It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2020 Auckland Pride Festival. As we enter a new decade, we are excited to once again celebrate and showcase the queer excellence that will shine a rainbow over Tāmaki Makaurau in February.

The theme for the 2020 festival is Our Liberation, Our Celebration, Our Pride.

We chose this theme because it acknowleges the importance of our rich history of activism, and the importance of celebrating all queer identities. These ideas go hand in hand and sit at the centre of Pride. As queer communities we create space for both the tough conversations and the celebrations.This year’s programme provides plenty of opportunity for both.

OurGala returns to Q Theatre to open the festival with a taster of what is to come.

The following weekend, all of our rainbow communities are invited to come together to participate in the centrepiece of the festival, OurMarch. A celebratory hīkoi starting in Albert Park, it encapsulates the beautiful energy, positivity, and diversity of our communities.

As OurMarch arrives in Aotea Square, our newest event wiil begin. OurParty, in partnership with Auckland Live, builds on the energy of 2019’s postmarch gathering in Myers Park, creating a space for everyone to come together and continue the festivities. Entertainment from queer artists, musicians, and food trucks will keep us all in a celebratory mood well into the evening.

Other highlights to mark on the calendar are the Ending HIV Big Gay Out, celebrating 21 years, and the samesamebutdifferent Writers’ Festival, a showcase of our queer literary talent.

With final festival registrations open for another month, we’re excited to be able to continue building up a rich and well-rounded programme for 2020. Look out for announcements from the Auckland Council Proud Centres, who promise a programme of community events stretching across Tāmaki Makaurau, and the Ending HIV Pride Hauora Series, with their series of events focused on queer health and wellbeing.

And finally, we’re excited to see what our communities can achieve through our new partnership with Spark NZ, The Pride & Spark Empowerment Initiative. We hope that with this new support, we’ll be able to better empower our diverse rainbow communities to express our true selves and create some magic for Pride.

This growth and empowerment of our communities is one of the most exciting aspects of OurPride. The activation of the Auckland region by our queer communities putting on activities, from pot lucks to theatre shows, is what lies at the heart of Pride. It is the reason Pride exists.

Every year this festival demonstrates to Tāmaki Makaurau and Aotearoa how much our communities have to offer. We are truly grateful to all of you who play a part in making the Auckland Pride Festival a success. Prepare for a fabulous adventure across the colours of the rainbow, as we launch the 2020 Auckland Pride Festival, OurPride, with a celebration of the queer excellence of Tāmaki Makaurau.

Hosted by the inimitable HugoGrrrl (winner, TVNZ’s House of Drag), with direction from award-winning theatre artist Freya Finch, the Auckland Pride Gala returns bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before.

Launching OurPride with a onenight only queer extravaganza in the heart of the Aotea Arts Quarter, OurGala includes sickening performances from the legendary COVEN and more artists to be announced.

More than just a taste of what’s to come in the programme, OurGala is a Vaudevillian extravaganza of music, drag, cabaret, burlesque, comedy, cirque, and much more.

Artists from OurPride’s programme appear alongside special guests and celebrated community members for an unforgettable night at the theatre.

ARCH As we celebrate Auckland’s first Pride Festival of a new decade, we invite our community to gather around the Statue of Queen Victoria, as we reclaim the streets of Tāmaki Makaurau for OurMarch.

In 1972, New Zealand’s Gay Liberation Front, led by Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, rallied around the Statue of Queen Victoria in Albert Park for one of the earliest public demonstrations of Aotearoa’s Gay Liberation Movement, paving the way for many of the freedoms we enjoy today.

OurMarch champions the kaupapa of OurPride, through liberating and celebrating with Auckland’s rainbow communities.

OurMarch is a demonstration of energy, unity, and the rich diversity of our community.

Gathering in Albert Park at 4.00pm, OurMarch follows Bowen and Victoria Streets, before dancing up Queen Street and concluding in Aotea Square for OurParty.

All those who respect the kaupapa of the event and Auckland Pride Festival are welcome to participate in this openaccess event, with no cost to participate.

Writer/Performer Liam Coleman is an exciting new voice in the New Zealand film and web series scene.

GAY OUT To celebrate 21 years of the Big Gay Out festival, we’re gearing up for the biggest, GAYEST, birthday party ever!

The Ending HIV Big Gay Out is New Zealand’s largest and most fabulous family-friendly Rainbow Community event and part of the Auckland Pride Festival. Tāmaki Pātaka Kōrero’s ‘Playdate for Queer Families’ is an event especially for the rainbow families of Tāmaki Mākaurau, in celebration of the Auckland Pride Festival 2020.

Proud Centres returns to Auckland Council’s Arts and community centres for 2020, helping to spread Pride across Tāmaki Makaurau!

Proud Centres is a series of free local events that focus on education, acceptance and celebration of our rainbow communities in their local centres, across Tāmaki Makaurau.

Showcasing a diverse range of LGBTQI+ writers writers who push boundaries, explore new territories and create queer and fantastical worlds. Seeing yourself reflected in literature can help you find your place in the world. Creating queer-themed books for children and young people is important: they can provide vital support and direction for genderquestioning kids, and fortunately more of them are now being published in NZ. Caitlin Spice is the co-author of Raven Wild, a transgender fairytale in the ‘Promised Land’ series. Kyle Mewburn is one of New Zealand’s finest, and most eclectic, picture book writers with over 20 titles to her name.

Completing our panel are international guests Kelly Gardiner (The Firewatcher Chronicles) and Michael Earp (Kindred: 12 Queer #LoveOzYA Stories) Chaired by librarian and children’s book expert Simie Simpson.

Exciting things are happening right now in LGBTQI theatre. Celebrated playwright Victor Rodger leads a conversation with young writers who are creating high-octane, high-calibre plays that explore themes of belonging, power, race and sexuality. Joni Nelson’s disobedient black comedy 8 Reasonable Demands was showcased in Auckland Theatre Company’s HERE & NOW festival and challenges us to think about power and activism within queer communities. Joshua Iosefo is the founder of ‘Odd Family’, a collective who create and perform stories to encourage Pasifika families to talk openly about mental health. Nathan Joe (pictured) well-known in the theatre world and has won multiple awards including the Playmarket b425 award two years in a row.

Courageous, boisterous and confrontational, Victor Rodger has changed the landscape of theatre in Aotearoa over his long career. He has paved the way to explore and examine those challenging conversations about who we are. Over his career Victor Rodger has worked in the press, performed on stage and screen, and written several awardwinning plays. His work often deals with issues of sexuality, race and identity, and has been praised for its boldness, candour and freshness.

Victor has also written extensively for television, as well as children’s stories for Radio New Zealand.

‘Learning and Living’: A conversation with Charmaine Pountney

Charmaine Pountney is a writer, educator, lesbian and learner. Since the 1970s, she has spoken and written extensively on social justice issues. A secondary school teacher by training, Charmaine has worked in many areas of the education system, with students, teachers and parents. In addition to speaking engagements, radio and television activities, she has written a book, rescued a dying school and, from 1997-99, produced a weekly column for the NZ Herald. This remarkable woman discusses her life and her journey in learning with Julie Watson.

Whether you’re doing it, wanting to do it, or not doing it, sex is everywhere. So how do we talk about it? Join us as we chat to experts on writing about sex within (and out of) rainbow communities.

Rainbow communities often break down rules and taboos when it comes to sex, but what taboos and rules do we still perpetuate within our own communities? Speakers include Samuel Te Kani, (Vice’s Sex with Sam), Melody Thomas (award-winning RNZ’s podcast BANG!), celebrated academic and true sexpert Mark Henrickson, FAFSWAG’s Moe Laga and celebrated author Joanne Drayton (winner of the 2019 Ockham New Zealand Book Award for non-fiction).

Chaired by the Rooster himself, Sam Orchard.

HAUOR The Ending HIV Pride Hauora Series is a new joint initiative by Auckland Pride and Ending HIV aimed at increasing the health and well-being of our rainbow communities.

The Hauora series is a new category of events in the Auckland Pride Festival, allowing anyone to create an event in the series to improve the well-being of our diverse communities.

From workshops, forums, yoga or meditation and retreats, to sport or recreation, we’d love to have your event as part of the Hauora Series.

Only have an initial idea so far? We’d still love to hear from you.

If an event is registered as part of the Auckland Pride Festival that aligns with the kaupapa of enhancing health and wellness within the community, you may apply for funding from Ending HIV as part of the Hauora Series.

PRIDE & SPARK EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVE The Pride & Spark Empowerment Initiative is a new and unprecedented project that will help connect and resource Auckland’s diverse rainbow communities by supporting and resourcing those producing events for the upcoming festival.

To be eligible, your event needs to be a part of the Auckland Pride Festival and needs to benefit rainbow communities in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Auckland Pride will be prioritising events organised by individuals and organisations who haven’t had significant involvement in previous Pride Festivals. This is to ensure that the Empowerment Initiative is supporting new and emerging event producers/artists. Regardless, everyone is encouraged to apply.

There are three amounts of funding available: $500, $1000, and $2,000. Applications close on 20 December, to apply go to aucklandpride.org.nz/empowerment-initiative
