Car auctions can be a fast, exciting way to find your next vehicle, often at a far better price than you’d find at a dealership. Whether you’re after a reliable daily driver or a nearly-new model, auctions offer access to a broad range of stock.
But it’s not without risk. To make the most of the opportunity and avoid expensive pitfalls, here are the essential checks every buyer should make before placing a bid.
Do Your Homework
Auction houses vary in how they operate, so it’s worth understanding the basics before you start. Read up on how the bidding process works - whether it’s online, timed or live in-person - and check what buyer support is offered. Review the terms and conditions carefully, including how listings are described, what fees apply and what your responsibilities are after winning a bid.
Check the Vehicle’s History
A listing might give you the basics, but a proper history check is a must. Use the registration number to look up details like outstanding finance, write-off history, mileage discrepancies and MOT records. These checks give you a clearer picture of the vehicle’s background and help you avoid nasty surprises later.
Inspect Carefully
If the auction includes a viewing day, use it. Look for cosmetic damage like dents, rust or mismatched paintwork. Check tyre wear, the interior condition and under the bonnet for leaks or signs of excessive wear. If bidding online, review every image in detail and ask for more information if anything is unclear. Don’t rely solely on the description, do your due diligence.
Understand the Fees
Winning the bid doesn’t mean that’s the price you’ll pay. Most auctions add a buyer’s premium - typically a percentage on top of your bid - and VAT may apply. Make sure you know the final cost, when payment is due and how quickly you’ll need to collect the vehicle.
Set a Firm Budget
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of bidding, but having a set budget will keep you grounded. Account for extras like fees, insurance, potential repairs and road tax. Know your limit and stick to it.
Test Drives Are Rare
Unlike buying from a dealer, test drives are generally not an option at auction. You may be allowed to start the engine and check the dashboard, but that’s usually as far as it goes. This makes your research and inspection all the more critical.
Know Your Rights
Cars at auction are typically sold ‘as seen’, which means you accept the condition the vehicle is in at the time of sale. You’ll have fewer consumer rights than you would through a dealer. However, auctioneers must still declare known faults, so always read the listing carefully and ask questions if needed.
Find Your Next Auction
With the right preparation, car auctions can be a smart and rewarding way to buy. Auction News helps you discover vehicle auctions happening across the UK - both online and on-site - making it easier to find, compare and bid with confidence. Find Your Next Vehicle
