to think for themselves and explore concepts outside the box,” she said of Augusta Prep. “It is a place where academic excellence is expected from the faculty and from the students among themselves. There is positive peer pressure to achieve excellence. However, I would say my favorite thing is that Prep provides an environment where diversity and individual differences are embraced and encouraged.”

An Alumnus Gives Back

Rob Harding, Class of 1967 Below is a Q&A with Augusta Prep alumnus Rob Harding, who recently retired as the CEO of the company FormFast, which creates solutions for healthcare providers by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of their organization. 1.) How did Augusta Prep prepare you for life after high school? For me, the most important skill learned was effective communication. I learned to write and speak properly. I read the great classics, unwillingly. I learned good vocabulary as well as Latin and French, which helped me to understand and interpret the written and spoken word. In my chosen career as a businessman, it gave me a big edge. I didn’t have to hire people to create white papers, marketing pieces, proposals, or letters. I could deal with senior executives in writing and in person. They notice. 2.) Could you tell us a fond memory you have of Augusta Prep? I have many fond memories but none that I can tell you all about. Well, OK, one fun thing was when our class “stole” the bleachers. We actually moved them into the woods for a while. The headmaster reported the theft to the police and insurance. Did he really think someone would steal bleachers? We moved them back during history class, and history was created. 3.) Why do you give to Augusta Prep’s Annual Fund, and what would you say to a fellow Augusta Prep graduate to encourage them to give? We had teachers that really cared and gave us a terrific education. They understood young people. When you are young, the tendency is to take rather than to give and to think about yourself before others. Later, as an adult, it is your turn to give back. I had many good friendships and positive experiences at Prep, and I want that to continue for others. 4.) Are there any community outreach efforts you’re involved in where you live? I have served on the Board of Gateway180 in St. Louis for eight years as Chairman and other leadership functions. Gateway180 is the largest homeless shelter in the state of Missouri. My company sponsors their annual golf tournament fundraiser. This is a fun event for the employees and gives them a chance to contribute to the community by their support. I have served on the Board of the St. Louis Unitarian Foundation for Children in which role we primarily evaluate local charities for the value they bring to underprivileged children and fund them accordingly. I have worked with St. Martha’s Hall (a battered women’s shelter) babysitting for children while the mothers receive services. That included the opportunity to be Santa Claus, somewhat unwillingly, but it turned out to be a blast! I sponsored a brown bag program for my church and ran that for six to seven years. I served on the Board of SouthSide Day Nursery, which is a preschool providing free or subsidized services to single mothers, allowing them to serve in the workforce. It has all been fun and rewarding and an attempt to counterbalance some poor behavior from time to time. 5.) Tell us a bit about where you now reside and any family details you might like to share. My wife of 40 years, Susan, and myself have just moved from St. Louis to Franklin, TN near Nashville to be closer to my daughter Allison and her family and to take a stab at retirement. Franklin is an historical town with many beautiful antebellum homes. It feels and smells like Augusta … lots of azaleas, magnolias, warm air, and warm people. We get visitors here from all over the world to see our early 20th century downtown and hope to get a glimpse of the many country western music stars who live here and in the Nashville area. My daughter lived in the same condo building as Taylor Swift for years. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw live out our way. Music is on every street corner! We love our new home. 6.) Beyond your being an alumnus of Augusta Prep, do you or any of your other family members have ties to Augusta Prep? My sister, Kate Harding Wanderer, was in the first graduating class of APS in 1965. We were both privileged to have scholarships to APS, which gave us the academic training to gain admission to top colleges. 7.) Who was your favorite teacher at Augusta Prep when you attended? Miss Emily Sheftall, later married to Dr. Hervey Cleckley, was a brilliant and passionate English teacher. She drove us crazy with sentence diagrams, appreciation of the classics, and she ran a tight ship. I am quoted in the yearbook saying to her “I am not rude.” I don’t know what that was about. I guess the Cavalier needed quotes.
