S

omeone once said it’s impossible to think about tomorrow without reflecting on yesterday.

I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately.

As you’ll see in this issue, Augustana has finalized architectural plans for the new Froiland Science Complex, the most intricate building endeavor in our 153-year-history. This project, the pinnacle and final initiative of our $120 million Momentum Augustana campaign, will include a 41,000-square-foot addition to the existing Gilbert Science Center along with a complete renovation of the existing facility.

As you’ll see from the renderings in the pages that follow, when it’s complete, the Froiland Complex will be a state-of-the-art facility well-equipped to educate the next generation of students and beyond.

Planning this project has been an immense task and I can’t begin to thank our many faculty, staff and administrators who have spent countless hours thinking about what this new facility should be in order to serve students in the best ways possible.

Throughout this process, I’ve thought a lot about the men and women who formed the cornerstone for our Natural Science division – those who taught classes in Old Main, then in the Administration building and, after WWII, in a renovated Army barracks. Their passion for scientific discovery and commitment to teaching truly did build the culture of excellence that exists today. When the Gilbert Science Center opened in

1966 under the leadership of Dr. Sven Froiland, biology professor and chair of the division, it did so to great acclaim. To honor Dr. Froiland’s legacy, we believe it’s fitting that the newest science facility on campus be named in his honor.

Many of our emeriti scientists who taught alongside Dr. Froiland will be here on the day the new facility is officially complete – and I can’t wait to see the joy on their faces.

Others, sadly, will not be with us. And so I’m left to wonder what their reactions would have been.

What would Dr. Froiland think of the new biology department and its core research labs? What would Dr. V.R. Nelson think of the new physics department with its research space and open study areas? And our dear friend Dr. Dan Swets – taken from us far too soon – what would he think of the new computer science department and its ample space for student-faculty collaboration?

Would they be pleased?

I believe they would, knowing that throughout all of the planning, the principles they taught us have remained top of mind and close to heart.

It really is important to look back before you look ahead, which is why this issue features individuals who have the wisdom to

reflect on the past and the present.

Among others, we’ll introduce you to Dr. Rayburn Skoglund, class of 1959, who spent his career working in pediatric neurology; Dr. Gene Hoyme, class of 1972, who is using genetics to pave new roads for primary care; and our own Bill Gross, class of 1973, who is preparing for a new role at Augustana after 28 years as athletic director.

It’s a privilege to share their stories and, it’s a pleasure, indeed, to share the renderings and plans for the Froiland Complex with you.

Finally, we are grateful for the growing list of generous donors who have provided $18.8 million toward the construction of this new facility – many of whom we are honoring once again in this issue.

Angie and I hope you’ll make plans to come home again for Viking Days 2014, set for September 26-28. Along with an All-Class Reunion honoring the classes ending in 4 and 9, we’re also planning a special open house inside the Gilbert Science Center before construction officially begins. I’m especially hopeful you’ll join us for this special event so that together, we can look back one more time before we commence on the future of science at Augustana.

THE AUGUSTANA The Augustana is published three times per year for alumni, parents and friends of Augustana College by the Office of Advancement.

In 2010, the year of Augustana’s Sesquicentennial, the magazine was named The Augustana, in honor of the College’s first student newspaper, first published in 1908 in Canton, S.D. The Augustana, as it was then, contained essays, news items, humor pages and articles of general interest.

It aimed to “develop a healthy school spirit, be a true exponent of school life, and be an interesting medium between the school and its friends.” It remained the official publication of the College until 1918.

fter months of planning, architectural renderings for Augustana’s new Froiland Science Complex are now complete.

Designed by Smithgroup JJR and TSP, the $35 million project will begin with a 41,000-square-foot addition to the existing Gilbert Science Center (GSC) and will include a complete renovation of the current building. When it’s complete, College officials say the new, LEED-certified 125,000-square-foot facility will enable Augustana’s Natural Science Division faculty to incorporate modern pedagogies proven to equip students with enhanced critical thinking skills and handson experience.

“It’s hard to overstate what this project will mean,” said Dr. Paul Egland, associate professor, chief health professions advisor and chair of the Biology Department. “We’ve simply outgrown our current facility in about every way we can think of.”

Outgrown, indeed. Today biology is one of Augustana’s largest majors – up 22 percent over the last decade.

That same upward trend extends throughout the entire Natural Science Division.

For the 2013-14 academic year, Natural Science majors represented 36 percent of all majors at Augustana – up nearly 10 percent from a decade ago. College officials cite a number of reasons for the growth, including an increased demand for health care professionals, a growing interest in the natural sciences among high school students and Augustana’s reputation for delivering high job placement rates among its graduates.

Named in honor of Dr. Sven Froiland, longtime biology professor and a champion of scientific research at Augustana, the new facility will feature six new, technology-rich “classatories,” rooms featuring traditional classroom elements and laboratory components. These rooms will enable faculty to build “active learning” philosophies into their curriculum – a proven teaching method pairing traditional lecture with group work and hands-on exercises.

“We want our graduates to feel confident and competent,” said Dr. Karen Younger, professor of nursing and chair of the natural sciences division. “Take nursing, for example.

These new ‘classatories’ will help us create more complex instruction around the physical, relational and psycho-motor elements of nursing care. Our students truly will be able to ‘practice becoming’ nurses before they enter their first job.”

Dr. Eric Wells, associate professor and chair of the Physics Department, agrees.

“The idea of ‘practice becoming’ is a good way of saying it,” Wells said. “Among our physics majors, about 60 percent go on to graduate school and become scientists.

They’re going to do research in their graduate program so they need to practice being a scientist as an undergraduate student.”

Physics majors have skyrocketed in recent years, charting a 219-percent increase over the last decade. The growth, Wells says, is

due to marketplace demand, particularly for engineers.

Augustana offers a dual-degree physics-engineering program in which students spend three years studying on campus and two years at a partner school: Columbia University, Washington University or the University of Minnesota.

“It’s an awesome program – many of our students who pursue it have multiple job offers when they’re finished,” Wells said. “At the end of five years, students receive a bachelor’s degree from Augustana and a bachelor’s in science in engineering from the partner school. These graduates are really sought after in the job market because if you’ve got an engineer who can, say, design a bridge and tell the city council why the bridge looks that way, well, that’s a pretty nice person to have on your team.”

Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) is another department that has seen significant growth – its majors are up 181 percent over the last 10 years.

“Exercise science is really an emerging field that’s growing all over the country and it can take people in a lot of different directions,”

said Dr. Sherry Barkley, professor and chair of the HPER Department. “Our graduates go on to become physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers and other wellness professionals. They’re working in clinical settings, nursing homes, cardiac rehab units, with pregnant women, and with people with neurological issues.”

Currently located in the Elmen Center, the HPER Department will move to the Froiland Complex and will be housed near the new Nursing Department, a design configuration that will enable HPER students to share the Nursing Department’s new, high-fidelity health care simulation labs.

The new facility will also feature core research areas for faculty researchers and their student collaborators and glass-enclosed laboratories, designs College officials say will put “science on display” for all students and further enhance the culture of research that exists on the campus today.

Along with more research space, the Froiland Complex will include numerous open study areas for students near faculty offices.

Mark David Kranz, principal and design director for Smithgroup JJR, said the design of the study spaces will encourage the exchange of ideas and build community among students and their faculty mentors.

“These spaces will have tack-able surfaces, wipe boards, tables and chairs, and the technology students need to study and collaborate,” Kranz said. “And, they’ll be flooded with light.”

GSC’s largest existing classroom, the auditorium-style GSC 100, will be replaced with a larger space that can be divided into two, 100-seat classrooms featuring retractable seating. When it’s not divided, the room will be able to hold 300 people for research presentations, meetings and other gatherings.

Plans are also underway that will enable students to discover science outdoors,

through the use of region-specific plants, trees and grasses in the facility’s landscaping design around its perimeter and in its courtyard area.

To date, Augustana has received nearly $18.8 million in gifts and pledges in support of the Froiland Science Complex. College officials say construction will break ground once gifts and pledges reach $20 million.

“The Froiland Science Complex will absolutely position Augustana as a center for undergraduate scientific research and discovery,” said Rob Oliver, president. “We already have the best faculty teaching the brightest students. Now, we’ll have a facility that will support and enhance all the amazing teaching and learning that happens today.”

doctors, nurses, scientists, engineers, teachers and wellness professionals,” Oliver said.

“Just imagine how we’ll be able to impact tomorrow with this new facility.”

“We are incredibly grateful to all those who have made gifts or pledges in support of this project, the largest and most complex building endeavor in our 153-year history,” he said. “And we are excited beyond measure to break ground and begin construction.”

College officials say they hope to reach the fundraising milestone early this summer and break ground by late August. Ahead of construction, an open house and celebration of the Gilbert Science Center is being planned for Viking Days weekend, Sept. 26-28. More details on this event will be announced in June.

New Academic Collaboration With Sanford Health to Focus on Genetics In January, Sanford Health announced a $125 million gift from philanthropist T. Denny Sanford to establish Sanford Imagenetics, a first-of-its-kind program that will integrate genomic medicine into primary care for adults.

One component of Imagenetics includes initial partnerships with Augustana College and the University of South Dakota to develop new academic programs which will train the next generation of doctors, nurses and scientists in genomic medicine.

For Augustana, this means the potential to offer master’s degree programs specializing in genetic counseling and bioinformatics, and a certificate program in genomic nursing.

“Thanks to Mr. Sanford for his generosity, which I believe has the power to change the world by helping to develop skilled researchers and nurses dedicated to extending life, and serving those who are genetically predisposed to life-altering disease,” said President Rob Oliver. “We also thank Sanford Health for inviting Augustana to be part of this very exciting initiative.”

“Obviously, there is still much work to be done to move today’s announcement from concept to implementation. We do not have a firm date for when these new potential programs will begin at Augustana.

For now, we are in the exploratory stages,” he said.

College Reports 98% Job Placement for Second Year in a Row For the second consecutive year, Augustana is reporting that 98 percent of its most recent graduates (May 2013) seeking employment have accepted a position related to their major or chosen field.

The statistic comes from the Augustana Career Center’s annual report, which follows the vocational and educational destinations of recent graduates during the first eight months following graduation. Other statistics in the report include: • Among the 385 recent graduates who pursued positions in nursing, human services and education, 100 percent report they are now working in those fields.

president for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, said the new programs will feature the collaborative efforts of passionate faculty members, world-class facilities and student training programs, and ongoing public outreach.

“We are humbled beyond measure by the opportunity to collaborate with Sanford Health to further genomic research and discovery,” Hasseler said. “And we look forward to the work we will do, alongside students, to translate these discoveries into languages that will improve and enhance healthcare in our society.

Dr. Gene Hoyme ’72, chief academic officer and president of Sanford Research, spoke about the collaboration during the initial announcement and discussed it more in depth earlier this spring.

“I think that Augustana has a reputation of excellence in nursing and the biological sciences and for producing historically strong

graduates,” Hoyme said.

“From the standpoint of Sanford, Augustana provides us with a workforce of high-quality individuals in business, nursing and [soon] in genetics.”

“For students, this collaboration will mean a direct pathway to a career with Sanford for the foreseeable future.

If you’re willing to be a little flexible about where you live, there are huge opportunities for genetic counselors.”

“One of the things that excites me about Augustana as the place to place our master’s program in genetics counseling is the opportunity to build into the program a focus on bio-ethics.

Augustana will be the only church-related school with a program in genetics counseling.

There’s always been a focus on the ethics of behavior and decision making, and that will give a flavor to this program. That’s something that Augustana can give to the field of genetics that I don’t think a lot of other places can give.”

• Augustana’s job placement rate for business-related majors also increased to 98 percent, up from 97 percent last year.

• The average starting salary reported also increased to $41,112, up considerably from $37,572 last year.

• The majority of graduates (59 percent) found careers in South Dakota.

• A large percentage of graduates (21 percent) are enrolled in graduate and professional schools. Of those, 29 percent are in a medical-related program; 10 percent are pursing advanced study in the natural sciences, such as biology or chemistry; and 11 percent are pursuing programs in law or business.

“For today’s young people, higher education is not only about forming a foundation of knowledge and experience, it is also about the outcome – specifically, the ability to find a career in a field one is passionate about,” said Rob Oliver, president. “These numbers continue to illustrate that an Augustana education remains an outstanding investment.”

“It makes us very proud, indeed, when local, national and international employers tell us that Augustana graduates are highly desirable as employees because they can think critically, reason analytically and communicate effectively. Results like these continue to drive home the fact that Augustana graduates are well-suited to thrive in virtually any field, anywhere around the globe.”

I

f you’re old enough to remember November 22, 1963, odds are you remember the moment when time stopped and history took a new course following the news that President John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, Texas.

While most of the nation paced anxiously near radios, hung on the words of television newscasters and waited desperately for afternoon papers — hungry for information about how, why and by whom its young, charismatic leader had been gunned down, Dr. Rayburn Skoglund, Augustana class of 1959, was watching history unfold from inside the seams.

A University of Texas Medical School intern at the time, Skoglund was on shift in the labor and delivery ward at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas — the same hospital President Kennedy and Texas Governor John Connally were brought to following the shooting.

Now 77 and a retired pediatric neurologist, he has memories of that fateful day that are crystal clear.

“They came in and the IVs were ready. The chest tubes were ready.

O-negative blood was ready,” Skoglund recalled earlier this year, following the 50th anniversary of the assassination.

“Kennedy was brought into the ER and Connally was taken to Trauma and prepped for surgery. Vice President Johnson was surrounded in another area. Mrs. Kennedy was in the area, watching everything that was going on.”

After hospital staff declared President Kennedy dead, Skoglund said he and his colleagues were stunned and in shock.

That shock resurfaced days later when Lee Harvey Oswald, Kennedy’s accused assassin, was also brought to Parkland after being shot in the basement of the Dallas Police Station.

“It was just amazing the things that happened. They were televising when they were moving Oswald and we could see on TV when [Jack] Ruby shot Oswald. Then they brought Oswald into Parkland,” Skoglund remembered. “We didn’t know what was going on. For two to three weeks, the whole hospital was sort of numb.”

As Skoglund, a native of Sioux Falls and a biology major at Augustana, tells his story, he’s modest, soft-spoken and unassuming. He was, like so many of his generation would say, “just doing his job.”

Yet, it’s clear that his brush with history in Dallas was the first of many history-making milestones throughout his career.

Surgery at Sea After his residency, Skoglund entered the U.S. Navy and served as a full lieu-

tenant and general medical officer for the USS Union, an amphibious assault ship assigned to the West Pacific.

While at sea, Skoglund diagnosed nine USS Union sailors with appendicitis.

Eight were able to be transported from the ship to land for surgery.

One wasn’t. The seas were simply too dangerous that day.

“It was one of the scariest times of my life. I had no desire to do an appendectomy at sea if we didn’t need to, but the sea was too rough to get [the sailor] off,” he said.

Operating in less than ideal circumstances, Skoglund was forced to employ some unusual tactics to ensure the procedure was a success.

“Because we were using a spinal anesthetic, we had to make sure the ship rocked from side to side, rather than from bow to stern,” he said. “It worked pretty well.”

Later that year, Skoglund and his crew mates watched fighters bomb the beaches of Chu Lai, Vietnam, before the USS Union landed U.S. Marines on shore. Skoglund was among the officers who then helped build a 400-bed hospital on the beach.

A Career in Pediatrics After his service in the U.S. Navy, Skoglund and his wife, Ardell (Augustana class of 1961), moved to Oakland, Calif., where he joined the pediatric department at Navy Hospital.

There, he says he saw an evolution of medicine.

“Early in my career, I saw how the art of medicine was practiced,” he said.

“Now, I see how the art and science of medicine is practiced.”

Over his career, he says he saw significant medical advances due to drugs, such as chemotherapy, penicillin, antibiotics and antivirals, and technology.

“In the past, leukemia was almost a certain death sentence,” Skoglund said.

“With chemotherapy, it’s not anymore.

Antibiotics and antivirals have saved lives along with hearing and sight. New vaccines eliminated our most common causes of meningitis. And today blue babies, those born with complex congenital heart conditions, are living long lives — long enough to complain about their chest scars.”

Later, as a member of the staff at Navy Teaching Hospital in San Diego, Calif., Skoglund watched as the pediatric medicine discipline underwent monumental changes — perhaps most significant, he said, was the development of specializations in cardiology, neurology, allergy, and other areas.

“Medical information was simply getting to be too extensive for a general medical person to know everything about all of these areas,” he said.

Skoglund elected to specialize in child neurology and spent three years training in neurology at the University of California in San Francisco. Following his training, he returned to Navy Hospital in San Diego in 1974.

At that time, he said, the “dark ages” of pediatric neurology were beginning to fade.

“In the 1970s and before, anticonvulsants were the only medications available to treat children with chronic

seizures, which meant they were never able to attend school. When the new drug Tegretol became available, those children went to school within two weeks. Pharmacological advances were so significant,” he said.

“At the same time, social and legal attitudes were changing — children with conditions were accepted into society as disabled people and were granted equal rights. Mothers and fathers were relieved of this sense of ‘shame’ and were able to care for their children in a more open way.”

Skoglund recalled what it was like to diagnose a child with autism in the 1970s — decades before today’s understanding and treatment of the condition.

“You would diagnose a child with autism and the mother and father immediately felt guilty — like it was something they did to make this happen. That whole kind of process changed. We were able to tell parents, ‘This is not your fault.’ ‘We need to stomp on those feelings and get on with how to care for your child.’ Those kinds of changes occurred.”

During his career, he said he also saw pediatric neurology undergo what he called “miraculous changes” thanks to technology.

“I thought the CAT scan was one of the most amazing things I’d ever seen.

Before that technology was available, in order to know if a child had a brain tumor, we had to do a pneumoencephalogram. That meant we had to take the child down to radiology, strap them down, and inject air into their spinal fluid. These children would be very sick in the hospital for two weeks just from the procedures. It was a very dangerous and painful process you had to go through and you would only pursue those procedures if you were highly suspicious. Today, you can order a CAT scan or MRI much earlier and, as a re-

sult, make a diagnosis much earlier.”

In 1985, Skoglund retired from Navy Hospital and joined Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Following some personal health issues, he began to phase out of medicine in 2007 and retired completely in 2009.

Today, he and his wife still reside in San Diego and spend time traveling.

They revisited Chu Lai in 2012 and last year, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s death, he visited the Texas School Book Depository (now a museum) in Dallas.

Despite being retired from medicine, he still follows the field closely and marvels at the advances he’s seen in just the last decade.

“I wish I could be around in 100

years because I really believe a visit to the doctor for schizophrenia, autism or a number of other conditions could go something like this: ‘Take one of these pills every three days and we’ll see you back in three months. Call me if you’re not better.’”

Because of his experience and perspective, Skoglund is also cautious, explaining that technology and pharmaceuticals cannot advance ahead of medicine’s true art, what he calls “bedside medicine.”

“Technology is so significant to what medicine is today,” Skoglund said. “We just need to be sure we’re also developing new techniques for the art of medicine to continue as well.”

NEWS FROM THE HUDDLE

Augustana Writer-in-Residence Publishes Novel “The Commandant of Lubizec,” a novel by Augustana Writer-in-Residence and Chair of the English and Journalism department Dr. Patrick Hicks, was published last month by Steerforth/ Random House.

Set in the early 1940s, the novel is based on the Operation Reinhard death camps in Poland during World War II. To research the book, Hicks read extensively on the Holocaust and traveled to Warsaw and Krakow, Poland, to discover the kind of details that he says “make fiction real.”

“I knew what I was going to look for. It’s important as a fiction writer to actually go to these places where history took place,” he said. “It’s one thing to study the Holocaust from a safe academic distance.

It’s another thing to stand where these crimes took place. It becomes more real for you. It does something to you to be in these places and that just naturally affects you as an artist.”

Hicks said the experience of writing “Lubizec,” a fictitious Nazi death camp created as an aggregate of Operation Reinhard’s three camps, Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka, was an emotional one.

“I don’t think people really understand what happened in those three camps as well as they should,” he said. “I’ve taken the stories from these three real places to tell the story of Operation Reinhard. Sometimes I think people haven’t approached these camps because they are so

Former Augustana President Lloyd Svendsbye Dies at 83 Former Augustana president Dr. Lloyd Svendsbye died on Sunday, March 2, in Edina, Minn. He was 83.

Svendsbye served the College as its 19th president from 1987-1992.

A native of North Dakota, Svendsbye held degrees from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., and Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He was ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1955 and also earned his doctorate of divinity from Columbia University. Prior to joining Augustana in 1987, he served as president of Luther Northwestern Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., and vice president and Dean of Students at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

“I think fiction can offer a type of filter because you can read it and say, ‘well, at least this wasn’t a real prisoner.’ In the back of your mind though, you know it happened. There’s a kind of psychological buffer there. It was hard to write but, when I think about the stories you could focus on, really, there is no other story more important than the Holocaust,” he said.

Hicks is the author of five poetry collections, most recently “Finding the Gossamer” and “This London.” He is also the editor of “A Harvest of Words,” published by the Center for Western Studies and partially funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

He has been nominated seven times for the

Pushcart Prize, and was a finalist for the High Plains Book Award, the Dzanc Books Short Story Collection Competition, and the Gival Press Novel Award. He has won the Glimmer Train Fiction Award and he is the recipient of a number of grants, including individual artist awards from the Bush Foundation and the South Dakota Arts Council.

“The Commandant of Lubizec” is Hicks’s first novel. In addition to this publication, his next poetry collection, “Adoptable,” will be published

by Salmon Poetry later in 2014.

In early 2015, his short story collection, “The Collector of Names,” will be published by Schaffner Press.

“President Svendsbye led and served Augustana with integrity and wisdom during his time in office and continued to support the College through his tireless volunteerism and generous financial gifts,” said President Rob Oliver.

“We are grateful for the many ways he has impacted Augustana and we send our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends who are mourning his loss.”

Following his retirement, he continued to work as an author and genealogical scholar, chronicling his ancestors’ journeys from Norway to Western North Dakota in his book, “I Paid All My Debts.” For the past decade, he also served as a member of the Center for Western Studies’ National Advisory Council.

His wife, Anne, passed away in 2011.

Funeral services were held March 13-14 in Edina, Minn.

As chief academic officer for Sanford Health and president of Sanford Research, Dr. Gene Hoyme ’72 is using genetics to enhance primary care and save lives.

T

he paint inside Augustana’s Gilbert Science Center had barely dried when Gene Hoyme arrived on campus as a freshman in 1968.

For the teenager from the small town of Dell Rapids, S.D., the chance to study in a new facility that was, at the time, praised by newspapers and journals throughout the region for its advanced design and modern scientific equipment was exciting.

So was the chance to learn from and work with its core of innovative faculty members, people like Dr. Sven Froiland (biology), Dr. Arlen Viste (chemistry) and Dr. Lansing Prescott (biology) – rock star

professors whose passion for scientific research helped set the culture for exploration and discovery still alive in the College’s Natural Science division today.

Hoyme, the son of a WWII veteran, had always been interested in science and in high school he’d worked as an orderly at the Dell Rapids hospital, shadowing the three doctors on its staff. By the time he got to Augustana, he wasn’t sure whether to pursue a path in scientific research or medicine, but he had high hopes for a fulfilling career in either field.

Little did the soft-spoken kid know then that one day he would go on to become one of the nation’s leading pediatric geneticists.

This is where Gene Hoyme’s story begins.

Early Influences Hoyme’s father never got the chance to go to college. With the war building overseas, he got drafted soon out of high school and, after scoring well on the U.S. Army’s aptitude test, he was sent to the Army Radio School in Kansas City where he learned about radar. During the war, his chief duty was to repair electronic equipment.

After the war, he returned home, got married, took the Civil Service exam and qualified to be a U.S. mail carrier.

Even though he didn’t get the chance to attend college, he wanted to make sure his five children did.

“With my dad, there was no question that we were going to college. He didn’t go … but we were going to go,” Hoyme remembered.

And go, they did. All five attended Augustana.

At Augustana, Hoyme double majored in chemistry and biology. He counts Dr. Arlen Viste, his advisor, among his earliest mentors.

“Dr. Viste had a huge influence on me

Following the advice of Viste, after graduation Hoyme applied and was accepted into the University of Chicago’s School of Medicine.

West, East, West and Midwest After choosing pediatrics as his specialty, Hoyme went on to complete his residency at the University of California in San Diego.

While there, he had the opportunity to study genetics while working under one of the institution’s top geneticists.

He says he found the discipline intriguing.

“Historically, genetics has been the diagnosing and caring for of people with rare disorders. I was attracted to it because of the intellectual variety and the incredible depth of what you can see in patients,” he said.

Later, he was offered the chance to complete a post-doctoral fellowship in genetics.

After completing his fellowship, Hoyme would go on to serve at the University of Vermont as a practicing physician and assistant professor, and later at the Univer-

Now, with the ability to sequence the human genome, we are able to provide what I would call ‘precision medicine’– using your genetic make-up to more carefully care for you as an individual.”

“What genetics does will allow physicians to be much more precise in the way they treat you. Today, if a doctor makes a diagnosis, he or she will treat you based on what works in the vast majority of people,” he said.

“So, let’s say they diagnose you with having pneumonia. The drug the doctor is going to treat you with is based on studies that have shown that this drug is effective in treating 80 percent of people with pneumonia. But what if you’re in the 20 percent? This drug won’t be effective in you and today your doctor really has no way of knowing that.”

I think I took every single course Arlen taught – I really liked him. He really cared. If you were gone from class, Arlen might call you on the phone to find out what was wrong. “ As a student, Hoyme conducted biochemistry research with Dr. Lansing Prescott; learned about genetics from Dr. Sven Froiland; and took as many classes as he could in English and history.

“Augie was very formative for me – all the faculty members were very influential for me. [Studying the liberal arts] also gave me a foundation, and it certainly taught me how to write. A liberal arts education can teach you to be a good scientific writer as well. I took probably as many history and English courses as I did science courses at Augustana.”

“When you write a scientific paper, it has to be economical in what you say. You don’t put anything down that you don’t

After 12 years in Arizona, he joined Stanford University where he spent a decade serving as director of the Stanford/ University of California Medical Genetics Residency Program, and later as professor of pediatrics and chief of Medical Genetics at the University’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.

In 2007, he returned to South Dakota to serve as chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota, overseeing the establishment of the pediatric residency program and the opening of the Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Because of his work, today he is a nationally recognized and award-winning authority on clinical genetics and fetal alcohol syndrome.

He currently serves as chief academic officer for Sanford Health and president of Sanford Research.

in the future, before a doctor prescribes a drug for you, is to review your electronic medical record to see, based on your genetic information, whether the drug is or isn’t going to be effective in you. If the drug won’t help you, the doctor could suggest another drug.”

Precision medicine, Hoyme says, will soon become a reality.

Earlier this year, Sanford Health announced a $125 million gift from philanthropist T. Denny Sanford to establish Sanford Imagenetics, a first-of-its-kind program that will integrate genomic medicine into primary care for adults.

While the possibility of integrating genetics into primary care is indeed exciting, Hoyme is quick to point out that genetics is never completely the answer.

“Genetics is one of the important things in medical care,” he said. “But it will continue to be important to do a good history, to do a good physical exam and to observe the patient. But, genetics should

help you get better faster because the physician can choose the right treatment for you. And, you’ll have fewer side effects.”

“The most important part in genetics is to sit down with a patient, to take a good history, visit with them about their family, and talk about their illness – to ask them about their symptoms and signs. Then, we need to do a careful physical. Those things show us what to test for,” he said.

A good example, Hoyme said, is cancer.

“When we treat cancer – sometimes it’s like using a sledgehammer to hit a mosquito. Not that cancer is a minor illness, but the drugs we use for cancer make people sick. Sometimes the drugs kill you – they suppress your immune system, you get sick and you succumb to your illness.”

“But what genetics may help with is this: There are a lot of cancer treatments that don’t have all these side effects. Depending on the genetics of the tumor, you may be able to be treated with something that doesn’t have so many side effects, allowing you to get better quicker.”

Using genetics within primary care, Hoyme said, will also increase the need for more geneticists and genetic counselors – scientists who can effectively communicate the scientific findings to patients and

their physicians.

In explaining this, he reflected on times during his career when he’s had to relay complex genetic information to patients and their families.

“It’s important to not take away people’s hope. We didn’t go into medicine to lay black crepe and make people feel bad.

We’re there to give them hope, rather than take their hope away. Sometimes things in genetics can look bad, but they’re not as bad as they look.”

An example, he said, is pre-emptive genomic analysis.

“So, instead of ordering a genetic test when you show symptoms of something, let’s say when you’re 21 you go to the doctor for a visit and you get your genome sequenced before you’re sick. The doctor will then look at the genome when you’re young and healthy and could see something that says ‘you have this gene which conveys a 20-fold risk for colon cancer.’”

“So instead of the usual kind of treatment – getting a colonoscopy when you’re 50 or older – if you knew you had a genetic risk for colon cancer, you’d be referred to a specialist and your medical team could likely prevent cancer in you.”

lege and the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine to develop new academic programs which will train the next generation of doctors, nurses and scientists in genomic medicine. [see “Academic Collaboration” on page 9.]

For Hoyme, Imagenetics – and the potential it has to impact health care – represents much of his life’s work.

“It’s a good way for me to end my career.

I feel that if I’m successful in this genomics initiative, I’ll be able to retire saying that I got done what I wanted to get done.”

“The reality is that genetics has evolved into an important daily tool that will help every physician care for their patients as one of the many tools that physicians use. In my mind, it’s probably one of the most important steps in medicine that has occurred since antibiotics.”

Hoyme will be the featured speaker at Augustana’s 2014 Commencement, set for Saturday, May 24, at the Elmen Center. In recognition of his efforts to advance health care, he will receive the Spirit of Augustana Award for Research and Innovation during the ceremony.

Great Professors; Great Accomplishments Promotions to Associate Professor and tenure were granted to the following faculty members at the December Board of Trustees meeting: Dr. Elizabeth Babcock (Psychology). Babcock received her doctoral degree from Michigan State University. She is interested in how cognitive abilities (memory, attention and learning) are affected by real-world task demands, and how normal cognitive aging changes memory and attention abilities. In particular, she has investigated the effects of Internet ads on attention, and how people can improve their abilities to learn names. Her courses include Cognitive Psychology, Research Methods, and Human Lifespan Development.

Dr. Sherry Barkley (HPER). Barkley joined faculty on a part-time basis in 1995 while she continued to work as a clinical exercise physiologist in a local hospital. She accepted a full-time appointment and became chair of the department in 2005. Dr. Barkley coordinates internships for exercise science and fitness management students and is the director of Augustana’s Master of Arts in sports administration and leadership. Dr. Barkley received her B.S. in physical education and mathematics with a minor in athletic training from SDSU and her M.S. in exercise science from the University of Arizona. She earned her Ph.D. in Biological Science with an emphasis in nutrition from SDSU. Dr. Martha Gregg (Mathematics). Gregg teaches a wide variety of mathematics courses. Her research interests are in the area of functional analysis; specifically she studies a class of completely positive maps on C*-algebras.

She received her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Dr. Olivia Lima (Psychology). Lima received her doctoral degree from the University of Virginia. Her broad area of interest is teaching and learning, as informed by the perspectives of cognitive, developmental, and educational psychology.

Her current research focuses on preschoolers’ word learning in the school setting, and her classes include Lifespan Development, Child Psychology, and Statistics Dr. Rocki Wentzel (Religion/Philosophy/Classics). Wentzel teaches ancient Greek, Latin, and classics courses, such as mythology and drama, that utilize texts in translation. She taught for a year at Ohio State University, where she also earned her Ph.D. Her dissertation was on the reception of Virgil’s Aeneid in Augustine’s Confessions.

Her areas of interest include gift theory, desire, and gender.

Dr. Mike Mullin (History) was appointed to a three-year term with the Siouxland Heritage Museums Trustees Board (Jan. 2014 to Jan. 2017). Dr. Mullin also presented a paper entitled “Talking Story: The Competing Stories of Senator R.F. Pettigrew’s Opposition to Hawaiian Annexation” at the Hawaii University International Conferences in the Arts and Humanities in January in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dr. Mike Wanous (Academic Affairs) was elected to a three-year term on the American Conference of Academic Deans (ACAD) Board of Directors. ACAD is dedicated to advancing the ideals of liberal education and supporting deans in its work as academic leaders.

Dr. Landon Karr (Anthropology) had an article titled “Human Use and Reuse of Megafaunal Bones in North America: Bone Fracture, Taphonomy, and Archaeological Interpretation” accepted for publication in the journal Quaternary International.

Dr. Klungseth’s presentation was titled, “Activities for Active Academics.” Dr. Klungseth was also honored in February as the “Friend of the Watchdog” at the 15th annual Beresford Frostbite Four Road Race. The recognition is given to an individual that has demonstrated an extreme dedication to the Community of Beresford and the Beresford School District.

Dr. Christopher Stanichar’s (Music) original composition, “The Raven” was performed at the University of Nebraska by the ensemble, I The Siren, on October 31 in the Petite Musique Concert Series.

Distinguished Concerts International New York City (DCINY) has announced that 34 student members of Angelus (Augustana’s women’s choir) and the Collegiate Chorale will participate in a performance of Robert Harris’ “Gloria” as part of the DCINY Concert Series in Lincoln Center’s Alice Kelly Hall on Saturday, May 10, in New York City. “Augustana received this invitation because of the high quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers and the exceptional recommendation given by Dr. Robert Harris [conductor of Distinguished Concert Singers International],” said Dr. Jonathan Griffith, artistic director and principal conductor for DCINY. “These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community. This is an event of extreme pride for everybody and is deserving of the community’s recognition and support.” Augustana student singers will join with other choristers from around the country to form the Distinguished Concerts Singers International. They will spend five days and four nights in New York City in preparation for the concert. After a 28-year-run as head of the Augustana Athletics department, Bill Gross ‘73 announced his decision to step down from the athletic director post in December. This spring, he’ll begin a new role as a senior development officer and director of major gifts for the College’s Advancement office.

The 6’ 8” tall native of Hayfield, Minn., will leave behind an unprecedented legacy of success within Augustana Athletics and, it goes without saying, very large (literally) shoes to fill.

Under his watch, the Vikings have emerged as a formidable powerhouse within NCAA Division II athletics. Since joining the 16-team Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the Vikings have finished no lower than second in the U.S. Bank All Sports Award. At the national level, Augustana has recorded top-10 finishes among 300 NCAA Division II institutions in the Learfield Director’s Cup every year for the last three years, and finished sixth in 2012-2013.

In the last four years alone, three of Augustana’s teams had history-making seasons: football in 2010-11, women’s cross country in 2011 and women’s basketball in 2013.

Beyond his efforts to build strong coaching staffs who can develop and foster student-athletes, Gross has also worked tirelessly to increase the Athletics department’s financial base. Over the last seven years, Athletics department revenue, including ticket sales, event proceeds and fundraising, has more than doubled. Over the same period, the College has seen more than $17.6 million in athletic facility improvements, including Kirkeby-Over Stadium and the Hall Football Complex and Sanford Gymnasium.

Today, 420 students – 26.5 percent of the student body – wear the navy and gold in athletic competition.

Ahead of his move across campus to the Administration building, we caught up with Gross to ask him about his career in Augustana Athletics.

Q. As a kid, how did you become interested in athletics?

A. I grew up on a small farm – about 160 acres. It was a pretty typical small farm life – we had cows, pigs, chickens and farmland. My parents ran the farm and looked after the five kids.

I got the love of sports from my older brothers. We were all tall – my dad was tall, too. My oldest brother, John, got things going by playing basketball, football and baseball. From him, we fell in love with sports.

My mom and dad – even though they both had eighth grade educations – were proponents of education all the way. They wanted their kids to go on to college. Not that any of us couldn’t have farmed; I think they just didn’t envision that for us. I remember my mom saying, ‘Get your education first – then you’ll always have something to fall back on.’ They were a great influence on me.

I was recruited to Augie as a basketball player in 1969. I knew of the school because my older brother (Don, class of 1969, now deceased) had come to Augustana and really loved it here. He was a big influence.

I really was impressed with Augustana – its academic reputation, the level of competition, which in those days was the North Central Conference, and the city of Sioux Falls. When those things were put together, I really thought it was a perfect fit for me. And, it turned out to be.

Q. What memories stand out from your time as a student?

A. From the academic standpoint here, I was influenced heavily and motivated by my advisor Dwayne Matz (History). He was a great professor. I loved American History and I really admired him. I never wanted anything other than an A from him. He was probably my greatest academic influence.

From a playing standpoint, my influences were Mel Klein and John Thomas. They became the coaches here in 1971, during my junior year.

Mel and John were able to improve the program to the point where, when I was a senior, we were quite good and in the conference chase.

Sam Milanovich ‘73 (now deceased) was my best friend – we had great times together. We were opposites. He was from a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pa. – a big city kid – and I was a farm kid. But, we seemed to hit it off well. He was a great friend.

Q. As a student, what did you envision as a career for yourself?

A. Growing up, I didn’t know what I wanted to be. When I was in high school, I kind of thought I wanted to be a radio or TV guy. That all went away when I got to college. I became a history major and got my teaching certificate.

After graduation in 1973, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. John Thomas helped me find a tour team in Europe.

From there, I went to a regular team in France and spent eight months there.

During that time, I figured out I really wanted to coach.

I came back and coached in high school for awhile, then was an assistant [at Augustana] with Mel in 1979.

I never thought that much about coaching until I was just out of college.

Then I ended up coaching but I never thought I’d be an athletic director – that was the farthest thing from my mind.

Q. How did you end up in the AD role?

A. Well, I never sought the AD job here. I was the basketball coach in the 1980s and Virg Sandvig was the athletic director and was also a professor of geography.

In 1986, Virg wanted to step away so [then] President [Bill] Nelson asked me if I would be interested in taking on the AD job in addition to being the basketball coach.

I said no. There just weren’t enough hours in the day. We had two little kids and another one on the way.

But, he kept asking. So, I told him I

would try it for a year.

There was so much going on here. In that year, the Elmen Center was in the planning stages. So you start to get into the middle of that, then it’s a year later and you think, ‘I should probably see that through.’ Then it’s two years later and pretty soon, it’s sort of like, ‘That’s your job.’

Q. You served as AD and head men’s basketball coach for six years. Was that tough?

A. [He laughs.] They were six very long years. It was really difficult. In that era though, we didn’t have the number of student athletes we have now, nor the number of sports, nor the fundraising mechanisms we have now. It was still busy – but a different kind of busy.

In 1992, I went to [then] President [Lloyd] Svendsbye and said ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ I said ‘I have to go one way or the other.’

I really wasn’t ready to quit coaching.

But, I thought I could always go back to coaching. At the same time, I knew I might not always have the chance to go back to being an athletic director. So I chose athletic director.

There’s never been a dull moment.

It changes all the time. There’s always excitement. There’s always challenge.

There are always problems to solve.

There are some rewards, too – of seeing something you had a part in succeed.

Q. As AD, what’s been your management style?

A. I’ve always been a team guy – nothing happens with one person. You need a team of people pulling together – whether that’s in a sport, or raising money for a project – whatever it is, no one does it by themselves.

As an athletic director, I think your job is to help organize, to help create,

and to help motivate. You need to help plan and help develop the vision. I think you always need to be looking ahead. If you’re staying where you are, you’re going to get passed up. You have to keep looking ahead and dreaming of what could be. There will be people who will tell you you’re crazy. But if you don’t have a vision, things will never happen. You have to dream.

Q. Favorite memories as an AD? A. Above it all, to me, it’s been about the relationships. I look over the last 28 years of doing this and I see the fantastic coaches we’ve had, the administrators, the people around campus and, at the top of the list, the student-athletes.

Holy cow! They’re the greatest thing about it. It’s such a joy to run into these people now. They’re so successful and they’re doing so well. To think that maybe I had some little part in that – that’s just the most rewarding thing in the world.

And, through it all, my family has been the most important thing to me.

My wife, Sheree, is really special to me. When you’re a coach’s wife, your partner is going to end up living that life with you. They share in your joys and share in your sorrows. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. We’re blessed with three kids and four grandkids.

Q. What are you looking forward to in your new role in Advancement?

A. The Augustana story is so good – whether it’s in academics or the arts or athletics or whatever – we have so many great stories to tell. We have such excellence in so many things that, when I visit with folks to share these stories, I’m hopeful they’ll consider investing in Augustana.

I’m really looking forward to this next chapter.

Basketball Doubleheaders to be Played at Sioux Falls Arena in 2014-15 Augustana and the Sioux Falls Arena and Convention Center have entered into a five-year agreement to move Augustana men’s and women’s basketball doubleheaders to the Sioux Falls Arena starting in 2014-15. Augustana last played basketball at the Arena during the 2006-07 season.

The Sioux Falls Arena was the permanent home of Augustana basketball from 1961-1989.

Augustana athletics has been looking for a way to improve the atmosphere for home basketball games for some time.

“As the Elmen Center reached its 25th anniversary, it became apparent to our administration that we either had to make improvements to the facility or look at other options,” Director of Athletics Bill 22

Gross said. “The current state of the Hall Sports Forum, with bleacher seating and challenging parking, was no longer attractive to new fans to help us grow our current fan base of 1,750 season ticket holders. As we looked into upgrading the Forum to include chairback seats, suites and videoboards, we found it was impossible to make the Forum in the Elmen Center the space we need to help our fan base grow.”

The Sioux Falls Arena will be transformed into the new home of Augustana basketball. The venue will be painted in Augustana blue and gold, including the playing surface. The transformed Arena will offer fans many amenities not available at the Elmen Center, including: The AUGUSTANA

• More than 3,500 chairback seats on the lower and upper levels.

• Two 3-year-old videoboards to enhance the fan experience.

• A new state-of-the-art digital scorers table.

• More than 4,400 parking spaces in the Arena/ Convention Center and Event Center lots.

• Club seating with more than 100 preferred seats.

Other features will include a re-painted playing surface and lobby area with Augustana colors and logos. A 16-foot high curtain will be installed behind row 12 of the second level to provide a more intimate feel. The capacity for Augustana basketball at the Sioux Falls Arena will be 4,066.

Planned Giving: 101 Jon Sogn ’83 has great love for Augustana.

He and his wife, Kristy (Kastrup) Sogn ’84, have sent two of their three children to Augustana.

They’ve been donors to Augustana scholarships, athletics, annual funds and building projects for 27 years. They also have made plans for their loved ones – and their beloved alma mater – in their wills.

Sogn, an attorney with the law firm of Lynn, Jackson, Shultz & Lebrun, P.C., in Sioux Falls, says you don’t have to reach a certain net worth or assemble a team of professionals to start thinking about planned giving. He recently shared his advice for others thinking about their estate plans.

Q: What is planned giving?

A: Planned giving can be thought of as the process of taking steps now to provide for a charitable gift in the future. The most common type of planned giving is a bequest of money or property through a will, but there are other avenues of planned giving, such as charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts, and life insurance.

Q: What types of property can be part of planned giving?

A: Cash is always a popular option, but there can be tax advantages to giving stocks, real estate, or other assets.

Q: When should you think about planned giving?

A: There is an old proverb about how the best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago, and the second best time is today. It is never too early to start thinking about planned giving, regardless of age, family situation, or net worth. I don’t know many people who can predict financial futures with 100 percent accuracy, and of course we want to be sure we leave sufficient assets to our loved ones, but there are many ways a person can provide for

his or her family and still include planned giving as part of an estate plan. For example, a person can name Augustana in his or her will, but make the gift to Augie conditional on the net value of the estate being more than a certain amount.

It is also important to periodically review your estate plan, including the planned giving, as circumstances and needs change over the years. As they say, change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Q: Where do you start?

A: I know this sounds silly, but the best place to start is to start.

Sometimes that may mean a team consisting of a financial planner, an attorney, an accountant, an insurance agent, and a representative from a charitable organization. But you don’t have to wait until you have a full team assembled before you can start planning. Any one of these individuals can help you get the process started. Q: Why include Augustana in your estate plans?

A: One of my mentors at Augustana was Doris Huseboe. Doris enjoyed reminding students of the faithful servant parable from Luke Chapter 12, and its teaching that “For of those to whom much is given, much is required.” Remembering Augustana in estate planning is one way each of us can celebrate the many blessings we enjoy and make a difference in the lives of our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Juniors Aimée Fisher and Eric Herst Named 2014 Peace Scholars Juniors Aimée Fisher (Montgomery, Minn.) and Eric Herst (Weldon Spring, Mo.) have been named the 2014 Augustana Peace Scholars.

As Peace Scholars, Fisher and Herst will receive a seven-week academic experience in Norway designed to deepen their understanding of the central issues and theories related to peace, justice, democracy and human rights. The two will study at the Nansen Dialogue Network in Lillehammer and at the University of Oslo International Summer School June 15 - Aug. 1.

Junior Ellen Ferry (Underwood, Minn.) was named as the College’s alternate.

She will serve as Augustana’s Peace Scholar if either Fisher or Herst are unable to participate.

Fisher, an Art and Education double major, is a member of the Civitas Honors Program, serves as director of communications for the Augustana Student Association, works as a Student Ambassador, and chairs committees for PRSSA and the Augustana Union Board of Governors. She also volunteers at the Bowden Youth Center and participates in the Augustana FRIENDSlink program, providing friendship and support to people with disabilities. She studied abroad in India in January 2013 and plans to pursue a career in K-12 art education.

“Aimée is developing a global perspective which will empower her to have an impact at Augustana, the local level and beyond. She greatly influences those around her and has the ability to transform the dynamics of a group because she has such a contagious joy for life and the intellectual prowess to develop successful endeavors,” a recommendation letter said of Fisher.

Herst, a Government and International Affairs major, is currently studying abroad in Belgium. He has been an active member of the Augustana Democrats, the Augustana Committee of Undergraduate Political Scientists (COUPS), and has spent time tutoring refugees in preparation for the U.S. citizenship exam.

He has extensive international experience, having studied abroad in India, Cuba and England. He plans to pursue a career in international law. “[He will] be a particularly good ambassador for a program that seeks to foster international respect and cooperation among peoples and nation-states,” a recommendation letter said of Herst.

Fisher and Herst were introduced at the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Forum in March at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn. His Holiness the Dalai Lama spoke on the theme “Crossing Boundaries to Create Common Ground.”

During the announcement of the 2014 Peace scholars, Augustana president Rob Oliver recognized each of the five Peace Scholar finalists, who, in addition to the three students listed above, also include:

Christian Einertson (class of 2016 and a native of Marietta, Ga.) and Erin Williams (class of 2015 and a native of Watertown, S.D.).

The Peace Scholars program is sponsored by a consortium of six colleges founded by Norwegian-American immigrants: Augustana College, Augsburg College, Concordia College (Moorhead), Luther College, Pacific Lutheran University and St. Olaf College. Two students from each of the participating colleges are selected as Peace Scholars each year.

As Peace Scholars, Fisher and Herst will embark on coursework that will include the causes of armed conflicts, peace building, peacemaking, humanitarian interventions and aid, peacekeeping operations, gender, civil society and nonviolence and peace movements. In conjunction with their studies, Peace Prize Scholars will also begin work on projects they will present on their home campuses.

The scholars will also visit a number of influential institutions including The International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO), Nobel Institute, Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights and the Nobel Peace Center.

Upon returning to their respective campuses, the 10 scholars will continue to communicate and find ways to build on their Oslo experiences together. They will also be expected to play leadership roles in peace activities on their campuses, and assist with next year’s Nobel Peace Prize Forum.

Center for Western Studies Advances with Donor Support Guided by its Constitution to improve the quality of social and cultural life in the Northern Plains, achieve a better understanding of the region, its heritage, and its resources, and stimulate interest in solving regional problems, the Center for Western Studies has embarked on a journey of transformative initiatives as detailed in its strategic plan, affirmed by the CWS Board of Directors in 2012.

Chief among these is securing the financial integrity of the Center, which has been accomplished through a six-year endowment campaign that raised $1.7 million, including a $300,000 challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Executive Director Dr. Harry Thompson emphasizes that these achievements are only possible because of the generosity of people who believe in the Center’s unique mission to both Augustana and the Northern Plains.

Donors of major gifts to the endowment are Loren and Mavis Amundson, L.M. Baylor, Thomas and Ann Garry, Anne King, Shirley King Estate, Karl Lee, Hazel Lyon, John McIntyre, Ronald R. Nelson Estate, Larry and Diane Ness, Lynwood Oyos, Rebecca Porter, Jerry and Gail Simmons, Darwin and Jane Sletten, and Ada Yeager.

The campaign boosted CWS endowments by 30 percent to $8 million. Other gifts, memberships, grants, and revenue provide additional annual support of $200,000.

The initiative to design and build new exhibits in three of the museum galleries has entered the development stage, with an expected completion date in 2015.

Naming gifts in support of the exhibit expansion, with a goal of $200,000, have been received from L.M. Baylor, Verna Berg Estate, Gordon (’57-59) and Joan (’59) Nelson Family, Larry and Diane Ness, Lynwood Oyos, and Darwin and Jane Sletten.

Other CWS initiatives include an art collecting policy that will guide the growth of the fine art collection, a collection digitization project that will increase access to the archives and museum collection, a program emphasis on Native American culture, a faculty research award, and a preservation action plan, including disaster preparedness.

Grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the NEH Preservation Assistance Program aided in funding the collections’ initiatives.

Meet Damien Fair, a 1998 Augustana alumnus who studies the developing brain.

A biology major at Augustana, Fair, now 38, was recently honored with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their careers.

We caught up with Fair, a native of Winona, Minn., now at Oregon Health and Science University, to learn more about his career and his memories of Augustana.

Q. How did you choose Augustana?

A. I ended up at Augie for two reasons: basketball and academics. I played basketball in high school and was being recruited at various schools in the Midwest.

Augustana provided me with a full scholarship to play basketball in a strong conference (at the time it was the NCC whose make up was quite a bit different than it is today) but also provided an institution that excelled at academics. While I had the opportunity to attend other institutions, this

that I had already taken much of the material in an advanced course in high school.

So after our first quiz/exam, on which I did quite well, he called me to his office to ask me how I did it. From there on, we had a bond and he kept very close tabs on me. College is a place where there are lots of distractions and having somebody make sure you don’t get too distracted is quite important. Dr. Earl was one of very few professors/mentors that I’ve had over the years who could see right through me, he made sure I stayed focused and reached for high goals. He used to tell us ‘confidence and competence’ are the two words that one needs to accomplish your goals. He was right, and even today I use this experience and his example to mentor students. His guidance really kept me on track academically throughout my time at Augie, and my appreciation for that guidance cannot be overstated.

Q. Tell us about your career.

A. I am an assistant professor at Oregon Health and Science University. I run my

A. I would say my greatest professional accomplishment besides simply finishing a long road of scientific training (which in many ways is still continuing), would be the Presidential Early-Career Award for Scientists and Engineers that I recently received from President Barack Obama at the White House. While I think that my scientific accomplishments are certainly in the early stages and our outreach work is still growing, it was gratifying to get the award. It represents the culmination of several mentors and institutions, such as Augustana, that have guided my training, a large and talented staff who conduct much of the work, and the families and community partners who feel it important to participate in our research.

The other accomplishment that is still growing, but for which I am quite proud of thus far is the lab’s Youth Engaged in Science program (YES!). The program was created to address educational and health disparities in underrepresented communi-

Q. What’s your best memory from your time on campus?

A. This is a great question, as I have so many fond memories of my time at Augie.

It is difficult for me to pinpoint one specific “best” memory. I had generated so many memories and my time there has gifted me with several lifelong bonds that narrowing it down to one is nearly impossible.

I certainly miss the jokes/pranks and the time with my teammates during the grind of our season and training. I also am quite appreciative of my Sioux Falls family and friends who often put food in my mouth and a place to sleep when I was a struggling student.

Q. Favorite professor and why?

A. My favorite professor without question was Dr. Gary Earl.

This might be surprising because he was my organic chemistry professor – a class/ topic that is typically not very high on the student wish list. While our relationship perhaps started off kind of “rocky,” it really blossomed into an invaluable mentor/mentee relationship that I value quite highly even today.

When I began in his course, I didn’t really present myself in a manor that screamed success – slouched in my chair, hat backwards, baggy shorts, etc. I also didn’t take many notes, which Dr. Earl noticed, and worried that I would not do well in his class. Well, little did he know

own neuroscience laboratory, which now has about 16 people in it whose expertise varies widely. I have students and postdoctoral fellows who I mentor and who are continuing their neuroscience training. I have biomedical engineers and computer scientists who develop software and run experiments for the laboratory. I have clinicians who do diagnostic visits on the patients and families we see, and I have coordinators who do a lot of the administrative and organizational work of the studies.

My laboratory focuses on mechanisms and principles that underlie the developing brain. The majority of this work uses functional MRI and resting state functional connectivity MRI to assess typical and atypical populations. A second focus has become testing the feasibility of using various functional and structural MRI techniques in translational studies of developmental neuropsyciatric disorders (e.g., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and autism). We are exploring ways to better characterize individual patients with these psychopathologies to help guide future diagnostic, therapeutic and genetic studies.

My day typically revolves around managing the lab and the various projects that are being conducted. I also write grants to help maintain our funding as well as papers. Teaching students in the lab and assisting with their writing is also a duty.

Last, I get to travel quite a bit around the U.S. and various other countries around the world to give talks about the lab’s work and to meet with other scientists who share my interests.

ties. It offers enriching science educational programs to middle and high school students. It also offers information and resources for families on mental health disorders. The program has been growing and been run very well by two talented directors in the lab. We think it is making a difference.

Q. Greatest personal accomplishment so far, and why?

A. No question my greatest personal accomplishment has been my family. Most of my closest friends from Augie tell me regularly (hopefully in jest) that there are very surprised I was able to find such a beautiful, well rounded, and accomplished wife. Equally surprising, considering their father, is how even-keeled and “put together” my 8-year-old boy and 19-month-old girl are!

Q. Looking ahead, what’s next for you, professionally and personally?

A. Right now its full steam ahead for myself and my laboratory. We are currently making good progress with regard to our programmatic goals and in due time can hopefully improve our understanding of brain development in the context of these complex mental disorders.

My personal plans revolve around getting back on the golf course to improve my increasing handicap. I’ve also been working with my boy as a coach for his soccer and basketball teams, so I will be spending some needed time in the gym and on the field.
