from the Charleville area of north Cork, can be held until this evening, at which point he will have to be either released or charged. Ms Collins, from Tralee but who had been living in recent years in Clashduv in Togher, was found dead in a flat on Popham’s Road yesterday when the emergency services

were alerted shortly after 3am. A post-mortem revealed that she died following a vicious assault, in which she suffered head and neck injuries. Despite efforts to save the mum-of-three by emergency services , she was pronounced dead at the scene. She had been visiting the premises on Popham’s Road a number of times in recent weeks and knew the suspected

attacker. The 42-year-old man was arrested at the property where the victim’s body was found and he was being detained at Mayf ield Garda Station under the Criminal Justice Act. An incident room has been established at Mayfield Garda Station and a family liaison has been appointed to work with Nicola Collins’s family. ■ See Page 3.

Bus strike affecting special needs students ADULTS with intellectual disabilities are being forced to miss Cope Foundation training initiatives this week, because of the Bus Éireann strike action. Marian Hennessy, a team leader at further education training facility Doras, on Penrose Wharf, which supports people with special needs in their search for employment, said only 25% of her students were able to make classes this week.

■ Sarah Horgan Members of Doras, a COPE Foundation initiative for those between the ages of 18 and 24, are just some of those suffering from the stand-off between bus drivers and Bus Éireann. Marian said: “We have people travelling from all parts of Cork, from Macroom to Youghal. Having a bus service is vital

for promoting a sense of independence among students. Ever since the strike was announced we have been down numbers. Only a quarter of our students were able to make it in yesterday, so a lot of people are missing out on the service.” ■ Continued on page 2
