Three Ottoman bohça (wrapping cloth or cover), west Anatolia, 19th century, two 34in. x 32in. 87cm. x 81cm. The third, 30in. x 29in., 76cm. x 74cm. Lot 11 11. Long Kalamkari (printed cotton) fragment, probably Persia, late 19th/early 20th century, all over boteh motifs on an undyed ground within a floral cartouche border, the fragment 101in. x 68in. 257cm. x 173cm. Now sewn down onto a later heavy quality mid-brown cotton with hanging loops at the top end. Surface marks and fading. £80-120 (+18% BP*)

Turkmen collection of caps, trappings and other items, all late 19th/early 20th century, comprising: three embroidered skull caps; child’s red cotton embroidered hat; an embroidered tri-angular cap extension (used to protect the nape of the neck and the long plait); a child’s green and red velvet bokche with printed cotton lining; velvet scissors case, printed with floral boteh and a printed cotton and felted wool decorative camel cover adorned with hawk feathers, bones, coins and other items, 71in.

10. Persian ‘nakshe’ (woman’s trousering) silk embroidery costume fragment, early 19th century, 25in. x 15in. 64cm. x 46cm.

Diagonal bands, of varying widths, worked with intricate silk embroidered flowers and foliage.

With joins in places and one narrow outer border joined. Unlined and all edges bound with green silk. Fading and wear consistent with age. ‘Nakshe’ panels decorated the outer leg panels of women’s trousers and when the trousers had worn out, the panels were removed and incorporated into another pair of trousers. A very similar costume fragment sold these Rooms 8th March 2012, Lot 1723. £100-200 (+18% BP*)

Collection of five Banjara textiles, north India, second half 20th century comprising two dowry bags of envelope shape, one trimmed with cowrie shells; another larger dowry bag, red printed cotton and quilted; all unlined; a printed and quilted cradle cover with embroidered details, lined printed cotton; edges bound in blue cotton and a printed, quilted and embroidered square cover trimmed with cowrie shells and lined with printed cotton. Chinese soft pink silk robe with double fold-back sleeve bands, late 19th/early 20th century, finely embroidered in coloured silks with all over flowering plants, butterflies, bats, fruiting and flowering branches; black silk ribbon embroidered butterflies and flowers repeated in the sleeve bands which are lined with ivory satin embroidered with butterflies and flower sprays, gold coloured metal toggle fastening; lined with bright green silk. Some fading and water marks in places; slight fraying to collar binding. £600-700 (+18% BP*)

Chinese red silk satin informal robe, first half 20th century, embroidered in coloured silks and couched metal thread principally in Peking knot with floral roundels and stylized floral flaming pearls to the front, back and sleeves; ivory satin facings, collar and hem, the ivory sleeve bands embroidered with flowers in a garden setting. Fabric toggle fastening. Lined with printed red silk. 23in. 59cm. across back (underarm). £200-300 (+18% BP*)

Chinese lady’s informal robe, 19th century, red silk satin finely embroidered with three roundels of differing flowers to the front and to the back above a sea-wave border with auspicious symbols; one similar floral roundel on each shoulder; the narrow ivory satin sleeve bands embroidered in coloured silks and metal thread with flowers, berries and auspicious objects, lined with pale blue silk; plain rounded neckline with red silk fastening. Lot 26 26. Pair of decorative crewelwork-style curtains, early 20th century, each 63in. x 55in. 160cm. x 140cm. Bobble trim. Each with rufflette tape heading. Lined and interlined.

29. Three printed squares comprising a souvenir colour printed silk scarf depicting an early 19th century scene of the St Leger Race, Doncaster, titled: Doncaster Race for The Great St. Leger Stakes, the border printed with various racehorses, grooms and riders with the St. Leger Trophy in each corner, embroidered initials JB or IB in one corner, 33in. sq. 84cm. sq.

Time stains and small splits; a printed cotton neckerchief, late 19th century, entitled: The Manx Puzzle. Where’s the Cat? 24in. square; 61cm. square. Some time stains. An almost identical example (differing narrow border) is illustrated on www.puzzlemuseum.com; and a sepia printed silk neckerchief depicting children playing with skipping ropes around the border, the field filled with short pieces of rope, some being held in a hand, others wrapped around clogs, 25in. x 24in. 64cm. x 61cm. Lot 30 30. Painted silk and woolwork picture, Rachel with her father’s sheep, dated 1829, 19in. x 17½in. 48cm. x 44cm. The painted silk ground embroidered in coloured wools with the sheep and other details in raised woolwork. An oval cartouche at the base embroidered: ‘Gn Ch29 v9. Rachel came with her father’s sheep for she kept them.’ Jane Humby 1829’ The figures with painted faces and arms. Shattering to the silk sky and insect damage to edges in places. 31. Gentleman’s silk court waistcoat, English, late 18th/ early 19th century exquisitely embroidered with flowers, seed heads and foliage in coloured silks on an ivory silk ground, the tiny buttons to the front embroidered with pale blue floral sprigs, ties to the back.

22in. 56cm. across back at the lower armholes and 22in.

56cm. from the lower collar edge to the hem. The top two buttonholes are unfinished, indicating that the waistcoat has probably never been worn.

Few time spots in places. By direct descent through the present owner’s family. A remarkably similar waistcoat was sold in these Rooms, Lot 35 1st March 2017. £400-600 (+18% BP*)

Appliquéd with silk panels embroidered with flowers and foliage in coloured silks and metal thread. Bobble trim to the lower edge. Lined.

Repeating kochanak main border and tiny flowering plants in the top elem.

Terms & Conditions of sale Affecting purchasers and other attending the sale premises.

1. Purchasers will be deemed: a) To have inspected their lots prior to the sale; and b) To have accepted that lots are sold with all faults and imperfections specifically mentioned or not irrespective of whether they have bid in person, by commission or through an agent.

2. All goods are second hand and sold without warranty unless otherwise stated in the sale catalogue or by the auctioneers from the rostrum.

Any implied warranty, condition or other term is excluded except where to do so would be unlawful.

3. The auctioneers undertake that care has been taken to see that catalogue descriptions are accurate and reliable, however these are matters of opinion only and shall not be taken to be statements of fact.

4. The auctioneers act as agents to the vendor and shall not incur liability to any purchaser for any statement, representation or warranty as to title, quality or otherwise of any lot made on behalf of and with the vendors authority.

5. The auctioneers reserve on behalf of themselves and the vendors the following rights: a) To sell subject to a reserve price b) To bid on behalf of a vendor and/or purchasers c) To refuse any bid d) To rearrange, consolidate, divide, add or withdraw any lots or vary the order of the sale e) To exclude any person from the premises if there be good reason to do so.

6. The auctioneers shall regulate the bidding and shall determine from time to time the appropriate increment needed to advance the bidding.

7. The person making the highest accepted bid shall be the purchaser as defined in these conditions 8. If a dispute arises as to any bidding then at the discretion of the auctioneers either: a) The lot to which the disputed bid relates shall immediately be put up again, or b) The auctioneer shall determine the dispute and his decision shall be final and binding on all parties.

9. a) At the fall of the hammer the purchaser is required to give his own name (or where applicable his paddle number). If he has bid on behalf of another person, company or organisation he should make this clear to the auctioneer at the time. b) If, and as required the auctioneer at the fall of the hammer the purchaser shall also give his address and/or the address if the principal and/or pay to the auctioneer all or part of the purchase price plus VAT and buyer’s premium. c) Any such payment at the fall of the hammer may be treated, at the auctioneer’s discretion, as a general deposit against all purchases, made by the purchaser on the day. d) All lots must be paid for in cash, or in other manners acceptable to the auctioneers on the day of the sale and before delivery is given. e) Failure by the purchaser to comply with sub clause (a) and (b) shall entitle the auctioneer to cancel the sale and, at his discretion, to immediately re-offer the lot in question for sale by auction.

10. No transfer of lots or sub-sale by any purchaser is recognised by the auctioneers. Purchasers shall main liable under these conditions in respect of their own purchase under the sale.

11. Private treaty sales shall be subject to these conditions of sale where applicable.

12. All lots will be at the purchasers risk from the fall of the hammer: Purchasers are therefore advised to check that they have adequate insurance cover.

13. Purchasers who pay by cheque will not normally be permitted to remove goods until their cheques have cleared through the bank.

Whether removal is permitted or not. Ownership of goods will not be deemed to pass to the purchaser until their cheque has cleared.

b) If upon resale as aforesaid a lower price is obtained foe any lot that was obtained on the first sale, the difference in price together with all costs and charges attending the resale shall be a debt due from the purchaser in default at the first sale. c) Alternatively the auctioneers may, at their discretion, store the lot and recover reasonable charges for doing so from the purchaser.

16. Rescission Notwithstanding any terms of these conditions if, within 14 days after the sale, the auctioneers have received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in their view the lot is a deliberate forgery and that within 21 days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the auctioneers in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer and if the auctioneers consider in the light of the entry in the catalogue, that the lot is a deliberate forgery than the sale of the lot will be rescinded and purchase price refunded. In the event of a dispute then the matter will be settled by arbitration.

In completing the bidder registration on www.the-saleroom.com and providing your credit card details and unless alternative arrangements are agreed with Netherhampton Salerooms you: a. authorise Netherhampton Salerooms, if they so wish, to charge the credit card given in part or full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased in the auction via the-saleroom.com, and b. confirm that you are authorised to provide these credit card details to Netherhampton Salerooms through www.the-saleroom.com and agree that Netherhampton Salerooms are entitled to ship the goods to the card holder name and card holder address provided in fulfilment of the sale.
