HELLO SUMMER! Welcome to the summer edition for 2015. As we write this we aren’t entirely sure that summer knows its supposed to be on its way.

Fingers crossed that it arrives just in time for distribution!

We have a whole host of events taking place over the summer to celebrate the town’s Jubilee. The committee have been working really hard to co-ordinate events from many of our local groups and you can find details inside.

We really love the idea of the Treasure Trails all based in and around Dalgety Bay. Available from the local library these are sure to ignite some local competition!

Did you know that Dalgety Bay is home to Scotland’s largest charity festival - the PKD Festival.

That’s quite an achievement and certainly puts the Bay on the map!

Needing outdoor chairs for his large family, Lee experimented with a simple wooden plank construction – and the Adirondack Chair (initially ‘Westport Chair) was born.

Our passion is handmade garden furniture based upon the Adirondack Chair – and since semi-retiring I spend my time handcrafting luxury Adirondack garden furniture to order, using only high quality sustainable timber and other high-grade materials.

Since then, this classic build has gone on to grace gardens, patios and decking around the world. It’s seen minor modifications over the years, but the basic rustic look is the same.

The original Adirondack design was first created in the USA. The year was 1903 and businessman Thomas Lee was taking to his summer retreat in the lakeside town of Westport, in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.

Dalgety Bay Relay For Life Members Will Be Welcoming A Special Visitor In August!

Rhona Guild, Secretary and Vice Chair of CRUK Relay for Life Kirriemuir is to be cycling 780 miles around all of the Scottish relays, including Dalgety Bay, between the 16th and 24th August. The solo cycle ride aims to raise awareness of Relay for Life and hopefully add to the funds raised for Cancer Research UK. Rhona will depart on her ride as Relay for Life Kirriemuir closes at mid-day on Sunday 16th August and over the next week will visit all Relay sites including Dundee, Arbroath,

At each site Rhona hopes to meet with local Relay for Life committee members and participants, with the planned visit to Dalgety Bay on Sunday 23rd August, arriving at the Sports Centre around 11.30 am.

Relay for Life is a 24 hour community event where teams of between 8-15 take it in turns to walk around a track throughout the event to raise awareness of cancer and raise much needed funds to support the work of Cancer Research UK. The event celebrates cancer survivors and remembers those lost in the Candle of Hope ceremony.

Mind Your Posture: On Holiday Often, when people are on holiday and out of their normal routine, they can end up causing themselves unnecessary discomfort and stress by injuring themselves.

So taking note of these top holiday tips from Dalgety Bay Chiropractic is a good place to start.

Before you go….

Suitcase selection - Choose wisely, buy the lightest case possible that has wheels; hard cases can sometimes weigh a lot before you even start to fill them.

Two cases are better than one - If possible take two light suitcases rather than one, so you can distribute the weight more easily.

Get a good night’s sleep - Travelling when tired increases your chances of injury, so make sure you sleep well the night before a long journey and avoid rushing around.

Driving…

Make adjustments - Many back problems are caused or aggravated by poor driving posture. If you’re driving to your holiday destination, ensure the seat position is slightly backwards so that it feels natural and that your elbows are at a comfortable and relaxed angle.

Relaxing - Relax at the wheel, as this reduces stress on the spine and allows your seat to take your weight.

Take regular breaks - Stop and stretch your legs (and arms!) at least every two hours.

Clench your cheeks - If you are stuck in traffic, exercise in your seat. Try buttock clenches, side bends and shoulder shrugs and circles.

Flying….

Flying high - Avoid alcohol during the flight as this will cause you to dehydrate. This can exaggerate muscle pain, so drink plenty of water instead.

Air-exercise - You will be restricted to your seat for most of the flight but avoid stiffness 8

by doing shoulder shrugs, buttock clenches and foot circles. Take the opportunity to get up and stretch your legs whenever you can.

Arrivals…

Avoid ‘travelators’ - Get your joints moving quickly after a flight and walk rather than take the easy option of a moving walkway.

Round and round– Ensure your bag is easily identifiable (e.g. knot a ribbon around the handle) to avoid lifting other people’s heavy cases in error.

Push, don’t pull! - Many wheeled cases encourage you to pull the case handle from behind, but this makes the upper body and back twist. If possible, push the case in front of you.

At Your Destination…

Bed down at the hotel - When you get to your hotel, if your bed is too hard ask the hotel staff for a spare duvet, or blanket to put between you and the mattress.

Lounging around - If you’re heading to the sun loungers in search of that perfect tan, try not to lie on your tummy with your back and neck arched back when reading your book or magazine. Put the reading matter on the floor, so that you can view it over the edge of the sun bed; this should allow you to keep your head and neck in a more neutral position.

Ingrown Toenails How do you cut yours?

You could be forgiven for thinking that all toenails are the same; it’s not something we generally pay attention to. However, during a day in the clinic, we can come across a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colours.

Toenails can tell us, about your age, whether you’ve been stressed, and also a lot about your health or more serious underlying problems.

Ingrown toenail - What is it?

Ingrown toenails result in many people seeking the help and advice of a Podiatrist, and are a common problem that we often see in the clinic. An ingrown toenail occurs when the corner edge, or spicule (small spike), of the toenail grows into the skin next to the edge of the nail and pierces the skin. This in turn causes the toe to become red, swollen and tender (inflamed) and can lead to local infection. Antibiotics may be needed.

Causes

There are a variety of causes, such as poor foot hygiene, excessively sweaty feet (which can be treated easily), injury and even genetics play a part in the way the nail is shaped or the way you walk. However, the most common causes of ingrown toenails are incorrectly cut toenails and wearing tight fitting shoes or hosiery.

Symptoms

One of the early signs of an ingrown toenail is, tenderness within the skin surrounding the nail. It is best to visit a Podiatrist at this stage, for treatment, before it becomes worse. Ultimately what can happen is that, bacteria can gain entry to the skin and cause infection. This results in pain, (which can be severe), redness and a rise in temperature in the surrounding tissues, swelling and 10

possibly the formation of pus, which in turn puts more pressure on the area. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the rest of the toe (making treatment more painful).

Self-help

As soon as you notice mild symptoms, there are a few things you can do to prevent it from getting worse.  Painkillers - Take Paracetamol or Ibuprofen to relieve the pain  Soak your foot/feet in warm water 3-4 times a day and use a cotton bud to push the skin away at the side of the nail

 Wear wide fitting shoes

Treatment

If you are finding it difficult to alleviate the pain, then a visit to a Podiatrist is the answer.

They will examine the area and remove the offending piece of nail that is digging into the skin. On occasion, people arrive at the clinic hobbling in pain, then leave feeling great after treatment. This has to be one of the most satisfying parts of my job and is another reason why I love my job.

In some instances, the problem may recur and toenail surgery may be necessary to relieve the problem. This is a small and simple procedure where a small part of the nail is removed (on occasion, the whole nail) under local anaesthesia. A chemical called Phenol is then applied to prevent regrowth of the problem.

Prevention

As the old adage goes, prevention is better than cure, so here are some tips to prevent ingrown toenails occurring:  Cut your toenails straight across (don’t be tempted to cut the corners off )  Do not cut your toenail too short  Cut your toenails after a bath or shower when they’re soft  Wear loose fitting socks and tights  Avoid narrow shoes  Make sure you are wearing a shoe that fits (this may sound silly, but people who are, say a size 6, will pick up a size 6 in all shops regardless of whether they fit well.

In some brands a size 6.5 may suit better and in others a 5.5) It is more about shoe fitting than shoe size.

Lots of people are growing weary at the lack of transparency of traditional firms and seriously question the justification of traditional, expensive estate agents fees.

The way people choose to sell their home is a personal choice we believe you should have a third choice all the benefits of a high street traditional agent with all the savings that can be made using online agent so a win win situation for you as a seller If you were given the choice of paying £4,000 to sell your house or £725.00 which would you choose? The answer seems obvious, but the majority of home owners choose the more expensive option when selling their property because they use a traditional estate agent rather than an online one. According to research by one online agent, British home owners paid more than £3bn in fees to high street estate agents during 2013.

There are alternatives the majority of sellers are simply unaware that online agents exist. According to a poll by Ipsos MORI, the

market research company, 70% of home sellers were unaware of any alternative to traditional estate agents with many people using online estate agents as an alternative low cost option. Online estate agencies have grown in popularity significantly over recent years and is an option that sellers are happy to buy into.

However there is an issue with this method of house selling. Home owners may not be aware or bothered by the restrictions set by the web host that the online market have placed on them. Local knowledge is something that everybody understands, only a local agent will know the correct price for a certain street, and what properties are selling well at a given time.

An online agent working remotely won't have the same breadth of knowledge such as contact with third parties, surveyors for the Home Report or solicitors when it comes to making an offer. We will also arrange as well as conduct viewings none of which you will receive from an agent based solely online.

Hardies are ensuring that their advices is not only industry relevant but that the firm has a strong plan of action for future growth. Eleven new partners have recently been appointed - a new “First XI” team, including three staff members from the Dunfermline office who are now partners.

The firm, which has over one hundred members of staff across its office network, prepared for the future by carrying out a detailed internal selection process to identify the “rising stars” who will now 20

The new partners are Paul Duncan, (Valuation), Danny McArthur and Martin McConnell, (Building Surveying) in the Dunfermline office; Allan Smith (Quantity Surveying), Kate Bilbrough (Building Surveying), David Vince (Building Surveying) and Murray Warner (Project Management) in the Edinburgh office; Gary Ovenstone (Partner in the St Andrews office); Neil Moir (Valuation) in Hardies Aberdeen office; Keith Gifford in Hardies Dalkeith office and Darron McKay, (Quantity Surveying) from the Dundee office who completes the line up.

Hardies Managing Partner Derek Ferrier said: “It’s a new era for Hardies – we are very excited to unveil our new Partners and are confident that we have the right people to lead the company forward. We’ve invested in staff over many years and now we’re putting our trust in our staff. Hardies has been providing surveying services for more than one hundred years and the purpose of this succession planning is to provide the right platform for future growth in the next one hundred years. We are only custodians of the Hardies name and need to ensure the firm continues to grow.”

Mr Ferrier explained that the firm,

which provides a range of professional property and construction consultancy services including project management, quantity surveying, building surveying to valuation surveying and dispute resolution support services, advertised internally for prospective new partners. They were required to put together a presentation demonstrating what unique attributes they could bring to Hardies as a partner in the firm. “We wanted to know what they would bring to the table to lead Hardies forward and help the firm to continue to grow and develop,” he said.

“It was an extremely interesting exercise and really helped us to clarify who the best people were and it did not depend on how old they were or how long they had been with us,“ he continued. “Technology for example is moving so fast. We need to release our young stars and see what they can do in this vein. We want to be at the

forefront of our profession and using new technology to our advantage is one of the ways in which we will continue to achieve that.”

Ah we do love a good festival.

Whether you’re off to Leeds to watch Mumford & Sons, heading to Sundown for a spot of glamping, or taking the whole family to Camp Bestival, you can’t beat a festival for creating some long-lasting memories of summer. While you don’t need to pack your full make-up bag, there are still a few beauty essentials you’ll want to squash into your rucksack.

Trying to keep your cool on a sweltering summer’s day, surrounded by a few thousand people, is not an easy task. A re-usable water bottle and pocket fan are pretty much essential, but you may also want to add Green People Toning Hydrating Mist to your arsenal. The Cooldowns are a brand new theatre group for people of all ages with Down’s Syndrome and their siblings.

The group was started in February of this year by Discovery Magazines very own Valerie Dowie as she had been looking for a group for her son, Ryan, to join and showcase his theatrical talent!

I think it’s fair to say that Ryan has always had star quality and charms everyone he comes into contact with - admittedly I may be a tad biased!

The group meet every Sunday at Rosyth Methodist Church from 2-4pm and welcome people of all ages from anywhere in Scotland with Down’s Syndrome, and their siblings, to come along and join the madness! The group focus on singing, drama and dancing and are hoping to be working towards a show at some point this year.

A quick introduction to the team who make this possible: There is Valerie who started this group up and generally runs everything (and every one!) and always with a smile!

Jaynie, who is the singing teacher who also dabbles in a bit of dance!

And Kirsty who is the drama teacher (who dabbles in 90's pop dancing ...5,6,7,8...)

Dalgety Bay Community Woodlands Group The Woodlands Group has been incredibly busy since we last caught up with them.

They have very kindly given us an update on their activities and have allowed us to share.

TREE PLANTING

This year the Woodland Trust is commemorating the sacrifice of WW1 soldiers by supplying packs of trees to be planted across the country with their slogan ‘We will stand for those who fell’ and the Dalgety Bay Community Woodlands Group applied for and received 105 trees to plant and thus help with this project.

Bathing House Wood was chosen as it had suffered badly during the severe gales of winter 2013. This area was also deemed appropriate as this was where the soldiers of the Forth Royal Garrison Artillery were accommodated during WW1. They were there as part of the coastal defence force securing the approaches to the vitally important Rosyth naval port and dockyard.

The remains of gun emplacements where two heavy guns were mounted can be found on the cliff top just above the wood and searchlights were mounted on Downing Point.

Pupils from P7 in Donibristle Primary School were also assisting in the planting as part of their John Muir Award. An additional dimension to this tree planting exercise was the presence of some current and past members of the Royal Artillery. This was a fantastic bonus and provided an opportunity for Major Brian Robson, to talk to the children at the school in advance of the planting about the history of the regiment and its involvement in Dalgety Bay and WW1.

Following the planting, Colonel Kinloch was able to talk further to the children about the sacrifices made by WW1 soldiers and answer pupils questions, and this included the identification of a WW1 belt buckle uncovered by one pupil during the planting.

He finally read a poem reflecting on the blooming of poppies and the loss of soldiers in war written by Erinn Law one of the 40
