The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine pursues a mission of teaching, service, and discovery. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital plays a central role in each component of that mission. Students rotate through the Wilford and Kate Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital, the J.T. Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital, and the Auburn University Veterinary Clinic during their clinical education, learning the art and science of clinical practice side-by-side our outstanding faculty members.

Through the flow of referral patients and consultations, the hospital keeps the college in close touch with practicing veterinarians. These relationships foster scholarship through basic and applied research, clinical trials, and the training of clinical residents.

About Kristina Photakis, Hospital Administrator As hospital administrator, Kristina Photakis’ role is to ensure clients and referring veterinarians have an excellent experience. Her primary responsibilities focus on managing the hospital staff, finances, and daily operations.

Kristina comes from the human side of medicine, previously working for complex health care systems, including the Cook County Health and System in Chicago, Illinois, and Emory Transplant Center in Atlanta, Georgia. She holds a master’s degree in healthcare administration.

Referral Policies and Procedures SMALL ANIMALS

For the convenience of our referring veterinarians, the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital offers online and over-the-phone options for submitting referrals. All referrals are with a Specialty Service, not with a specific clinician. Supporting medical history and patient records are required in order to ensure that our clinicians, technical staff, and veterinary students have the most up-to-date information regarding the referral. The faculty of the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital emphasize that the basis for strong communication and a team approach to the patient’s care begins with the information you provide.

The Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital Referral Liaison will assist you by ensuring the referral process is quick and efficient, but also fully focused on the treatment and well-being of your clients and patients.

The Referral Liaison facilitates key communication about patients from the patient’s primary veterinarian and the faculty and staff of the teaching hospital. Contact our Referral Liaison at 334/844-5230.

As Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital’s Client Advocate, Nancy Wagner is an important person for you to know as she will be assisting clients, an effective liaison between the needs of animal owners and the hospital faculty and staff. Nancy educates clients about the teaching hospital and the role the clinician, resident, intern, and veterinary student play in the health care of their beloved pet. LARGE ANIMALS

Referrals to the John Thomas Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital, by appointment or emergency admission, can be made by calling 334/8444490. Referral for appointments can be made during regular business hours. The front office staff will gather information in order to direct the call to the appropriate service and the call will be transferred to a clinician on duty. Referrals for after-hours emergency care can be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The after-hours student resident will gather a small amount of information before transferring your call to the resident veterinarian on duty.

GULF SHORES

Veterinarians can refer cases now to Auburn Veterinary Specialists-Gulf Shores. Call the Referral Office at the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital — 334/844-5230.

No online referrals are being accepted for Gulf Shores at this time.

What to Expect When You Make a Referral Our goal is to communicate with you as quickly as possible following the admission of referred patients. The clinician will contact you by your preferred communications methods (phone, email, text, or combination).

The clinician will strive to communicate throughout hospitalization and when a significant change occurs in the patient’s care, including changes in the diagnosis or treatment regimen or the death of the patient.

Additionally, you will be notified at the time the patient is discharged from the hospital, and discharge summaries will be emailed/faxed to you promptly.

If you have not received the level of communication you desire, please contact the Referral Office at 334/844-5230.

Financial Policies/Procedures The Veterinary Teaching Hospital requires all clients pay a deposit (approximating half of the highend of the estimate) at the time of hospitalization. For example, an estimate of $1,000 to $4,000 would require a $2,000 deposit. Full payment is required at discharge unless a pre-approved payment plan is established. A financial counselor is available to assist clients in applying for Care Credit and establishing a payment plan if necessary.

The teaching hospital accepts cash, check, Visa, Discover, American Express, MasterCard, and Care Credit. We also accept online payment.

Auburn Veterinary Specialists–Gulf Shores

Auburn Veterinary Specialists-Gulf Shores opened in 2019 as a satellite of the Auburn Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The 12,000-square-foot facility is the centerpiece of the Auburn University Educational Complex.

The center operates as a referral-only facility, and provides services in surgery and internal medicine for the local veterinary community. The facility also provides an educational function as fourth-year Auburn veterinary students participate in elective two-week clinical rotations as well as continuing education and other programs for practicing veterinarians.

Avian and Exotics

The Avian and Exotic Service provides care for a variety of avian (including poultry), reptilian, amphibian, and mammalian species. The Avian and Exotic Service offers comprehensive examinations addressing husbandry, nutrition, and enrichment specifically for avian/exotic species. The service also offers emergency care, laboratory diagnostics, and advanced imaging, hospitalization, and surgery. The Avian and Exotic Service’s goal is to provide excellent care, and continuing support, throughout the lifetime of each avian and exotic patient. The service does not provide care for venomous species, primates, fish, or swine.

Cardiology

The Cardiology Service provides specialized diagnosis and care of small and large animal patients with structural and/or electrical cardiac dysfunction. The service provides diagnosis and long-term and emergency medical management of cardiac diseases and arrhythmias in all animal species, as well as interventional therapy for congenital cardiac diseases and pacemaker implantation. Comprehensive, compassionate patient and client care are the primary goals of the Cardiology Service.

Dermatology

The Dermatology Service specializes in the diagnosis of diseases of the skin in dogs, cats, and large animals. The service provides diagnosis and treatment for allergies (environmental, food, flea), ear conditions, infectious dermatitis, autoimmune, neoplastic, and parasitic skin disorders.

The Dermatology Service has the goal of providing patients and clients with excellent care and continuing support for treatment and management of companion animal dermatoses.

Emergency and Critical Care

The Emergency and Critical Care Service provides immediate evaluation, stabilization, and treatment of pets with emergent or serious conditions, as well as ongoing care for critically ill or injured pets 24/7. As a same-day referral center, we also work closely with veterinarians in the Southeast to ensure all pets receive the most advanced care available. If possible, pet owners are encouraged to call ahead at 334/844-4690, but an appointment is not required. Walk-ins are always welcome.

Internal Medicine

The Small Animal Internal Medicine Service provides state-of-the-art care to small and large animals with complex medical conditions. A team of animal health care providers, including board-certified internists (faculty), residents, interns, technicians, and fourth-year veterinary students provide diagnostic testing and treatment for patients with conditions of the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, liver, urinary tract, blood and lymphatics, endocrine system, and immune system, and with infectious diseases.

Neurology/Neurosurgery

The Neurology/Neurosurgery Service strives to provide state-of-the-art medical care to animals with neurological disease. Faculty, residents, technicians, and students care for animals with neurologic disease from initial diagnostic tests to the application of treatments for these disorders.

Oncology

The mission of the Oncology Service is to help animals with cancer achieve longer, happier lives. While a cure is not possible in all instances, usually some form of therapy can improve the patient’s quality of life. The service offers specialized tests for the diagnosis of cancer, including digital radiography, ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and nuclear medicine; biopsies; cytology; and flow cytometry. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, the service provides clinical trials that may offer innovative diagnostics or treatment options for certain cancer types. Consultation with other services within the hospital allow for management of patients with complicated conditions.

Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Service provides comprehensive ophthalmic care to canine, feline, exotic species, and large animal patients. The service provides a full range of diagnostics, microsurgical techniques, and therapeutic options for the treatment of ophthalmic disease.

Orthopedics

The Orthopedic Service specializes in orthopedic conditions and injuries in dogs and cats. The service provides diagnosis and treatment of fractures, injuries to tendons, ligaments, and joints, congenital abnormalities, osteoarthritis and generalized lameness. The Orthopedic Service has the goal of providing patients and clients with outstanding care and support for treatment and management of companion animal orthopedic conditions.

Physical Rehabilitation

The use of physical rehabilitation to assist in an animal’s recovery is now a well-accepted practice for veterinary patients. Our Physical Rehabilitation Service targets restoration of physical function for animals with diseases caused by weakness, loss of coordination, inability to stand or walk, or other problems with mobility. Our Physical Rehabilitation Service has a variety of equipment including underwater treadmills, an exercise physiology pool, and a standard treadmill and climbing apparatus for diagnosis and treatment of specific injuries for dogs and cats.

Soft Tissue Surgery

The mission of the Soft Tissue Surgery Service is to provide expert-level care to small animal patients. Our veterinarians have many years of experience with a variety of surgical conditions. The Soft Tissue Surgery Service sees appointments twice weekly and has opportunities for early morning admissions, after consultation with one of the surgeons. For companion animal patients, the service is responsible for the surgical needs of the Emergency and Critical Care Service, Internal Medicine Service, and other services in need of consultation.

Theriogenology

The Theriogenology Service specializes in companion animal reproduction.

The services include breeding management in the female to semen collection and evaluation in the male, semen cryopreservation, pregnancy diagnoses and management, and all insemination techniques including transcervical inseminations. We also offer emergency services for both male and female animals including penile injuries or difficult deliveries.

Equine Internal Medicine

The Equine Internal Medicine service provides diagnostic evaluations, hospitalization, and intensive care management of horses needing 24/7 therapy, diagnosis and treatment of emergency conditions, and routine preventative health care. The aim of the Equine Internal Medicine service is to provide horses with outstanding care and to provide their owners with compassionate, exceptional service. The Equine Internal Medicine Service evaluates horses with a variety of clinical conditions. These include, but are not limited to, diseases of the respiratory tract such as pneumonia, recurrent airway obstruction (R AO or heaves), and exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH); neurological abnormalities such as wobblers syndrome and equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM); gastrointestinal diseases such as colic, diarrhea, equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS), and weight loss; endocrine conditions such as equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, or Equine Cushing’s syndrome); neonatal foal care; and many more. Additionally, the Equine Internal Medicine Service works closely with the board-certified specialists of the Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Dermatology, and Oncology services to diagnose and treat diseases of the equine eye, heart, skin, and to treat various equine cancers. The Equine Internal Medicine Service also performs routine preventative health care including vaccination, health certificates, Coggins testing, deworming, and dental care. The Equine Internal Medicine Service has access to state-of-the-art equipment for use on equine patients. This includes digital radiography, video endoscopy, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiation therapy (linear accelerator), electrocardiogram, and echocardiography.

Equine Ambulatory

The Ambulatory Service provides on-the-farm primary and emergency care to horses, cattle, and other farm animals within a 35-mile radius of the J.T. Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Emergency service is provided 24/7. We provide on-the-farm routine health care as well as evaluation and treatment of lame or sick animals. Routine health care services that are provided include: Coggins testing, travel papers (health certificate or passport), annual examination, vaccination, parasite control, nutritional consultation, and dentistry. In addition to routine health care, the ambulatory service provides lameness and performance evaluation, podiatry, reproductive services, evaluation of medical conditions

(respiratory, skin, neurologic, gastrointestinal, and ophthalmic), and field surgery services (castration, laceration repair, mass removals, etc.).

The service is equipped with a computed radiography system, ultrasound, endoscopy, and motorized dental equipment. We also have access to additional in-house equipment and full access to J.T. Vaughan laboratory services.

Equine Emergency

The Equine Emergency and Critical Care Service is dedicated to providing for the emergency medical needs of horses in Alabama and the surrounding region. Our board-certified specialists and technical staff are committed to excellence in the care of critically ill equine patients 24/7. The fully equipped J.T. Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital allows for the highest standard of care for our clients’ horses, day or night, as well as excellence in teaching for our veterinary students. The Equine Emergency and Critical Care Service is available to evaluate horses for diagnosis and treatment of emergency medical conditions outside of the normal operating hours for the J.T. Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital. The doctors and technical staff provide after-hours care on weekdays, throughout the weekend, and on all holidays. Horses can be evaluated with or without a referral from a veterinarian, and an appointment is not needed.

Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery

The Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery Service specializes in treatment of lameness and performance-related conditions as well as surgical intervention for soft tissue and orthopedic conditions of the equine athlete.

This service provides state-of-the-art diagnostic evaluations and treatment plans for outpatient, inpatient, and emergency conditions including those patients needing hospitalization and intensive care management. The aim of the Equine Surgery Service is to return horses to peak performance and to provide their owners with exceptional service. The Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery Service provides expertise and treatment of a wide variety of soft tissue and orthopedic diseases, including advanced techniques in fracture repair, laser surgery, and minimally invasive surgery such as arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and thoracoscopy.

Equine Theriogenology

The Equine Theriogenology Services include embryo transfer (including recipient mares), management of the stallion and mare, diagnostic reproduction evaluations, breeding soundness examinations, semen collection and shipment, surrogate mares (nurse mares) for orphaned foals, and treatment of the sub-fertile mare and stallion. The Equine Reproduction Center also stands stallions for breeding to outside mares. The Center offers monitoring of foaling for high risk mares and uses the FoAlertÂŽ birth monitoring system. Additionally, the Center offers an endometrial biopsy service for referring veterinarians that includes examination of biopsy samples and clinical consultation.

Food and Fiber Animal

The Food and Fiber Animal Service provides routine and specialty care for beef cattle, goats, sheep, alpacas, llamas, and pigs. We offer 24/7 emergency and critical care as well as around-the-clock care for hospitalized patients. Board-certified clinicians, residents, technicians, and senior veterinary students work together to provide the best quality of care available to our patients and clients.

The service is equipped for routine diagnostic procedures and therapeutic treatment of food and fiber animals. The college maintains state-of-the-art facilities suitable for beef and dairy cattle, small ruminants, camelids, and swine including an obstetrical suite, surgical suite, hydraulic tilt chute, and hydraulic foot trimming table.

A full-service surgical suite is utilized for cases with the support of a board-certified anesthesiologist for continuous monitoring during surgery and throughout the recovery period. Veterinary specialty services including radiology, dermatology ophthalmology, clinical pathology, microbiology, neurology, and pathology are also available.

Dairy

The Dairy Service offers individual animal treatment and herd health consultation for dairy herds to local producers and clients throughout the Southeast. The service offers 24-hour emergency and critical care services as well as around-the-clock care for hospitalized patients. Boardcertified clinicians, residents, technicians and fourth-year veterinary students work together to provide the best quality of care available to our patients and clients.

Farm visits allow an opportunity for our team to evaluate the management of commercial dairies and aid in the design and implementation of health maintenance programs including nutrition, vaccination, mastitis control, milking equipment evaluation, and transition cow protocols.

The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine maintains a functioning, commercial dairy on the campus of the Farm Animal Hospital. In addition to providing a facility suitable for milking hospitalized cows, the dairy herd provides numerous teaching opportunities for the veterinary students during their senior year. Auburn students are immersed in the dairy experience during their time on rotation, gaining hands-on experience feeding and milking the dairy herd, caring for and managing the growing calves, and participating in the protocols used to breed the cows and heifers.

Farm Animal Ambulatory

The Farm Animal Ambulatory Service provides on-farm care and consultations to local producers and clients in central Alabama and west Georgia.

The service provides individual animal medicine, reproduction and surgery, as well as herd level disease investigation. The service offers a 24/7 veterinary emergency care on the farm, as well as access to the J.T. Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital.

Farm Animal Theriogenology

The Farm Animal Therigenology Service offers individual animal treatment, herd health consultations, and reproductive management and planning for all farm animal species (beef and dairy cattle, goats, sheep, swine, and camelids). Board-certified clinicians, residents, technicians and senior veterinary students work together to provide the best quality of care to our patients and clients.

The service is equipped for routine diagnostic procedures and therapeutic treatment of food and fiber animals. The college maintains state-of-the-art facilities suitable for beef and dairy cattle, small ruminants, camelids, and swine.

ANCILLARY SERVICES

Anesthesiology

Our Anesthesiology Service patient care mission is to provide safe, effective, comprehensive general anesthesia and acute pain management for all patients requiring surgery or diagnostic procedures. Our team’s sole responsibility is ensuring the well-being and comfort for small and large animal patients under our care. We provide this service 24/7 when general anesthesia is required.

Pharmacy

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital Pharmacy is a licensed Alabama pharmacy and provides full pharmacy services to the patients of the J.T. Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital and the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital. The staff of three board certified veterinary pharmacists collectively have 80 years of experience exclusively in veterinary pharmacy.

Two additional pharmacists have 23 years of experience in veterinary pharmacy. There are six full time technical staff members, which include five certified Pharmacy Technicians.

The Pharmacy team provides support for all specialty services 7 days a week, which include inpatient care and questions from referring veterinarians and clients.

The Pharmacy staff also provides a platform for senior pharmacy students to experience veterinary pharmacy. Our veterinary pharmacists offer numerous continuing education courses on veterinary pharmacy law and pharmacology as part of the various state board requirements. Our pharmacists are available to answer drug information questions, with veterinary students and veterinary clinicians. The mission of The Pharmacy Service is to provide prescriptions for patients being seen on an outpatient basis pursuant to hospital policies and federal guidelines and serves as a source of information for clinicians, students, and referring veterinarians.

Radiology

The Diagnostic Radiology Service includes ultrasound, nuclear medicine, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and radiation therapy. Radiology faculty provide image interpretation and discuss their findings with the attending clinician. All imaging modalities are linked to a central computer (PACS), which provides permanent storage of the images and allows viewing access throughout the hospital within minutes of completion of an examination. We can email temporary links from the PACS to veterinarians enabling them to view images of their referred patients. Owners can be provided with CD/DVD copies of imaging for future reference. Radiology faculty also provide outreach consultations using teleradiography for veterinarians across the country.

Our equine standing CT machine — one of a handful in the U.S. — allows us to accurately diagnose and treat complex diseases in the skull of equine patients.

AUBURN VETERINARY SPECIALISTS–GULF SHORES Auburn Veterinary Specialists-Gulf Shores is the centerpiece of a 24,000-square-foot Auburn University Educational Complex in Gulf Shores, Alabama, providing specialty veterinary service and educational opportunities for students interested in internal medicine and surgery.

The center operates as a referral-only facility, and will provide services in surgery and internal medicine for the local veterinary community. The facility also provides an educational function as fourth-year Auburn veterinary students participate in elective two-week clinical rotations.

The Auburn University Educational Complex is a partnership with the City of Gulf Shores, announced by the city in a 2014 strategic plan called “Small Town, Big Beach- Vision 2025 for Sustainability” that included plans for the Coastal Alabama Center for Educational Excellence, an academic campus with a new high school and a new location for Coastal Alabama Community College.
